CNN notices McCain's energy policy confusion
By Steve Benen Tuesday Jun 17, 2008 7:30amNice job by CNN's Dana Bash highlighting John McCain's incoherence on energy policy:
Matt Yglesias added, "What's this . . . John McCain flip-flops on energy policy and CNN tells the tale! Crazy stuff, don't they know he's a straight-talker who can do no wrong?"

Looks like McSame received a big contribution from the FEMPAC - Friends of ExxonMobil Political Action Committee!!!!

Oh, can you say frist!
The Democrats don't have to campaign against McFlip, all they need to do is search the record of videos made before and stick them up with what he's saying now. Instant flip-flop movies.
Sounds as if McCain is taking direct instructions from his "trusted" advisor Phil "Flim-Flam" Gramm.
I'm getting as sick of McCane's cur-toothed snarl as I am of Chimpy's "heh, heh, heh..."
Geeezzz, this guy flips more than Flipper. OK, Campaign financing. First he said he would take federal funding, because he wasn't getting many donations. Now he's flipping on that( and has been for awhile now) because he's getting so much money from lobbyist and special interest groups.
They call him Flipper, Flipper king of the flippers.
♠Bangkok-Bob♠ in Chiang Mai @ 3:
Exactly. That's what I keep saying. McCain is making anti McCain ads for us.
Now the governor of Florida has made his own pair of flip flops. Last week he was against off shore drilling here in Florida, yesterday he said he is for it. The SOB has made a hell of a lot of Floridians mad as hell. Yes, he is a republican so I suppose no one should be surprised that he would sell out our state for a shot at being McCain's veep.
Prepare for CNN retraction and apology in 5...4...3...2...1....
This is the biggest news of the day, please highlight this!!

God he has a horrible T.V presence these days. That smile is just creepy.
Dr. (terrorist fist jab) Matt @ 8:
yeap ....lol
So is this election going to come down to the price of gas? Seems that's what they are trying to make happen. Is America willing to say to hell with the environment if it will save me a couple of bucks on a gallon of gas five to ten years from now?
Del Capslock @ 10:
At first I didn't like McSames policies and because he copied right out of Bush's book but now I'm starting to think the guy would make a HORRIBLE president.
He doesn't remember shit and if he does remember then he's straight up lying about a ton of things (like he did in front of Katrina people) about what he did do.
This guy is starting to look a notch above bush

In the clip of McCain speaking, it sounded like there were only a couple dozen people in the room, if not less. He really should stop trying to be clever, he's not good at it. Laughing at your own perceived cleverness is not attractive.
I'm with others here, I already have trouble watching and listening to him, four years of that would be miserable. His speaking style is not conducive to keeping an audience's attention.
YCHDT @ 13:
That all depends on how you look at it. If you don't mind the country being in the same rut for 4 more years( possibly 8). If you don't mind being in Iraq indefinitely. If you don't mind never getting Bin Laden. If you don't mind the economy going down the shitter for the next 4-8 years. If you don't mind drilling for oil instead of trying to find a new way to get out from underneath big oil for the next decade or so. I think you see where I'm going with this. Cause to be honest with you, I'm tired of repeating myself.
They didn't get the memo.
As noted in comments above, once they get the memo, there will be a retraction and apology.
Its amazing how "Flip Flopping" becomes an "Evolving Position" More Rovian Doublespeak
They call him Flipper, Flipper. King of the C-word!!!
God, this fool cannot speak, he looks like a clown, flip-flops every 3 seconds, and his smile rivals a mass murderer. Seriously, McGrampa makes herr dubyah look like a Rhodes Scholar.
I just saw a poll on msnbc that showed Senator Obama ahead of McCain in Fla. That poll was taken before Governor Crist said he supported lifting the Federal ban on off shore drilling. Watch Florida turn blue on the map now. I think Crist is so sure he's going to be chosen for McCain's vice president that he's willing to throw his political future here in Florida right out the window. No way in hell will most Floridians forgive him for what he's done. Until yesterday he was a very popular governor down here.
