Stewart & Colbert Mock Sarah Palin VP Choice

"The Daily Show" and "Colbert Report" aired special Democratic Convention coverage Friday night and absolutely laced into McCain's ridiculous choice for VP, Sarah Palin. As a bonus, Jon rips into FOX's Steve Doocy for seriously arguing that Alaska's proximity to Russia gives Palin meaningful foreign policy experience.

Stewart: "There was also some breaking news out of Ohio today when Republican Presidential candidate John McCain introduced the world to his third wife. Actually, no, wait, that's his running mate Sarah Palin, freshman governor of Alaska, star and producer of Emmy-winning '30 Rock.' I apologize...the star of the Emmy-winning 'Will and Grace.' No, no, I'm sorry...she's actually the mild-mannered yet troubled librarian from every Cinemax movie.

Colbert: "We're still waiting with bated breath for the big news: who will John McCain pick as his running mate. The Republican convention starts Monday and here he is at a rally just hanging out with some female supporter who I assume won some radio call-in contest. Is it Romney? Is it Pawlenty? Wait...she is?! Are you serious?! Who the f*ck is Sarah Palin? What? The sexy librarian?!"

Maybe she'll end up a Harriet Meiers and be gone by the end of the Repu'ublicist convention. Maybe this was all really just a disposable a Shiney Thing with which to piss on post-Denver Obama's parade.

Ahhhh..yes, the "same CV" BS -

Comparing Obama and Palin

Regarding the “equally thin resumes” canard:

OBAMA:

Undergrad degree in International Relations, Columbia University

Law Degree and Editor of the Law Review, Harvard University Law School

Worked for a year at the Business International Corporation and then at the New York Public Interest Research Group.

Law firm associate, Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland, Chicago

Chicago community organizer

Taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School for twelve years

Illinois State Senator

U.S. Senator

PALIN:

Undergrad degree in Journalism, PolySci minor, University of Idaho

Briefly worked as a sports reporter for local Anchorage television stations while also working in commercial fishing with her husband.

Wasilla AK City Council

Wasilla AK Mayor

AK Governor since 2006

No Contest. It is also worth noting that Obama has been vetted to date by millions of primary voters, however imperfectly we might view the vetting process. Palin was vetted by no one comparably. Mr. McCain summarily decides for the GOP voters she’s proper, absent any rational measures of relevant national experience. This is [1] an insult to women, [2] an insult to the intelligence of GOP voters in general, and [3] a dangerously expedient tactic transparently executed solely for the purpose of winning the Presidency — the public good be damned.

Just like the "tire guage" idiocy served its purpose(distracting America from all the details of Obama's energy policy,) Sarah Palin has overtaken discussion of Obama's acceptance speech. Not the only reason for choosing her (she's James Dobson's wet dream,) but the reason for the timing of it.

But she doesn't know what the VP does? Graduated from University of Idaho 1987 with major in journalism, minor in POLITICAL SCIENCE?

I think UI better recall its diploma.

As much as I may resent what I see as some of the most exploitive politics in recent times, I can't help thinking and talking about McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate. It's true that I am playing right into GOP hands by helping wipe the slate clean after this week's Democratic convention. But this is a fascinating scenario that I'm still trying to get my head around. This is Machiavellian strategy at its finest. Imagine making a decision of this magnitude, and doing it completely out of expediency. It's purely reactionary thinking on the part of the McCain campaign. Do you have any doubt that things would have gone down differently had Obama picked Hillary Clinton as his partner? I don't. Not at all.

Listening to the right wing pundits on talk radio, you'd think that this was sheer brilliance. The Christian branch of the GOP has been stroked. This woman is so "pro-life" that she had a kid that she knew was afflicted with Down's Syndrome. How wise and compassionate she must be to accept this "gift from God". She's accepted this beautiful presence in her life in such a self-sacrificing manner. It should be pointed out that anyone who makes the choice not to abort a fetus with such a severe disability is making a commitment to give of themselves in a way a parent of normally-functioning children can not ever truly understand. The amount of time and energy that the mother must invest are extraordinary*.

This Sarah Palin must truly be a noble soul, right? She's going to prioritize the sanctity of life. She's going to live up to her reputation as a crusader for "family values". She must be absolutely inexhaustible. As governor of a state of such crucial importance to the rest of the nation, she must call upon her extensive education and experience to look out for the interests of all US citizens, and not just the tens of thousands who elected her to office. And that's not all. Now she's agreed to take on a bigger role of service to our country. She's willing to accept the nomination to be our Vice President. Why is that? Well, as of the beginning of this month she didn't even know. In her own words "I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day?"

