Glenn Beck ended his show with another his patented weepfests yesterday. It was special. And not just because it was about as sincere as the last time we saw Beck cry.

No, this one was special because it was accompanied by a loopy rant about how "life was simple" in the Golden Days of America, and then rambled into a weird metaphor comparing the nation to teenagers who innocently get stuck at a party and have to come home to mom and dad and face the music.

No, really. I'm not exaggerating.

Apparently the straying behavior for which we have to face the consequences now has something to do with having elected Barack Obama as President. Because the entire preceding show was a rant attacking the White House as riddled with "radical Marxists" who want to transform America into a communist state.

What got him especially worked up was this video featuring White House Communication Director, Anita Dunn:

Well, Beck will somewhat rightly get to claim this as a coup -- Dunn reportedly is on her way out anyway, but Beck will get to claim he helped push her -- because it's frankly a pretty dumb statement to say that Mao and Mother Teresa are two of your favorite political philosophers. (Both leave a lot to be desired, frankly.) Per "Revolution," "When you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao ..."

Now, I always thought people who rejected Marxist thought out of hand were playing into their hands, so I have read Mao's "Little Red Book." And there is wisdom to be found there, along with a tyrant's blindness. Still, the line from Mao that Dunn quoted was not only innocuous, it is -- like much of Mao's "philosophy" -- rather generic in nature. Who, after all, can really object to the admonition to persevere in the face of being told to give up? Certainly not Glenn Beck.

No, he just objects because the person who said it was Mao.

Look, Anita Dunn never said she subscribed to Communist ideology; she just said she admired Mao's writings. (At times, even ardent anti-Communists like George W. Bush admitted to being fascinated by Mao.) There is, in fact, a substantial difference.

Still, Beck is all worked up because he thinks radical Marxists have taken over the White House -- even though the best he can come up with is McCarthyite smears like this. We've been bad teenagers, letting these evil radicals into the government.

You have to wonder what he thinks the consequences of that ought to be.

the majority of the electorate voted for Obama BECAUSE OF the policies he said he was going to implement? They (we) didn't need anyone's permission, or anyone to explain the consequences of those policy decisions. We knew full what they were, and we want those consequences.

are going Obama will have a 23% approval rating by June 2010.

He's handling things right now, during one of the worst periods in our country's history and still carries a 55% approval rating. Things will be one hell of a lot better by 2010 and even better by 2012.

What things?

should spent time debating you? I bet you still pissed about Nobel prize?

He is doing great.http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/daily_presidential_tracking_poll

..... by about 8 points, than Reagan's was at the same time in his first year.

Is it too early in the morning for reality?

The policies put in place by the Administration(Bush and Obama), namely the Stimulus package, are starting to show a postive impact on the economy. Home sales and retail numbers are up. Although the Stock Market has more to do with Corporate pockets that 10,000 will SLOWLY drag the unemployment numbers up. Because the Corporations will have to put people to work to make MORE money! Obama's approval numbers will stay steady because the Republican party still has no clear rival to run against him. Even when they do The President will step his game up. Ask Hillary.

to stomach watching Beck. I don't know how anyone else watches him either.

Although...

maybe she should have said,.

" I am greatly inspired by the Genius of Glenn Beck when he said,

' Waaaaaaaaaa!'"

to get the tears rolling? Yes. For anyone who did not see the tape of him smelling the stuff and rubbing his eyes, that is how he whips up the phony tears.

A complete fuckturd.

That's how he whipped up tears for a photo shoot. It's amazing how idiots like you keep repeating this crap. It apparently takes the vicks a little while to kick in since I've watched him go for 10 minutes or so before crying. Amazing! You stupid liberals just can't fathom that a conservative would actually care enough about his country to cry. I guess you're feeling a little guilty.

The Lithium only works when you take it.

..is it Marxist, Socialist or Communist? Make up your f-ing min...oh wait, its glenn beck.

Just imagine a racial slur where "fascist," "socialist," "communist," et al are in Beck's diatribes. That's what he's really saying, anyway.

