60 Minutes: Doug Feith once again earns his nickname

As John noted the other day, Douglas Feith is one of the most deceitful war architects, a difficult distinction to attain considering the company. On "60 Minutes" this Sunday, Feith was confronted by Steve Kroft with all the "miscalculations" he made as one of the primary enablers of the administration's disastrous march to war.

It's quite remarkable that Donald Rumsfeld of all people -- in a memo Feith calls "the Parade of Horribles" -- predicted exactly what the "downsides" to war would be. Even more remarkable is that it seems he took every step necessary to fulfill his own doomsday prophesies. Literally every single one of these has come to fruition.
Kroft summarizes some of them:
* the possibility that the U.S. could become so absorbed with its Iraq effort that it would pay inadequate attention to other serious problems;
* that war could cause more harm and entail greater costs than expected;
* that it would not go on for two to four years, but eight to 10 years;
* that terrorist networks could improve their recruiting and fundraising as a result of the U.S. being depicted as anti-Muslim;
* that Iraq could experience ethnic strife among Kurds, Sunnis and Shia;
* the war could damage America’s relationship with allies and its reputation in the world community.
Feith's response?:
"We certainly understood that these are the things that might happen. That's why we wrote them down.

QUESTION:
If America went to war to end the illegal wars of aggression against the same rational, "They might attack first," then why is Feith still free to walk the streets of America.
We didn't know the atrocities of WWII until it's end was drawing closed and then successfully prosecuted a GOVERNMENT that used such similar hubris to invade and occupy other European Nations. How is America behaving as the moral victor in the 21st Century in the Middle East when the American Government uses the same rational and tactics the Nazi party did?

Here is Dick Cheney in 1994 telling why they didn't go to Baghdad in '91.
He says it would have been a quagmire and quite clearly understood the implications, the same ones that have come to fruition today.
He also asks the rhetorical question:
'How many additional dead Americans was Saddam worth, our judgement was not very many and I think we got it right.'
My question is when did they develop amnesia.
My answer is when George Bush

I think what changed the equation was the concept of Peak Oil. When the oil industry ( Cheney for example) begin seeing the writing on the wall in the 90´s they realized the need to place the US Army physically on top of the oil. The costs all of a sudden seemed worth it. The situation on the ground and politically just got a whole lot worse than they thought beforehand. I do think they still believe it is worth it. Unfortunately I think the democrats also realize the need to control the mid eastern oil. Therefore I think they will have a hard time to disengage.

I think Wilkinson, Colin Powells Chief of Staff had the same regard for Feith as Franks. I cant find the quote but it was equally blistering. When you are an asshole and belong to a famous group of assholes, it sucks to be the one they all hate.
Amongst the questions Kroft asked of feith, one was missing, that being "are you really as dumb as your statements make you out to be, or is this some kind of Rovian trick?"
The media in this case did pretty good, but it seems this should have been taken to the next level.
When asked about the list of predicted disaster scenarios, and how they have virtually all come to pass- he answered
"Thats why we wrote them down."
No effort was made to deal or even plan to deal with these things- they wrote them down to COVER THEIR ASSES.

It's a little late now, but maybe if he had, a wise person could have weighed one alternative against another. From his remark it's apparent no one was smart enough either to ask or offer! Feith's grandparents were killed by Hitler in the Holocaust and his father, a Holocaust survivor was a memeber in a zionist youth group here after immigrating here from Poland following the Holocaust. How do these people ever get high level jobs in the first place? Then, they go hide out in prestigious universities, that give them some sort of legitimacy for crying out loud. Feith teaches at Georgetown and Yoo teaches at UC Berkley. These bozos don't deserve to set foot in my local community college. Since I don't believe anything these assholes in the Bush administration have to say, I really doubt that this memo was written before March 2003. Probably more like last week. In the criminal Bush administration, it's CYA time, 24/7, with all the Republican criminals trying to lay blame for all their crimes on anyone but themselves, and of course, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, their crime bosses. Republican and Mafia went so well together back during the Nixon years that today's Republicans decided to revive Republican Mafia for the new century, resorting to the same tricks as Tricky Dick, but on criminal steroids. Impeach them all. Jail them all.
He teaches at Georgetown? God that's unfair. I teach at a so-so university, and I suspect I have a much larger teaching load than he does. I predicted most everything that's happened in Iraq, and it's not even my field (I'm a Latin Americanist). What did I get wrong? Only that it turned out even worse than I expected. Do I get the cushy job at a comfy research university? Um, no. Do any of us who got it right get rewarded? Now there's a good question -- if you knew it was going to be a disaster, where should you have invested your money in say, Feb. of '03? Besides euros......
Feith is a university professor? Does he screen his students to make sure they are as stupid as he is? Otherwise, they might have a problem with his credibility.
What was that thing he was talking through? Was that his mouth or some other orifice?