Well, in her case (should McCain win in November) she has to be prepared at any time to assume the duties of the presidency. If you're not aware of the state of John McCain's health, suffice it to say that the 72-year-old's prognosis is not especially favorable. So Palin really ought to be boning up on her prospective duties in the number 1 spot as well, because she is not what anyone could call especially well-informed when it comes to federal government (in fact she's never served in it). At the very least, she should spend some time studying Iraq. In an interview with Alaska Business Monthly in 2007, she was asked about the troop "surge" and she replied, "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq."

Of course that's a bit odd considering her oldest son is due for deployment to the Middle Eastern theater on September 11th of this year. But we've got to cut her some slack. She has a lot on her plate. I'm sure the investigation into her possibly unlawful dismissal of Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan is eating into her moose-hunting time. The results of that inquiry will be released on October 30th. Furthermore, she's going to be on the campaign trail for the next 60 odd days. In order for her to unleash her "Sarah Barracuda" persona on Joe Biden, she's going to have to receive a basic introduction to national policy and government, which should sufficiently complement her prestigious bachelor of arts degree in journalism from the University of Idaho.

And finally, the duties of motherhood never end. This will be a crucial time in the early development of her four-month-old disabled infant. And she's got four other kids to nurture. Hopefully she can carry over some of the burnished luster from her "Miss Congeniality" days that allowed her to finish second in the Alaska Beauty Pageant. Maybe she can take few a sips from John McCain's energy drink.

* Especially for a woman with four children who decides to have another at age 43, knowing that the risks of an abnormal pregnancy are dramatically heightened.

No doubt. As David Gergen said on CNN last night, this is a serious roll of the dice on the future of the nation, as she's so close to assuming the presidency without any foreign relations/policy experience.

What, Liddy Dole wasn't available? Wasn't "purty" enough? Was too old? Refused? Brought too much experience to the table and scared McCain off?

Charly Hoarse's picture

This is yet another example of how McCain has sold his soul to be president. He would be another "wind him up and run him out" chief executive with a newly cloned killer sheep as emergency standby. I just hope that he's sunk himself with this "too clever" move.

That was all a setup. They want her supporters to think they are on Hillary's side. It's total bullshit. Comparing Obama and Palin

Regarding the “equally thin resumes” canard:

OBAMA:

That gave me a boner. Here Here!

That gave me a boner. Here Here!

i found that pic yesterday and posted it

and i asked the same question

there is one other pic of the family, with said teen daughter hiding in the back

And as was said yesterday, when your opponent is falling backward over a cliff – DON’T PUSH. Most likely it is true, but nothing you can say about this will come across in your favor. Let it be…

oh, you mean like saying mccain has an illegitimate black baby...or that obama is pals with a terrorist...or that obama was raised as a muslim...or that obama sat in church while wright said anti american things???

fuck the high road

this womans daughter is no better than jamie lynn spears

and doesnt the american public have the right to know if palin is a liar

my god...if she would lie and cover up something like this...what else would she lie about?

its time to turn the rovian table on the players

NO MORE MR NICE GUY

Sarah is not unqualified for VP because she lied about her 16 y/o daughter’s pregnancy. It’s an understandable embarrassment for her family. She could even be characterized as a heroine for the effort (Religious Reich-Wing anti-abortionists jargon thrown in for good measure).

Sarah is not unqualified for VP because she’s gone hunting with her husband. Outdoorsy girl in the back-woods and all…fair enough.

Sarah is not even unqualified for VP because she’s just the 2 year Gov of Alaska.

Sarah is unqualified for VP because she has zero experience governing at that level, is inept and clueless, and was picked because she has a vagina just like Hillary – and the campaign managers et al want to divide the Hillary supporters. That’s it. The rest is tabloid trash-talk.

Should have seen this coming when last week Rove criticized the Obama campaign for politicizing the VP pick. Rovian politics dictate that you must always accuse your opponent of crimes you are most guilty.

My friends, it gets worse by the minute. Word is that Palin's alleged baby may not be her own. The report points to it being her 17-y.o. daughter's baby, with the Barbie doll govnuh covering for her, by claiming that the baby is hers!

Read it all here

This is a baad surreal movie that gets worse with every turn.

