I recently received the following email from the McCain campaign, titled "Shameful Attacks":

Friends,

You've surely seen the shameful attacks Senator Obama and his liberal allies have launched against our vice presidential nominee, Governor Sarah Palin.

Even before our national convention, the Obama campaign dispatched what The Wall Street Journal called a "mini-army of 30 lawyers, investigators and opposition researchers" to Alaska to dig up dirt for their personal attacks on Governor Palin and her family. FactCheck.org has called the attacks on Governor Palin, "completely false" and "misleading." However, the Obama Democrats continue to launch these attacks, hoping you'll never find out the truth.

These misleading, offensive attacks must be stopped.

Factcheck.org was on Hardball this week, and in a very non-partisan manner debunked McCain's claims:

icon Download | play icon Download | play (h/t Heather)

From a man who just recently approved the most misleading and sleazy attack ad of the entire political season. Second, the very same FactCheck.org website that John McCain cites in his email has a new post up today saying that McCain's attack ad is distorted their finding.

For McCain to say that "these misleading, offensive attacks must be stopped" is downright ridiculous. But then again, it's becoming clearer every day that McCain's strategy consists of lying and lying, hoping that the media and fact-checkers can't keep up. It's gonna be a long, tedious two months. Buckle your seat belts.

What shameful attack exactly has Obama launched against Palin?

Was it that TV-ad where he implied Palin is some kind of pervert? Oh thats right that was a McCain ad against Obama.

Wow! The MSM actually doing it's job? Where were they in 2000 and 2004? I guess millions of newly registered voters who are extremly pissed off is changing their tune. The public isn't buying the MSM's bullshit anymore and they know it.

I understand the motivation to call out the other side for hypocrisy and dishonesty, but at some point (sooner than later), Obama et al. need to stop giving so much attention to the other side and start talking about the good things Obama-Biden have to offer. In fact, I think Obama's best strategy at this point is to completely ignore the other side from here on out and only talk about his side and what they bring to the table. Focusing on the other side (even if it's negative) is still focusing on the other side (all publicity is good publicity), and is only making the other side stronger.

If you had a female surgeon you would expect her to have held a a scalpel prior to your pending surgery.

If you had a female lawyer you would expect her to have been in a courtroom previous to your pending lawsuit.

If one had a female auto mechanic you would expect her to have held a socket wrench before.

There would be nothing sexist in any of those expectations.

It is not unreasonable to expect a candidate for Vice President of the United States have minimal qualifications for the job.

Sarah Palin does not. There is nothing sexist about the expectation that she should have.

Choosing her was a complete act of cynicism.

Maybe it's not lying. As I watch McCain . . . his behavior is reminiscent of what I witnessed in my Dad, as he lost his intellect to (undiagnosed) Alzheimers. My 84-year-old Mother, on the other hand, is extremely sharp. Occasionally she will "lose" a word or a fact--but she doesn't just substitute ANY word or fact to fill the void. Beyond early stages of dementia, my Dad could still "carry on a conversation" if all he had to do was nod agreeably, and occasionally interject some key word or phrase (sometimes inappropriate to the conversation) to give the appearance of attentiveness and participation. Didn't we see the same thing with "The Great Communicator"? Only thing is . . . McC is angry, seems to have impulse-control issues, and primitive survival techniques--all in all, much scarier than Reagan. And Second-Amendment Sarah does not inspire confidence as a 'back-up.'

We were just watching the hurricane damages on msnbc. All the while there was a crawl on the screen talking about Palin saying she was against earmarks and an explanation about how many she has requested just this year. I'm wondering if msnbc has jumped the republican ship. Are they now willing to sail into the dangerous waters of not sucking up to the McCain Campaign? Maybe that's what happens when the msm gets attacked by a campaign, as McCain's campaign has attacked the them.

For McCain to say that “these misleading, offensive attacks must be stopped” is downright ridiculous . . .

It is utterly predictable too.

Notice that the Republican strategy this year is one of projection and cooptation. Obama's campaign theme of change was working, so they coopted it. The notion that the government is fundamentally broken is shared by almost everyone, so they're yammering about it like they and their ilk are not the ones who broke it.

