The Keating Five Scandal in 97 Seconds
By SilentPatriot Wednesday Sep 24, 2008 9:00am
I'll admit that although I'm a poltical news junkie, I never really understood the Keating Five scandal as well as I should have. Jed's newest video fixed all that, summing up in less than two minutes the scandal and John McCain's central role in it. The Obama campaign needs to start hitting McCain on this.

Let Nader Debate!
Thanks for helping to bring clarity this complex issue Silentpatriot.
Now, can you please explain the Jackson 5?
DOH!!!!! Back when people went to jail, sigh..... I remember those times.
I don't think there could possibly be a better time for Obama, or simply the news media to bring this up.
How exactly was this resolved? Did the Feds bail 'em out after all? And if so, what was the deal and/or results of doing so?
Funny but not in a good way, the atmosphere then when this happened and the atmosphere as of late. I think McCain just got lucky back then when all he got was a slap on the wrist.
An ad was aired here today, not by the Obama campaign, about McCain and his bouts with skin cancer. It was a little too graphic and at the end it demanded McCain turn over all his medical records. I'm all for airing all McCain's dirty laundry, but this ad would make any rational person cringe.
# 3
Is McCain giving away points for trying to inject Trator Nader into this election? Without Nader Bush NEVER wins 2000, I will never forgive or forget Mr "things gotta get worse" Nader.
Many Dermotologists say that based on what they do know about McnSanes cancer is that usually people his age with that condition are given 2-4 years to live. It's malignant, it's aggressive, he's going to look like Two-Face in Batman by the end of his first term if he even survives, yah yah his mom is ninety something, but SHE doesn't have aggressive malignant skin cancer.
AnotherJohn @ 6:
Keating got 5 years. The bailout was 300 billion. I think Both McCain and Glenn were sanctioned by the senate.
The other 3 senators didn't run again.
Mike@5 Smoke a reefer in public and see how fast you get an orange suit.
Of course, THOSE PEOPLE are a menace to our way of life.
I don't know about this. In this bizarro universe we seem to be living in, bringing attention to this will somehow turn it into a story about how four evil Democratic Senators led White Knight McCain to the Dark Side but he somehow went on to find the moral courage and fortitude to lead himself back onto the One True Path of Righteousness.
That "other" thief Keating, took the fall for you Grandpa.....and what do you say concerning honor?
Look, it is not dirty politics to hit on this. It is politics.
One of the reasons Ted Kennedy was never elected POTUS was the Mary Jo Kopeckne scandal. Kerry's flaws were contrived; Bush's were ignored and look where we are now.
Who else was involved in the S & L scandals? How about Neil Bush: Silverado S&L in Colorado, Jeb Bush: Broward S & L. They are all thieves. Look at the timeline. Who was President at the time? Poppy Bush. Amazing.
We need to nail Mc Cain long and hard on this. Bury him with his past deeds.
*[Breaking News]*
Debate Had Economic Questions - Campaigns Knew That Last Week !!
Further evidence that this is all just a political stunt by McCain:
Last week!!!
McCain knew last week that the first debate would give the candidates a chance to discuss the economic situation on national t.v. with a huge audience.
He doesn't want that. He prefers the drama.
McCain's erratic behavior gets more disturbing by the hour.
Mick@11
Not in Oregon, we at least have decriminalized posession of personal amounts.
But that's just us, In Oregon we led the way in Public beaches, bottle returns, right to die, medical marijuana and decriminalized marijuana. So this means busted with joint = ticket not jail or prison. We also have some of the best public transportation in the country, libraries that actually are open more than 3 days a week and a urban growth boundry to limit suburban sprawl. Portland is consistantly rated one of the best places to live in America, why? Because we care about things we all share, not just ourselves. Does it cost money? You bet it does, library bonds aren't free and public transportation costs, but IMHO it is well worth it.
Cobsjo @ 15:
McCain got scared of the questions and cut and ran from the debate.
I've pulled funnier things out of my ass than what's on Snorg t-shirts.
fuggettaboutit!! Bill Clinton said mcantics was acting "in good faith" by going to washington to avoid the debate. thank god bill is on our side.
"Cindy McCain had a major stake in one of his real estate holdings".