Of course there is the financial incentive. From what I understand there will be extra money for states who allow drilling off their coast and thanks to way too many tax cuts down here and the lesser property taxes, due to the housing market going bust, our state's wallet is a bit lighter these days.
Dr. (terrorist fist jab) Matt @ 21:
RNC paving the way for a Shrub family reunion in the WH, headed by Jeb, in 2012. If McCane gets
electedinserted into the WH, he'll make us nostalgic for the Shrub "good ol' days."If it comes to starving, freezing, electricity rationing, etc, Americans will say. . . Drill, build Nuke Plants. Whatever it takes.
"McCain is enthusiastically jumping aboard with every low-rent, fearmongering, cock-sucking presidential aspirant who's ever traveled the Lee Atwater/William Safire highway."
-Matt Taibbi-
His piece is so worth reading.
I know this is superficial, but McAARP has one scary, awful smile.
pissed off patricia @ 22:
Don't look for that "extra money" to EVER appear in Floridians' wallets, just like Measure A "tax relief" and promised reductions in windstorm insurance costs that never materialized.
Face it, Floridians have a recent history of bending over, holding their ass-cheeks apart, and saying nothing. The screwing will continue.
Come on, you can't ask the media to FINALLY pay attention to John McCain and his "senior moments" where he forgets his own policy, and then make sarcastic remarks when they do. You should be saying "And it is about time John McCain's policy gaffs are illuminated by mainstream media's very dim spotlight." or some such nonsense.
Every time McCain smiles, the death's head rictus grin he shows makes me want to scream. It's creepy, and it''s like the grin never touches his eyes....
Crist won't be chosen for veep -- too many people think he's a closeted gay, and that would REALLY piss off the "base" for McCain.
As someone who grew up in Florida and spent 20 years of my life there, though, I am very encouraged to see that Obama is really starting to compete there.
And to get back OT -- I saw that Dana Bash report last night! I was surprised and impressed. I work overnight and leave CNN on as background noise and I rarely hear such solid reporting from that network. I have no idea why more of the media isn't calling him on his flip-flopping. During the primaries, I thought no one could get more flippy-floppy than Mitt Romney, but McCain has proven me wrong.
Damn, Left and Left, you beat me to it.
I'm curious about what issues McCain has NOT flip-flopped on. Why don't you make a list of the issues he HAS flip-flopped on? Thanks
Sure, kill tourism in Florida permanently in exchange for short-term gas price relief that no one will see for years.
I moved from Texas to Florida. The coastline of Texas has murky water, and I saw black oil-like patches on the beaches in Galveston. I don't think my fellow Floridians want that here.
I just hope that not only does John McCain lose Florida because of this policy reversal of his, but that he also takes "not gay" Governor Charlie Crist down with him.
And @ 28:
I agree 100%, damned if they do and damned if they don't is what it seemed like to me. They deserve a medal and maybe if they got enough positive feedback they would start doing more of the same.
CNN has a lot of credibility.
LOL right sure
pissed off patricia @ 22:
If McCrazy thought he had a chance to win Ca, he can forget about that with his flip flop and money give away to oil company's. If people think they will get lower gas prices by off shore drilling, I got a used bridge up here in Minneapolis I'll sell cheap.
Dennis @ 33:
I'm right behind you. I'm moving from Houston to Tampa this Summer. I went to St. Pete Beach yesterday and couldn't believe this is the same water as Galveston. I'm not an environmental extremist, but if you want to convince someone the damage that off-shore drilling can do....come visit Galveston.
And what a shame that I stopped noticing CNN and the other corporate news outlets.
pissed off patricia @ 22:
CNN has a poll that independents favor the Democratic Party, but they split on McGrampa and Obama.
Hi Dennis. Good post. I didn't know you were here in FL as well.
pissed off patricia @ 7:
POP, looks like the Governors move is biting him in the ass already. Today's poll shows Obama leading McLame in Florida.
Thanks Governor!