WTF? Is this for real?

the pic is real

the fact that no one knew that she was pregnant until she announced in her 7th month is real

the fact that her daughter left school for four months while having "mono" is real

need one of the tabloids to run with this

Fox News noted that she did not look seven months pregnant in their report. She did a layout for Vogue when she was five months pregnant and did not mention it. Then, she went into labor in Texas and boarded a plane and flew home to Alaska to deliver the baby. Alaska papers questioned whether it was a safe decision. Attendants on the flight said she did not look pregnant and did not request special assistance.

I'm not one for conspiracies, but this is awfully suspicious.

GOP pundits (a general collection of asshole zombies from that side) seem to think Biden can't badger Palin in the debates, becasue.... she's a woman. Glass ceiling firmly in place.

In other news, McPOW has recently stocked a 4-year suppply of Viagara, just in case opportunity arises. (Cindy is a bit too old and crusty-- the old c*nt.)

Check out McCain at the 4:22 mark where she is talking about Hillary Clinton breaking the glass ceiling. McCain is totally transfixed by her ass!! He looks up during an applause line, and then stares at her ass again. When he finally starts clapping again, he has a silly deer-in-headlights grin on his face, like he is clapping through a boner..

Wouldn't be the first time a GOP politician was bowled over by a R-AK!

I wish someone at the Today Show or Letterman or Colbert would catch that and run with it!

Mean Ol' Liberal's picture

I almost hope the Daughter Conspiracy IS true. It would kick ass on Palin's birth story, which totally horrified me.

Palin's claims on Trig's birth include that her water broke at about 4 AM Dallas time (1 AM AK time). She originally claimed that she phoned her OB in AK and received the medical go-ahead to remain in Dallas all that day without seeking medical attention, give her all important redundant speech at the Governor's summit, wait around for the next flight home and board a seven hour flight. She claimed later that she phoned her OB AFTER the speech.

Once your water breaks, your fetus is at risk for numerous infections and complications. The sac that protected the fetus is now going away. Without it and without labor, the fetus won't survive. Palin was carrying an already compromised fetus she knew to have Down Syndrome. What she would not have known is how SEVERE the DS was. It could have been bad enough that the delays after her water breaking would have led to fatal complications. It could have been exacerbated by her dallying around, leading to blindness or even further brain damage.

You are to seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY with amniotic leakage even with a healthy fetus - not seek it sometime around 21 hours later after locking yourself into a flight that lasts seven hours without ever telling the flight crew that you could be in labor at that time.

This Fetus Lover didn't give a rat's ass about the life of her own son. She sold this story as "Alaskan toughness" and the ignorant knuckle-draggers who worship at the altar of Macho lap it up, as if Palin's choice was solely one that caused her more discomfort. It risked a LOT for Trig Palin, including his life - and for what? So that she could deliver a speech stating a position she'd already stated numerous times? "Yay Big Oil! Drill! Drill! Drill! And Feds? Send more money to Alaska so we can drill!"

"Pro-Life" my a$$. That series of choices she made, all deliberately avoiding medical attention actually smack of WANTING Trig to not make it.

So, really? I'd prefer the Daughter Rumor was true. I suspect, however, that it has no weight at all.

Herself's picture

What the fuck! Special episode of the Daily Show/Colber? They need to advertise these things more! Both clips were exactly what I needed today!

Some slighlty disconnected thoughts,

- I find the baby story more fascinating than I probably should. The most intriging parts are the daughter pulled out of school for three months; the ten hour (or whatever) flight back to Alaska AFTER her water broke, with flight attendants not noticing anything, the late announcement and coworkers apparently not noticing anything at seven months along. I say this because one of my own coworkers is seven months pregnant, and it's pretty noticeable! But it's also possible that that varies for every woman, and with photoshopping I'm not putting any stock in any internet pictures. Still, it just seems like all this would be easy to clear up with a few medical reports, or something - verify that the daugher actually had mono, and a pregnancy is pretty well-documented, isn't it? (and yeah, I totally agree that if this has anything behind it, I pray democrats keep their mouths firmly shut - let the media/tabloids inform America...)