I know at some point in time the GOP actually added balance to our nations political views. They were actually an equal and necessary contributing force to the direction this nation went in. I used to sit on the fence between GOP and Democrat with regard to my views. But these days... the people who affiliate themselves with the GOP still are really being played for suckers. Fox news and the ASS-CLOWNS they hire to "entertain" their viewers have done more damage to the credibility of the GOP and have contributed immensely to the destabilization of this nation and it's drooping status in the eyes of the world as a nation of peace and equality. I know there will always be people like Beck or Coulter or the other self-anointed leaders of the 1945 white movement who are only happy when minorities and women can be controlled or "given" positions of opinionated power (such as Coulter), but to actually surrender a party to this sect is nothing short of demeaning to the party and an embarrassment to everything this nation was supposed to be striving to achieve. I am red for the red states...

Eisenhower and Goldwater haven't stopped spinning in their graves for the last 10 years.

They actually used to care about average working Americans, before they started whoring for the corporatists.

I bet we could hook those spinning corpses up to a generator and create enough electricity to power several states.

you moron.

Beck gives the left lots to be angry about. And if I understand Red State, the White House gives the right lots to be angry about. When left and right wake up to the fact that they literally haven't time to be angry with one another, that there isn't enough to pay the bills, the right and left better reach out and come together around money. The right and left coming together around money might be the only thing to get Washington to be truly responsive.

I've been following politics for more than 30 years and have not seen our country so divided since the Viet Nam war protests. I think it is probably worse now.

Only something like 9/11 could bring the country back together and then, as we've seen, it does not last long.

Rent "A Face In The Crowd" starring Any Griffith and see if he isn't a knock off of the Lonesome Rhodes character.

And be sure to see what happens to him.

Can you give me a brief synopsis in case I can't find the movie.

)O(

But in the trailer, the Beck-like character did not cry once.

I guess in those simpler times, men did not go all weepy two or three times a week.

Good times.

presented facts to debate someone instead of just comparing them to movie characters.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Face_in_the_Crowd_(film)

I've got to find this movie.

John Lennon and Glenn Beck have something in common? Maybe there is hope for reuniting this nation after all.

But he got one thing right - I sure as hell don't want to come home from work and watch his show! I mean, using a crappy old coke commercial as an example of how good life was in the olden daze?!? jeebus..

Beck "ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow" Y'know?

..everything is gonna be . . alright.

It's funny because the only coke Glenn used to care about was the kind that flew up his nose.

Kids, don't do drugs-this is what could happen to you.

"Look, Anita Dunn never said she subscribed to Communist ideology; she just said she admired Mao's writings." D. Neiwert

No she did not "just" say she admired Mao's writing. She is on the podium, being taped, describing him as one of two of "my favorite political philosophers" and one of "the two people I turn to most."

This woman is making this speech in June, 2009, as White House Communications Director, after all the distortions of everyone associated with Obama's words and those of his associates for over two years? Not smart on her part.

You got it right when you said it was a dumb thing to say. You shouldn't try and soften it by intepreting the words for her.

There was a part she said about looking to those two people when it came to making succinct comments, or something like that. That got left off the third or fourth time he showed the clip. It wasn't just their philosophy, it was the way they formed their comments.

..... but my understanding is that she was making a joke and you can hear the crowd laughing.

But regardless, are we so insecure about Capitalism that we must trash anyone with a differing perspective. Mao, like Beck and a broken clock, were surely right once in a while.

No she wasn't joking. The crowd laughed because of two people she paired together. Mao, when asked how he could win said, You fight your battle and I'll fight mine. Mother Teresa was asked by someone if she (the someone) could come to Calcutta to help Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa told the someone, to find their own Calcutta. Notice both quotes are short but carry a big lesson. Dunn was telling the students to fight their own battles and not let anyone tell them they couldn't win. Also to find their own purposes and work toward that goals.

but I still don't see the problem with quoting a world figure, whether we agree with their politics or not.

I don't have a problem with it either. She didn't say she endorsed what he did, she just liked the way he said something.

She says her third tip "come from two of my favorite political philosophers, Mao Tse Tung and Mother Theresa, not often coupled with each other, (audience laughter) but the two people I turn to most to make a simple point..."

She is not simply quoting Mao, she is describing him as one of her favorite political philosophers.

She not only let Glenn Beck fight his own war, but passed him the ammunition.