Talking about McGramp's smile... anyone notice "Giddy" Dole's Nicholson/Joker-esk perma-grin? Puts Grampy's fake teeth smile to shame.
taller ghost walt @ 42:
Looks like some plastic surgery been done?
ahhh it's not flip-flopping positions, it's an evolving view. FLMAO! Too bad so many of his voters don't believe in evolution.
my take on this guy, he waffles and really can't decide or maybe remember what his position is on so many issues. The Republicans have essentiallly written him off. They realize that even with the dirty tricks they can put into play, too much sewage has passed under the bridge to pull this dog of an election out. They have conceded the presidency to Obama. And they really don't give a damn. They have taken what they set out to do: They have acquired wealth, power and GW's legacy. If they had any thought that McCain could "steal" this election, they would be hitting with slime tactics in full force. Rather, they just allow this doddering old fool to stand out there and continue giving a diatribe that contradicts itself and doesn't make any sense to anyone. If the Repubs had any hope, they would rely on a windfall of some kind that would lower the price of gas right before the election to get people feeling a little better about the economy. Since they have written the election off, their primary goal now is to grab as much before they leave office and run and avoid impeachment or incarceration. I doubt, like the thought they give Bin Laden, that they give impeachment much thought. They know with nancy in charge that it's off the table, and it ain't going to happen.
Dr. (terrorist fist jab) Matt @ 37:
First, welcome to Florida. I used to live in Tampa.
There is nothing more beautiful in my opinion than the Gulf coast of Florida. That's why we vacation at Sanibel/Capiva each year and will be there again next month. We live on the Atlantic side of Fla. now and while the beaches aren't even close to being as pretty as the gulf coast ones are, our ocean water is just as pretty and clean.
I think this thing that Crist has done is going to backfire on him and any repub who supports him.
"Good" news on CNN.COM -- "Gas Prices Fall 2 Days in a Row"
The national average price for a gallon of regular gas fell three-tenths of a cent to $4.075, according to AAA. That's down from $4.078 the previous day.
THREE-TENTHS OF A CENT! What a fucking joke. Prices have been going up 5 or 10 cents at a clip, now they've "dropped".
♠Bangkok-Bob♠ in Chiang Mai @ 41:
That poll was taken before Crist sold us out. I imagine by the end of the week Obama's lead will be even higher.
Pardon my beer, but this is a shocker from CNN. I guess you can only avoid pointing out the obvious for so long. I still think their coverage is too bland and middle-of-the-road for me. It is just a matter of getting all of McCranky's statements out there, and over the past years, again and again. As far as the current Pres and his toady generals....History will take care of that legacy.
Dr. Acula @ 47:
just a note to let you know whats happening here in Central Calif. Regular is going for between 4.50 and 4.70 a gallon now. Premium is very close to 5.00 (depending on where you go) And diesel is at 5.00 and over in some places.
This is the way it is in Calif. It's always been this way. I can't wait to hear the screams when it hits the middle of the country. But by then, we'll be close to 6.00 a gallon here.:(
Don't they know that he's a Maverick? Why, he's the most mavericky maverick in all of Panderville!
It's great that CNN is starting to examine the "Straight Talker" only to discover what we all knew: HE'LL SAY ANYTHING TO GET ELECTED! That's not straight talk, my friends!
pissed off patricia @ 48:
Well, in that case lets just watch and wait as McWhatever continues with his "evolving-view". This has been the most interest political year in my 71 years.
I watched a stream today of Mika Brasinski, on morning joe that had Barbara boxer and two other women in government talking.
We need more women in government!!
♠Bangkok-Bob♠ in Chiang Mai @ 52:
As long as it ain't a Clinton.
Roar!
I'm sorry that Tim Russert will not be here to talk us through it all.
Well catch ya later. Things to DO.
mcSchizo is getting an airing on CNN?
notice the wording!
I hate the media.
"It's an evolving position" the Republicans say. NOW they believe in evolution. Flip flop, evolving position- what's the difference?
Del Capslock @ 10:
Don't you just want to punch that big fat cheek of his!
Republicans by and large are sweaty, creepy, crooked businessman who managed to convince the unwashed
that government is bad. Imagine how much money that McCain has stolen in his lifetime!
I also see that 63 people were killed yesterday in a car bombing in Iraq. I'm glad the surge is working...snark.
