A View from the Top
By John Amato Wednesday Feb 20, 2008 8:31amIt figures that Vicki Iseman, the lobbyist at the center of this John McCain brouhaha, is from Pennsylvania. According to her college alumni magazine in this piece headlined "A View from the Top," she's a 1990 grad of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a native of that western Pa. town. This accompanying picture proves she has friends in high (or low) place.
(Nicole:) As much as the media will try to make this a short-lived sex story, Digby moves past that and starts connecting the dots:
Back in the 2000 campaign when St John the Flyboy was every journalist's favorite pol, a story emerged about him major sending letters on behalf of a contributor, Paxson Communications, to the FCC. [..]
Well, apparently there was more to the story. It turns out that McCain had a very cozy relationship with Paxson's lobbyist, to the extent that some of his staff were worried that he was having an affair with her. (They both deny it, and I could not care less if it's true.) But whatever it was, they were very close and McCain was apparently doing official favors for her.

Caption: A blond bombshell (sort of...) and a bombed out shell (of a President).
McCain has shown a willingness to cheat whatever mate he's with to advance his political ambitions (his first wife, etc).
I'm listening to some repug talking head blaming the "Liberals" for this smear .Who says it was a lib. Huckabee stands to gain the most from this.
A right wing evangelical preacher wouldn't do something like this.....................................would he?
A:your god damned right he would.
Romney has a lot to gain. He only suspended his campaign which I believe is an unusual move. Perhaps the plan was to sit back and wait till this scandal got traction then have Sir Mittens ride to the rescue.
Is there any indication yet which way his wiener bends? These are the questions we should be asking.
But he's seventy.....oouuu. Why don't these women go after the better looking and younger democrats? It can't be because they actually like having sex with there wives.
PLOT LINE FROM A CONSPIRACY THEORIST:
Karl Rove calls John McCain. "How's the campaign going, Senator?"
"Not too well, Karl. We've won the nomination, but we're way behind the Democrats in the polls. They also had much bigger turnouts for the primaries. Any ideas, Karl?"
"Yeah, one. Suppose we plant a false story that you were romantically involved with an attractive blonde lobbyist a few years ago. Remember that Iseman woman?"
"I never had an affair with Vicki Iseman, Karl."
"I know, Senator. That's the whole point. But she was a lobbyist, and you did know her. So we hire a few of your former aides to tell the New York Times they had told Iseman to stay away from you, as confidential sources, of course. Since Iseman is a good-looking gal, the story will be explosive."
"How will that help my campaign, Karl?"
"Well, Senator...we then get the aides to admit they were lying to the Times. And you come out smelling like a rose, because you've been defamed by a liberal paper, unjustly. That will energize our conservative base, which has always hated the Times."
"You're brilliant, Karl. Go for it."
This is tooooo funny.
the New York Times first endorses McCain for the GOP.
Then they come out with this story.
I wonder when they had this story, I would suspect before they endorses him.
This story is garbage, just like the loon who claims to have gay sex and use drugs with Obama.
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=56626
Again...both stories are garbage..
Robert Lockwood Mills @ 7:
Sad thing is it would probably work.
Hannity and his ilk are attacking the NYT. I don't know what to think. I don't give a damn if he had an affair or not, but if he used his powers to do favors for her, that's a whole different story.
mudshark @ 3:
Nothing says "liberal" in their eyes like the NYTimes. The repukes will ignore the fact that Drudge broke the story months ago.
The real story is not about sex. The real story is the corruption of the political process. I could care less if Miss Vicki and Miss Cindy made a sandwich with John McCain in the middle. I do care, however, when lobbyists game the system to serve the interests of their corporate clients at the expense of the American public.
Could someone help me out please. I'm having trouble remembering the word used to describe trading sexual favors for goods or services. It's right on the tip of my tongue......
Dave @ 8:
worldNUTdaily.com... feh! i've got to go take another shower!
Spud @ 5:
And someone please go through her closet looking for stained dresses.
According to the Washington Post today...
That sounds suspicious to me. How do you go from secretary to partner?
I agree with Gotugye. Who cares about the sex, I'm more concerned with elected officials literally being "in bed" with the special interest... ESPECIALLY the telecommunications special interest. Is the ridiculous state of our national media any wonder when this kind of collusion exists?