Callling Mao "a world figure" is just a little disingenous, and that's putting it kindly. Mao was one of the bloodiest dictators in history who murdered between 40 and 70 million of his own people. I can't believe that such a high percentage of people on our side are as stupid as they are showing themselves to be.

And then there's this

Look, Anita Dunn never said she subscribed to Communist ideology; she just said she admired Mao's writings.

That's not just stupid. That's fucking what-the-hell's-the-matter-with-you-paging-Dr.-Orwell stupid. She said that Mao was one of her "favorite political philosophers" w/o making any sort of distinction whatsoever. You want to see double think? That's it!!!

God, I fucking hate being a liberal.

PS: Here's my blog entry on the subject. It's lengthy, in part because I felt I had to establish my liberal bona fides but I think it holds together: http://smirkingchimp.com/thread/24412#comment...

And Dunn's the effing WHITE HOUSE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR! Jesus Christ on a bun, how the hell did she ever get that job????!!!!!

I agree. Especially given the hysteria that the rw'ers have been trying to whip up around Obama, it's hard to imagine a more boneheadedly stupid statement. And she's the White House communications director?

I agree completely with that you're saying, ricky.

Not only is it stupid to say such a thing when you're the White House Communications Director, but it's a stupid thing to hold Mao as one of your two favorite political philosophers.

And no, Mr. Neiwert should not sacrifice his own credibility by trying to soften up her words for her.

This woman was great when she said straight out that Fox News was a political adversary. Sadly, at the same time, she shows herself to be quite naive and not smart enough to avoid giving the adversary ammo.

...and the idiot handed Fox a huge PR victory. One of the few people to righteously attack Fox like they should be attacked and then she turns around and hands them a knife to stab her with on a silver platter.

And here's the best part: They were PREPARED remarks!

Jesus, I want to pull my eyeballs out!

As you might conclude, I like Glenn Beck.
It is interesting to see a different perspective on his views. If anything, one of the Bloggers stated that Dunn's comments were stupid. She could have at least added the disclaimer "Mao, although a horrible person...". For example "Even Hilter, an evil historical figure, is to be respected for going from a pauper to world leader..." that wasn't too hard.
In any other administration and time I don't think this video would be that signifigant. But, Obama's own words were that we would know him by the people he keeps around him. Van Jones said he was a communist, Mark Lloyd admires what Chavez (a socialist) has done, Health Care is a socialist concept (I believe the quote was by reagan in the 50's that the american people wouldn't accept it because it was a socialistic concept), we are seeing plenty of obama propoganda between comic books and songs, this is right out of the communist playbook, there are bills out about curbing free speech (see the lloyd video on Beck), being alligned with labor unions is a favorite socialist practice, hearing the rich villified is the same (I make about 60K, if not for the rich i wouldn't have a job), Gun control is a precursor to tyrany like a loud fart is to a bad smell (my goodness, there are lots of ways to harm without a gun, guns are just the most convient), I look back on obamas past and it appears that many of the people he surrounded himself with were marxist. When i read history and see the expression of marxism in china, russia, and many other nations, it isn't pretty. Even PRAVDA has put out an article about "americas decent into marxism". These are a few of the things i see that concern me.
I simply want freedom. i want to keep the majority of the money i make, spend it how i want, be prosperous and see others be prosperous. Your philosophy threatens this, and that is why i don't like it. I look forward to your comments. Please make them intelligent, i want reasons to believe that the world isn't coming to an end, it will do no good to call me names etc. thanks.

I watched Beck yesterday from beginning to end, something I don't believe I have been able to do before. I'm glad I'm not the only one who couldn't follow his tale about kids going to a party and the parents and your own kids and whatever. Did he forget the Vick's yesterday because I didn't see any tears.

He showed that video of the white house's press lady four times and each time he showed a shorter and shorter version of it until the last time he showed it, it was very misleading.

Then the ads from the 50s or 60s and how he wants to go back when life was simple did make sense because complicated things are a super duper challenge for the Beckster.

When small white children used to share the empty post-game locker room with Mean Joe Green and offer him sweetened beverages.

I'll admit it wasn't a bad commercial for Coke(if a bit syrupy), but how does it relate to anything that Glennda was talking about?!?