♠Bangkok-Bob♠ in Chiang Mai @ 52:
What? I can give you a big list of neocon women in government. Bad is bad regardless of sex.
mudshark @ 50:
Expensive gasoline will force Americans to do what they should have done long ago. Work near home, buy small cars, live within their means, and quit electing pro war representatives and to loose all that fat!
Underground Pirate @ 60:
I meant GOOD women, not the Jeanne Schmitt type of angry NeoCons.
I just heard on tv that this federal ban on off shore drilling was put in place when bush's dad was in office. Anyone know if that's true? If it is, I wonder what his dad has to say about this today.
Newt is circulating a petition to try to force congress' hand to lift the ban. Jesus, I could not detest these people anymore than I do today.
pissed off patricia @ 63:
I couldn't agree more. By the way POP, you are one of the few people I have seen on the Internets Tubes that uses the apostrophe correct after Congress.
L.A. Confidential @ 24:
Absolutely correct! Americans are #1 in greed and me me me. That is why we are in such a mess. America has the government it deserves!
Is it time to play "follow the leader"?
Someone should do an ad about McCain and his flip flops. He needs to be branded as a "flip-flopper" they way they did John Kerry. Cut together clips of McCain flip-flops and put right wingers in between saying the word "flip-flopper".
McCain:" I am against torture "
Bush "He's a flip-flopper"
McCain:"I support enhanced interrogation techniques".
Pro-choice----flip flop----pro-life, on and on.
There are hours of material, put on a new spot every week. Saturate the media with it. It obviously works. I know people who call Kerry a flip flopper and they can't even tell you what he flipped on.
Well, the shrub is now on asking us to let his buddies drill for oil here. I just love how Cheney came out with his the bogus "China is drilling off the coast of Cuba" just a few days before this speech. Of course, it wasn't true, but the damage was done. Pricks.
I guess Mc Dumbass forgets that drilling our way to energy independence is promoted only by self centered, psychotic frauds as the US has only 3% of known world oil reserves. Conservation and living within our means? Why how inconvenient, that's not for me, that's the next generation's problem. Let them figure it out while we have a good time at their expense. Small wonder the Repubs are in the tank with their backward looking, consumptionist philosophy.
In the Mc Lamo energy policy, only oil companies and Halliburton benefit. Thanks so much John for selling our country out with your myopic "policy", you traitor.
How long before CNN notices that Mc Cain is totally confused about every issue on the table ? He lies, he panders, he flips , he flops but hes a Rescumlican so its A-OK.

"Denver Police Stock up on Pepper Spray Guns Ahead of DNC
The Denver police is stocking up on pepper spray guns ahead of the Democratic National Convention. The city has ordered 88 projectile launchers that fire plastic balls filled with cayenne pepper and other substances. Denver is purchasing the weapon from SWAT, Security With Advanced Technology. The news comes just weeks after SWAT announced plans to merge with the company PepperBall Technologies. Meanwhile some residents of Denver are questioning why a half dozen military helicopters flew over parts of the city on Monday as part of a secret security drill. The Denver Post reported the military aircraft buzzed above the Pepsi Center, the site of the Democratic Convention. A military spokesperson denied the drill was connected to the convention. Lt. Nathan Potter said: “It’s routine preparation for the global war on terrorism.""

So now WE'RE the terrorist?
Jesus Pres Bush just spoke and for some reason I listened. Horrifying speech, laying the blame for high energy and oil prices squarely on the shoulders of the democrat controlled congress and his "predecessor".
No mention of the secret cheney meeting with ken lay and oil execs to set national energy policy in 2001.
Ted Stevens' little soldier must be standing at attention for the first time in a long time after hearing bush say he wants to drill ANWR. Hopefully enough Senators will just say no to all of bush's bullshit.
holy schnikes! cnn has done a mediocre job!!! that is note worthy~
cnn might just be the worst cable news channel. at least faux noise is known quantity, a GOP-spin machine.
Americans want enviromental friendliness as long as it doesn't make their SUV unaffordable, keep them from being able to live 50 miles from work, living in a throw-away consumption culture or keep them from being able to run their AC's full blast. We got problems, folks.

