McCain's popularity here seems to be taking a nose dive. This isn't scientific (though Zogby puts Obama 3 points ahead of McCaint in AZ) but I haven't seen more than half a dozen McCain't lawn signs - and those were in a wealthy neighborhood. Bumperstickers are the same story. Lots of Obama signs and stickers. Back in '00 and '04 there were W signs and stickers all over the damn place.
In casual conversation with people who are "conservative" I am hearing a lot of grumbling about McCain'ts lack of a backbone and willingness to jump from one side of an issue to another.
Luke AFB is nearby, and there a lot of military folk who have been paying attention to the way McCain't votes against benefits for veterans.
Who knows - maybe the coming election won't be close enough to steal.

Um, that would be a backup of string and cans, not sting and cans. Don't think sting transmits very well.

Very funny

Did anyone see those pics yesterday of McCain, Lindsey Graham and the dalai lama walking and holding hands. I don't know what the point was, but it fit right in with all the other photos we saw of McCain this week. The golf cart shot, the shot in the cheese aisle, the shot outside the German restaurant with the word "fudge" prominently displayed and the then to top it off the three guys walking along hand in hand appearing to go nowhere.

One thing that interests me is that people seldom realize that the United States is not a homogenous entity. We span across, the vast majority of the nation, most of North America, with Alaska and Hawaii the outliers, along with the Samoan Islands and Puerto Rico. We are composed of various dialects, with various religious and irreligious populations corresponding to different dialects and have various Native peoples and Polynesian peoples included as well. We have different faiths, people of no faith, and regional cultures tend to predominate. The GOP hates these facts, but we should keep them in mind.

And that is why I should vote for the constitutional lawyer that cast his support with the murderer in the WH by voting against the rights of the people and against the law of the land and against the values of the constitution. Today in his radio address McCain said, "With all the breathless coverage from abroad, and with Senator Obama now addressing his speeches to (quote) 'the people of the world,' (unquote) I'm starting to feel a little left out. Maybe you are, too."

The silly picture above reminds me of a question I've been wanting to ask. Has anyone else noticed that John McCain's new ads show his face enlarged and cropped so that about 3/4 of it shows and the side where he has had the cancer removed isn't shown. Also, he smiles with his mouth closed so that his terrible old yellow smile doesn't show.

I'm not trying to be mean. I'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed the attempt to make him appear younger and healthier.

Senor Cluba's picture

Does anyone else remember a few months back during the primary battle between Obama and Hillary when there was a little discussion in the traditional media about McCain getting a free pass? All the negatives were being tossed around on the Dem side of the fight and the press was doing very little digging into McCain's potential weaknesses.

McCain was even laughing about the lack of attention, happy the Dems were tearing each other to shreds.

But the refrain we heard from the traditional media over and over was, "He'll get the tough questions and hard hitting journalism down the road. Don't you worry, we'll be just as tough on him as we are being on Hillary and Obama."

That idea just blew away in the wind, it seems. Now the McCain Campaign of Complain is mad because he's not getting enough attention and the traditional media is, of course, receptive to his cries.

We should tell John that this lack of media coverage is all in his head, simply a "psychological" problem and that his campaign has become a bastion of whiners...

However, I do think Obama would be a lot better than McCain and that Obama is the best of the democratic candidates who ever had a real chance to win the nomination. Do you disagree? I also think that the two party system is flawed. What is your solution? Refusing to vote for anyone until the system has the kind of democracy that you require? Ruthless People @ 75:

Ever notice how all these Republican wifes look like transvestites and draq queens? Yet their party platform is fiercely anti-gay and anti-transgender. Strange paradox.

Not paradox. Mental illness brought on by extreme self denial. Did you read Glenn Greenwald's book Great American Hypocrites? (The book is not that great, by the way. But it's point is accurate.) Greenwald's thesis is that half the people in the modern conservative movement are hypocrites living in a deep and conflicted state of denial, and that their political actions reflect their self-loathing. He devotes the whole first chapter to John Wayne as the model case for this. How he chickened out of WWII, and then spent the rest of his life being a macho cheerleader for any and every war that came along, while accusing anybody who was against any of those wars of being a coward. The pattern then repeated itself for the current generation of Republican chickenhawks who chickened out of the Vietnam war, and then turned into the biggest cheerleaders for the Iraq war today, while accusing people who actually fought in Vietnam (ie-Democrats like Kerry) of being bedwetting cowards and wimps.

Ditto for the people who are so rabidly anti-gay, but are actually deeply closeted homosexuals in a state of panic and denial, and try to compensate by supporting any kind of gay-bashing legislation. Ditto for conservatives who were coddled by their rich parents, and were given everything on a silver platter. They feel inadequate for not having achieved anything on their own, and compensate their internal conflict and self loathing by advocating 'boot-strap' politics, and hating anybody who 'asks for a government "hand out."'

