Gallup Daily:

The Sept. 14-16 Gallup Poll Daily tracking update shows Barack Obama regaining a slight, although not statistically significant, edge over John McCain, 47% to 45%, among registered voters, marking the first time since the week of the Republican National Convention that McCain has not held at least a one percentage point margin over Obama..

It's sad that the stock market has to plunge with Wall Street burning before people start realizing that conservatism is bad for their health. And McCain's way of dealing with this is infantile. (via Digby)

All the Polls that completed last week before the announcement of Lehman's bankruptcy had McPain tie or winning over Obama by a +3 to +4 point spread, save one poll that closed on Saturday the 13th when rumors began to spread.

The polls that were still in progress after the announcement of Lehman's failure show Obama winning by a +2 to +5 spread with the one exception of Rassmussen that gives McPain a +1 lead.

Pollsters have reported that it will take a week yet for the full impact of the financial meltdown to show in the polls, but there are some poll reports coming in that show Obama pulling ahead of McPain or to a tie in the swing states of Ohio, Virginia, Florida, Minnesota, and Colorado.

It's still so close that the Republicans could steal it again. That's all they want: for it to remain close enough to steal without it being obvious. They're already engaging in data-mining and vote-caging to block likely Democrat voters. There's probably already an army of volunteer right-wing precinct workers who'll intimidate and attempt to misinform people at the polls (happened to me), not to mention the brownshirts that'll be there challenging and threatening minority voters. But Americans haven't been interested enough in all this to do anything about it these past eight years.

Election Protection

by digby

With the election looking like it's going to be fairly close, keeping track of Republican vote suppression efforts is going to be more important then ever.

Election Protection has a great web site devoted to doing just that. All of us should familiarize ourselves with these processes and issues, but especially those of us who live in swing states or any place where a close race is possible.

This could be important. I saw today that in one poll, Florida(!)is tied. Chads, chads, chads ...

Bottom line: stop worrying that Obama's lead is so small. The polls are completely worthless anyway.

Well, former L.A. mayor Richard Riordan, a rich Repub, has endorsed Obama.

Then the king of bad hair days, Donald Trump, comes out for McCain. He said he'd been a Hillary backer.

Another Hillary supporter and putative Dem, a rich bitch with the venerable last name of Rothschild, comes out for McCain, too. Campbell Brown was making her sweat trying to explain her cognitive dissonance.

Some rich folks get it. Others, like The Donald and that silver-spoon, blueblooded crone, do not.

What a couple of asses. Going from Hillary to McCain? It just doesn't compute.

My dad was the same way. He believed what he heard on the TV news when Rather, Cronkite, etc gave it to people pretty much straight. As he grew older and comfortable, he "assumed" that the TV was still his friend, his supplier of news, his supplier of "truth." He didn't keep up on shit like the rollback of the Fairness Doctrine, etc. By that time, he was wowed by all the new channels, satellite, etc. So what if Cronkite was gone--he had Wolfie AND Fux. The transformation was complete.

I believe that many in my parents' generation have had similar experiences. Hard to turn back the clock for them.

The latest is called the "swaps game"

Worst Crisis Since '30s, With No End Yet in Sight

Excerpt:

Swaps Game

The latest trouble spot is an area called credit-default swaps, which are private contracts that let firms trade bets on whether a borrower is going to default. When a default occurs, one party pays off the other. The value of the swaps rise and fall as market reassesses the risk that a company won't be able to honor its obligations. Firms use these instruments both as insurance -- to hedge their exposures to risk -- and to wager on the health of other companies. There are now credit-default swaps on more than $62 trillion in debt, up from about $144 billion a decade ago.

One of the big new players in the swaps game was AIG, the world's largest insurer and a major seller of credit-default swaps to financial institutions and companies. When the credit markets were booming, many firms bought these instruments from AIG, believing the insurance giant's strong credit ratings and large balance sheet could provide a shield against bond and loan defaults. AIG believed the risk of default was low on many securities it insured.

As of June 30, an AIG unit had written credit-default swaps on more than $446 billion in credit assets, including mortgage securities, corporate loans and complex structured products. Last year, when rising subprime-mortgage delinquencies damaged the value of many securities AIG had insured, the firm was forced to book large write-downs on its derivative positions. That spooked investors, who reacted by dumping its shares, making it harder for AIG to raise the capital it increasingly needed.

Credit default swaps "didn't cause the problem, but they certainly exacerbated the financial crisis," says Leslie Rahl, president of Capital Market Risk Advisors, a consulting firm in New York. The sheer volumes of outstanding CDS contracts -- and the fact that they trade directly between institutions, without centralized clearing -- intertwined the fates of many large banks and brokerages.

Few financial crises have been sorted out in modern times without massive government intervention. Increasingly, officials are coming to the conclusion that even more might be needed. A big problem: The Fed can and has provided short-term money to sound, but struggling, institutions that are out of favor. It can, and has, reduced the interest rates it influences to attempt to reduce borrowing costs through the economy and encourage investment and spending.

But it is ill-equipped to provide the capital that financial institutions now desperately need to shore up their finances and expand lending.

http://finance.yahoo.com/banking-budgeting/article/105785/Worst-Crisis-S...

First they are taking bets that companies will default??? WTF??? And now when the bets go wrong they come to Uncle Sugar to bail them out with our tax dollars???

Wallstreet is the biggest high stakes crap game in the world... and this time a whole lot of people bet wrong!

Good idea... I checked the 10K reports and profit statements of Wells Fargo and they are clean and didn't get into the subprime stuff. They also reported a healthy profit statement.

In Canada it is Toronto Dominion... their CEO initially got panned for not "getting in" to the subprime stuff, now he is one of their only banks that is again reporting healthy profits.

Don't take my word for it though... pull a 10K report on them.

The ONLY poll that matters is the one on November 11, 2008.

Why the hell isn't it a 20 point lead by now?

man.... big difference between obama and mccain doing
speeches. mccain looks down at his cards more than
50% of the time.

Because polls are complete nonsense. They are utterly unscientific, and, in this specific case, they are being produced by people who have an interest in keeping the horse race narrative going.

Professor Roubini has for a very long time maintained that it is going to be a hard L... deeper and nastier than anything that we have seen since the Great Depression and so far he has been right.

More bank runs coming... Mutual Funds unable to maintain the dollar in dollar out sacred trust... FDIC unable to cover the losses... all holy hell is about to break lose and we haven't seen the really bad stuff yet according to him!

I am pulling most of our money out of Washington Mutual in the morning.

wells fargo......a choice to consider

I see we have been doing the same home work. The question I have is Bank of America... they keep sucking up bad debt like it is worth something. Everyone says they are too big to fail, but they said the same kind of crap about Lehman's, AIG, and the rest of them.

everybody is looking for bottom in this market. they're
thinking a U or V curve off the bottom. people often
forget we could be looking at a L shape bottom. meaning
we could find the 'bottom' and stay along the bottom.they
want us to spend money in a bad way. the problem is people
don't have disposable income and they're in debt.

naked short sellers were killing morgan stanley today. i think
wells fargo is going to get wamu for what seems to be pennies.

I don't think Wells Fargo can do it. They're in too much trouble of their own. Business Investors Daily today said it would be J. P. Morgan. That might not be such a bad thing for WaMu, which has seen its stock drop 26%, I believe, in the last couple of days.

(If I'm wrong about that figure, what I really meant to say was that Alaska produces 20% of the total energy in the United States. In gas and oil, I mean. I think. No, wait, I mean only in oil. Want to see me dressed up like a moose?)

I stand corrected...but I will look. Thanks.