I looked it up. It was less than $500K...more like $362K. That's peanuts for someone with that much wealth. It's a huge judgment issue when, rather than risk a small fraction of your fortune, you become corrupt.
Surprisingly enough people will focus on the Rezco/Obama relationship.
McCorrupt is on his way to the dustbin of history.
"The Obama campaign needs to start hitting McCain on this."
At this rate, all Obama has to do is show up and campaign. Apparently, McCain can't handle more than two things. I guess it's cutting into his naptime and weekends.
The problem with saying because of the conservative led economic breakdown, now is not the time for foreign policy debates is manifold. The economy and foreign policy has been tied since the first trade routes, colonizations and imperialism, and yes, even the slave trade.
Now with internationalism, multinationalism, economic regionalism, shared currencies, foreign countries underwriting our debts, two wars draining us, former allies who won't help us, out-sourching, off-shore accounts and moving headquarters to other countries like Halliburton to Dubai, the demarcation between the two policies has all but been obliterated.
But then I'm an oblithering idiot.
out-sourcing.
AliceX@3 The system is set up to enable the status quo to keep people like Nader out of the running.
Nader or Kucinich (my homey) would attempt to change the so-called "free trade" into fair trade.
Exxon, Carlyle Group and GM et al would be unable to compete on a level playing field.
I would love to write in "Dennis Kucinich" on the ballot.
But I feel that it is my duty to protect the SCOTUS from another fascist appointee.
Obama is the best hope for this.
First stop the bleeding, then cure the patient.
And so I reluctantly say: GOBAMA!
Who knows? Maybe he could rise to the occasion.
I would sincerely love to see an African-American set the rest of us free!
Cobsjo @ 15:
No shit! McCain is desperate and hopefully this last stunt will backfire on him. His nerves should be raw by tomorrow night. Pressure plus raw nerves plus Palin's lame answers to questions could be seriously eating at him. Could get very very interesting during the debate...if he shows at al.

Mike@16 Sounds like almost heaven, you lucky dog! If I were in any position to do so I would move there today.
Expecting John McKeating to give oversight to the financial industry and Wall Street is like expecting a CEO of a major tobacco company to head an anti-smoking campaign.
StirFry @ 22:
And now that it appears there has been a rapture and Sarah Palin has been called home since she's no where to be found, he's on his own his on.
rick street @ 19:
I just cannot figure Bill Clinton out these days. I used to admire the hell out of the man and listen to his every word as though it were gospel. But lately, he seems more absorbed with the Palin family than he is with his own party's candidate. He just can't seem to bring himself to say something sincerely good about Obama. He goes through the motions but anyone can tell he isn't feeling what he's saying.
Ruthless People @ 30:
She's in NYC today. She attended Clinton's Global Initiative meeting and later she will be going to "pay her respects" at ground zero. I wouldn't expect any question and answer time with her though.
Its really strange that Obama has not used this as part of his talking points. People need to know that McSame has a track record which means he has a problem with judgement. Sure he got a slap on the wrist but its interesting who was involved with the failed S & L's. Looks like the Bush family is in the midst of this with Dub trying to sell us another bill of goods with this bailout plan. They need to make sure that there will no way that this lame duck president is going to go out with fat pockets with this bill. He has increased the deficit to an all time high and committed impeachable acts. The last we need is to be on the hook for all of this bad debt without a fail safe system as a backup so that taxpayers don't get taken once again.. McSame needs to be exposed with this information so that voters can make a clear choice.
Since McCain was deeply involved in saving Keating using the $500 Billion bailout then whom is he now with his Republican cohorts attempting to save with the new bailout of $700 Billion? Just wondering is all. Just connecting dots. Could be wrong on this. :)
More evidence that mcsame is a lying no good criminal!
rick street @ 19:
At this point, fuck the Clintons! I'm truly tired of their half-hearted (at best) support for Obama.
(There, I feel better...)
With all the truth coming out....
Looks like McCain is trying to bailout his failing "running on empty" campaign.
In other news..
Songwriter Jackson Browne is suing the John McCain campaign for the illegal use of his "Running on Empty." McCain placed the song as background in an attack ad..
Jackson Browne, who was in New York yesterday also nailed the nuclear power industry on the Colbert Show Tuesday, September 23

McCain added another meaning to "bailout" when he tried to bail out of the tomorrow night's debate.