Like when you could publicly make up a story about your Mother committing suicide and no one would bother to fact check it!

Back when you could pound 3 or 4 lines down, wash it back with a little Jack Daniels, and stalk the local competition on your morning zoo show before playing a double-shot of Wham!

When your brain starts looking like swiss cheese, there may be small "gaps" in your ability to reason and behave in a sane manner.

I, for one, am going to take Glen's word for it. I'm going to take my Kodak Disc camera, grab a glass-bottled Coke, and cry nostalgic about the good times.

(now where did I put those things...?)

And where did I hear this type of argument before? Oh - I remember...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWRVbWMvi7c

"I've known [Glen Beck] for years. And I've been operating under the assumption that the reason [Glen] devotes so much time and energy to shouting at the rain was that he simply didn't get it. Well, I was wrong. [Glen]'s problem isn't that he doesn't get it. [Glen]'s problem is that he can't sell it!"

"We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, I promise you [Glen Beck] is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things, and two things only: making you afraid of it, and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections. You gather a group of middle age, middle class, middle income voters who remember with longing an easier time, and you talk to them about family, and American values and character, and you wave [old photos of fascists] and you scream about patriotism. You tell them [they're] to blame for their lot in life. And you go on television and you call [him] a [fascist]."

For some reason I listened to this (on Sirius) yesterday and was laughing my head off as I was driving. I saw one person looking at me as if I was... Beck like. Anyway, I was thinking that this is what Beck is like every day (I rarely listen to him. I let David Neiwert do it for me. regardless, Beck is insane.

day after day after day???

The same things said about the same guy.

Every. Single. Day.

So that you have something to complain about.

Every. Single. Day.

I would buy a gun right now and hand it over to you with specific intructions to shoot me if I ever went to a website every single day for the sole purpose of expressing my disgust for one particular human being.

I'd have those documents signed and duly executed so as to leave no doubt as to my intents.

you're not spouting that philosophy over in freeperville (lgf or whereever) in the midst of the continual Obama hate-fest. They ban commenters for that sort of thing.

Yet

you seem strangely tolerant of someone like Beck spreading venomous lies. Every. Single. Day.

LOL.

so mixing booze with opiates isn't exactly a great prescription for "mental health".

Apparently, it leads to a lucrative talk show deal with Fox News!

Not a single one. I was just engrossed in how he does things. There is a method behind his madness and it's no acident.

Do you have a Bull Shit Deflector or something? I am glad to see Beck did not impact your ability to post coherently.

I mean...communism? WTF?

President Barack Obama has signed a 7.5 billion dollar aid package for Pakistan.

OMG he's giving money to them now! The Muzzies are coming!

is called the Ghostdance.

It comes from a simpler time in America.

like junk and crap products to consume so peoples values and goals were a little more focused and long term oriented?

Life is complicated enough without mass consumerism dominating everything.

They thought "gulag" was a bad word for Commie pinkos.

The only thing stupider is Glenn's viewers.

Beck sets up his red phone and says only the white house has the number. Then he accuses a whole lot of people in the white house of a whole lot of things. Then he insinuates that since the white house doesn't call to dispute his claims, they must be true.

He's a fu*king con man. He knows damned well the white house isn't going to call him no matter what kind of trash he spews.

Do you think that it's something in the cosmos that saddles the world with a babbling idiot drunk and their creeping commie crap every fifty years or so?

Can you imagine what it would've been like if cable TV and FOX NEWS had been around at the time of Tail Gunner Joe?

)O(

I know one sponsor who probably won't drop becky's show

Vicks Vapor Rub.

After all, Beck's anus has gotta be horribly shredded by paper cuts after pulling all of those facts through it.

Now commencing the removal of coffee from monitor.

Beck's alma mater, the University of Uhhh....Wherever.

I'm tired, so very tired and it is so soothing to fall watch Becky while all my brain cells go dead and the next thing I know it's morning in 'merika!

I watched the show. Don't worry, I'm okay now.

The book props he used would have been more effective if they did not all look brand new and unread.

What Dunn quoted from Mao was indeed innocuous, BUT since Mao said it she must be an evil communist who wants to kill millions of people. And as POP mentioned above he showed her saying it four times, each time a more truncated version.