- I can't help but worry about ex-Hillary supporters. McCain's pick tells me he clearly thinks women are stupid. That's wrong, obviously, but hopefully there aren't enough disgruntled/irrational voters out there to actually make a difference. (I did just spend an hour reading the comments at a PUMA blog, not the best thing for the soul)

- I left the political blogosphere entirely during the primaries because I was fed up with the sexism and outright mysoginy in the liberal blogs directed at Hillary (who was, in fact, on our side - at least as much as Obama). I admit I have to worry about what happens when there's a woman in the race, and this time she's THE REAL ENEMY, so, you know, you're allowed to shit all over her even more! I hope criticism of Palin stays centered around her policies, lack of experience, general stupidity, ect.., god knows there's enough fodder there for everyone.

Best line: "Oh, thank God! Oh, that's my emergency talking points fax!" A great reference to how even politcally involved conservatives/Republicans had to ask, "Palin? Who the hell?" She really makes no sense, as a VP choice (I guess it's kinda tricky finding someone is hardcore conservative, has a vagina and a semi-high position in the Republican party).

I have a feeling that this choice is going to turn out bad for McCain and his campaign - the Obama campaign has plenty of time to sit back for now. You are quite right that Palin's recounting of the birth is odd to say the least, and hard to believe. And, I know that every situation is different, but this is a woman who had already given birth to 4 children, so one might expect that the labor would progress more rapidly in a fifth pregnancy after the amniotic sac broke. I don't know very many women who would have waited such a long time and risked a 7-hour flight if what she said is true.

I'm not "political" I don't vote because I assume that anyone powerful enough to get on the ticket is probably not a nice person, and probably has so many hidden agendas once in office that they will not resemble the candidate they once were.

However, I've taken quite an interest in this election. First there was Hilary and "Bill". I really thought maybe she'd work out. I know that it takes more than ideals and party nomination to be Pres. You have to have political contacts in the House and the Congress to get your bills passed. You have to have "friends" everywhere to ensure any cooperation at all, or you're totally ineffective and your hands are tied. I beleive that Hilary and Bill have those connections, so I might have voted for her. I beleive she is stubborn and strong enough that she would be leading the country, not Bill. He was along for the ride this time. She would however have his expertise just for the asking. That would have been nice.

Now there's Obama and McCain. Obama seems "nice". I don't know how much support he'll have if elected among Congress and the House. He'll need lots of support and advice. Does that mean that his cabinet members will be running the country? I don't know.

There's McCain, war hero. I've read troubling things about his vindictiveness and temper and I don't like it. I read where he once fired an aid for questioning him and then made the point of going to her new boss to ask that guy to fire her also. Frankly, McCain sounds like a lose cannon. I don't like it that he had an affair on his first wife during a midlife crisis and dumped her for a woman 25 years younger than himself. His first wife said, "He wants to be 25, not 40". No one much seems to say anything about his display of no morals at all. What about his vows? If a man cannot keep his vows and conducts a tawdry affair, should he lead a country?

Then there's Palin. I don't know anything about her except what I read. I'm not impressed. What about her and her husband's long term involvement in the "AIP" for Alaska to succeed from the US? Lots of radicals there that hate the US. I'd love a [qualified] woman in the white house. I haven't seen anything about Palin that makes me think she is qualified. I simply think she is McCain' answer to Hilary, he thinks he'll get her votes and Palin will counteract Obama's popularity and charisma. It's scary that she could one day be Pres. For that reason [IF I voted]I wouldn't vote for McCain.

I don't care about her hunting and fishing and small town ways. I don't care about her pregnant daughter or whether her baby is her own. NOT relevant.

I do care about some of her platforms. No abortions even in cases of incest and rape. That's harsh. She comes across as a woman who will expect the USA to be a duplicate of her and her very conservative morals. I'm wondering if we'd end up in a Nazi state? Does she have a clue about economics or diplomacy? Does she care about our war vets and their care? 50,000 vets have PTSD at this time and we don't have the facilities or the resources to treat them. Yet McCain and Palin want more and more of our boys over there fighting, dying and becoming disabled. Where's the promises of state of the art vet facilities, and benefits and care when they get home?

I guess I'm an Isolationist. I want the USA to take care of its own. End hunger in the USA, provide cheap housing for its poor, help the street people get mental care, provide cheap heath insurance, build up Social Security and Medicare, Subsidize programs like Meals on Wheels and Hospice care, give tax breaks to the under $30k bracket, tax the people who have millions. Quit sending our jobs to India and China.

I want an American to answer when I call Dell customer service!! Stop importing anything from China, stop supporting stores like Wal-Mart who import just about everything from China and are putting hundreds of American businessess out of business, like Rubbermaid.