I listened to some conservative radio this weekend just for kicks... My conclusion is that conservative radio/television is more popular with broadcasters because listeners/viewers will tolerate far more advertisements than their liberal counterparts. Perhaps it was just the few stations I listened too, but there was more advertising going on than radio program.
Check out this article on Media Reform.
Joementum @ 11:
Joementum @ 11:
I agree with you, Joementum. The whole crew on Morning Joe practically had a thrombo over the NYT this morning and defending McCain. The TNR angle is being played, but there's no mention of Drudge anywhere and that needs to be brought to the surface ASAP.
Wonder if georgie bush had an affair with her - oh, wait a minute, his tastes go towards gannon/guckert types don't they?
Much to do about nothing
[Deleted. Off topic-Sitemonitor]
Worldnetdaily has about as much a standing as the crooks and liars board.
Except that some of their reports make it on to drudge and force people to talk about it
Very soon you will all have to comment on Obama's 'mentor' (his words) Frank Davis.
That will be where the attacks come from, not some fake Obama's gay video.
Attacks on McCain are easy, you can attack his record without getting nasty. Obama doesn't have a record so when they come they'll be about people like Frank Davis
Doggiebobo @ 20:
I agree. But it's so much fun to watch the hypocritical pigs heads spin.
She's an Abramoff with boobs!
Oh wait:
A sex scandal...with a lobbyist...
I guess he is a Conservative afterall.
Sorry Rush, Ann, and Laura
Yellow Elephant Safari @ 23:
Ain't it the truth. Looking forward to see what is up Hillary's sleeve tonight.
That certainly is the implication, but where's the specific allegation, much less the actual evidence?
If the NYT article indicates all they have, they shouldn't have printed it. If they have more then they should have printed that too.
Logan Murphy @ 18:
Pat Buchanan was the best. He thinks that the NY Times needs to be investigated to find out the motivation for running the story because it was lacking in sources, but then almost immediately said it was an important story because the Washington Post ran it, too. These people are insane. They are trying to further the "liberal NY Times" accusations, while also ensuring the McCain story sticks.
holy ho sales batman!
Ex-Canuck @ 19:
No. Dubyah prefers reptilian brown sugar.
While all this is going on, Obama won the most votes from Americans living out of the country.
I cannot believe the Times ran this story unless they have something more to back it up. I don't think this is the end of it. I also believe that Huckabee knew this story was coming. More than once, when asked why he stayed in the race, he gave that gomer pyle smile of his and said, something could happen.
She is fugly. Sorry.
Ed @ 28:
I just caught the beginning of Pat's segment and it doesn't surprise me one bit that he'd say that. There are still many questions left to be answered. I am perplexed, like many, as to why they would run this after endorsing McCain. Everything I'm hearing on radio and teevee right now from Republicans is that they will now rally around him because it's the NYT, and for that reason alone. This is why the Drudge angle needs to be out there!
Vicki Iseman flavor of the week.
It is kind of interesting that the Times held this story (which has been rumoured since December) until the day after it became clear to even the most ardent supporter that Hillary's chances of winning though elected delegates was about zero. There was a discussion on MSNBC of this very issue, and suddenly they cut away to this "breaking news" about an eight-year-old possible affair. They will talk about anything other than Hillary's pledged delegates at this point...
If indeed turns out that this is true, then we can unequivocally state that "the truth has a liberal bias".
As much as the media will try to make this a short-lived sex story...
What are you talking about? This is all over the news. J-Lo gave birth and for once, the media ignored a celebrity!
Maybe we can pay some greasy hag friend of hers to secretly record her admitting she made a mistake by sleeping with McCain.
It ain't the act, folks. It's the hypocrisy. If it's true.
That's all I got to say 'bout that.
nacho_candidate @ 16:
On her back
Where's that skank that got the goods on Monica Lewinsky? Your country needs you, Ma'am!
That this story is afoot tells everyone the Evil Power Structure doesn't want McCain.
New prediction: It's gonna be President Hillary.
Tucker, wrong again.
The View could be a gay old time today.
kablooie @ 40:
Linda Tripp?