Yep, according to bush this morning, the whole thing is because of the democratic majority. I don't know who we blame for the years when the dems did not have the majority.

Apparently.
Wow.
Welcome to the New Amurcan Century (brought to you by Blackwater)
Californians hate his plan. Floridians do too. Obama just passed McCain in the polls in Florida today. With McCains flip-flop he will never regain the lead there. Blue tide roll.
Great, the Democratic National Convention is now a Military Exersize. I hope we don't see a Police Riot.
Robotic Reslugs must stay in lockstep with McBush even if they are Flip-Flopping on issues like a fish out of water.
We will only have a prosperous future if we invest in alternative energies. Our lack of foresight, planning and expenditure for energy independence could be our ruination. We need to spend, willingly, an amount equal to the fortune wasted in Iraq for foolish and illegal war. Barack has the vision and vitality to recruit those we will need for a massive energy policy undertaking.
Watch out, Florida--I happened to catch a snippet on Fox News affiliate here in Houston yesterday with Amy Myers Jaffe of the Baker Institute, which was founded by James Baker, spouting the (debunked) tale that China is about to begin drilling for oil off the coast of Cuba, and we had better start allowing drilling off of Florida to get the oil before the Commies do. Fox also cited a poll they commissioned from Rasmussen that indicates 53% of Americans favor opening currently federally protected off-limits lands to drilling like ANWAR and Florida coasts. Baker screwed you in the 2000 recount and his team is aiming to do it again.
Behold the power of big oil. Shill upon shill jumping out of the bushes agitated by the mere mention of offshore drilling. Finally the answer to our high gas prices. Hooray for american ingenuity and determination! Someone sedate me it's all too much. I'm sure by Friday the price of oil will be restored to $1.50 per gallon and I can finally buy a hummer. What a country!!!
I'm voting republican because I don't like clean sandy beaches. I prefer them oil soaked with dead wildlife all around. Who cares that the tourist industry will lose billions.
I was born and raised in Florida. Even as recently as the first Jeb Bush administration, the notion of drilling off the coast was anathema. IIRC Jeb had a public disagreement with his pinhead brother about it.
Times sure do change. Good thing tourism isn't an important industry in Florida.
A Reuters/Zogby poll indicated that 59.6 percent of Americans said they favor efforts to drill for more domestic crude while roughly the same number profess to be in favor of conservation. Does that indicate a cognitive dissonance factor of about 20 percent?
Look for the shit to hit the fan later on around October. All these flip flops will be spliced together and by the time they are done McFlipflop/Liar’s supporters will not know up from down or where McAsshole stands on anything. Every time McGramps gives a speech on policy the next day there will be a spot of McDoesn’tknowwherehestands saying just the opposite of what he was saying the day before. Hahahahahahahahahahahhahahaha
What the hell is CNN doing factually reporting on any issue? this must be the first time in the last 15 years. This is a very dangerous precedent for them. Don't they know that they have an extremely low reputation to loive down to?
"Straight talk" is Insane McCain's code phrase for "incoherence." "Maverick" is his code phrase for "Corporate conformist."
The Secret Service's code name him would no doubt be "Orwell."
bshock @ 94:
Or 1984--the number of years he's been alive.
McCain always looks like a used car salesman caught in a lie.
Thank you those who are protecting Florida, my home state. I will fight to help protect California. Let us leave something for our chilfdren and grand children, walking will make us will better health. They are gaming us.
It's nice to see some good reporting every once in a while.
You mean those Floridians would rather not have oil globs on their beaches?
How does 'new' oil drilled outta the Artic refuge? How much extra cost to get it shipped or piped to foreign refineries when its locked in the ground hundreds of miles inland? Forget about it and go drilling off-shore. Drill then pump directly into waiting ships. Accidents or pollution 'off-shore' become no ones concern.
Oil that belongs to BP or Exxon or ??? (but not to the country of origin)
When you hear the people booing Obama at McCain rallies, it always sounds like there's only about 50 people in attendance.