And now, they know that they're the ones who have been lying and smearing, and they know they've been called out on it by even some otherwise reliably pro-Republican talking heads in the media. So, they're coopting the theme. They know Obama is going to talk about how they're lying, so they'll just come out and say he's lying.

I just remembered where I've seen Sarah Palin before.

Monica Goodling.

Yep, Sarah Palin looks in a mirror and sees Monica Goodling staring back at her.

But would anyone even contemplate having Monica Goodling running for vice-president, a heartbeat away from being president?

The Monica Goodling who broke law after law after law at the U.S. Justice Department, who abused the public trust by using her position at the Justice Department for personal and religious vendettas against other U.S. citizens, who then lied about what she had been doing?

The same Monica Goodling who graduated from a fourth-rate law school, who got a high-level job at the Justice Department and immediately began to break her oath to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution from our nation's enemies, both foreign and domestic...from someone like herself?

The same Monica Goodling who decided that her religious beliefs and her religious "laws" trumped the "rule of law," our nation's laws, as established by our Constitution, with Monica Goodling implementing a religious litmus test for Justice Department job applicants, directly violating our Constitution?

Oh. That Monica Goodling.

Sarah Palin IS Monica Goodling.

And if Palin gets to be vice-president, a heartbeat away from president, then there is no doubt in my mind that Palin will do as much damage to our nation, our Constitution, as Goodling did to our Justice Department, our Constitution...which in my view far exceeds the damage done and deaths incurred on 9/11 by an attack on our nation of right-wing religious fundamentalist fanatics.

The al Qaeda terrorist attack on 9/11 was a hit-and-run event, while Palin, Goodling and so many other domestic religious fundamentalist fanatics are into a slow-motion, cancerous attack on our Constitution and the inherent liberties of all U.S. citizens, with the preeminent American liberty being the right to be free from tyranny, especially religious tyranny!!!

I will definitely vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Neither one of the Democratic Party candidates strikes me as being a religioius fundamentalist fanatic, someone out to subvert our Constitution and establish a Taliban-like theocracy in America.

Obama/Biden '08 ! ! ! !

It seems the McCain/Palin campaign might even be lying about the "large crowds" the devious duo was drawing according to RAWSTORY/Bloomberg.
The campaign claimed they were getting the figures from the secret service and in one case from a fire marshall in Va. In both cases the sources sited denied giving the McLies campaign any attendence figures.

McCain is a known to like to gamble and he seems to have doubled down in running a blatantly dishonest campaign,

It's simple, if close to half the voters are low information (a polite way of saying dumb or ignorant) or racist, the GOP can purge thousands of voters, flip some votes in a swing state and pull out a win.
On the other hand, if McCain runs an honest campaign he doesn't have a chance.

Whether the manner in which Obama is addressing the other side is counterproductive could make for a worthwhile debate, but admonishing him to ignore the lies and attacks smacks of lethal naivete.

In this country, measuring by popular opinion, to be accused is to be convicted. Not fighting back only makes people more certain of your guilt. And that's with anything. It's especially true in politics. In fact, it's precisely how Democrats have lost election after election after election since 1994.

Thank you for saying this. It's bad enough that they can't even think of any new ideas of their own. Instead, they have to rape and pillage a successful campaign in order to get that post-convention boost.

Everyday, I wonder what will it take for the American people to open their eyes against McCain and Palin. Both truly stunk in interviews, speeches and other public venues. You'd think that alone would have sunk them. But no! Here comes the cavalry in order to clean up behind them and to make sure to continuously blame Obama for every little nuance.

Seeing these acts of wrongdoing by the McCain camp happen with little or no refutation should make anyone livid beyond control.

I would ask what happened to justice and decency. But after Bush got into office, those two concepts are on the endangered species list.

Frankly, I think McCain's ads are going to do him more harm than good if they continue. The "bridge to nowhere" tale has pretty much been debunked by every media player. It is so blatant that I think most people will think twice about his ads, except for those who will vote for him regardless. Couple this with the fact that the campaign essentially told he media that they would allow them to speak with Palin when and if the campaign wanted. I think that attempt pretty much made the media take notice. Even Fox News is mocking the campaign and their attempt to limit information and spin. The veracity of his ads are now a major subject and the media seems to be interested, if for no other reason to laugh at the stupidity.

