An innocent man loses 5 years of his life at Guantanamo Bay
This is what George Bush and his band of cronies have turned America into. This is on all of our hands, whether we accept it or not.

CBS:
At the age of 19, Murat Kurnaz vanished into America's shadow prison system in the war on terror. He was from Germany, traveling in Pakistan, and was picked up three months after 9/11. But there seemed to be ample evidence that Kurnaz was an innocent man with no connection to terrorism. The FBI thought so, U.S. intelligence thought so, and German intelligence agreed. But once he was picked up, Kurnaz found himself in a prison system that required no evidence and answered to no one.
The story Kurnaz told 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley is a rare look inside that clandestine system of justice, where the government's own secret files reveal that an innocent man lost his liberty, his dignity, his identity, and ultimately five years of his life.
There's Dick Cheney's One Percent Doctrine in action for ya. Mother Jones has a profile of Murat Kurnaz as well as a timeline of his experiences.

yep! that's who we are!
It's not who I am but it is who the people who represent me are.
god i love living in a terrorist country.
thanks everyone!
do we blame you or your parents?
Hooray for America! We're number 1! (at completely abdicating any fealty to our espoused morals and national character). Guess what Righties, this is not a hate America statement. I just said we're abandoning the things that made America a place to be proud of!! Bring on the trolls to call me and America-hater and to tell me about how much more of this other countries have done (and how much worse it is than what America has done, so it's ok that we did it) in 3...2...1...
[Deleted-Sitemonitor]
Multiply this story by a few hundred and you have what is happening.
What is bad is something perhaps not seen within the US and that is how the US is viewed now by the rest of the world, a few years back peoples eyes would light up when I mentioned I was from the US, now the usually say they are sorry for what is happening to my country and give me a sad look. And this (Thailand ) is a friendly country to the US, down the peninsula aways they openly hate us. Down in Australia we are scorned, Europe is pretty much totally against us now with few exceptions.
Bush's Legacy ... a Failed State.
This is sickening.
This whole scenario was EXACTLY what the Constitution was written to prevent!!!
Bushco should all receive a fair trial in the real court system. Assuming they are found guilty, they should be tossed into the jails that they deem fit to hold 1% of all Americans (much higher % if you're black) to rot.
But didn't Bush look just FABULOUS at the baseball game last night?!
It is so unbelievable to me what these assholes have turned this country into. From "We have nothing to fear but fear itself" to "be afraid, be very afraid". These shitheads have screwed up this country worse than anybody in the history of mankind. We are so much different than we used to be. In a bad bad way.

Out of the many things Bush deserves a kick in the nads, the one I'm thinking about now is how much harder it's going to be with the ladies when I get to Japan. I have this feeling that, for them, the bloom is off the rose when it comes to American men.
I hope I'm wrong.
These are crimes against humanity and war crimes. Everybody who participated in this, civilian and military, needs to be brought to justice and punished. America is no longer a ciivilized nation. this makes me ashamed of my citizenship.
If the situation were reversed and Venezuela or Iran(or some other country with resources we covet) did this to an American citizen the bombers would already be in the air.
The war on terror is about revenge plain and simple. Torture is just a by product, there is no right or wrong
But at least 40% of Americans will vote Republicon in November again. This country is in serious need of electro-schock therapy, oh I guess after we are done with those people in Quantanamo, we can start on ourselves.
The right is counting on the ignorant 30% or so of middle and South of America to vote against their own interests again. Go ahead hillbillies, give America over to the top 1% again, they are laughing at you stupid retards!
Our Congress needs to address this issue. America should not be doing these kind of things to human beings. The rest of the world knows about America's crimes, and to set things right, we need to have hearings and make the administration accountable.
It seems that in our zeal to combat terrorism, WE have become the terrorizers.
The war on terrorism is bogus, these are PNAC agressions of choice, something that they've wanted for a long time since it existed pre-9/11.