But I thought your comment was funny because one of the specific examples Greenwald uses is the example of female impersonators. He says that, much the same way as female impersonators go out of their way to OUT DO REAL women with the makeup, hair, fake nails, high heels etc., modern day conservative hypocrites who chickened out of their war are now overcompensating by being rabid pro-war nationalists, and conservatives who were spoiled by their parents are now overcompensating by despising anybody who asks for government or community help etc. So, the observation that Republican women tend to act excessively female while Republican men are constantly putting on a show of machismo fits in with Greenwald's narrative very well.

The whole system is corrupt. There are criminals running this country. The people have no control over the Industries, or the Covert ops, or the Military. That is the sick part. And one man will not change that. Look what the Repukes have done to silence Ron Paul. He will not even be allowed to speak at his own party's convention. This country has the highest number of people in prison, on probation, on parole than any other industrialized country in ythe world. More than Russia and more than China. Yet we have a murderer, that will never be brought to justice, in the WH. And Conyers just threw that in our faces, as he dictated that no one testifying should be allowed to use the word impeach. 4000 plus dead in an illegal war. Because the Bush gang lied the country and the congress into war. And please tell me whjen it was declared that passing a bill in congress met the requirements for amending the Constitution of the USA? I listen to many politicol candidates but it is not so that I can hear what makes me happy. It is to get a grasp of the man's or woman's value. Sometimes I think the Dems lay down and allow the criminals to do as they please so that they can create a shining star that will save the day and fight for truth justice and the American way. Or as we saw from Pelosi - nothing but talk. He5r hat is as empty as Bush's. And I am not ready to vote for Obama so that I can vote against McCain.

Analysis: US now winning Iraq war that seemed lost

The United States is now winning the war that two years ago seemed lost.

Limited, sometimes sharp fighting and periodic terrorist bombings in Iraq are likely to continue, possibly for years. But the Iraqi government and the U.S. now are able to shift focus from mainly combat to mainly building the fragile beginnings of peace — a transition that many found almost unthinkable as recently as one year ago........

Yet this man, who if elected would have the thinnest resume of any commander-in-chief in the last 100 years, says if he had the vote to do over again, he would still vote against the surge.

So McCain is worse than Obama. That is the message, right? And that is why I should vote for the constitutional lawyer that cast his support with the murderer in the WH by voting against the rights of the people and against the law of the land and against the values of the constitution. Because Obama is the lesser of the 2 evils. The biggest fraud ever played out in politics is that the 2 party system allows you a choice. I expected better from C&L. But I see now that C&L is just more politics as usual. *sigh*

I agree that people who think that Obama is some kind of far left socialist are deluded as are people who think Obama is going to easily fix the mess he will inherit from Bush if he defeats McCain. How do you think its going to get there if you just complain and denigrate those of us who are trying to actually change it?</blockquote

Well one needs to start somewhere. We know the truth. It was broadcast yesterday from Conyer's committee hearing room. Too bad Obama could not be present. I bet if he does win, that he will pardon the whole lot.

Since this is an open thread, I would like to share some disturbing information with you, if you haven't heard it yet. It really has me worried. I wrote to my congressman about this frightening information which apparently leaked from a secret congressional meeting, which took place on March 13, 2008. I will share my email below, along with my congressman's non-answer to my question. He wrote to me the very next day after I sent him my message, which is very unusual for him, but it was a standard form letter, which convinces me further that this information is spot on!

This information originated from an Australian Newspaper, involving the collapse of the U. S. Economy in September of 2008, the advance roundup of U. S. activists, and much much more! I read the transcript of the 2-hour open Congressional meeting that took place to approve meeting in secret, just before the "Secret Meeting" took place. Bless Dennis Kucinich's patriotic heart! He was dead set against the meeting and refused to attend! Here is my letter and non-answer.

July 21, 2008
Dear Congressman Wilson,

The House Of Representatives held a "Secret Meeting" on March 13, 2008, at the request of the Republican Whip, Roy Blunt, and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.

"Secret Meetings" withheld from the People's view, by the People's representatives, have only taken place three times since 1825, the last one (before the March 2008 meeting) took place in 1983.

We The People would like to know if the minutes of that meeting will be released to the public soon, since some of the information from that meeting has apparently leaked, and is causing widespread panic among "We The People."

According to the report that I have seen, the following points were discussed in the Secret Meeting:

* The imminent collapse of the U.S. Economy to occur sometime in late 2008
* The imminent collapse of the U.S. Government finances sometime in mid 2009
* The possibility of Civil War inside the United States as a result of the collapse
* The advance round-ups of “insurgent U.S. Citizens” likely to move against the government
* The detention of those rounded up at the REX 84 Camps constructed throughout the United States
* The possibility of public retaliation against members of Congress for the collapses
* The location of safe facilities for members of Congress and their families to reside during massive civil unrest
* The necessary and unavoidable merger of the U.S. With Canada and Mexico establishing the North American Union
* The issuance of a new currency called the AMERO for all three nations as an economic solution.

Can you verify or dispute any of this information? It is spreading quickly, and may cause civil unrest sooner than later!

