Speaking of book bans, Here’s Eyewitness Proof That Sarah Palin Never Reads

Hey. I hear NYC mayor Bloomberg is going to waive the two-term limit.
Why doesn't he just change his name and party affiliation and run against the incumbent.
Now that would be refreshing..
Wow, I thought Harry Potter was bad. These people will be driving around in their cars, rallying up their base how these books are evil. Reminds of of Hitler, how about you?
i genuinely love the people of israel. i love the palestinians, too. but i want toi say a few words for the israelis.
no matter what happens, i pray the relations between america and israel remain strong. we've been through a lot together. yes, i'm pissed about the attack on the u.s.s liberty.
but we all mistakes, and one thing many of israel's detractor's may not understand is that there are scumbags in every intelligence agency in the world.
hopefully, we're all getting better.
hopefully, we all achieve world peace. i look forward to one day visiting israel. my cousin, who spent a year or two over there, says it's quite beautiful.
i have very high hopes for the woman about to assume the mantle of leadership...
Why, Oh why, do we give these people anything beyond the oblivion they so obviously deserve?
now, having said all that, here's a tip for my u.s. intelligence buddies:
you want to know how to indentify undercover mossad?
the snazzy dancing shoes.
(for plunger)
These fucking idiots seek to ban a book that teaches not to burn books because characters in the book burn books. In my less noble moments, I entertain the idea that these fucking idiots should be banished from our land.
By the way, just to add to the irony, Ray Bradbury was often frustrated by the common interpretation Fahrenheit 451 as an anti-censorship manifesto. Bradbury's intent was to warn against our excessive television consumption, which steers us away from books and numbs our brains.
The Verms should be banned from the gene pool.

Karen @ 8:
I watched the Fahrenheit 451 1966 movie the other day (more irony?). I thought it weird at the end when Guy Montag (the firefighter) was being chased by the police at the end. It reminded me so much of an Al Cowlings moment and the later police-chase TeeVee shows. Foretelling really…
bullfrog @ 5:
If by this you mean the people of Israel, I'm entirely with you.
Their leadership is another matter altogether ..................
Suggestion: Save the cost of reviewing the complaint and any associated costs and give the silly bastard enough money to move him and his family to a place outside of the U.S. Then he can surely be free to practice his religion without interference.
Karen @ 8:
I'd add that the book also warns about how easily public opinion can be manipulated by a centralized media that works on behalf of the State, rather than questioning and holding accountable the powers that be.
Personally, I find it very difficult to grasp just how people can grow up in a country like ours yet be so uneducated as to not understand the importance of a book like "Fahrenheit 451" and the irony of trying to ban a book that warns against the dangers of banning/burning books, and even uses the Bible as an example.
The debate over the environmental safety of waste disposals continues. States finally get the picture in financing public transportation. It's hard out there for a Criminal Executive Officer. Bush is contributing to 48 new endangered species in Hawaii. Stevens' friend and accomplice throws him under the bus. The U.S. chooses to follow the definition of insanity by allowing the Shi'ia to run
the Sunni militia again. Employers are likely to spy on your internet rants in the future. Early voting proceeds in Ohio.

I really enjoyed the latest Palin thread. That person is an endless source of humor but it occurred to me as I read all the comments about her abysmal ignorance that that may be precisely why she is on the Republican ticket. Even if she didn't bring women to the party she surely would draw the stupid. As Mark Twain remarked in Pudnhead Wilson; "ain't that a big enough majority in any town"
bamboozled @ 14:
Because the paradox of freedom is that, in order to maintain it, people must be force-educated to learn about how freedom works. Freedom is not humankind's natural state, and, once achieved, free people become free to be ignorant. They resist the education needed, deny their children the education needed, and revert back into a more natural state, and demand the outlawing of everything they fear.
I have read the book and also saw the movie. It was very interesting. Kind of scary to think people are trying to ban books. I swear our country seems to be falling more and more like nazi Germany. I remember starting to really enjoy reading when in english class we had an assignment to read the Con Tiki. It was based on a true story. It was very good that I couldn't put the book down. Everyone in the class enjoyed it. Now I read a lot of books.
I love watching whats going on. One day everyone is running for cover the next day everything is rosey.
Some personal observations on the matter
1 Americans have not gotten a real wage increase in years.
2 Most of your manufacturing sector has been shipped off shore
3 People have gone into debt using their homes for lifestyle loans
4 I see your goverment telling everyone things are ok go and spend money you don't have.
5 The price of homes has now collasped and there is an excess of new and older homes out there and it has stalled your economy. People can't afford to buy new homes or exsisting homes so the new home industry and everything it supports has stalled.