Unfortunately, the relationship between one man’s experience and the underlying moral equivalency of his experience to the beliefs we as a Nation purport to abide by are lost on those who support this Administration. Pragmatism overrules conscience as long as bad things are happening to strangers, no matter their guilt. One only needs to read comment #1 for confirmation.
if Clinton were smart, she would start talking up the fact that she would pursue Bush and Cheney with vigor and urgency....once elected....
we don't hear obama or clinton touching this, and i suppose it's understandable why....
but clinton could put a wedge in here and force a discussion on a difficult topic, and see if obama has the courage to make such promises...
i am an obama guy, but i wish both candidates would talk about justice to bush and cheney, and killing bin laden....that should be 1,2 and 3...(in reverse order)
If they can imprison and torture Mr. Kumaz, they can do the same thing to us.
Just sayin'.

One of the keys to starting to make this unravel is to find the Doctor that participated in this.
He can have his MD yanked for this. Find him and start the process and we can get to the bottom of this.
What a sad story. The damage to the USA reputation is immense.

1950s. Dad, Why does everyone hate red china? Well son they have a goverment that does not believe in freedom like our country does. their goverment controls every part of their lives and they have no rights or freedoms. China can throw their people in jail for no reason, they spy on them, they use the army to search their homes or stop them from speaking out, They tell them what church to go to and if the people protest they are sent to prison or killed. The goverment controls all of the tv and radio stations so they never hear the truth and they have road blocks and fences to stop people from going to another country. Gee dad were so lucky to live here in america! Thats right son and don't ever forget it! WE ARE THE COUNTRY OUR PARENTS WARNED US ABOUT!!!

Yes good points Samson...but, I ask, not just you, but anyone...how do we stop them before they come for us...it's just a matter of time.
Let me qualify...by "us" I mean those that dissent against this administration, and it's criminal activity around the world.
i think that the first order of business for the next administration is to see to it that the law is enforced and to hold those who have broken the law accountable. that would show the rest of the world that we mean business when we say we want to restore our moral standing and credibility in the world.

The war on terror can get messy thats for sure......
CEO,citizens,eyes,open @ 49:
good observation
the "funny" thing about that is the reason why china did clamp down on its people versus why america has clamped down on its.
china's authoritarianism had its roots in being the chew toy for the imperialistic regimes of the late 19th early 20th centuries. after the brits forcing opium on them, and the japanese devastating so many chinese people the peasants said enuff z'nuff and the start of the communist rev.
and in the US... ? hmmm, we ARE the imperial power. our govt is not reacting to outside imperial powers trying to dominate us, it is based instead on the struggle between democracy and corporatocracy. guess who is winning.
chris @ 60:
Sure wars certainly solved everyones problems. 99% of all wars are fought with the purpose of ending war.
So much for that concept-idea.

The Bush Administration got this idea from Stalin. They used to call it a gulag.

but if she promised to make the prosecution of cheney and bush, and all their corrupt cronies from gonzalez to jackson, an urgent priority of her administration, and obama did not echo that promise, (and her commitment was authentic), I'd vote for her.
Even if the dems turn our country around, the notion that cheney bush, gonzalez, rove, jackson, all these guys, could just walk away without repurcussions, keeping the spoils of their corrupt tenure....that's rather disspiriting....

Funny -- I'd always had the impression our legal system was based on the idea that it's better for a guilty person to escape punishment for a crime s/he did commit than for an innocent person to be punished for a crime s/he did not commit. Can't imagine where I picked up such a silly notion...
Any bets as to how much the American government would be willing to consider paying Mr. Kurnaz in remuneration for wrongful imprisonment (and deity only knows what else)?
Yeah...riiiiiiiiiight. If there's any way that they can avoid it, the US government is never going to release Mr. Kurnaz because it would open far too many cans of worms and leave them far too vulnerable to accusations and lawsuits. At this point, Amnesty International is probably Mr. Kurnaz's only hope -- and even that is probably a faint hope at best.

