The left-wing Verso Books has just released "The Decline of Black Politics: From Malcolm X to Barack Obama," by civil rights activist Kevin Alexander Gray. The conservative Regnery Publishing just announced two books for August: David Freddoso's "The Case Against Barack Obama: The Unlikely Rise and Unexamined Agenda of the Media's Favorite Candidate," and Thomas Blood's "The Clinton Collapse: How Bill Clinton Lost Hillary Her 'Sure Thing' Nomination (And Might Even Make Obama Lose Too)."
"We intend to put him under the microscope, and we think readers will be very interested to learn what we uncover," says Marji Ross, president and publisher of Regnery, which in 2004 released "Unfit for Command," the best-selling attack against Democratic nominee Sen. John Kerry.
Yes, we knew it would happen, but the Swift Boaters are officially back. Well, at least their publisher is. If you remember what they did to Kerry, you can easily imagine the traitor or foreign agent Obama will be when the Swift Boaters are done. The Obama people and progressives everywhere had better be ready.

Am I surprised? No. In fact because the the Republicans have such low expectations of victory and are less than enthusiastic about their candidate I expect they will use this election cycle to explore the full depths of negative campaigning. Even if they lose the election and toss McCain under the bus in the process they will doubtless learn just how far they can go with this type of campaign. They really have nothing to lose at this point.
Interesting. Because according to noted left wing pundit Bob Novak, gooper RFs came up with nothing after deep searches. Of course truth is an annoyance to Nixonite criminals.

Like the Swift Boat ads, books like this would mean nothing if we didn't have the tabloid news media we're stuck with. They somehow feel it's their job to give a voice to every nutty right-wing conspiracy theory that gets thrown at the wall. Whatever is in these books will quickly be translated as "Some people are saying..."

The only reason that the swift boat attacks worked against Kerry is because he didn't put up any fight whatsoever where as Barack will come out swinging and there's plenty of ammo to throw at McLame, s-o-o-o let it begin because all the sb's are doing is throwing away their money!

FWIW --- Something is definitely in the works as Jerome Corsi has become something of a regular on the 'winger talk radio circuit including Coast To Coast AM. Corsi was on the swift boat crew and a few months back a caller took him to task for the blood on his hands thanks to the Doofus In Chief he helped elect. Corsi denied helping Dim, because the book wasn't about Bush... It was about John Kerry.

The individuals in the right-wing attack machine -- such as Marji Ross at Regnery --assume no netroots scrutiny (or any other kind) will eve be turned on them ... might be a good idea to start publishing their individual backgrounds as well as reporters who pick up their trash to legitimize it.

You know, I have no idea what the book will say and how it will say it: It's not yet out, thus I haven't read it. I have no doubt it will be a smear book. That said, at this point, I have absolutely no problem with the idea of putting Obama under the microscope: he SHOULD be put under it, as should McCain or any other candidate running for office. Professinally and fairly of course. Now until this book comes out, I dont have a problem with the idea of putting him under the microscope. If it is bull crap, he better respond faster and more professionally than Kerry did.
I have personal experience. On one occasion a Delta shuttle driver attempted to politicize me (a lone passenger at the time) about the evils of Barack Obama. She went on about biblical prophecy and that Obama is the anti-Christ. I sat there thinking to myself, wow! She expanded further by saying to me, "I know your mother raised you to be a christian man so I'm sure you know we are in the last days." I've know her for years but there is a 1st time for everything. I informed her that my parents didn't force religion down my throat and that I view all peoples religion equally. I let her know that my child's mother is Buddhist, so it doesn't matter to me what your religion is as long as you aren't nutting up killing people or making every ones life miserable. It proved to be the 1st and last time she has tried to fuse religion and politics in my presence. I tell people who have a doomsday view about modernity that their kind pop up like daisies throughout time. When their expectations fail, well, "bring on the Jim Jones kool-aid."

One good aspect is that the American public, long fooled by Rove and Bush, is starting to get wise. I believe that to some extent the 2004 election and its disastrous aftermath has inoculated us against such Rovian techniques. Simply put, a lot of people who voted for Bush in 2004 regret it, and now realize that the attack on Kerry was without merit.
But as others have opined, pushback is also crucial.
My suggestion: every time they try to slime Obama, bring up the similarities with other right-wing smears such as "(what if) John McCain fathered an illegitimate black child", and the fact that this same house published the Swift-Boating book.