Mike @ 8:
It is so easy to blame it on Nader, ain't it?
Great. McCain's ethics violation for two contacts? What about the nearly 20 troopergate contacts by Palin? Is that HER darkest hour? Let's ask her...oh wait, we can't.
THAT's OLD CRIME. HOW ABOUT CURRENT CRIME:
I have seen the FBI raid the suspects homes, businesses, and those of relatives and associates, seize ALL computers and paper records in order to find evidence to support penny ante criminal investigations.
WHY HAVEN'T POLICE AND F.B.I. SEIZED THE COMPUTERS AND RECORDS OF THE CROOKS ON WALL STREET?
Do we have a double standard?
Or are we giving the crooks time to destroy the evidence?
pissed off patricia @ 32:

We should keep tabs of all this non-campaigning.
Wow - Andrea Mitchell looks so different!! Was that her reporting at about the 30-second mark?
pissed off patricia @ 31:
Some of us who were paying attention, figured long time ago... that if you really analyze Clinton's track record you will see that most of his policies were to the right of Nixon's. If you were to tell me which major liberal legislations did Clinton help to pass, I am sure we would be able to count them with the fingers of one hand.
A lot of the troubles we are going through right now are directly linked to some of his policies. The fact that he is more concerned about what the t-time for his next golf game with poppy Bush is going to be, than to actually help the Dems gives you a clue about where his priorities reside.
Besides, he is married to a former Goldwater Girl, who presided over her Alma Mater's College Republicans chapter, who sat on the board of the world's biggest union busting organization: Walmart, and who loves to pretend to be a radical liberal populist. So "acting" seems to be second nature to these people.
And now that Obama is pushing the meme of the bailout, it is clear to me that we are fucked. And anyone who brings Nader, who after all was fucking right; in the end there really is *that* little of a difference between the Dems and the GOP, should just shut the hell up. I will have to place a set of industrial grade pliers on my nose when I have to vote this November for Obama just to keep the putrid stench of the choice from making me lose my lunch.
This country is done, period...
You'd think McCain's previous actions during a $500 billion financial crisis would be relevant to our current $700 billion financial crisis. Why the hell have none of the news media brought up the Keating scandal? Why the hell hasn't the Obama campaign decided to take this golden opportunity to remind the voting public of John McCain's track record in just such an "economic crisis"?!
"The appearance of impropriety?" Um, no. That was plain and simple political corruption. Added to that was the fifteen thousand dollars that Senator John McCain accepted from Keating in vacation trips to the beautiful, sunny Bahamas. That, my friends, was a bribe, and McCain's direct intervention with a regulatory agency was the service he performed in return for the bribe.
Pretending that he is for "reform" (does today's Congress seem more honest to you?) is nothing more than a smokescreen to hide John McCain's continued use of his office to help his corrupt pals in business.
John McCain kept his senate seat only because the senate ethics committee was as corrupt as he was. That trend has continued right up to today. The US Senate is a millionaire's club stocked with a bunch of self-serving crooks. John McCain is one of the worst of a bad bunch.
I'm John McCain and I approve my meltdown
StirFry @ 47:
They lied? You know not! That's not the Chreestian thing to do!
pissed off patricia @ 38:
I'll admit, I haven't been following all their campaign stops but it sure seems that when Bill, in particular, gets a high-profile gig--Stewart, etc.--his support for Obama has to be pulled out of him carefully, like a puppy that swallowed a length of string.
At least the Rethugs join in solidarity behind their candidate, in front of cameras anyway.
An Average Joe @ 14:
Here's a pretty interesting twist on current events.
Remember the not so long ago Gov. Eliot Spitzer scandal?
Check out the article The Washington Post published by Spitzer right before the Feds started the sting against him:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/13/AR200802...
I seriously doubt Eliot Spitzer was doing anything all the other politicians weren't doing themselves (the hanky-panky "Spank me baby!" hoo-hah). I think the Feds and the Big Banker Boyz got pissed at this article and let him have it.