Huffington post has pictures of the similarities between McCain's wife and McCain's lobbyist friend being twins separated at birth... Maybe this is just a case of an old man forgetting who his wife is? :)
Hey, Mudshark, remember Jim Bakker? Who brought him down?
Mullah Dobson and crew bribed Jessica Hahn to set Bakker up and after she did so, Robertson, Dobson and crew refused to pay up.
I always said she should have gotten her money up front cause that's how hoes operate.
Same thing with McCain. The Huckster stands to gain if McCain goes down - and the "liberal" MSM is too busy wondering which way Clinton or Obama will fart today to be bothered with exposing McCain as a playa - hell, they sat on this story, so what does that tell you?
How does the lobbying McCain did to the NYT to can the story jive with it being false.
If it is crap you just say it is not true and go ahead and run it cause you will look like a jackass.
George (~Bush) @ 35:
Oh come on!
As long as McCain is running for President people will question the timing of any story like this.
Whitey @ 9:
It did work. Remember the story about Dumbya's shirking or the very modest Air Nat'l Guard duty? All of the hubbub became about the origination of a documnet, and it totally drowned out the fact that nobody had any recollection of bush actually showing up for duty.
According to the Washington Post today…
Iseman, 40, who joined the Arlington-based firm of Alcalde & Fay as a secretary and rose to partner within a few years…
That sounds suspicious to me. How do you go from secretary to partner?
The same way Barbara Stanwyck's character did in an old movie called "BabyFace".
[deleted--OTT]
pissed off patricia @ 10:
Most Independents DO CARE about personal hypocrisy. After all, Bill Clinton was impeached for just the same thing. With him, it didn't involve compromising your political office; in this case it has. See evidence of McTorture giving preferential treatment to the companies Miss Vicki was lobbying for. So, this man has broken two barriers: personal and professional, in one fell swoop.
What we definitely DO NOT NEED in this country is another fraud in the White House! The fact that McCain's lawyers attempted to strongarm the NYT (and did for a year) into not running this story proves that McTorture had much to lose in it's airing. If not, why lawyer up and try to blackmail theNYT.
The Times article stands on it's own merit. It's verifiable and the witnesses are talking. What more does one with an average intellect need?
The fact is that AMERICANS DO CARE about whom we elect into office and the Repukes reputations reflect anything BUT family values at this point. Their platform is shot to crap with all of the GOP criminals who have been convicted of corruption and fraud.
McFraud has seen his final swan song as a candidate. Since Romney put his campaign "on hold" maybe he'll come back into the race. It really matters very little that the GOP even has a candidate at this point. Maybe no candidate is better than a choice between McWhoremaster and Huckleberry Bible Hound?
LibertyLover @ 44:
Ewwww.....isn't this McCreepy?
LibertyLover @ 44:
HuffPo give me nausea.
Like the man said, who cares about this - I mean it's not as if McCain hasn't been chasing pusketts all his life. I won't forget the story of his birddogging the knockout blond wife of a guy here in Atlanta that was, in fact, hosting McCain at some sort of retired Navy pilots function. As the evening wore on the slightly inebriated McCain's attention to the lady became an embarrassment to everyone, except the narcissistic bastard himself...and at some point the host/husband was about to kick the SOB's ass to the curb when they decided to move him on out before his short arms came up short in a full-fledged fight. This'll blow over...but like 'Bubba', there's more where that came from, and it will again and again.
In the end, Obama will blow the doors off the jerk who's final campaign will go down as a 'Grumpy Old Man that couldn't keep his hands to himself and, at the same time, allowed his ambition to compromise whatever good he once stood for'.
Aren't there libel laws? If the story ain't true. McCain should sue!! He wont do that because the whole story would have to be told.
My first wife said the way to get ahead
"It's not who you know but who you blow" or something.
The NYTimes blew it on this one. To report a sex scandal, you have to have hard evidence, not just rumors. If McCain did nothing wrong here, which seems entirely possible, I feel bad for the guy, and anyone not so brainwashed by crooksandliars ideology should too.
I don't care if it's true either, sex or no sex, but the thing that struck me when I first saw the picture of her is how much she looks like McCains wife. I know men and women have "types" that they are attracted to (I do) and it seemed strange that she looks so much like McCain's wife. The real issue to raise is how close he was to her because she is a lobbyist. The man above reproach is, of course, not so clean as his well massaged image would have you believe.