I hope this does hit hard....just need to be prepared for repug 527 ads....betcha they'll be on abortion....in other words, there need to be a lot more 527s ready for Obama as well.

Funny you should say that because as we speak there is a war going on at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQobIUE1zTU
and the repugs are already trying to equate aerial wolf & bear killing with abortion. That means they are trying to change the subject. I knew this ad would hit hard and it is.

I give up on your American election. Two years of campaigning later, and we get lies about lies, and no issues. No wonder your country is so fucked. I come to C&L half as often as I used to. Not because of any fault of C&L, you're just reporting events.

I just think your country is in a mess and most of the citizens are too stupid to care. The rest of the world is scratching it's head, and cluing in, "what a bunch of fucking idiots" live over there.

Most people outside of N. America don't really understand what "redneck" is. I guess they're finding out now.

Hey Edwin, calm down. Obama will win, and by a margin that is larger than anyone now imagines. Yes, we make a big f*cking mess here in the States, but eventually we get around to cleaning up. We now arrive at another big U.S. cleanup moment, our biggest since 1932. Awkwardly, inelegantly, but we are finally preparing to arrive. And those massive LIES to which you allude are just the catalyst that was needed. By going over the top McCain has jumped the massive, lie-bloated mother-of-all-SHARKS. Soon it will be game, set and match!

We're about to rejoin the world community. Please hang in there and keep rooting for us to get it right.

Only thing missing in these two post was the violin music.

Serioulsy though, look at the foreigners weighing in. November is important. This is gonna be great.

The McCain ads are pure Rovian slime. The Dems are now FOOLISHLY trying the same tactics with the dumbass commercial making fun of McCain for not being able to use a computer. Whenever Democrats IMITATE Republicans, they lose. We were discussing some new or different types of ads the other day. Here's what Obama should do:

Take the McCain adds, and dissect them in their own adds, exposing the lies. ie-show the McCain ad make a claim, freeze frame it, superimpose the truth. Then, at the end of the add, show a picture of Karl Rove, and say "McCain: Same old Bush style smear campaigns. More of the same. Just turn the ad back on them, to PROVE that they are just more of the same. Same policies, same political METHODS.

That would work pretty well with the "Kindergarden sex education" ad. Only classical Rove/Republican style smear campaigns could turn a piece of legislation designed to protect kids from sexual predators into a smear claiming it was intended to teach kids how to have sex. ONLY ROVE or his PRODIGIES would or could SINK THAT LOW.

Anthony Look's picture

While Republicans are busy with voter suppressing, voter machine hacking, generally lying, and most importantly rallying around vacuous issues; Democrats miss campaigning a narrative about the democrats themselves. The people that have lost jobs, the REAL PTA (non lying) mothers that have noticed the pace of inflation especially at the grocery counter. The worker in all of us that feels angry and STUNNED by the price of gas especially aware of the enormous oil company profits (and yet they want MORE, off shore drilling). The impact on the families, among millions of nightmarish mortgage scenarios. The campaign should STAND UP PROUD AND LOUD and remind everyone about the surge; how's its success is SOLEY due to the Democrats demanding the dismantling of the "blank check" Bush/Rumsfeld war policies and failures. Our intervention not only cause Rumsfeld to resign but it changed the course of this war. It is now common place to read about time lines as we predicted. This campaign is about a war that to date if we ask, are we better off than we were 8 yrs ago before this administration, the answer is a resounding NO, by a majority of Americans. We are not only not better off, but the rest of the world is also not better off and they know it. Obama's campaign should be about the PEOPLE that has catapult him to this position of trust. Obama's campaign should show the Democratic Vets who have suffered the from a multitude of issues such as stop loss, being under manned and equipped, to medical care discrepancies (Walter Reed is not only a middle school), and most notably a national disgrace of veteran suicides. Obama's campaign should be rallying vet groups to promise no soldier will be treated with the disregard this administration has afforded vets; an administration which lies with words and is exposed with deeds (as is McCain) on vet issues. Obama's campaign needs to demonstrate that despite the job losses, food cost, gas gouging, mortgage realities, and the many multi level issues that envelope us; we are foremost Americans and we believe WE CAN DO BETTER.
The Obama campaign (with Valerie Plame at his side) should patriotically declare that his administration will never expose an agent of the United States for political reasons. The Obama campaign should declare the McCain/Bush "Apocalypse Now" version of American, can not only not continue;IT WILL NOT STAND, ENOUGH!
(the horror,the horror).