From a friend in the biz comes a warning that I recieved from one of my suppliers:
If you use a product that contains powder milk, know that the Chinese have cornered the market on the product. Mac and cheese in a box, you might want to rethink about it. Not trying to be a scare merchant, but I almost shit my pants in the office today when I read the flash warning from a dry goods supplier today about how some products my come into short supply as they look for other suppliers that dont use the powdered milk from China. Cadbury might just be the start and the part that does scare me is that there is no info on where the powdered milk in your food is coming from.

Sarah Palin is the neo-theo-con's dream candidate. The perfect blend of Bush's ineptitude and Cheney's iniquity, she'll do their bidding -- as she might say -- without blinking, and her End Times enthusiasm is genuine, to boot.
Decent Republicans should be absolutely furious with John McCain for nominating this imbecilic beauty queen.
But she does have one talent at which I marvel: She continues to make Katie Couric look like a serious journalist.
Couric: Is it always wise to promote Democracy around the world? After all, Hamas won a democratic election.
Palin: We need to support Israel because the president of Iran is evil.

Karen @ 25:
It's so painful and embarrassing to watch. Yeah, perhaps if she has a mediocre performance at the debate, the republicans and the MSM may declare it a victory. However, all the dumbass crap in between will be on the series of tubes, youtube, MSM, SNL etc. And that won't help McCain's campaign.
Coincidentally, I just started reading Fahrenheit 451 again a few days ago. Timeless book. Notice that he listed "cigarettes" as one of the reasons the book should be banned. I can only imagine some of the other gems.
"undisciplined child"
"denigration of television viewers"
"hates on people who hate books"
You know it's getting bad when the satire writes itself.
bullfrog @ 28:
Huh?
Karen @ 25:
My point exactly. You can see how she would appeal to the mentally handicapped, axon impaired or neuron deficient.
Karen @ 32:
May I also add Whuh! I realize this is an open thread but where the hell did that come from?
Peter G @ 33:
Yep. :(
I suppose we can always hope that this key demographic that Palin brings to the ticket will be just too stupid to find the proper polling station.
Way to make a book more popular than it would have been had they not campaigned to ban it.
It's ironic alright, but a different type of ironic.
Wiggles @ 37:
That's the lesson never learned by pro-censorship fools. Being banned is great PR.
P.D. @ 4:
Speaking of Hitler, this past weekend, Austria (you know, the birth of Nazism) voted into power the hard-fringe-far-right-NeoFascist-party. Nice.
Italy's got a right wing nut job, France voted for the guy who hates immigrants with a vengeance. Yeah. Europe is heading down that slippery slope again and America is not far behind.
Another example why marching in the streets is ineffective when the media is bought and paid for by the elite.

When he faces off against Sarah Palin Thursday night, Joe Biden will have his hands full. I should know. I've debated Governor Palin more than two dozen times.
On April 18, 2006, Palin and I sat together in a hotel coffee shop comparing campaign trail notes. As we talked about the debates, Palin made a comment that highlights the phenomenon that Biden is up against.
"Andrew, I watch you at these debates with no notes, no papers, and yet when asked questions, you spout off facts, figures, and policies, and I'm amazed. But then I look out into the audience and I ask myself, 'Does any of this really matter?' " Palin said.
While policy wonks such as Biden might cringe, it seemed to me that Palin was simply vocalizing her strength without realizing it. During the campaign, Palin's knowledge on public policy issues never matured – because it didn't have to. Her ability to fill the debate halls with her presence and her gift of the glittering generality made it possible for her to rely on populism instead of policy.

Certainly every other word is an F***** word, for more than 50% of these.
I don't think he was ever much different - he's always seemed dumb and arrogant and in need of serious Metamucil to treat the serious constipation. With all this pent-up anger, even w/betablockers pumped into him, how come we don't hear abt his strokes?
Wiggles @ 39:
This happened in the late 90s in Austria as well. At that point in time, the center-right People's Party opted to form a coalition with the extreme-right, and ironically named, Freedom Party, rather than with the Social Democrats with whom they'd ruled jointly for a very long time. When they did so, they earned the wrath of the EU and the rest of the world.
Here's hoping they've learned their lesson. They could still choose to form a coalition with the Social Democrats, and have a majority. But there is not just one Nazi-like parties in the parliament this time, but two. The Freedom Party and the Alliance for the Future of Austria, who together earned around 30% of the vote. Should the People's Party opt to coalesce with them, things will indeed get very ugly.

Bradbury turned into a wingnut sometime in the 90's. It was only then that he spoke of 451 being about the dangers of television replacing the book. Apparently he's okay with book bans now.