I don't think the Swift Boat Veterans and other liars really had as big an impact as some believe. I think John Kerry just wasn't able to motivate folks. I wish I could agree, but I don't. I know there are polls out there for the more research savvy to find that asked people if the Swift Boat shit had and effect on their decision... with the results being that they definitely did... especially with Independents.
And yeah, Kerry and his staff did run a poor campaign. There were so many simple things he could have done that would have given him a much better shot at winning. But in the end, i guess it doesn't really matter.

I think you underestimate just how much coverage the swiftboaters will get by the Rethugs and neo-cons on Faux, wingnut hate radio, and even in the prestigious columns of Very Serious People. That said, I agree with you: Obama's campaign is not like Kerry's. It's being run by people who are very quick on the move, and Obama himself is a much finer motivator than The Lord of Sleep. (Mind, I like Kerry's politics. I just find him an uninspiring speaker.) Some Rethugs are still under the impression (because getting anything through their pinheads is very, very difficult) that because Obama has personal dignity, he's also afraid of playing hardball. He isn't. He'll pull out the knives if he needs to, and frankly, he will need to. It's goingg to be a very dirty campaign season.

Yet Mr. Obama is promising all those things, and he's not behind in the polls. Why? Because the press has dealt with him as if he were in a beauty pageant.. Mr. Obama talks about getting past party, getting past red and blue, to lead the United States of America ... But let's look at the more defined strokes of who he is underneath this superficial "beauty."
Start with national security, since the president's most important duties are as commander-in-chief. Over the summer, Mr. Obama talked about invading Pakistan, a nation armed with nuclear weapons; meeting without preconditions with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who vows to destroy Israel and create another Holocaust; and Kim Jong II, who is murdering and starving his people, but emphasized that the nuclear option was off the table against terrorists - something no president has ever taken off the table since we created nuclear weapons in the 1940s. Even Democrats who have worked in national security condemned all of those remarks. Mr. Obama is a foreign-policy novice who would put our national security at risk.
Next, consider economic policy. For all its faults, our health care system is the strongest in the world. And free trade agreements, created by Bill Clinton as well as President Bush, have made more goods more affordable so that even people of modest means can live a life that no one imagined a generation ago. Yet Mr. Obama promises to raise taxes on "the rich." How to fix Social Security? Raise taxes. How to fix Medicare? Raise taxes. Prescription drugs? Raise taxes. Free college? Raise taxes. Socialize medicine? Raise taxes. His solution to everything is to have government take it over. Big Brother on steroids, funded by your paycheck.
Finally, look at the social issues. Mr. Obama had the audacity to open a stadium rally by saying, "All praise and glory to God!" but says that Christian leaders speaking for life and marriage have "hijacked" - hijacked - Christianity. He is pro-partial birth abortion, and promises to appoint Supreme Court justices who will rule any restriction on it unconstitutional. He espouses the abortion views of Margaret Sanger, one of the early advocates of racial cleansing. His spiritual leaders endorse homosexual marriage, and he is moving in that direction. In Illinois , he refused to vote against a statewide ban - ban - on all handguns in the state. These are radical left, Hollywood , and San Francis co values, not Middle America values.
The real Mr. Obama is an easy target for the general election. Mrs. Clinton is a far tougher opponent. But Mr. Obama could win if people don't start looking behind his veneer and flowery speeches. His vision of "bringing America together" means saying that those who disagree with his agenda for America are hijackers or warmongers. Uniting the country means adopting his liberal agenda and abandoning any conflicting beliefs.

Thanks very much for the comments. I just want to mention that this sort of thing did not start in 2000. If you have a chance to read in some detail about the Weimar Republic, for example, you will find that its leaders were subjected by the German right to dozens of smear campaigns which were easily as vile as those we see today. In this country, left leaning candidates like Al Smith and Franklin Roosevelt were the targets of the same sort of thing.
The truth is, the right has always relied hatred and lies, and probably always will. Perhaps this is because they know that there is no truth to their positive arguments.

There is plenty of ammunition to use against the McCain candidacy however the Democrats had no cannon, the media belongs to those who support McCain, who supported Bush, and who have an agenda. The RNC well do their best to swiftboat the Obama campaign. Obama seems to be doing everything he can to make it easy for the Republicans to destroy his credibility. Not even close. Rich's crimes were peanuts compared to those of -- many (most, probably) of the Fortune 500. I know; in an earlier incarnation I helped to defend some of them. You can look it up: get any recent volume of the U.S. Tax Court case reporter.
This is the same publishing house that tried to get their anti-science books adopted by school boards.
Kevin Alexander Gray doesn't have the character of a swiftboater. He is an actual civil rights activist (for a long time) and he's had article on the website the progressive.
I suspect the book is more about Black politics than a multi-chapter character assasination of Barack Obama.