For all the complaints about the media -- which are valid, and I in no way belittle them -- McCain seems to have crossed some sort of line. A lot of the press is pointing out that he's lying, even sections of the press we might not expect. It's at least a step toward objectivity.

As for our befuddlement about people's willingness to vote for McCain/Palin, we have to remember the absurd political party duopoly here. It's not just symptom of our archaic electoral system. It's become part of our culture.

Imagine that the Democrats nominated someone completely unpalatable. Stupid, untrustworthy, etc. Loyal Democrats might ponder just how much would it take to vote for a largely palatable Republican. I admit that my rational side would have a tough fight with my emotional one. After what I've experienced under the Republican brand, my opposition to it has become part of my identity.

Despite the mess we are in, and the 80% of people who acknowledge that the Republicans have caused it, there are Republicans just yearning for a reason to trust McCain and distrust Obama -- a rationalization that will make it easier for them to vote. Because McCain has now essentially branded himself as someone untrustworthy, and his lies are getting press, Obama has a golden opportunity to insist that McCain cannot be trusted. He needs to make it emotionally easier for some of those Republicans to vote for him. He has to connect to them with his rhetoric. He needs an ethos that makes him feel palatable.

Fortunately, I think Obama is exactly the candidate who can do this. Gore proved unable. Kerry proved unable. Obama can do it.

It will depend on how he responds. It must be forceful and funny, but most of all, comforting. He needs to reach out to those people who yearn for a reason to vote with their long-held political identity, and make them trust him. They already are wary of John McCain.

CantankerousDave's picture

This crap is quite literally out of the Republican handbook. By which I mean 1984. Remember in the old days, when accusing somebody of this was always an exagguration?

Blackwhite is defined as follows:

“ ...this word has two mutually contradictory meanings. Applied to an opponent, it means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts. Applied to a Party member, it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know that white is black, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary. This demands a continuous alteration of the past, made possible by the system of thought which really embraces all the rest, and which is known in Newspeak as doublethink. "

And let's not forget about Duckspeak, meaning regurgitating slogans without expending any rational thought on it, because to do so would risk Thoughtcrime. The following is straight out of the White House press room:

"An example of a skillful duckspeaker in action is provided in the beginning of chapter 9, where an Inner Party speaker is haranguing the crowd about the crimes of Eurasia when a note is passed into his hand – whereupon he continues the speech with nothing changed in his voice or manner, but according to the changed party line he now condemns the crimes of Eastasia, which is Oceania's new enemy."

Or, "We have never claimed that Iraq was behind 9/11. We have never said that bin Laden was the mastermind behind it. all those videotapes are clearly lying. Why do you hate America?"

Palin never in Iraq, campaign now says

(CNN) -- Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican vice presidential nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor's foreign travel.
..
In addition, campaign aides also confirmed reports to CNN Saturday that Palin's time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a refueling stop.

There goes one third of her Foreign Policy experience: Canada, Mexico, Germany, Kuwait, Iraq, Ireland ..

Unless she gets credit for living close to Russia ..

But she's qualified!
She's actually got the beginning of Cheney's snarly lip going in this pic, only it's her right lip.

I agree with your assessment. We should not be imitating them. We can't do Rovian politics successfully. We can't connect with it. It only appeals to a certain kind of person, and that person isn't voting Democratic anyway. When we do it, we only look like posers. Moreover, it turns off people who do vote Democratic.

Obama has a rare charisma in politics. Rightly or wrongly it has gotten him this far. He needs to build on it, and get enough people to trust him.

I have given McCain the benefit of the doubt.....Rove is in charge of the campaign and McCain has absolutely no idea what is going on. But he appears at the end of every one of those obnoxious ads and says "I approve of this ad" and by God he better know what he is approving.