Mike @ 8:
Spoken like a true Democrat!
pissed off patricia @ 38:
Speaking of "enthusiastic support for Obama" I loved this article from today about Bill Clinton stating he won't start campaigning for Obama until the Jewish holidays are over! What's next for a delay in game? Halloween?? Boo!:

The best overview of the Keating 5 was written by the Arizona Republic.
Great work. Turn this into a commercial (a little long) and air in all of the swing states!
"On judgement, ethics and truthfulness he failed this test as badly as anyone can fail"
Remind you of anyone? He wears the moniker 'McBush' well. So all you folks who think Granpa deserves your vote...maybe you should think about this.

It sure is Occams razor and all that. Go ahead, look it up I'll wait. Sometimes things happen because other things happen. If someone ran a red light and hit you killing someone in your family who would you blame it on? The make of the car? The gas station that sold him gas? Well Nader was reckless and sabotaged the election, why do you think the Repubs strove so hard to get him on the ballot in 2004? Not because they like his policies, I'm just calling a duck a duck, it's water under the bridge, but that doesn't mean I have to like or respect Traitor Nader, If a Dem said I want the country to get worse so I can be elected he'd be burned in effigy Nader said that he said the reason he wanted Bush elected was he thought that after Bush fucked everything up, then the green party would make gains politically. He's a traitor for wanting harm to come America. They don't make the Pinto anymore or the Corvair, Nader can crawl under a rock and die IMHO.
Alice X - (Click Here for Nader Debate What If) - status quObama - change you can pretend in - @ 57:
And you are ignorant just like a Green, oh wait that's right you aren't a Green you are a Republican trolling, don't let the door hit you on the way out asshole.
For those of you that think that The Dems = Repubs just vote McCain already. Clinton compromised, he had a hostile Republican Congress trying to take him down for 8 years and the President doesn't make legislation. He tried to stop some of the more egregious Republican crappola, but when you tuck things into every bill eventually you have to make hard choices. The perfect President doesn't exist, compromise has to happen, you know someone is doing a good job when both parties are unsatisfied. Compromise, look it up it's not a dirty word but by definition it means no one gets 100% their way.
Scandal is no where in this election Keating is the past and the MSM doesn't give a flying fuck.
Mike @ 68:
Wow, how "democratic" of you.
Shouldn't you be practicing with your local brown shirt chapter? I hear this year, you guys may have a good chance at snatching the goose stepping trophy from the black shirts! Atta boys!
My friends, we live in the Matrix - and nothing is as it seems.
There's a reason this site is called "Crooks and Liars!"
In its final report (November 20, 1991), here is what the Senate Select Committee on Ethics concluded about McCain's conduct:
"…[F]rom 1984 to 1987, Senator McCain took actions on Mr. Keating's behalf or at his request. The Committee finds that Senator McCain had a basis for each of these actions independent of the contributions and benefits he received from Mr. Keating, his associates and friends.
"Based on the evidence available to it, the Committee has given consideration to Senator McCain's actions on behalf of Lincoln. The Committee concludes that, given the personal benefits and campaign contributions he had received from Mr. Keating, Senator McCain exercised poor judgment in intervening with the regulators without first inquiring as to the Bank Board's position in the case in a more routine manner. The Committee concludes that Senator McCain's actions were not improper nor attended with gross negligence and did not reach the level of requiring institutional action against him. The Committee finds that Senator McCain took no further action after the April 9, 1987 meeting when he learned of a criminal referral.
"The Committee reaffirms its prior decision that it does not have jurisdiction to determine the issues of disclosure or reimbursement pertaining to flights provided by American Continental Corporation while Senator McCain was a Member of the House of Representatives. The Committee did consider the effect of such on his state of mind and judgment in taking steps to assist Lincoln.
"Senator McCain has violated no law of the United States or specific Rule of the United States Senate; therefore, the Committee concludes that no further action is warranted with respect to Senator McCain on the matters investigated during the preliminary inquiry."
Now let us talk about domestic terrorists Willaim Ayers and Bernadette Dorn, and the patriot Rev Wright, shall we?
Do a search on Wikipedia for "keating 5". There's an excellent wrapup of what happened. McCain dodged the bullet but his behavior is despicable. He let his friend Charles Keating ripoff 20,000 savers of their life savings and warned no one!!! Thats the character of Grandpa McCain. And some people want this animal as their next president???