Interesting. I weep for humanity when I come across things like that. If you ask me, I think this new wave of radicalism, in the west at least, started with Bush II. When you look at Canada, the UK, Australia, they all had right wing leaders in the past 8 years who got their cues from the U.S.. There is no denying that America sets the tone, and the rest follow. I have had it with the fear mongering and the divisiveness. Here's to Obama winning next month.

True. Brokaw is completely a McCain "homer."
If he'd have been a true journalist instead of a de facto marketing consultant for NBC, he'd have told the McCain campaign to go to hell when they threatened to boycott this debate--unless, as it turned out, Brokaw himself would moderate.
Brokaw should've said, "Go ahead and bail. How'd threatening to do that turn out for you the last time. We'll put any damned moderator up there we want."
But Brokaw needs access to those powerful U.S. senators and administration officials, just as Tim Russert did. And G.E. needs a president who will guarantee construction of new nuclear facilities.
Look for nuclear questions from the audience--and a lot of ringers who remind us why we should fear and distrust Obama.

OK, in a sane world, this guy and his daughter would simply be ignored. Then he could sue the school district and get his case laughed out of the courtroom. He could continue to send his daughter to public school with all the books they offer, or cough up the dough for private Christian school. Of course, that would be in a sane world.

Ron @ 74:
McCain does have original ideas.
If they ever get out he will be lynched.
Ash "Hussy" Williams @ 60:
If I had to bet, I'd bet it will go as follows:
Biden will be very polite, try extra hard to keep his answers very short, and rather than provoke or respond to Palin, will simply allow her to hang herself with her own words.
Palin will have practiced so hard, that she'll essentially have memorized stock paragraphs. She'll try very hard not to ramble or ad lib, and just to repeat those stock paragraphs, even when she doesn't know what she's talking about. The answers won't always match the question asked, but at least they'll sound more coherent than the Miss Teen South Carolina answers she gave to Couric and Gibson.
In the end, Palin will have said some silly things, but not the breathtakingly ditzy things for which she is now infamous. Bloggers will concentrate on those silly things, emphasizing just how silly her positions are, while her defenders and the media will note that she wasn't the screw-up that everyone was waiting for.
I hope I'm wrong, of course. I hope she just makes a jaw-dropping fool of herself.

I wonder if this is connected to the missing server hardware that was on the GAO's federal credit card fraud investigation $5.6B list,
ie somebody got a present of 16 untraceable servers to play dirty games with on the Interwebs.
I was just reading an old article about The New York Times spiking a story about Bush's "bulge" in his back during the debates with Kerry. Is this now common knowledge that, indeed, Bush was wearing a wire and cheated? The article I was reading was from MotherJones, I think and was from early '05. Any updates on this story?

These people are such fools I would just like to slap the shit out of them.
The bible has so much in it that seems offensive to me but I never once thought is should be banned.
I personally think the bible written by men for what reason I do not know has things in it that are very unrealistic and done in a manner to try to gain control.
Most thinking people can see it's a good tail and has some good points but not something to base your life upon.
These people would be much better off if they would read the Constitution.
It would serve them better.
Bail out is for foreign investors. NOT mainstreet USA
Karl Denninger included a piece from CNBC that shows Brad Sherman, D-California explaining the bailout bill is carefully worded to bail out the rich foreign investors.
market-ticker.denninger.net
I would have written this off as Karl’s presentation seemed over the top if it were not for the CNBC piece, people were getting lied to again and bent over again. The bill is bad.
Hilarious Bush & McCain & Palin cartoon about the bailout: clicky.

