I'm one of the many unfortunates from NORTH Carolina who, from time to time are mistaken for a SOUTH Carolinian of ill repute. There are many good South Carolinians, and like most North Carolinians, they suffer the ignominy brought to their state by a few dimwitted idiots like the three pictured. While I'm not bragging about her, and she IS my """representative""" in the US House of Representatived, she is NOT from South Carolina, but is, again the """representative""" of the 5th US House of Representatives district in North Carolina. Most progressive folk in our district are ashamed and appalled at her speech, her speeches, and her unrepentant idiocy. But she IS a NORTH Carolinian. Thanks for allowing me to clear up your mistaken notion about our """representative"""

When a state has it comin', it's got it comin, and South Carolina has it comin'. It would be great if all states were smart enough to vote for Senators like Vermont does, but thats not the case. Same holds true for Congressmen and Governors. Illinois, in the spirit of bipartisan clusterfucking, impeached the last Democratic Governor and his Republican predecessor sits in federal prison.

You see, this seems to be a problem......i could say that the Cherokee in me, or the Scott in me, or the Irish, or the Swiss in me.
The problem is that there is more of a division of income in this country than there is a "racial" divide, and as long the monied super-citizen can exploit this divide the rest of the huddled masses will be $$$tuck in our humble existence while the super-citizen grows $$tronger.
I cannot speak for Edwin and I am sure that he would be pissed at me if I were to try, but from a personal level I want to see our President grow some cahones(sp) and start knocking some heads together be they of any color or creed or sexual orientation, or aptitude, or special needs.........

In the last five years alone, chemical factories, manufacturing plants and other workplaces have violated water pollution laws more than half a million times. The violations range from failing to report emissions to dumping toxins at concentrations regulators say might contribute to cancer, birth defects and other illnesses.

However, the vast majority of those polluters have escaped punishment. State officials have repeatedly ignored obvious illegal dumping, and the Environmental Protection Agency, which can prosecute polluters when states fail to act, has often declined to intervene.

NYT has compiled data on more than 200,000 facilities that have permits to discharge pollutants and a searchable by state, database of violations.

Just thought I'd mention that as of September 12th President Obama kept America safer longer after taking office than his predecessor did. He's now at least 2 days better than Bush at not having terrorists bring down our tallest real estate with human filled missiles and when all other presidents are added in Bush is at the bottom of the list in that statistic.


Let's see how far to the right they go before they fall off of the edge of this flat world.

Was just in Florence, SC, because it's the place for an overnight stop along I-95 halfway between NYC and Miami. The Mall had mostly blacks, but the ice cream parlor and local restaurant (a sports bar with a section of tables with white tablecloths!) were all white.

South Carolina has the highest manufacturing share of jobs in the South and the worst unemployment. It is the home of The Citadel, Bob Jones University, and Furman -- very unliberal colleges in the extreme.

Yet things are changing and it could even be in play for the Democrats by 2012 or 2016. Some of the same forces that moved NC and Virginia Blue are beginning to disenchant locals with the GOP there, too.

They came back filled with stories of their trip, along with one warning: skip South Carolina! They changed their return route to avoid it. They said that something about the people there just made them uncomfortable. Everything else about the trip was great.

I wonder if whatever is afflicting SCers today is a remnant of the same attitudes that bothered my friends, all those years ago?

Heck, they have political coups at the state level and imprison the Governor on the losing side of the coup. Among all the _other_ charms of Alabama. But, yes, when I was working in Baltimore in the '80s I was told that the South _really_ starts at the South Carolina state line when you see the first Klan billboard.

Having traveled through that HATE State over the years a general conversation with any functional illiterate will confirm their ignorance. Hey, I was born in South Carolina! It happened near the end of WWII. My father had been a drugstore clerk all during the Depression, and now he got a job offer to run "Doc" Beasley's drug store in SC, so he had a step up. He only realized when he got there that his unofficial job was to be "doctor" to the blacks. White people would come in with prescriptions after seeing a doctor. The blacks didn't have the money, or a doctor who would see them. So they lined up at the back door expecting my father to diagnose and treat their problems. At first, he protested that he didn't have a medical license. But then it became clear that if he didn't do it, they wouldn't get any treatment at all. So he did it all the time he was there. He'd dispense medicines, stitch people up, things like that. Any more serious problem he'd have to send people the the charity hospital about 50 miles away. They'd have to get there any way they could.

Ah, Sweet Home South Carolina.

We left when the war was over.

there's no funding for illegal aliens. But conservatives are arguing all over the place that verification of status has been voted down in Congress, yet I cannot seem to find a story on a non-conservative website saying this is the case. Are they making this stuff up too? I just can't seem to find proof of it.
I took a look over at a few right wing blogs & man there are some ignorant people in this country. I see buzz words like socialism & birthing & garbage.

Don't forget the worst incident of disrespect in Congress was also perpetrated by a South Carolinian, Rep. Preston Brooks. In May, 1856, during his "Crime Against Kansas" speech concerning Kansas being admitted to the Union as a Slave state, anti-slavery Sen. Charles Sumner had very harsh words for two Senators in particular - Douglas of Illinois, and Butler of South Carolina. An example:

"The Senator (Butler) from South Carolina has read many books of chivalry, and believes himself a chivalrous knight, with sentimcuts of honor and courage. Of course he has chosen a mistress to whom he has made his vows, and who, though ugly to others, is always lovely to him; though polluted in the sight of the world, is chaste in his sight I mean the harlot, Slavery. For her, his tongue is always profuse in words."

Butler was a relative of Rep. Brooks, and this speech prompted Brooks to enter the Senate chamber and severely beat Sumner with his cane. Due to the beating, Sumner's seat was vacant for a number of years.

As for Butler, he SURVIVED a censure vote, but did resign.