I saw this last night. It absolutely blew my mind what they did to this man.
"Bush was elected twice by the country, like it or not you have to respect it. If BO is elected do you want people saying these things on conservative blogs, the diversity crowd would go nuts…."
No problem. Fine with me. There's a reason we have free speech in this country. I don't need my president to be put up on an untouchable pedestal in order to like him or her. If Barack Obama gets elected and fucks up, I'm going to admit it.
I'm not going to be a whiney conserbative baby who says all people do is blame everything on the president. When you elect morons to office, what you get is bad leadership. Duh.
I propose a "28% Doctrine", where we isolate the 28% of Americans who still support Bush and his thugs. We let them live in their own state and wall them in with their right-wing leaders. Now, the tricky part is in picking which state one would wall off. So as not to hurt the feelings of any one state, we could combine the Texas and Oklahoma pan-handle area and call it "D'oh!klahoma". Maybe even "Asshoma".
Rush to War @ 73:
I don't think the internet is the difference; one can be informed if one bothers to read and think for oneself, which means regarding the metric assload of idiocy off FOX and CNN with a critical eye.

The Bin Laden family made a mint off of this... and if you notice, Bush is not remotely interested in Capturing him. I wouldn't be surprised if he was out of the mid-east entirely and under Bushco's protection... or even dead.
The BBC even suggested he might have already been captured, however, that would serve the interests of warmongers. It would be better for them if the bogeyman were still out there (even if he really isn't).
I wouldn't put it past this current administration to 'allow' an attack on U.S. soil.

dood! where's my habeus corpus!
Jeremiah Wright ain't looking so bad now, eh?
I can tell you all that this is not only the US that is doing this.
In Germany a lot of the documents pertaining to what happened was lost.
The military 'accidentally' erased the data in for that time line (well most of the Iraq war).
Worst of all was the discussion if the German government should have even cared about him because he is not a German citizen.
I was totally disgusted.
Some guy is rotting away in Guantanamo after being kidnapped and tortured and we should not care?
I do not care who it is, no one deserves to be in Guantanamo. If the German government had a chance to get him out and did not, then they are complicit in what was done to him.
Absolutely disgusting.
The US and Germany never changed their fascist ways. They might have change the package but the apple is still rotten.
There is also a second guy that had the SAME thing happen to him: Al Masri.
makes you swell with pride, dont it. SAH USMC
This young man was stashed in Gitmo but we have secret prisons all over the world. How many more just like this guy are still rotting away or have been killed? This disgust me and I would love to hear both our candidates talk about justice for ALL those who had a hand in these atrocities. How do we ever regain any respect in the world if we do not address this?
Anyone who was outraged by Pastor Jeremiah Wright's histrionics in the pulpit, but who is not outraged by this administration, has some serious thinking to do, not that I expect them to do so.
Dictators Bush and Cheney would just smile at this innocent man's imprisonment and torture.
To paraphrase Phil Ochs, "There but for fortune go you and I..." Support free speech and the rule of law. Like right now, today, do something immediately.
Aloha
The longest serving Australia in Gitmo was David Hicks. He was patently innocent of the charges against him. Our decrepit government did nothing to save him - lies, lies and more lies were piled on top of poor David Hicks. He came home from Gitmo last year and was put into gaol here - great! More gaol for David. The story is harrowing. He was in solitary for 23 hours a day. The lights were left on at night - they played loud music continually.
I would have gone nuts way before David was let out. He must have the fortitude of an ox, although it's said that he's got emotional problems now he's out of gaol. Yeah.... duh.
What an embarrassment. I hope all those detained who were innocent (I suspect the vast majority) sue, and/or make enormous amounts of money from selling their stories. David Hick's family spent years and years trying to exonerate their son - what a horrendous lie! What a horrendous thing to happen to this very simply good family.
Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, they rounded up huge numbers of Taliban and people who were fighting with the Taliban because they got to eat something for the dubious pleasure, loaded into trucks and containers which were then strafed with bullets and left in the sun to die, no water, no food, no air. Thousands and thousands of people were killed this way, packed in like sardines, unable to sit down, killed this way with the sanction of the US forces who were shown to be standing nearby watching and, it's believed, supervising.
I guess it saved them building more prisons.... they're building enough in the US...