Sarah Palin puts polar bears on thin ice: The United States is drawing closer and closer to one of the most important presidential elections in many years. In particular, the scientific community is anxiously anticipating the outcome on November 4. One of the reasons can be summed up by a December 12, 2007 House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Report.
"This report presents the findings of the Committee’s investigation. The evidence before the Committee leads to one inescapable conclusion: the Bush Administration has engaged in a systematic effort to manipulate climate change science and mislead policymakers and the public about the dangers of global warming."
The Guardian's findings show without a doubt where Sarah Palin stands on global warming, regardless of what she has said in recent interviews.
It also presents a disturbing view of what a potential McCain-Palin administration would look like. It would simply be a continuation of the Bush administration's science policies.
The only difference is that Bush admits global warming is real.
Big Blow to Republican Election Fraud: "In a defeat for Republican challenges, state and federal courts have cleared the way for a weeklong period in which new voters can register and cast an absentee ballot on the same day in Ohio." What can you do with 700 Billion? So much money, so little time - http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=10535089
It could ensure universal healthcare coverage for six years, for example, or upgrade the country's most deficient bridges four times over. All the work to upgrade coastal levees that's been done since Hurricane Katrina? It's a mere drop in the proverbial bucket - US$7 billion, or just 1 per cent.
Or, on a more mundane level, US$700 billion could pay the wages of 22 million average Americans for a year. You could even shoot for the moon. The Apollo programme that put man on the moon in 1969 cost roughly US$164 billion in today's dollars.
According to the Wall Street Journal, half the money Roosevelt spent on his New Deal programme to lift the country out of the Depression was for public works projects. For US$250 billion in today's dollars, the nation got: 8000 parks; 40,000 public buildings; 72,000 schools.
Why John McCain has Trouble with Truth and Taxes - http://www.politicalaffairs.net/article/articleview/7494/
Despite repeated corrections by fact-checking watchdogs, the McCain campaign continued to falsely claim this week that Barack Obama would raise taxes on working families.
Analysis of the two presidential candidates tax proposals by the non-partisan Tax Policy Center, as well as various media investigations, have revealed that Barack Obama's tax plan is consistent with his pledge to provide a tax cut for 95 percent of working families.
By contrast, McCain's tax proposals provide new tax breaks for corporations totaling $300 billion, including a massive $4 billion tax break for oil companies which through price gouging have made record profits in 2008. In addition some 58 percent of income tax cuts would go to the wealthiest one percent of Americans.
But McCain's false attacks are also an attempt to divert attention from the massive tax increase he plans to sneak into the health care system by eliminating tax incentives on employment-based health care benefits, taxing American working families and employers for health benefits for the first time ever to the tune of $3.6 trillion dollars.
Recent studies of McCain's health care tax, a replica of a plan George W. Bush pushed early on, would boot as many as 27 million out of the employment-based insurance system, leaving millions of families at the mercy of private insurance companies in the expensive individual market.

Roger Ebert: Guess who's not coming to dinner; 'I do not like you, John McCain. My feeling has nothing to do with issues. It has to do with common courtesy. During the debate, you refused to look Barack Obama in the eye. Indeed, you refused to look at him at all. Even when the two of you shook hands at the start, you used your eyes only to locate his hand, and then gazed past him as you shook it.'

Visualization of 2008 Presidential Candidate Donations: McCain vs. Obama - http://www.pitchinteractive.com/election2008/
What is most striking to us is how much more of Obama's donations come from the $1 to $100 bracket. This data also shows that a majority of McCain's donations come from the $500 to $1000 bracket of donors. The amount is still smaller than Obama's, but this makes up almost two-thirds of his donations.

Today, the Office of Public Responsibility and the Department of Justice Inspector General released the culmination of an 18-month investigation: a report finding that the firing process of the nine U.S. Attorneys was “fundamentally flawed” and in some cases, governed by politics. The investigation also found that former attorney general Alberto Gonzales, Justice Department aide Kyle Sampson, and other Justice officials made “inconsistent, misleading, and inaccurate” statements about their reasons for firing the attorneys.

Friends, we are in a mess of catastrophic proportions on so many fronts that it will be difficult to unravel all the various strains of this explosive Bushian virus. I use the term virus, because Bush is trying to pack the courts with his appointees from the neo-con right, placing government officials in corporations and in some cases, in law schools so that the neo-con approach to the destruction of the federal government may have academic credentials and blessings. Yes, this is an artificially created virus intended to kill the patient-namely, our democracy and our formerly free and decent lives.
TrooperGate heating up: Palin Implicated By Witness in Troopergate Probe; 'An Alaska woman who owns a company that processes workers’ compensation claims in the state has told an independent investigator that she was urged by the office of Gov. McCain Repeating Keating Era Mistakes, Regulator Warns....
In 1991, McCain railed against raising the FDIC insurance limit from $40,000 to its current $100,000 level. "The perversity of Federal deposit insurance is exemplified by the taxpayer bailout of the savings and loan industry," McCain said, while omitting his own role in the scandal that actually precipitated the S&L crisis.
"I think it is generally acknowledged that the failure of the savings and loan industry, to a large degree, can be directly attributed to the unwarranted expansion of deposit insurance," McCain continued. "Basic coverage was increased from $40,000 to $100,000. No longer was deposit insurance for the small depositor. It became the safety blanket for large, sophisticated depositors and freewheeling bankers."
Now, as McCain echoes Barack Obama's call to raise the FDIC insurance level from $100,000 to $250,000, Black believes the idea that FDIC insurance rates ever caused the S&L crisis can finally be put to rest as being "complete bunk."