Encourage American small business and mfg to start up again. End Nafta and take care of American businessmen who in turn can create good jobs for Americans, Stay out of other country's politics, stop trying to police the world. Every country hates us. Why not be like Canada and mind our own business? IF we get involved in foreign countries go to places where we can stop genocide like Africa, why not? Because we aren't interested in the oil there.

Help subsidized child care so mothers can afford to work.

Develop alternate fuel sources and break our dependence on foreign oil and products. Buy our vegetables from USA farmers, not Chili, Buy our grains and livestock from USA farmers not other countries. Let other countries take care of themselves, let's us take care of everybody in America not just pet causes.

We need to make going to college affordable to the masses. Other countries do and they are so far ahead of us in technology and the sciences. We soon will be a nation of high school grads. The government is raising tuition, making loans harder to repay and placing ceilings on how much you can borrow while in school, causing some seniors to run out of loan money before graduating. Between student loans and insurance companies and malpractice fees, soon there won't be anyone who wants to be a Dr..

Teachers and Nurses are already so scarce there is a national problem. If we have no qualified, dedicated teachers, what is going to happen to our children? Yet we want to pay teachers under $30k a year and make their student loan interest so high they'll be paying for life? Not only that, now they are expected to risk their lives in the classrooms because our schools have become hunting grounds for crazed shooters on antidepressants and not proper psych care.

We can spend Trillions on the armed forces yet FEMA sucks and can't help our own population.

We have gangs out of control, drugs on every street corner and ghettos eating up American. Why can't anyone do anything about that?

Foreign investors own most of America and we'll regret that. Arab companies take over family owned companies here and people who have worked at that company for 20-30 years and whose families have also worked there are bullied into quiting or fired with all of their benefits dissolved. [That happened to my husband's company, all of the old timers were "encouraged to leave or fired" and people were hired in their place for $7.50 an hr]

I'd vote in a second if I believed in American politics. If I knew that a candidate would do all of the things above and not just talk the talk. I know that there are "deal" in place before a candidate every steps into office. The lobbyist own Washington. The foreign deal-makers own America.

It seems to me this is yet another one of life's major decisions which John McCain made with his penis.

But it's kind of hilarious how the fearful right is now going to have to do a McCain-style flip-flop on the issue of experience. I wonder if any of them will catch the irony of them saying her lack of experience isn't an issue? I doubt it- they don't have a track record of even noticing (or acknowledging) their hypocrisies.

I guess Republicans were FOR experience before they were AGAINST it.

It's also going to be unintentionally hillarious watching Repukes give high praise for the biggest socialist in America: Alaska is the biggest model in the USA's existence on wealth redistribution. Not only do people in Alaska pay no taxes... they actually receive money from the oil companies, laundered through the state!

Sideline Observations—Senator McCain and VP Picks

I used to be a big fan of John McCain. I was touched by the courage he showed in his POW experience and, in the past, bought his “maverick” and “straight-shooter” monikers. When my son deployed to Iraq a few years back one of the items I placed in his first pkg from home was McCain’s autobiography. I’ve learned a lot over the past year and, while I will always honor his service and, in particular his courageous decision to remain with his peers when offered the opportunity to exit captivity, I now find very little else to admire or respect about this politician. I had known about the “Keating Five” story, but hadn’t been exposed to the tale of how he betrayed and ultimately abandoned his crippled wife. And, I might add, it took some digging to find that story. Curious how the media who allegedly are so favorably biased toward Senator Obama despite looping the Rev Wright and bitter American stories for weeks on end have made scant mention of the these items in McCain’s autobiography. McCain’s stated intent to run an honorable, issues-oriented campaign was quickly abandoned and, from my perspective, he has done exactly what he falsely accuses Senator Obama of—reversing his positions at whim and saying and doing anything his campaign staff advises him will help him get elected. The latest and most cynical example is his pick for his running mate. He assured us that his selection would reflect his best judgment of the most qualified individual available to be just one heartbeat away from the role of Commander-in-Chief and leader of the free world and this is the best he could do. There’s no honor in the choice he made, no notion of “country first” it was a calculated political move that is an insult to his fellow countrymen. A parsing of Gov Palin’s credentials is pointless—she’s as much a victim of McCain and his campaign’s cynicism as the voters are.