Yes, this is who WE are. This is who are soldiers are forgiven for behaving like, so this is who we are. This is why Ward Churchill used the descriptive phrase "little Eichmans" to describe all of the US cogs in the wheel that allow these war crimes to be perpetuated.
It is not 'the government', we ARE the government. The soldiers & US interrogators who beat him, the judge(s) who decided against his release, the prosecutors who trumped up the charges against him and the paper pushers who wrote it up, filed it away or edited it... they are us!!
THIS is who WE are!
So here's the comment right from where this s**t started...
Mr. Kurnaz was living in Germany, just like I am. His fault? He was a muslim. Just like the nearly 3 million others that live around here. Germany has a population of 82 million... So what happens in Germany when somebody is locked up in a prison that isn't a prison? Kept in something, that a guy called Adolf Hitler (no, he's not german, but austrian) simply by it's name: Concentration Camp. Or as we we say: KZ.
Let's take a look at this: A nation that is known in the US for "killing jews" and "being racists", all of the time. Yeah, that's what we do. Oh no, it was from 1933 to 1945, twelve long and ugly years out of our 2000 year old history. But what does the American public has to say about us? We are all just racists, jew-haters and of course, we are militant to the bones... Yeah, I heard that before. When I was on my last trip to the states (well, my last trip out of three, but the last of my whole lifetime, I'm 24).
You wanna know what happens in our "fascist country" when a guy that was born and raised here gets caught by our "friends and allies", well, by their Gestapo (that most of you know as the CIA)? Our Secretary of the Interior had to testify to a special investigation unit of our congress. Not just for the records, but fighting for his reputation, his job. He told us he didn't know about that. I, for myself, believe in what he said. You wanna know why I tell you all this stuff? To make sure you guys get the message: The country that killed about 50 million people in just one (1) century, that is so f***in grateful for bringing the democracy back to us, for your truly brave fathers and grandfathers who lost their lives to free Europe from those fascists, wants to tell you: WAR IS NOT THE ANSWER. WAR DOES NEVER SOLVE ANY PROBLEMS. IT JUST MAKES THEM WORSE. A German Secratery had to resign a few years ago, because she linked Bush's policy with the one of Adolf Hitler, probably the worst person that ever walked on our planet. So here's what I really wanted to tell y'all: Voting for McCain is voting for the "Hitler way of politics". First shoot, than ask questions. If "you" guys don't stop those Nazis, the Fourth Reich will be just a matter of time. You guys don't live in a democracy. Sorry, but that's like it is. But keep trying to act like democratic people and vote for Barack Obama. The Clintons are too close to the Bush Crime Family.
Best wishes from Germany and prayers for a democratic President in November.. Good night (1 a.m. around here)
Christopher (who knows his country ain't perfect, but I never wanna change my freedom against your "freedom")
And now sing along...
If you was lookin for that smokin gun, I would ask Dick Cheney wehre he get it from
I would ask Smith and Wesson how to make me one
You should smell your own hands for the smoking gun...
You sell that sh*t at Wal-Mart, ask the NRA where the smoking guns at...