Sincerely,

*My real name*

The silly picture above reminds me of a question I've been wanting to ask. Has anyone else noticed that John McCain's new ads show his face enlarged and cropped so that about 3/4 of it shows and the side where he has had the cancer removed isn't shown. Also, he smiles with his mouth closed so that his terrible old yellow smile doesn't show.

I'm not trying to be mean. I'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed the attempt to make him appear younger and healthier.

Not to mention FOX using 8 year old footage of McCain for yesterday's events! http://rawstory.com//news/2008/Fox_uses_old_footage_to_make_0725.html

And I am not ready to vote for Obama so that I can vote against McCain.

You have every right to be disappointed by the Democratic party, and disgusted by the two party system. But right now I have two questions for you:

1. Did you stay home and not vote in November 2004 because you couldn't bring yourself to vote for Kerry so that you could vote against Bush? Maybe not, but if so, did you feel any regret when Bush was re-elected, or any regret at the way things have gone since?

2. Do you think that there was absolutely no possibility that anything would have been slightly better if Kerry had been elected instead of Bush? Would any of the situations that have popped up between 2004 and now, and which required a decision to be made by the President, have been handled any differently by Kerry?

If your answer is no to both questions then I won't question your decision not to vote this time, if that's your intention.

As for getting rid of the two party system, I couldn't agree more. That's why I advocate running third party candidates, but only (for the moment) in the districts where the incumbent is not opposed. ie-there are some districts that are so heavily Republican that the Dems don't even bother to run a candidate, and vice versa. In uncontested Republican districts, the Libertarians should run a candidate, and believe it or not, if I lived in a district like that, I (a progressive) would vote for the Libertarian, and hope he/she wins! Just for the sake of depolarizing the political system. In uncontested, deep blue Democratic ridings, the Green Party should run a candidate ect.

If this is done, over time, some of the Democratic representatives will be replaced by Green Party representatives, and some of the Republican representatives will be replaced by Libertarian representatives, and then we'll actually be on the road to a four party system, which is healthy. But it's not going to happen by running third party candidates in swing districts.

YES! And how is NOT VOTING an example of citizens joining their voices, or holding their leaders accountable? By definition, politicians only respond to the people who DO vote. Never to the ones who choose not to, for WHATEVER reason.

Politics is the art of the possible. The countries that have the worst governments are the ones where the citizens don't participate in the process, either because they think they're too good for it, or they think nothing they do can ever make a difference. When ordinary citizens bow out of the political process, the only people that are left in it are the special interest groups, and that's who has been driving the political agenda for the last 30 years.

The effort being put into the McCain campaign is conspicuous by it's absence. It almost seems like they are throwing the election on purpose to a party that shows complete complicity, yet even with McCain's (lack of) performance, the "polls" show it as a close match.

I would have never voted for Bush and indeed I cast a vote for Kerry. I think Kerry would not be as corrupt as Bush. But I had problems with Gore - who I voted for also. At times I think he acted as if he wanted to lose. Yes I believe that I may vote for a 3rd party candidate. A libertarian. Yet this man, who if elected would have the thinnest resume of any commander-in-chief in the last 100 years, says if he had the vote to do over again, he would still vote against the surge.

The question is not 'which candidate would do a better job of resolving the CURRENT dumb war?' The question is 'which candidate is less likely to get us into ANOTHER dumb war?' Many people would answer Obama to both, but there's no question he's the answer to the second question. In any case, if I'm forced to make a choice between the guy with a brain in his head and no medals on his chest, and the guy who has the reverse, I'll pick the guy who can at least remember where Iraq IS, and which countries are on either side of it.

The Republicans have gotten too much milage out of putting up a brainless candidate who's only virtue is that he gives everybody a nice warm feeling, and then claiming it doesn't matter if he doesn't know his ass from his elbow because he'll delegate responsibility to a bunch of really smart advisors. Only problem is that the same gang of war mongers and trickle-down economists has been dominating the Republican roster of advisors for thirty years now, and they've just blown their credibility once and for all.

I'm surprised this little cabal of pernicious little toilet logs didn't blow it after Watergate (Cheney and Rumsfeld were both there), or again after Lebanon 1982, or again after Iran/Contra (Abrahams, Feith, Wolfowitz, Bremer...). But after the fourth climactic failure even Joe Lunchbucket is beginning to notice that this little gang of svengalis, that the right wing keeps recycling like bad trash, are all hat and no cattle. Where's the peaceful and secure world they kept promising, if only we'd adopt a more muscular foreign policy? Where's the booming economy they said we'd get if we deregulated the oil and financial industries, and cut taxes for the rich? Well? It's been 30 years. We're waiting...

Well, here we go again (no pun on Reagan intended). If McCain is elected, the front man in the head office will change, but we'll still end up with the same gang of neo-cons running things in the basement. Personally, I'd rather have a president that has a brain in his head, and is able to tell good advice from bad advice, than somebody who'll relegate his job to the PNAC gang again.