Robert Lockwood Mills @ 7:
You know, I got out of bed this morning with the same thought. Now he’s going to look like a victim and virile and, after a scathing self defense, he’s going to look tougher than nails.
My second thought was, my oh my, how jaded and cynical you've become. I used to be one of those elusive moderates. I blame Karl Rove, W, Dick…the whole lot of them.
Kevin C. @ 56:
I don't know if it is true or not and neither do you. Ideology has nothing to do with it. I don't care if he slept with her or not. I do care about how close he was to a lobbyist who had business with him. The difference between conservatives and non-conservatives is I get pissed of when someone I supported does something stupid, like Bill Clinton did. Conservatives always defend their own. I have know idea if you are conservative or not it is just an observation.
Hey baby wanna boogie? Boogie Woogie Woogie with me!
Sure seems like a song whose time has come 'round again.
Amazing to watch the republicans come to mccain's defense. If this had been a democrat, they would have had a field day. because of his vietnam experience, most people have shown him understandable sympathy over the years.
but go back to the "keating five", and mccain's involvement in the sleaze of that banking scandal in arizona that cost the taxpayers and investors substantially losses. he has a history of influence peddling and hypocrisy.
the fact here are irrefutable - mccain did take action to support this lobbyist's clients. add the fact this is an attractive young woman, who started her career as a secretary, makes mccain's actions less than professional for someone who wants to be president. the closer you look at mccain, the more undesirable he is.
I would rather see romney or huckabee get the nomination, if that is still possible.
Absolutely awesome find.
This story is NOT going away!
Hey, has anyone thought that just maybe this is the "story" that Flynt was holding
back? Remember, he said back in May of last year that he had the goods on some
U.S. Senator and would, at the appropriate time, release such. Maybe he is the snitch.
Kevin C. @ 56:
"[H]ard evidence"? "[B]rainwashed by crooksandliars ideology"???
Stop it. You're killing me.
Repuglicans are so funny.
Doggiebobo @ 66:
I forgot about that. You may be on to something.
Elisabeth, WANKING of the mouth.
Sad for Cindy on the View. What about McCain's wife before Cindy?
You know I was always wondering why Huckabee was hanging in the race, and now it occurs to me that god must have been telling him something.
Man, Romney must be banging his head against a wall somewhere today.
The drama involves a woman lobbyist who may have helped to write key telecom legislation. The woman in question has retained counsel and strongly denies receiving any special treatment from McCain.
McCain hurt his constituents by putting his romantic interests ahead of their legislation interests.
cynick @ 70:
Doubt if that's the case, for as we all know, God only talks to bush-lite.
Logan Murphy @ 33:
I just caught the beginning of Pat's segment and it doesn't surprise me one bit that he'd say that. There are still many questions left to be answered. I am perplexed, like many, as to why they would run this after endorsing McCain. This is why the Drudge angle needs to be out there!
This may indeed be a face-saving way for the wingnut talking heads to reverse themselves regarding McCain. It doesn't much matter. Their inability to influence the GOP rank and file has been exposed.
As for the Times' motives ... Have to keep in mind that its News and Editorial departments are separate entities. It may seem hard to believe, but the ed board doesn't tell the newsroom what to cover and the news editor doesn't dictate opinion. The publisher is the only one with power over both realms, and a smart publisher won't be too heavy-handed with either. (Look at he WSJ, for example: Great investigative reporting; batshit insane rightwing editorials.)
Also, McCain is their pick among Republican candidates -- not among all candidates (on the Dem side it was Hillary.) Even if they knew about this potential scandal, what could they do? Endorse Huckabilly? Mittens? Nah.
Joementum @ 73:
Newspapers keep their news and editorial divisions separate. If everything was working properly, the editorial people never knew about this until last night.
Swashbuckler @ 74:
Thanks. That was sorta my point in response to #33 -- but the quoting got messed up.
As the headline at Fark.com reads:
Republicans seen thanking lucky stars it involves an adult woman
Right. It's a "liberal hit job" ... by Matt Drudge. And the Washington Post.