It's not just America - and I hate to admit it - but Australia is also guilty of similar actions.
Under the leadership of George W's former "man of steel" John Howard, we allowed the detention of an Australian citizen, David Hicks, for 5 long years in Guantanamo Bay! He also wasn't charged with anything, was placed in solitary confinement and "tortured".
Our PM, Mr Howard looked the other way - only because he wanted to please Mr Bush! and the racist electorate who kept voting this mongrel back in office over and over and over again!
Fortunately we had an election in November 2007, and Mr Howard suddenly realised the continued detention of Mr Hicks had started to hurt him in the polls! With the help of Mr Bush they allowed Mr Hicks to return to Australia and serve his sentence in our jails! Still not sure what he was convicted of - but Mr Howard hoped this stunt would improve his popularity!
Well it didn't and the majority of Australians kicked his sorry arse out of office and overnight the air was much more cleaner and the sky turned blue!
Mr Bush and Howard are no better than the Chinese government, Burmese junta and any other dictator-run country who imprison innocent people, torture them and then deny they are doing anything wrong!!!
It is time the UN started kicking the backsides of these mongrels and charge them with human right crimes!
WE ARE (still and always) A NATION OF WAR CRIMINALS.
THere is a Newer, better way to govern ourselves.

19 went he went in, 24 when he got out, and 6 months after he is put in there his innocence is confirmed.
The only reason this happens is for others enjoyment.
We are a police state, its a matter of time until innocent Americans start disappearing too.
Oh yeah , let's all sing together , Amerrrrrrrica the beautiful ...
liberalHUSSEINmoderation @ 54:
You dont you say "come and get me motherfucker" and you deal with it as it plays out. Only when Americans are rounded up can we start to feel this madness ourselves, then maybe the majority will do the right thing.
odanny @ 140:
2 things. 1) Americans HAVE been rounded up. Jose Padilla and Brandon Mayfield are two that spring to mind.
2) When that starts happening, it's ALREADY too late.
and 3) It's already too late.
That's 3 things
bettestreep @ 135:
That was a lot of exclamation marks! And I agree with them entirely! Each deserves one. We were shocked and appalled and driven mute even though we protested against the war. We don't live in a democracy... neither do the Americans, nor the British. Funnny, such bastions
We were SO RELIEVED when Howard was voted out last year. We pray that sanity prevails in the US...
miss_kitty Hussein @ 141:
Yes, I know that Americans have been rounded up, but its a tad different when Jeff from Dayton or Sandi from Portland or Mick from New York are rounded up and held without due process. And that is where we go next. That is the first phase of "feeling it" as I alluded to.
The second phase is tasering, the third waterboarding.
Let the games begin.
We are being psychologically conditioned to ignore the atrocities done in our name to others so we will eventually accept it when it spreads wholesale across America.
When they come for your neighbor because he is a "terrorist", what will you do? They are betting, and I agree, that the answer is nothing.
to lib@91 One only need look at all evidence to conclude that this little group was and is responsible for this entire nightmare right from the beginning. Start at the year 2000 and look carefully at each incident and note who benefited. Right down the line their is a pattern pointing upward. People who live in darkness likely have their head up their ass. Try counting to ten before you slap the shit out of them.
there isn't any words..............................................................
there is no apology that could do justice to Murat Kumaz.
How fucking ashamed do we have to be before... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
FUCKING SHUT GUANTANAMO, DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Holy sh@$...how fuc@#ed up was that????
galmud @ 39:
Freedom of what exactly? Freedom to invade other countries, freedom to torture and destroy other peoples lives, or freedom to ALWAYS BE AN ASSHOLE, I think the real statement is we Americans hate the freedom of other nations to govern their OWN country!!!!
CEO,citizens,eyes,open @ 145:
Hehe, sometimes counting to ten actually works...but I'm becoming less patient with my friends...they're totally blind to reality...or just simply don't care...I think need new friends.
There are no words to describe how utterly disgusted and shamed I am to be American and this is only the tip of the iceberg of scandals that are going to come out. The only thing I can do is either move out or continue the fight but it seems to be a losing battle. If McCain is elected I'm out, it just isn't worth it anymore, the American people are too damn stupid to be saved...