I truly cannot imagine the mindset of the people that buy this bullshit.

)O(

Kinda like people who "bought" his book?

They got the book for free from Townhall. Same reason all right wing rant books are "No. 1 Bestsellers". Bought in bulk and given away for free.

"What Dunn quoted from Mao was indeed innocuous, BUT since Mao said it she must be an evil communist who wants to kill millions of people."

Here is what Dunn said: "two of my favorite political philosophers, Mao Tse Tung and Mother Theresa, not often coupled with each other, (audience laughter)but the two people I turn to most to make a simple point..."

The quote she uses from one of her two favorite political philosophers is not what Beck is attacking. It is the description of who she admires and what she admires him for.

Dunn is the Communications Director of the White House. And a pretty foolish communicator.

as a communicator if she didn't admire Mao for his communications skills. sheeesh but you sound damn foolish yourself quite often ricky. If you'd actually read some Mao you might actually have a clue why she said it.

Mao was a violent dictator who arrested and often killed people for thought crimes. He killed between 40 and 70 million of his own people. I don't give a fuck how good a communicator he was, you simply don't endorse people like that, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE THE GOD DAMN WHITE HOUSE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR!

Jesus, you people are stupid!

Paging Dr. Orwell. Dr. Orwell. Paging Dr. Orwell.

to not remember that a whole lot of Americans are shit stoopid and could never make the intellectual leap to Mao, yes. However, the audience she was addressing was not those people.

I wonder if Vicks Vaborub is one his final sponsors.

The problem of course is that thanks to the internet clips like this one will be circulated to hundreds of thousands of right-wingers, who will drink all the Beck koolaid.

And digging around in every written word or spoken word someone has said over a career to find the "gotcha" quote is part and parcel of this wonderful (?) new era of viralism. And it's probably true that
politicians/academics who are progressives will have something potentially viral in their past.

There's little we can do about, I guess.

Seriously? Mean Joe Green and some Paul Anka twaddle?

I suppose he couldn't use the Kodachrome song, because it was written by that commie-nazi, Paul Simon.

)O(

Quick call Rainier Wolfcastle!

I'm really sick of these people hijacking the founding father's for their arch conservative ideals. Sure they laid the foundation for democracy, but they are not the end all and be all of the American Way, and more importantly, they are not conservatives. I ask, who would have been the conservatives and who would have been the progressives in the late 1700's?

He's right. In America, when the going gets tough, when the nation is in shambles, we try our best to fix it. We don't get paid millions of dollars to sit behind a desk and fling whatever bullshit, paranoid delusion that comes to mind at our idiotic viewers. The way I see it, the problem is that the baby boomers WATCH TOo MUCH TV. They buy too much of the shit they advertise, they watch too much of asshats like this guy, and then they go out and protest against their own best interests.

Jesus-fucking-Christ this country is screwed...

Meanwhile, 3 of my friends who came back with engineering degrees cannot find a job, and this jagoff is trying to tell his viewers that people in the Obama administration want to murder millions of people and enslave the American people. Guess what jackass, WE ALREADY ARE. We are enslaved to the things we own and the debt we owe. Welcome to the real world.

Glenn Beck now claims the founding fathers founded a "republic" not a "democracy". Unwind that one for me.

It is not a true Republic, because in a true Republic congress would elect the President, but it was founded as a Republic.

Where I part with these "Founding Fathers" nonsense is that they are elevated to God-like status by the righties.

They were men. Good men in most cases, but human in all cases. They were not able to look into the future and see the problems we are dealing with now.

)O(

A republic can only really be two things, a dictatorship or a democracy.

The reason the Founding Fathers guaranteed at a minimum a republic, was because they were still trying to give states as much power as possible (senators were appointed, not directly voted until the XVII Amendment of 1912. And the popular vote was not binding on the electoral votes until reforms of 1972). The drafters knew some people would live on military property, and some in territories not yet states.

Go here only if you care about the difference. Skip the first 45 seconds, it is just wussy, unmanly mood music.
Listen close, pilgrim, when the Duke appears. He'll tell ya all ya need to know.

day when he brought it up...I guess the fake left the Vicks at home, or it stopped working, and he had to wait for the order of bear mace to arrive...

