I'm very sorry to hear of your father's passing. My thoughts are with you and your family.

So sorry Keith. Will keep you and your family in my thoughts.

I just had dinner with my mom, whom I haven't seen in a year, and we were able to tell a few funny stories about my late father with minimal tears.

Godspeed and all the best for Keith and the family.

And shame on those (Dallas Teabaggers, etc) who trivialized what the Olbermanns were enduring. May you live long enough for the karmic wheel to run you over, fuckwits.

No, not 'cause I want to gain new knowledge about jake braking techniques, not for the stark and often beautiful snowscapes, not for a possible head-on collision with a Palin family member on a snow-machine. No it's simple--the one female trucker (Lisa) is a STONE FOX, even by CA and FL standards. And the gal is pretty good (though a little green) at driving a rig over conditions most drivers, regardless of X and Y chromosome configuration, could muster.

This one is funny, but not newsworthy. But, this individual interviewed is a useful benchmark, to measure other people against.

In particular, I would measure those against this standard, those who can't tell the difference between a Democrat and a Republican.

Karen's picture

Seriously? That's a real movement? I guess I shouldn't be shocked. I mean, combining new age woo woo fluff with philosophy of government isn't that much wackier than a lot of the other philosophies of government out there.

Good luck escaping the long arm of the U.S. government, though, with those arguments.

I know how long you have had to deal with your father's situation and I commend you for sharing his health with us. I know how difficult it is to deal with these things because I lost my older brother 3 years ago now. I lost my father in 1988 and in both cases I broke down at first and sobbed uncontrolably. I know that they had health problems but nothing like the sufferring your father went through. Please be strong and move on in life and do the job that we are all looking up to you to carry out.
Thanks for what you do.

A film taken from a streetcar traveling down Market Street in San Francisco in 1906, a few days before the earthquake/fire destroyed the area.

This film, originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn with the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum figured out exactly when it was shot. From New York trade papers announcing the film showing to the wet streets from recent heavy rainfall & shadows indicating time of year & actual weather and conditions on historical record, even when the cars were registered (he even knows who owned them and when the plates were issued!).. It was filmed only four days
before the quake and shipped by train to NY for processing. The clocktower at the end of the street at the Embarcadero wharf is still there.

Has anyone seen any polling data out there about how many people are now leaving the Democratic Party? Truly not voting for it any more? I'd be interested in learning the actual numbers.

Within the confines of our broken government and archaic, idiotic electoral system, we're always going to deal with the Democratic/Republican duopoly. Which, for so many Democrats, for so long now, has meant tactical voting for the perceived lesser of two evils. I would be really interested to find out where the breaking point is.

I would be interested to find out people's different opinions on when the "lesser of two evils" argument fails to persuade people who nevertheless do not believe Democrats and Republicans are genuinely the same thing. And what they really do about it.

when we have 2/3rds of the elgible voters that don't vote.

Karen's picture

What I'm asking is how many registered, voting Democrats have left, or are leaving, the party due to the behavior they have seen on the part of their representatives since the Democrats resumed control of the federal government.

And, on a personal level, what convinces folks to abandon the lesser of two evils voting tactic? I'd be interested to hear even people's personal breaking points here, and what their arguments are. There's a constant battle between the "What's the difference between the parties?" camp and the "Republicans are still worse!" camp. I think the Obama Administration and the Democrats in Congress are creating a third way of thought: "Yeah, Republicans are worse, but it doesn't matter anymore." I'd like to hear the diverse opinions about why it doesn't matter anymore.

Karen,

You are a few steps ahead of most of the US population. Most people intuitively know that our government is crippled. Like the ill-informed Tea-Baggers, they know we are not getting the most benefit out of what we pay in taxes. They know Congress is subjected and subservient to the bribery mechanisms of wealth. Nobody wants to see endless wars and a broken economy.

Few know what to do about. Without the “why”, people are caught up in the Dem vs. Repub faux debates… “It’s the Liberals” “It’s the Conservatives” is an easy, yet trite rallying cry.

I am aware of your writings on electoral reform and the proposal for shared representation based on election percentages. I agree with it. You have stepped beyond the “why” (representation benefiting the broadest numbers).

Until we get beyond the sanctity of a governmental system established 230 years ago when we were fighting King George, however, the necessary changes to get there from here won’t be forthcoming (or at most in very small increments).

People need to recognize there are alternatives to our election process that would not turn our country upside down. That is a hard sell. The concept of a Senate was a necessary compromise when we had 13 small colonies – not so much today. A two-party system becomes quickly antiquated if you take away the “winner take all” mentality of our elections. There are many more examples, I’m sure, but my point is that until people accept that there are viable alternatives to our established system, the changes won’t happen.

Once again, thanks a lot, NRA and SCOTUS.

