FOX News: Lincoln debated <i>Frederick</i> Douglass in 1858?!?

Turns out the Rhodes Scholars over at "Fox and Friends" think Abraham Lincoln debated Frederick Douglass in the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858. Of course it was Stephen Douglas. Something tells me Frederick would have had a tough time winning a Senate seat back then. Just a thought.

I'd mentioned this earlier on a previous thread - I'm glad you caught and posted it.
Simply unreal. It's one thing to use the wrong person but quite another to naturally assume that in 1858 a black man was debating Lincoln for the Presidency. The levels of stupidity and negligence on this one is beyond palpable.
For the record, I think Frederick Douglass was a hero. It's a side mission in my life to write a screenplay on this amazing persona of U.S. history. Aside from 3 seconds in "Glory" I've never seen the man portrayed in film. That's a shame.

Frederick Douglass by all accounts was a brilliant man.
Stephen Douglas was an able debater who won against Lincoln in the Senate election of 1858, but lost the Presidential election of 1860. The South in 1860 split the Democratic vote with their own Democratic candidate, thus handing the election to Lincoln.
Maybe Clinton will run as an independent?
When you are used to getting all of your talking points from the WH or the Pentagon, it is hard to look up real facts. Faux has no jounalists.

Frederick Douglass, as an escaped slave would not have been a citizen of 19th Century America. He was seen as a radical on par with Cindy Sheehan (closest modern analogy there is off the top of my head) at the time. Fred was a brilliant man indeed, his autobiography is a must-read for understanding what it was like to be a slave in the 19th Century.
Frederick Douglass was one of the most awesome men the United States has ever produced, but sadly enough he would not have been eligible to run for President (which he actually did in the 1880s,) until the 14th Amendment gave former slaves citizenships.
But that wasn't even a Presidential debate, it was a race for the national Senatorial seat in Illinois. Stephen Douglas is a man who was misguided to the point of bordering on evil in terms of the consequences. And, also, Stephen Douglas has one "s" in his name, Frederick Douglass has two.
And this guy is a Rhodes Scholar???? O.o
We are all much too hard on FuxNews. After all, it is an entertainment network, isn't it?

Obama will have the Democratic nomination, there will be no need to do anything else.
If Clinton wins all of the remaining contests by 60% (Arkansas has been the only state she has done that in), the 211 Florida delegates are seated by the actual vote (which is what Clinton wants) and the 156 Michigan delegates are divided 50/50 (the only possibility since Obama was not on the ballot), Obama still wins.
Clinton will not win the remaining contests by 60%.
It hubris that is driving Clinton forward, and Republicans who want the Democratic contest to continue. It is over. It is the Corporate Media that has manufactured the idea that it is still a contest.

It'll all come down to the Party's House of Lords -- the superdelegates.

A few splits and Obama is over 2025.
The super delegates do not want an invocation of their very own ghost of Gore in 2000 scenario.

"The people" kept picking candidates that lost, so the superdelegates kept gaining power, just in case the patricians had to veto the plebians for their own good.

I think Thomas Jefferson was about as close as we have gotten to an atheist in the White House, at least as far as we know. Lincoln, from what I understand was most definitely not a Christian, but was some sort of ambiguous Deist, like many of the Founders.

And I thought the Lincoln/Douglas debates were a series of statewide debates for the Illinois Senate seat between Stephen "the little giant" Douglas (incumbent Dem Senator) and A. Lincoln. The seat was up for election in 1858, though U.S.Senator's were actually chosen by the state legislature at that time.
I sure am glad Fox cleared that up for me.

Initially, it was just to contain it south of the Mason Dixon line as per William Clay's compromise until the Tawney Court basically threw out that configuration with the Dred Scott case.

The now defunct Weekly World News was a satire tabloid. If you looked inside the cover there was a disclaimer saying names were made up unless they were satirizing public figures, and advise the reader to suspend disbelief for the sake of enjoyment.

If it is deliberate, it may redound on them. Even just in a picture, Frederick Douglass is impressive. It was said that his magnificent presence impressed the crowds he spoke to before he even opened his mouth. Look at him; handsome, dignified, intelligent. No Willie Horton he. He bears the face of a man who really could have led a nation wisely and well.

Wasn't able to view the video clip last night, for some reason, but now that I see it in context, I can't help but believe this was a case of "When Interns Attack!" Memo to Fox and Freaks: Yeah, that intern sure was dumb, huh? Looking for video of the Lincoln-Douglas debates - yuk, yuk, yuk!! But you guys sure are smart, right? I mean, everybody gets Stephen Douglas confused with Frederick Douglass, right? Right??
That famous debate happened just before Napolean freed the slaves, an event that ended the 100 Years War against against the cows.
Is there a website that keeps track of all the mistakes that are made on "Fox and Friends"? It seems these losers make huge mistakes about once a week.
THIS JUST IN!!! Fox has responded by saying the idea that it is Frederick Douglas in that picture is "just a theory," and that "all the facts are not in." They went on to stress the importance of providing viewers of alternate theories on the Lincoln-Douglas debates, not just the one supported by leftwing extremists in the liberal (reality-based) media.
Give the FOX interns a break. They have to keep one eye peeled for O'Reilly and his randy falafel.
Just another Fox-up by the boys. My guess is that their fans will whine that the intellectuals are after them again! Just another reason NOT to elect a smart President!