Here's an analogy for Glenn's analogy....If the republican party are supposed to be "mommy and daddy", then who on earth would WANT to "come home" to find that their childhood home has been burned to the ground, and mommy and daddy have been frog-marched away in handcuffs for abuse, neglect, arson and writing bad checks? Anyways, back in the seventies, wasn't Beck an alcoholic blow monkey? Makes sense if you think about it....the only people who long for reliving the "Reagan" decade seem to be the ones who can't remember much of it to begin with.

Conservatives love to pull this argument out of their asses (see also: "the good old days"). The real translation is "It was better way back when - women, minorities, and homos knew their place. We want that back, goddammit!".

Word.

)O(

They are a minority. Now the "minorities" they hate, will hate them back with just as much ferver. They can't complain when that happens.

Does he cry in bed when he has to turn himself over to his mate?

Not half as much much as his mate does. She has to see Glenn Beck in the middle of the night.

he remembered to put the Vicks on the nightstand, where he can reach it.

Onetime I grabbed it thinking to was straight Vasoline.

A mistake I guarantee you will make only once.

Ow!

that's gonna make me cry now

DARN THEM!!!!

DARN DARN DARN!!!!

Oh wait...NIXON WENT TO CHINA...

Why not google it?

Try "Nixon goes to China".

under his eyes to make him cry. I've seen the video of them applying it for his promo shoots....

You should see the tears flow when he puts BenGay up his ass...

they did a story here about it a few weeks ago

but thanks for the link. A brighter man would have made sure this wasn't taped.

Really? This is what the Beckster thinks of as simpler times? Terrible commercials designed to make Americans think they'll feel better by taking Kodak pictures of one another having a Coke and a smile?

What utter, utter mindless drek.

And Glenn, you should have at least opened that book about George Washington, but I guess there wasn't time what with searching You Tube for sappy 70's and 80's commercials.

plop plop fizz fizz.

Take a puff, it's springtime.

Tired eh? Beck needs to know just how tired I am. At least he gets to live like a king and can afford good health care. I bet he and every single member of his family have the best possibe health care available. He's a fraud, and I am TIRED of his sick, instigating a@@!!

I get a kick out of how wingnuttery's top three princes of hate - Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck - are all college dropouts.

Chumps.

)O(

Meanwhile I'm a college graduate with honors, and Air Force veteran (no war though), and I make dirty jokes on blogs that allow them.

I'm not sure, but I may've been banned by Media Matters.

"when the tough gets going" mean? As usual Beck's whining does contain a half kernel of truth. He does often ask us to consider things that sound insane.

I don't get a player on my work computer, so I'm not sure if this was the one where Beck shrieks about people who go to college for so long and don't work in what he called the real world or get what he called a real job. This coming from a former disc jockey turned talk show host. He's paid to talk. What is this "real work" that the cryin' free-baser has ever done?

)O(

Sphincter spelunker.

a coke addled comedian that sees his schtick as more halarious than it actaully is. He's just carrying over his tired old morning drive radio circus from the 80's, i.e. boiling frogs in pots.

He believes nothing of what he is saying. His oral dissentary puts food on the table, a mazeratti in the driveway and a few lines of coke on his mirror every night.

Saddly the folks at home in the trailer park don't catch the joke and get all fired up when he starts one of his blubber fests.

Glenn Beck is in it for Glenn Beck .... his loyalties are arranged around Twenty's, Fifty's and Hundred's.

Sheesh...this moron, (I mean mormon...too many "m's" in the name) wants to "return"....Hey, first-off get rid of the "birth control pill", that'll start your "return". Turn off your TV...hey, moron, you're talkin' the 40's...don't mix it up. Pay off your Communist Chinese bill Bush borrowed for your wars. Make your own cars and quit relying on the Japs...And get jounalism back and get Beck, the cry baby off the air....That's a start...Then, let's work on the drugs the Mafia brings into this country Beck...Hey, Beck, you can't do that you and McCain are supported by the mob....what a piece of shit you are. And what's worse is all your audience has A.D.D.

Tell the truth Beckerwood...that'll kill ya! Return to the Fairness Doctrine. Make Flush, Scannity, O'meily do the same. No opinions. Just the "facts" mam.....