While we are all being distracted by these ads and the trivial crap coming from the McCain campaign, the Republicans are quietly finishing plans to once again steal the election. Read about their dirty tricks regarding college students being told they cannot vote where they live; non-official absentee ballots being sent out; and numerous other tricks to keep Democrats from voting or their votes from counting. Obama's campaign should be very vigilent in watching what is going on and don't waste their time responding to the Republican's childish complaints about ads, etc.

Do Nothing Because They Both Do It

What a defense. This kind of fact checking seems to have Rovian origins. It sure assures nothing official will be done to John McCain for all out lying about Obama. You can take what Chris Matthews did to summarize things up as support for his conservative buddies. Matthews knows what he did will do more to make McCain and Obama look the same, hence it is okay. Bastard.

Also, McCain says in his ad "as Obama comes down in the polls, he will do more of the same." Does McCain know something we should know about theses conservative polls? Since their convention, the Republicans seem to own the boards. Rasmussen polls have dominated every poll in many states. I wonder how big Rasmussen is. Or maybe they just have heavily leaded pencils? Whatever the case, they have been very busy. Actually, if you look closely at the origins of many resent polls, they clearly release in favor of conservative candidates.

I am not buying it. I have scene the many stupid mistakes McCain makes on a daily bases. Mistakes that would end Obama's chances to be president. It is almost like McCain is made of Teflon. In 2000, the polls showed Bush leading up to the end of the campaign. It was suppose to be a "done" deal before voting started. It was much closer then the polls had it. I have a feeling from here on we will see McCain leading Obama in many conservative polls. The University of Cincinnati Poll does not have a bit of history in any polls for this year. Yet, it gave McCain a 4 point lead that the pollsters used to justify giving him Ohio.

I am not giving up. However, I am truly sadden and less hopeful this country will seat a Black candidate in the office of president.

Good point. As you noted, Barack Obama's strength is his speaking ability. By focusing solely on these attacks by John McCain, his primary weapon has been silenced. Never heard that one yet, do you mean Bush?

No. I mean one of the few votes that Obama actually cast in the Senate. He voted NO when the bill was put before the Senate to give life saving measures to a baby who was aborted, but survived the abortion. I'm surprised you don't know, seeing that you are in favor of saving the lives of the defenseless.

We'd be happy to trade a couple dozen container ships full of them for, say, a couple of good bottles of wine and a good cigar. We'll even pay for the shipping.

I really only care about the wildlife, there are enough pro-lifers out there, and if the baby was to be aborted, that is what it was supposed to be so I agree with it, now that I know. I am pro-choice! I think I accidently said pro-life in the last one.

The below quote shows the McCain campaign acutely understands and is clearly taking advantage of the complete failure of the MSM:

(From the NYT)

A McCain spokesman, Brian Rogers, said the campaign had evidence for all its claims. “We stand fully by everything that’s in our ads,” Mr. Rogers said, “and everything that we’ve been saying we provide detailed backup for — everything. And if you and the Obama campaign want to disagree, that’s your call.”

Thanks MSM!

Of all the problems in America, the failure of the Media is the worst. Our 'Founding Fathers' anticipated all manner of failure of the gov't apparatus and to count them they ensured the freedom of the press. That the MSM still holds itself in such high regard in the face of the COMPLETE failure of the task their existence was protected to ensure is just disgusting.

When people talk about 'freedom of the press' I just laugh.

Maxine go google yourself - it takes just a few minutes to do some fact checking. Obama did not want to kill babies that survive abortion- its so stupid it is absurd. WHo in their right mind would support such a position. Law already existed to protect such a baby....Illinois law already provided that physicians must protect the life of a fetus when there is "a reasonable likelihood of sustained survival of the fetus outside the womb, with or without artificial support"

Maxine engage your rational mind - if something sounds really stupid then it probably is stupid- but if you are not sure open a new browser and go google~ you might educate yourself

Hypocrisy, thy name is John McCain.

P.S. For those of you who thinks Obama isn't doing enough, remember, this is a guy who no one believe at the start of the primaries would beat Clinton. He did and with grace. That is why I am not worrying myself into a grave.

People like Maxine have no logic, they only regurgitate the latest repugnicons smears and distortions. If she had any logic ,she wouldn't be on the wrong side of the issues.

Choosing Palin was an act of desperation on McCain's part and now with all that is coming forth the Bounce he got from that pick will shortly become a Lead weight dragging him down into the gutter.