The McCain campaign must be in lock-down panic mode if that's the best they can do. McCain is flailing around like John Kerry. Completely clueless.
.
nacho_candidate @ 16:
The cynic in me says: "On your back"?
Quid Pro Quid
pissed off patricia @ 10:
Two things, first, ain't it funny that the same right wing talkers that hated McCain not long ago are now defending him?
Second, bingo. Who cares if he had an affair. But, if he exercised influence improperly, that's a big deal. What did those FCC letters say?
Actually, three things.
Third, so far the story is pretty much smoke and mirrors. Lots of inuendo and anonymous sources. It strikes me as odd that the Times would publish something this thin. Perhaps there is more to come.
Since when is having sex with a woman something that should be reported in the media. I should be famous.
c127 @ 54:
McCain, being a publicly elected official, would have to prove not only that the story was false, but that the Times new it was false and published it anyway. The standard is known as "actual malice" as opposed to mere negligence.
Ron @ 81:
And there I was wondering why I wasn't famous! Silly me, I thought you got into the papers for getting screwed by a woman!
Ron @ 81:
When you're a Republican and she's not a hooker.
Ron @ 81:
A reich-winger having a heterosexual affair with an adult is certainly newsworthy.
Adultery is a major sin to the fundies, he's in trouble.
george @ 86:
"Adultry"???? Show me the evidence.
"some of his staff were worried that he was having an affair with her. (They both deny it, and I could not care less if it’s true"
Before Lewisnky I would have agreed 100%. A non-issue that has nothing to do with the affairs (excuse the pun) on the nation. The Rethuglicans started this shit, they wrote the rules with the Clinton Inquistion so take the hypocritical bastards down with sex scandals I say! What's that little black book the wingnut religious zealots like to quote say? "Eye for an eye".
These insinuations McCain exchanged sway over the FCC for sex with a lobbyist are right up there with the attempted smear of Obama over alleged plagiarism.
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0208/8616.html
Ruthless People @ 88:
Eye for an eye? Does that mean that if I have sex with a woman, she should be having sex with me?
If McCain had been seen often in the presence of a male lobbyist, or a homely female lobbyist, there would be no story here. Senators constantly associate with lobbyists, and while it's sleazy, it's also S.O.P. in the Washington cesspool.
But add sex (or perceived sex) to the mix, and you've got a huge story. That's why I see the hand of Karl Rove in this. Create a phony link between a candidate whose far behind in the polls and a blonde sexpot, force him to defend himself, get the media in an uproar, and then...have the "confidential source" admit he was lying. Reason? He was desperate to keep a warmonger like McCain out of the White House. Result? McCain gains sympathy for being wronged, the conservative base rallies behind him, and he's back in the race.
Doggiebobo @ 87:
Evidence? We don't need no stinkin' evidence.
The repigs are the ones who wrote the playbook during the Clinton admin and perfected it with the swift boating of Kerry. And it continues today with all the lies they keep pumping out about Obama being a secret Muslim and his "possible communist ties".
Repeat the lie often enough and the truth doesn't matter anymore.
Whitey @ 39:
Or perhaps night school.
Yellow Elephant Safari @ 13:
The word is, "republicanism".
I agree the lobbying / influence piece is more important, but the public loves a good sex scandal, and she does look a lot like Cindy McCain. Whichever one works to show that he is a tired, old DC insider, not a 'maverick.'
peaceful easy feeling @ 93:
Or perhaps on her back in night school.
this is being confirmed by ... PEOPLE INSIDE HIS CAMPAIGN.
people planted there by the New York Times...?
Dr. Matt @ 96:
enough already
Max H @ 98:
Is that a direct quote from her?
Sigh @ 83:
Foley was in the paper for soliciting underage page boys, Haggard was in the paper for smoking meth and having sex with a male prostitute, Craig for soliciting sex with undercover male cop in a public restroom. This is heterosexual consensual legal involving a Republican, this is news worthy!
The New York Times enabled Bush to take the White House in 2000. Why wouldn't they help McCain take the White House in 2008?
Others have said this before, but it's pretty clear: this is whipping the right into a frenzy of liberal-hating. The story is empty of indictment, and is only essentially a kind of gossip. It is as though the article was designed to infuriate right-wingers.