The vap-o-rub trick has been pointed out before. But in this clip, I'm pretty sure you can see him rubbing it on when he touches his nose. A bit later, he starts crying. Also, at points he seems to pause in order to give the vapor enough time to have effect.

The crybaby lunatic, Beck, proves daily that he had a mental breakdown, but is still running the Reslug party along with the Lard-Ass, racist pig, Limp-Dick Blimpaugh.

Wow

Anyone else find it hilarious that Beck uses a commercial with a CANADIAN singer (Paul Anka) in his little nostalgic sobfest for the lamented days gone by when REAL America existed?

I also thought his bit about Rockefeller was pretty funny, considering that without Rockefeller, Alcoholics Anonymous would not exist. Rockefeller supported the founders of AA -- paying their mortgages and living expenses -- while they got their little pyramid scheme off the ground.

As a "recovering addict," doesn't Beck owe his life to Rockefeller?

Idunno why, but the observation people on all sides always make that goes, "can you imagine how they would react if we did that?!" makes me cringe a little every time I see it. I think it's probably because... well, of course... But whenever I hear about Beck bawling on TV I think, jeez, what if a woman did that all the time? Suppose Rachel Maddow was crying all the damn time. I remember back when people used to say that it would be dangerous to trust a woman in a powerful position, because she'd get all jabby with the Big Button once a month. Not that he'd ever do it, but I wonder if anyone would make the same observation if Beck ever ran for office.

for a substance abuser to weep at odd times. A fried brain is a strange thing.

Mr. Beck will end up in one of four places - prison, a mental hospital, an early grave or a recovery program. He's supposedly tried the last and graduated. It must have been one of those celebrity spin-dries favored by the Hollywood crowd.

Walking about panhandling in the Rite-Aid parking lot.

For someone who has a predisposition for weeping at random times, it's remarkable that he would just happen to randomly weep when the camera's on him, between commercial breaks.

I just flashed on what a hoot it would be if he ended up on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew".

Remember back when, when CEOs made 40X what their employees did? And we had real regulations on banks and investment firms, pension plans, and actual worker's rights?

I remember. And I also remember that wasn't good enough for Republicans, Wall St. or the people who run the banks and the Fed. No, they had to stack the deck in DC to do whatever it took to steal those good ol' days from us and stick it right in their greedy fucking pockets.

So if these clowns like Beck over at Fox News want move our country in the right direction, they need to wake up and realize they need to fight their own party to do it, not only Democrats.

Take that metaphor and shove it.

... been institutionalized?

He's a genuine threat to himself and others.

BID

In 2000 the country elected (allegedly) Bush and Cheney, an alcoholic dry drunk sociopath and a pathological liar with 2 drunk driving convictions........
didn't work out so well.

Hard too believe there are Americans who STILL don't get it.

If a politician offered to take us back to the "good old days" of limited technological advancement, lack of cleaner air and water, institutionalized racism and segregation, sexism, greater ignorance, poverty and disease I'd be like "Aw gee mister that'd be swell."

I feel like I'm peering into the basement of a middle-aged depressed man who's getting nostalgic over effing commercials from his childhood. What's Beck do on a Saturday night, jerk off while sobbing to records of the Kingston Trio?

More burnt offerings from FOX Theatre huh?

Beck got this schtick off of an old TV movie about a guy who goes crazy on the air. Bad movie then. Bad movie now.

Capin' Murdoch likes what he $ees though... har Har.

the name of that movie was Network and it was a fabulous movie. The character's name was Howard Beal, but if Beck is trying to imitate him, he's doing a lousy job. Beal actually pleaded with people to stop watching t.v., saying "You'll never get any truth out of [television]." I doubt we'll ever hear Beck say that.

I wonder how hard the person sitting under Glenns desk has to squeeze on his testicles with a pair of pliers in order for the tears to start to flow.....

That would require a very tiny set of pliers.

Dunn's statement that her favorite philosophers were Mao and Mother Theresa was clearly sarcastic. How is it that so many people are tone-deaf enough to take her statement literally? If Dunn is guilty of anything, it's that she is good at telling a deadpan joke in a world where people need humor explained to them. Does anyone with any sense actually believe that Mao and Mother Theresa are her favorite philosophers? GIVE ME A BREAK!