A shooting happens in L.A., and this can be linked somehow to the Supreme Court? Not sure I can buy that one.

Besides (and I know I'm not going to win popularity contests here with this position), I'm not sure I understand progressive antipathy to upholding gun rights. I have no problem with local and municipal regulations, but I do believe in the Constitutional right to own guns, under both the Second and the Ninth Amendments.

As nasty a rathole neighborhood as any in South Central or Pico-Union, but with easier freeway access. An big old Sears dept store (got to be vacant by now), two raunchy strip clubs and what was a 24-hr porn theater with girls who'd appear every hour on the hour. BTW, those are the highlights!

Smashed car windows from smash-and-grabs, hustlers and junkies against the buildings. Don't even think of finding a 24-hr taco truck nearby!

L.A. has a bit of a gang problem, which is partly why they put in place a 1994 law which banned assault weapons. And now that it's been allowed to lapse, shit like this could become more frequent again.

Karen's picture

Had the assault weapons ban accomplished the goal of reducing murders and attempted murders in L.A.?

I'm not asking rhetorically. I'm genuinely asking.

la cops are for the assault weapons bans

a few years back, there was a shootout in the valley, with the perps all having assault weapons

the lapd had to go to a local firearm store to equal the perps firepower

and i just want to know why that little section before the comma seems to mean nothing to the wingnuts

i am not a constitutional atty, but logic dictates that the founders put that section about militias in for one reason....that gun ownership should be tied to it

or else, they couldve put in something about individuals having the right to defend themselves, hunt for food, etc

they didnt

and trust me, a handgun is a terrible weapon in war

but a bazooka is good

so i want a bazooka...and i dare the supremes to say i cant have one

i want a hand grenade and a nuke too

Wingnuts can't read. ;)

Oh, there's little doubt that the right to gun ownership is linked to the need for well regulated militias. Fearful that the newly created federal government could easily become another remote tyrant over the states, the founders sought to preserve the right of "the people" to keep and bear arms, lest the federal government threaten the "security of [any of the newly] free state[s]." The people of the sovereign states were to retain the right to maintain arsenals so that citizen militia could be formed if needed.

Conservative jurisprudence sees in the Second Amendment a concept of self defense, which the Supreme Court now applies broadly, eventually deriving an individual right to own a gun for one's own protection from the right to own one to protect one's state. (It's one of those rare instances where conservatives want to broaden and expand the rights of the people and the liberals want to restrict themselves to a more literal or originalist reading of the text.)

It's not entirely clear, though, whether the Court will hold that the Second Amendment restricts the powers of the states. Whether to "Incorporate" the Second Amendment onto the states will make for a fascinating case study. Typically, conservatives tout a limited federal government and broad state powers, while liberals value the reverse. But we all know how one's jurisprudence can change when political issues are at stake. It could be an interesting lineup of judges that ultimately decides that one.

Seems like alot recently.

I read that both Andrew Koenig and Michael Blosil (Marie Osmond's son)were taking anti-depressants.

With all the ads for a pill for this, and pill for that, people seem to think pharmaceuticals are a cure-all, and they obviously are not.

I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all

much of life, I've never done the pill/anti-depressant route (know a doctor/blow a doctor, or have a Cadillac HC plan w/bulletproof windows and lawyers); I feel kind of old, but I'm glad I couldn't tell a valium from an Ecstacy from a percodan from a darvon, etc.

Clearly, these "newer, cleaner, better" drugs are no better than the old standbys, for me meth and booze, but people sure don't seem to be getting nearly the sentences or offered the treatment programs that are "offered" for speed or coke. Gee, could part of the reason be that so many quack docs, pharmacists and drug manufacturers benefit from the status quo? Nahh, couldn't be...

John Mackey, the Bullgoose Looney of Whole Foods, is now writing about the need for trust.. sounding like the current corporate literature, he completely ignores pay differentials and its part in 'trust' and teamwork etc.. what a jerk! I stopped shopping at Whole Foods back when Mackey came out opposing health care reform.. I've saved quite a lot of money buying my natural foods other places.. And aside from the Whole Foods staff who are suppose to ignore compensation in the context of their corporate betters whom they should trust(?), customers are suppose to ignore the fact that Whole Foods carries more and more processed foods and less bulk items thus increasing elite pricing and profits and decreasing our choice .. 'Trust' counsels Manipulating John.

My deepest sympathies to you and your family on the loss of your father. You father sounded like a brave man the past few months and you were a loving son doing what you could to bring him some peace in his final days. The loss will hurt but take comfort in the fact that he is no longer experiencing physical pain and he is with his beloved wife. And be thankful for the many years you had with him -- he was a success in life because he had the most difficult job in the world (parent) and performed it perfectly.