On the other hand, I can’t be more pleased with the choice of Senator Biden as Barack’s running mate. Senator Obama passed the test of his first executive decision with flying colors by choosing the very best individual available for his running mate. Senator Biden is truly an experienced statesman and a straight-shooter who has walked the talk when ti come to the values of family and work. And putting his country first. His personal story is inspiring and his enthusiasm for the opportunity to move this country forward at the side of Senator Obama is clear. I am delighted to see a politician of his stature have a lifetime of service to his country be rewarded in this way and I am confident that he and Senator Obama give us the greatest opportunity for maintaining our security and dealing with the serious challenges we face on so many fronts. Contrast that team with a cynical, saber-rattling, out-of-touch pol who can’t even get the geography and the players right backed up a social conservative princess who is ill-equipped to operate on the national and world stage and I think the choice for the voters should be clear.

I think Sarah Palin is a red herring, a distraction to keep the attention from the other players in the McCain campaign, such as Randy Scheunemann.

I think that the presence of Randy Scheunemann, the former PNAC operative, as McCain's principle foreign policy advisor, clearly establishes that with respect to foreign policy, McCain equaling four more years of Bush isn't campaign rhetoric, just fact.

I think Scheunemann is a better target than Palin. While we should engage in the vetting process ourselves with respect to Palin, we should not ignore the malignant presence of yet another PNAC operative in the McCain camp, Scheunemann.

I'd love to see a commercial for Obama that showed the following: (1.) The coffins of dead soldiers arriving in the U.S., (2.) Bush joking about not finding WMD at a press corp event, (3.) more coffins, (4.) McCain singing Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran to the tune of the Beach Boys "barbara Ann", (5.) followed by more coffins and a voice saying "McCain - Ready to lead? - Hardly".

This time around, we have got to take the gloves off. And we can't let the Republicans control the dialog. Instead of them setting the dialog, we need to be setting the dialog with questions like "If the president deliberately mislead the nation into an expensive war by misrepresenting that a national security threat existed, with knowledge that no threat actually exist, should the President be impeached?"

Another question should be if we let the marketplace develop medical solutions, what is the incentive for developing cures as opposed to maintenance regimes from anything like restless leg syndrome to irritable bowel syndrome? Since cures don't create recurring revenue flows, how does the ideology of "letting the marketplace decide" enhance shareholder value? Cures don't. Maintenance regimes do, which is why we're seeing a rise in medical costs double the rate of inflation. There is no hope with McCain on this issue; there is the shadowy hope with Obama.

So Sarah Palin is hardly qualified to step in, if a 72 year old heartbeat requires her to do so. But, like Palin indicates a judgement issue, so does Scheunemann. (Which explains Lieberman's behavior.)

OK, this woman with five young children is the candidate's choice. It appears that the rumor about her daughter could be true and apparently had been fairly common knowledge in Alaska. I have no problem with the family keeping the child, I don't even have a big problem with the idea that the famly claimed it. They have chosen to give this little boy a life filled with love. I do have a problem with leaving your sixteen year old daughter hanging in the wind until the tabloids discover this. This is the sort of event that eliminates her as a candidate who might be truthful about anything. There are apparently enough skeletons in her closet to start a medical school. But it does come down to this. You protect your children - at all costs. Mothers do not put their children in a place where they can be torn apart by the press. Had she refused, (or had anyone done any basic vetting), the child - 16 and troubled - could get through a difficult life without world attention. To accept this - if this story is true and it seems to have legs that have been growing for months - is a narcissistic act. I've known other girls who were hidden for awhile and then mom has a surprise baby. The girl will never recover and now - everyone knows. How cruel.

I agree 100% with this. I've been pushing this Scheunemann issue ever since I saw Pat Buchanan's article about him. Robert Kagan is another McCain advisor, AND another PNAC Neocon. While the issues raised about Palin (e.g., lack of experience) are all valid, it is also a distraction from what we are voting for....the President, not the VP. John McCain has made what he calls "jokes" like the "bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, Iran"; like "cigarettes are one way to kill them (Iranians)"; he has figuratively made comments such as we will be there in Iraq for 100 years; and a week or so ago, he told a woman that he agreed with her that we should have a military draft so we can keep the proper number of people in the military to capture Bin Laden. These may all be "jokes" or just saying things to please his base, but when he actually has Neocons like Scheunemann and Kagan, PNAC Neocons, as his top foreign policy advisors, this is no joke; the man, who is losing his mind, will rely on the advice that these advisors give, and that advice will be to bonb and attack Iran and other nations they see as threats.