McBush, once a proven deceitful crook, always a untrustworthy crook. We can't afford another lying, crook in the White House.
This site is absolutely about keeping all of us informed of the uncaring Reslug Crooks and Criminals, Reslug bathroom perverts, and Reslug child predators out there.
McCain was cleared in the Keating 5 scandal, and was the first and most effective witness against Keating in the civil suit.
I've been to left and right blogs, and I have to admit, this is the most vulgar I've seen.
Apparently McCain is a worthy heir to the Bush Cheney Administration.
Sherri@75 Good! I knew we were on the right track.
Sherr@75:
"McCain was cleared in the Keating 5 scandal, and was the first and most effective witness against Keating in the civil suit. I’ve been to left and right blogs, and I have to admit, this is the most vulgar I’ve seen."
Why don't you try to spread your lies where they will lay. Won't happen here! Vulgar is as vulgar does.
Cindy McCain had a big stake in one of the involved real estate developments. A conflict so big you could drive a mack truck through.
He was not cleared. He should have been removed from office but only the idiots in Arizona can do that. He was censured, read that as a slap. He should be hung for all the lying he is doing now but this is not Pakistan!
Those naderites are basically on the same side as most of us with one big difference. They like to hear themselves spout off rather than insuring what they do blare is effective. I still have not heard a cogent argument as to how a third party is going to help get rid of republican rule.
If you want help in that regard and just can't let your self vote republican, than vote for Barr, push Barr, and take your vote away from Palin/McCain.
But don't come here and act like a republican troll, you belittle yourself and for those who feel they have to after you with a little to much enthusiam, you are key in their belittling themselves (not that I adovocate not taking ownership of one's own behaviors.)
serge @ 65:
Couldn't agree more...thought the same thing when I saw this...
[Deleted. Off topic, spamming and suspiciously blog-whoring. Site Monitor]
I say the Obama camp has to bring up the Keating 5 scandal. He has no choice. Even though McCain "suspended" his campaign yesterday, his ads still run undermining his opponent.
So, the gloves are off and the Dems need to fight dirty.
As far as I'm concerned, the time is now. We've got to use every venue we can to keep the Keating 5 scandal in the minds of the voting public since they are disenchanted right now due to the financial crisis.
chicano2nd @ 79:
[*applauds* with a thumbs up]
My point exactly. We're in a crisis right now. We don't need people to derail the goal of trying to get rid of the party in power from the WH by playing off both sides against the middle.
Our country is in dire straits. And it is tiring to hear these self-absorbed folks come on here night after night with the goal of demeaning Obama in subtly racist and derogatory words.
The supporters of Bob Barr are self-explanatory in that regard. But for the Naderites, they have not once accounted for the fact that their candidate has taken money from the GOP. Until I hear one account for this, take them as the trolls they are--supported by the republicans to take votes away from Obama.
The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators, Alan Cranston (D-CA), Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), John Glenn (D-OH), John McCain (R-AZ), and Donald W. Riegle (D-MI), were accused of improperly aiding Charles H. Keating, Jr., chairman of the failed Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of an investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB).
YS@23;
Well, you might be a blithering idiot, I don't know... I don't think you are.. .But either way your post makes sense to me... I get that YS, maybe we're both blithering idiots... JD
"The Obama campaign needs to start hitting McCain on this."
Hopefully someone on a liberal blog will post the FOX and Friends footage from today @ 8:17 am where Air America's Mike Papantonio went up against Michael Reagan.
That moron Steve Doocy was moderating the segment. When Papantonio brought up Keating 5, Doocy and Reagan tried to shut him down. They basically told him to shut up (pipe down & put a cork in it) and talked about how the Keating 5 was old news.
From Doocy's and Reagan's crazed reaction, I'm thinking Papantonio just found the FOX News' and McCain campaign's Achille's heel. I say every Democrat who goes on FOX needs to hammer on McCain and the Keating 5 as it's relevant because of the banking bailout mess. Contrary to what Doocy said most people don't already know all about the Keating scandal.
peaceful easy feeling @ 84:
Which one of the five is now running for president?
John McCain (R-Ariz.)
OT, but what is the name of the newscaster at the beginning of this clip? I used to see him on CNN...
