The Colbert Report: The Audacity of Hopelessness

Download | play (h/t Heather)
Stephen Colbert looks at our economic situation and the reasons why politicians are so hesitant to be upfront about whether we're in a recession.
Nation, it’s tempting to say that our economy is in the crapper. But I think that’s unfair. It is past the crapper, down the tubes, out the illegal runoff pipe into the ocean where lobsters are feeding on it.

First!!
I'm putting that Stephen Colbert for President bumpersticker back on my car.
why would any rational American citizen or visitor
believe one word out of the mouths of bush or cheney.
they are fucking liars and only concerned with their own
interests. if congress does not impeach them, both
will bask in dubai. their family ties all lie in saudi arbia
and dubai.
as usual, excellent
Is there anything better on tv than when he does, The Word"? Nope, there's not.
Yes, I do heart Colbert.
I guess the lobsters are feeding right now on my 401K. I hope they enjoy it 'cause I got a feeling I'll never see some parts of it again.
Did the trolls kill this site today? Hard to even get. A lot of "errors" now. Stupid trolls.
The "unemployment rate" is in fact, bullshit.
I hope C&L can pinpoint the source of the "attack" on the Obama thread. It might be interesting to see the marching orders and the motivations behind it.
Blue Lensmadinejad @ 7:
I agree. WAY too obvious.
It is unfair to say that our government & business leaders have turned our economy into crap.
At least Crap is useful as fertilizer.
The economy has been turned into nothing or anti-thing.
We've dug the hole so deep that now it's China's crap that floats our economy.
Arthur C. Clarke has died.
CD @ 10:
Fuck! Got a link?
The economy was in the crapper for a while, it's just that they can't hide it anymore.
"I have encountered a few creationists and because they were usually nice, intelligent people, I have been unable to decide whether they were really mad, or only pretending to be mad. If I was a religious person, I would consider creationism nothing less than blasphemy. Do its adherents imagine that God is a cosmic hoaxer who has created that whole vast fossil record for the sole purpose of misleading mankind?"
Arthur Clarke, June 5, 1998, in the essay Presidents, Experts, and Asteroids

Clark was an agnostic/deist who loved the human race.

headline and everything.
He was the last of the great three science fiction authors.
Thanx. It's on BBC now too.
RIP Arthur C. Clark, we'll miss your brain. :(
Meanwhile, long live Colbert and his deftly aimed WORDS.
CD @ 10:
Damn wish I was going with him.
I'm getting disgusted with this Neanderthal Planet.
"The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible."

L.A. Confidential @ 18:
The fact that you find so much of it to be Neanderthal suggests that we need people like you more than most.

Don't blame the Neanderthals, they've been dead for eons. But yeah, with the passing of Clarke, it is easy to think "more geese than swans now live, more fools than wise" (to quote someone else entirely).
That Hopelessness guy must be guantanomoed, period. We can't have this Hopelessness guy terrorizing this country by promoting his brand of hopelessness. We must prosecute and guantanamo him so that he may no longer harm the public. And all those who dare speak or keep in contact with that Hopelessness guy must also be qurantined and guantanamoed. All say aye ?
gemHusseinpei @ 21:
All the great artists, ground breakers, and original thinkers are leaving earth. Whats left is a dumbed down population of American Idol wanna be's and illiterates who can't even find their own country on a map.
I'm not real excited about the prospect.
L.A. Confidential @ 23:
FTR you are aware Mr. Clarke wasn't an American right?
CD @ 20:
Thanks. I wish there was something I could do about it other then say people people wake up people hello people?
I'm seen as unhip and uncool.
I think all the other news broadcasts should shut down and just syndicate the Colbert report. Okay, maybe they could focus on local news.
L.A. Confidential @ 25:
Could be worse.
I'm seen as crazy.
The top issue in the 2000 election was the national debt and economy and correcting the 30 year old monster under our bed, George ran on it. Then it all became a backdrop issue after 9/11. Suddenly that campaign promise just didn’t matter and George ignored it for 8 years and did the exact opposite by helping drive nails faster into our fiscal coffin …
he spent money faster than speeding democrat, more one track stubborn minded than a locomotive, able to leap us into costly wars without raising taxes… Look up at the oblivious guy! It’s a fool, it’s got no brains, no wait it’s the Decider!
RIP Arthur C Clarke
And great piece by Colbert
Am I the only one pissed off at Pelosi for her comments about how we're not in a recession? She keeps this up, & the impeachment calls she refuses to put on the table are going to be for her. I'm moving her up from aiding & abetting to full on partners with the war criminals.
Am I going mad?
The only two segments of this site I could asocciate with were the Colbert & Stewart clips - or is America going mad, because an European who had been admiring the US of A all his life can not understand what´s going on in the "hearts and minds of the Americans"? I don´t know... I only know what I´ve been saying for more than a year - it´s a circus show turning the heads and minds off the Iraq war and this high crime & misdemeanant presidency just because there are elections comming (like three years ago?, or like seven years ago?)
There are always elections comming in the US - and everything that the republicans or the democrats do (or doesn't do) is measured by it's political correctness concidering the upcomming elections... That's why nothing changed after the democrats won the majority in both chambers about two years ago (or was it one?) - I tried to post a comment under the "Obama's speach" segment - comments were "closed down".
Well I say it once again (for the hundredth time) - America is not ready for a woman or black president - and as the show goes on - I think neither this woman or this black guy are ready for the presidency yet...
My real hopes were with Wesley Clark or Edwards - sorry if I see another recublican term coming onto the USA (and alas - the rest of the world)!!!
DAMN GORLOCK!