Is the only way Obama can win is to diss Sarah? She has done nothing to anyone. Bunch of creeps attacking her.

listen joanie this is the real world. elitism has nothing to do with sarah. if you want to vote for sarah go for it. she is NOT ready to be president if called upon. i don't see how she and her husband are going to be able to care for 4 children one being a newborn. most of the attacks are in concern for this country.....iraq,iran,n.korea,pakistan,afghanistan,west africa
russia,......give me a break she may know ketchikan but i doubt she knows afghanistan......geeze mccain thinks iraq borders afghanistan..........please get a grip....and this has nothing to do with gender for me i'm fine with a female president......the toughest event alaska has is how to spend
oil money.....oh yeah she was endorsed by senator t. stevens
a crook of the fiscal responsible party

Wait till this Bombshell hits the News!

wow........i hope it's not a trap. i will say this it's interesting that she didn't announce until she was in her 7th month.
i also find it interesting that this is the family value party.
i never/ever underestimate women but to have a newborn with down syndrome and campaign to be the v.p. of the united states. maybe it's me that sounds like a lot not much time for the kids....oh well i know people do it but the v.p. job.....and one heart beat away....this can't be real.

Sorry to sound like a broken record, but it doesn't have to be a trap to be a Bombshell that will blow up squarely in the Democrats' face. If untrue, Democratic surrogates like Daily Kos look like gutter snipes. If true, the Democratic surrogates STILL look like gutter snipes, and Palin jumps ten points in the polls on sympathy. She becomes a hero for doing this to protect her daughter's reputation, and doubles her street cred with the pro-life movement. I can't think of anything that would distract from the issue of her light resume EXCEPT something like that!

Uncle Joe Mccarthy @ 44:

And as was said yesterday, when your opponent is falling backward over a cliff – DON’T PUSH. Most likely it is true, but nothing you can say about this will come across in your favor. Let it be…

oh, you mean like saying mccain has an illegitimate black baby...or that obama is pals with a terrorist...or that obama was raised as a muslim...or that obama sat in church while wright said anti american things???

fuck the high road

Three things:

1. There's a huge difference between this and the other things you mentioned. None of those other smear jobs could be construed as having been done for ALTRUISTIC and NOBLE PURPOSES. Her daughter made a mistake, and her mother did this to protect her. Throwing yourself under the bus to save your own daughter is NOT the same as using a racist whisper campaign to tear down an opponent.

2. The public is just beginning to understand what a bunch of flaming assholes the Republicans ARE, and all of the disgusting methods they've used to cling to power, and are about to toss them out because of it. If you think this is the time to start IMITATING them, you need to have your timing adjusted.

3. Those negative smear tactics that Bush and Rove used in South Carolina (as an example) only helped him in one of the most bitter, hateful states in the union. But they HURT him elsewhere. The McCain "illegitimate black daughter" smear was brought up and talked about in every other primary after South Carolina as a reason to NOT vote for Bush. True, he won IN SPITE of it, but I'd still argue he won IN SPITE of it, not because of it.

The fact is that smears that are TOO negative almost always blow up in your face. The really EFFECTIVE tactics that Rove used, and which are rarely talked about, had nothing to do with DIRT. They were SUBTLE! Only total morons use completely dirty tactics like that, and they usually blow back on the user more than they do on the target.

McCain is a dumbass for picking her.

There's two "memes" I'm trying to get started and I need help spreading them.

1. Picking Palin as a "substitute" for HRC is like telling black people they can be satisfied that Thurgood Marshall was replaced by Clarence Thomas.

2. President Palin vs. Russia's Vladimir Putin
President Palin vs. Iran's Machmoud Amahdenijad
Please...

Let me know if you like either of them. If so, please spread them around. If women realize they are being suckered by Clarence Thomas with a vagina, they'll show their true intelligence and disdain for condescension. If people realize that we're possibly going to have a 44 year old news anchor, hockey-mom Commander in Chief standing up to some of the most despicable and ruthless world leaders, they'll make the right choice.

I want to see the birth certificate for Trig.
It happens to be a felony to falsify a birth certificate.

The infant child Trig is the (now) 17 year old unwed daughter's who was out of high school for 5 to 8 months (depending on which female classmate you believe).

Sarah Palin has been lying about using the breast pump.
These Dominionist fundies are embarrassed by it and it is certainly a story BECAUSE they rant about unwed mothers ALL the time.