Moreover, her "quote" from Mao was more of an anecdote concerning perseverance despite long odds and popular opinion that you will fail. Hardly communist or threatening in any way. This is just another manufactured scandal du jour from Fox. If they're so worried about China, let Murdoch's Sky TV stop self-censoring about human rights in China as part of a deal with the Chinese authorities. When was the last time Beck gave an outraged report about that REAL issue -- one which actually effects the lives of hundreds of millions of people.

My favorite philosophers are Attila the Hun and Mahatma Gandhi. Now let me tell you a little anecdote about persevering against long odds. When Attila was just a little Hun, he told everyone that one day he would rule Asia with an iron fist. They all laughed at him...

and so on ...

Snorting Vick's Vapor Rub causes the addict to go into a stupor state of nostalgia for a time that never existed identified by signs of rambling, disjointed speech and crying jags.

So let me get this straight...

White house communications director goes out and says her favorite philosopher is Chairman Mao.

WHAT A TOTAL IDIOT!!

Why is she still there....??

Maybe she can go back to whence she came...

I've read elsewhere that conservatives, including Bush, Mccain, Rove, and Gingrich has/have recommended his writings. I don't know a damned thing about him....so, I'm off to educate myself.....

Has Glenn, the man who loves his country, ever ventured into the communities of the people who revere him? Has he performed ANY community service? What charities has he contributed to? What has he done for them other than sit in a nice comfortable studio, while collecting millions, reminding them just how f**** their lives are?

oh wait not really.

Well, he does make me feel better about the country I am living in. Before horrible sites like this remind me of cruel reality, that we essentially have a (half) black version of Clinton. Triangulation, Welfare Reform, Nafta, DOMA...anyone?

I like the Glenn Beck reality where we are ruled by socialists who have seized the banking industry, to be run in the interests of the proletariat, and are ramming through congress a European style welfare state.

I like to watch Glenn Beck for the same reason I watch Evangelists on TV. They are really entertaining lot. Better than the comedy channel

This has got to be the most retarded, thoroughly dishonest thread in the entire history of Crooks and Liars. The denial and self delusion here is gargantuan. It's about as perfect an illustration of George Orwell's wisdom about group self delusion as one could ever hope to find (though why anyone would hope to find anything so disgusting remains an open question). You people make me sick and ashamed to be a liberal.

Dunn: And then the third lesson and tip actually come from two of my favorite political philosophers, Mao Zedong and Mother Teresa -- not often coupled with each together, but the two people that I turn to most to basically deliver a simple point, which is, you're going to make choices. You're going to challenge. You're going to say, "Why not?" You're going to figure out how to do things that have never been done before. But here's the deal: These are your choices. They are no one else's.

In 1947, when Mao Zedong was being challenged within his own party on his plan to basically take China over, Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalist Chinese held the cities, they had the army, they had the air force, they had everything on their side. And people said, "How can you win? How can you do this? How can you do this against all of the odds against you?" And Mao Zedong said, you know, "You fight your war, and I'll fight mine." And think about that for a second.

There is no hint of sarcasm or irony. She called Mao one of her "favorite political philosophers" w/o the barest hint of qualification. There is absolutely nothing here to indicate that she was anything but sincere.

Mao Zedong was one of the bloodiest dictators in history. He killed between 40 and 70 million of his own peopele. He espoused a political philosophy that is regarded by almost everyone as a spectacular failure. People were imprisioned, tortured and killed just for not agreeing with him. And the effing WHITE HOUSE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR calls him one of her "favorite political philosophers"? I literally want to scream. Paredon my language but how could anyone be that fucking stupid? She just helped validate Beck's crackpot claim that Obama is a secret communist.

And your response it to run around making fun of Beck for being a jerk and making excuses for Dunn while indulging in nakedly Orwellian descriptions of Mao?

Bottom line: Beck's a reactionary crackpot but Dunn said something that clearly validated his world view. Deal with it.

The magnitude of my disgust with you people right now really is beyond words. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

Goodness me, you've said your piece several times already. I happen to agree that Dunn's comment was stupid. But just because people here are not falling over themselves to agree with you does not mean they merit your "disgust". Please get a sense of perspective.