As a Life Long Republican I am so sick of my own Party and that of the Dem's as well.

I will be voting for Obama and stopped giving to McCain Long ago he is undeserving of the Money or the Nomination and will further drag our nation into the gutter.

I sure hope the American public will awaken from its sleep and force change in Washington by Voting all the Bums out, force term limits upon the congress and end this two party bickering which is only causing America to faultier world wide and this quagmire we have caused can be repaired but it will take all Americans standing up saying that we have had enough of Washington and demand change to force the cronies out of power and bring forth real change for America.

We can only hope such would happen but unfortunately in my View Americans are to self centered to do the right thing and to concerned with whats in it for them personally than they are for whats right for America...........

McCain never lies? He says Obama will raise taxes, but what Obama has been saying over and over is that he will not raise taxes on middle income people but he will on the rich.
There is something very wrong with these polls. From the very beginning, Obama has gotten record crowds of people coming to see and hear him. No bump in the polls. He went overseas and looked and acted very presidential and no bump.He has given intelligent and interesting speeches. No bump.McCain was so disliked by his own party that they were told to vote for Hillary.
The polls do say that Joe Biden is much more qualified than Palin and that Palin could become president soon. Still no bump. That scares the hell out of me.The "in the dark" Palin doesn't sound to me like she's qualified.
Why were we so anxious to impeach Bush? McCain brags that he voted with Bush 90% of the time. You liked the last 8 years? The Democrats have the best candidates in years. Something is wrong. I think we again are about to have an election stolen from us!!!

idealistic in NM's picture

Hmm. I still think it's going to be a landslide for Obama/ Biden in Nov. It won't even be close. The Rethuglicans can only steal the election if it's close.

McCain's campaign's lies, like a slow-moving hurricane, have hit the mainstream press. At this moment, the eye of the hurricane is over us. It's the weekend, Ike's got a lot of (deserved) attention, and there's a bit of lull before the news cycle swings back into full gear tomorrow. By then, this messy McCain campaign hurricane will shift, and the media will get hit with its more destructive outer bands. Lies are highly emotional, something even Joe Average Voter can understand, and this will be the end for the StraightJacketTalk Express.

Bob, agree with you all the way.

Just want to add from my experience that the simple reason this election is this close is that compared to the rest of the world here in the USA we have a larger proportion of hero-worshipers, who are wither stupid and idiotic, or just plain biased due to obvious reasons, which are irrational to sensible minds. Top of the rank among those obvious reasons is racism, still very much prevalent in this country, and the next to the top is hatred of the rest of the world that is non-Christian (even though Jesus Christ himself would have scoffed and beaten up at these people just as he did when he evicted the evil doers from the temple). Just as Bob has mentioned, I do believe that Sen. Obama should win this election, even though the margin may be slim.

My hope is based on the millions of young Americans who are inspired beyond imagination by Sen. Obama, and the other millions of old people like me who are in their 60’s and 70’s, who are also equally excited from the memories of the Kennedy Era. Sen. Obama has truly brought back the excitement and memories of JFK, RFK and MLK. I was a teen-ager during when these great Americans excited Americans young and old, and I can still feel that excitement, I am re-living that excitement now.

The only reason this election is this close, even with a republican candidate who is way out of our times, and who, and whose surrogates, shamelessly bask on his age-old experience in a Vietnamese prison cell (almost 75% of the RNC speech was focused on this theme only!!), and who believes that his POW status entitles him to be the US President, and with a VP nomination that should insult any sensible American, is that Sen. Obama has an African father. I am saying this because I lived through the electrifying excitements generated by RFK, and that Sen. Obama has equaled or exceeded that excitement among the young and the old who in this country and around the world.

Sam's picture

Let's be careful here. Politifact.com and factcheck.org have plenty of questionable Obama claims on there.

Seems McCain and Palin have many more, but this Obama campaign needs to start answering the questions more directly, clean up the bullshit, and start a long streak of stating facts that are 100% testable and in specific context.

There cannot be any question of Obama's tactics. His managers and strategists must make better decisions and get to the truths. Not half-truths, not barely truths, not a little bit of truth.

State the truth is its full and unglossed context, even if it takes more money and longer ads.