Again, given that this is the home of David Brooks and Judy Miller, why *wouldn't* we assume that their motivations are unsavory?
Max H @ 97:
Come on, dude. You know how the fundamentalist mind works. Take your pick:
1. The people inside his campaign who said this were lying, because they are secretly liberals.
2. Nobody said this inside the campaign; the Times is lying because they're a bunch of liberals.
Remember, anything can be blamed on liberals. Fortunately, as soon as the New Inquisition is begun, all us liberals and progressives will be rounded up and sent to "re-education camps", where everything will be explained to us, and we won't be liberals anymore! Whee!!!
die hard republicans voters have a gift of shrugg off anything like tefflon, there will be plenty of McCain supporters who will stand by him no matter what.
but them so-called super social conservatives and religious wing-nuts in the other hand........
Fil @ 103:
All ya gotta do is apologize and accept Jesus and you'll be welcomed right back.
Fil @ 103:
The Anti-McLame Hannity was sticking up for St. McCain last night and more and more are lining up today. Hannity even managed to bring up a Clinton reference to defend McHorny.
Sigh @ 104:
Well... If its man-on-man you've got to go through reprogramming.
can someone please put that image onto the Vicki Iseman Wikipedia page?
Clavis @ 102:
are you trying to say that Iraq is a buggered up and our debt through the ceiling because Bush is actually... secretly ... a Liberal ?
This reminds me of the time the Republicans accused Senator Kerry of having an affair with an intern that was in Africa. Of course that story wasn't true (since it was probably some Drudge Report fiction). However in this case we are talking about a conservative lobbyist and everyone knows conservative lobbyists are whores who screw people for a profession.
watched McCains press conference.
man...
he sounds scared absolutely shitless.
seriously.
i see a lot of people saying this will blow over, but it doesnt show on his face.
a whore is a whore.....and that's just bush
Looks like a skanky pooch to me... Can't say I recognize the girl on the right though....JD
Who's the idiot by the slut?
It figures that Vicki Iseman, the lobbyist at the center of this John McCain brouhaha, is from Pennsylvania.
really? how does 'it figure'? cause i dont remember PA being a republican stronghold recently
Wikipedia says McCain is a known adulterer.
"During their time in Jacksonville, the McCains' marriage began to falter.[84] McCain had extramarital affairs,[84] and he would later say, "My marriage's collapse was attributable to my own selfishness and immaturity more than it was to Vietnam, and I cannot escape blame by pointing a finger at the war. The blame was entirely mine."[84] His wife Carol would later echo those sentiments, saying "I attribute [the breakup of our marriage] more to John turning 40 and wanting to be 25 again than I do to anything else."[84]"
Wow! Place this photo in the 50s and she'd be a Marilyn look-a-like.
You know you're in trouble when George Bush has a better haircut than you do.
fuggem..........let them have a taste of their own medicine.
"Well, apparently there was more to the story. It turns out that McCain had a very cozy relationship with Paxson’s lobbyist, to the extent that some of his staff were worried that he was having an affair with her. (They both deny it, and I could not care less if it’s true.) But whatever it was, they were very close and McCain was apparently doing official favors for her."
Look at the language: "apparently," "worried that he was ," "they were ver close." and "apparently" again. Do you have a story or not? The funny thing is, I want McCain done with, I want a Democratic president (okay, a lie, but out of what's left I want a Democratic president)...but you are constantly relying on conjecture and heresay. Give us news, not only blogs offering apparently's.
Indiana University, founded 1820 as a land grant school, is in Bloomington, Indiana. Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, PA was founded in 1875. Stepping into the 'Way Back Machine,' the other place was called University of Indiana, PA when I worked my way through the Original. You can blame us Hoosiers for the a-hole, Bobby Knight, but Miss Vicki is all the copy cat college's own.

By that photo of Arbusto with the lobbyist, are you trying to suggest he was porking her too?
"It figures she's from Pennsylvania". What does that mean? Are there boatloads of evil lobbyists from Pennsylvania? I don't understand.
A View From the Top,
Is boosh looking down her cleavage?
Well...... At least McCain like something other than little boys or gay escorts eh Bush?