Also it makes Sarah Palin a Republican-as-usual liar.

Sarah Palin was just a Rovian Patsy. More and more dirt will come out about her, and the republican party will be "forced" to replace her with a traditional Veep (like Mittens, or Pawlenty). She was just used to take away the Obama effect.

HEY! Stay away from this story regarding the daughter possibly being the baby's mother! It stinks of ROVE.
Just ask Dan Rather. If it's not a setup, but still true, then the unhinged Christian Right will plotz themselves with joy over their Righteous canidate.

LEAVE IT BE.

I have to agree. If everybody jumps on it and derides her, they then have the perfect weapon. They fire back with the sexist angle, Dems attacking her, attacking her handicapped baby, attacking her family, viscous rumors, it's not about issues, etc., and on and on. End result? Many women see it and sympathize. I'd exercise caution with this. Might be the reason it's being pushed on some conservative blogs.

Next thing Palin will ask: I want somebody to ask ih. answer me, uh, for me, what exactly is the congress? Are they like an oil company? if they are why don't they come and drill in Alaska, and on their way tell them to kill all polar bears.. you know those polar bears are Russian spies.

there were people praying for rain on the Dems. they had beautiful weather. and now the Repugs will be dealing with a major hurricane when they start their convention? She has, I would suggest, a very twisted sense of humor!!

The Republicans can pray for rain, but when God responds, he gets to put it where and when he wants to.

Yeah that McCain must've picked this one out of a hat or somethang.

Ask mr or mrs. Joe Smith on the Street, the low-info voters. They'll say something like this:
Mr. Joe: Sarah who?
Mrs. Joe: Palin? Who is that? I've never heard of her.
Mr. Joe: I thought he was gonna pick Romney or someone like that.
Mrs. Joe: Where is she on taxes, experience
Mr. Joe: the war...health care...
Mrs. Joe: All that stuff. Do I gotta Goggle her or something?

OK, so the Christian Taliban is revved up. But the other voters McMoron is pulling for ain't. In fact, she has turned off many of them.

But she's also a blatant liar who didn't think her plan to attempt to cover up her oldest daughters pregnancy would ever come back to haunt her.

As a mother this is a woman I cannot relate to. How do you choose to have five children and choose not to nurture them? Especially the baby, this is a child that needs and deserves to have the care and love of all the family and will require it. You don't give birth and walk away two days later to return to work, BECAUSE SHE UNLIKE OTHERS HAD OPTIONS. You rest, hold and nurse your infant. This is not a woman that should be a heart beat away from the presidency, as she has no heart. How can the right to lifers laud this woman? She is not a Mother she is a baby machine.

I AM DISGUSTED WITH HER FOR ACCEPTING AND MCCAIN FOR ASKING!

She's a politician. They lie. What's the big deal? Clinton lied repeatedly about his side menu women. Dems had hissy fits over impeachment because what happens in the private lives should remain private, was the line shot loud around the world by Dems. Edwards lied about poking a fugly blonde. Dems defended him, then silenced and hid him.
I don't see any difference here. If her daughter made a mistake, and she claimed it as hers, so be it. If people are seriously "curious" because Palin lied, then I suggest you look at any politician. They ALL lie.

I think it's important to note that Obama is running for PRESIDENT. The only way Palin would be running the country would be if McCain were to pass away. I don't think anyone's REALLY expecting that to happen. Hopefully it doesn't. McCain's background is SIGNIFICANTLY better than Obama's. Those are the direct comparisons that people should be making. Palin seems like a tough cookie which is one of the reasons why she was chosen. I love Stephen Colbert. I think he's comic gold. But when his liberal bias comes through, he's a little annoying. I'm so sick of tuning into comedy shows and getting the same old crap. Palin is a worthy opponent and the people of America will decide in the end. I'm just so sick of the comparisons. Obama is tremendously inexperienced. McCain has many years of senate experience with the added bonus of an admirable struggle as a POW. Compare the candidates by their category first.... and Obama fails to live up to anything McCain has done. If you're a Democrat than you would obviously vote accordingly. But I'm so sick of the biased media acting like it's their business to report everything as if the Republican is the bad guy. Give it up. Let the people decide! I know TDS w/ Jon Stewart makes no obvious indication that they are objective but it's pretty darn hilarious that they are starting to point fingers at Palin already. As if Obama didn't come completely out of nowhere as well. I hate the media more than anything. The Democrats I know aren't as annoying at the liberal media.
