From CNN:

(CNN) -- Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, a longtime fixture on the House subcommittee that oversees Pentagon spending, has died following complications from gallbladder surgery, according to his office. He was 77.

The veteran Democratic congressman recently underwent scheduled laparoscopic surgery to remove his gallbladder.

Murtha was hospitalized in December and had to postpone a hearing with Defense Secretary Robert Gates on the administration's strategy in Afghanistan. The congressman returned to work after a few days in the hospital and helped oversee final passage of the 2010 defense appropriations bill.

Murtha represented Pennsylvania's 12th congressional district in the House since 1974, making him the chamber's eighth most senior member. According to his biography on the House Web site, Murtha was the first Vietnam War combat veteran elected to Congress.

He was considered one of "the kings of pork" on Capitol Hill by taxpayer watchdog groups for requesting tens of millions of dollars in earmarks.

On his House Web site, Murtha strongly defended earmarks, saying, "I believe that elected representatives of the people understand their constituents and districts best." Supporters said his efforts have helped bring thousands of jobs to western Pennsylvania.

Other controversies dogged Murtha's career. Critics alleged he steered Pentagon contracts to businesses that hired his brother as a lobbyist, but Murtha insisted his brother was treated like everyone else.

The Fox anchors were restrained this morning in announcing the news. The right wingers have had Murtha in their sights for a long time. So you can count on the "opinion" crew to be licking its chops over the prospects of a Republican taking Murtha's seat this fall. Start your stopwatches.

(UPDATE: John Amato will be appearing on the Randi Rhodes Show at 1:35 pm PST to talk about this and other topics)

A fine man who served his country well.

Republicans are liars and simply cannot be trusted.

(CBS) Congressman Jack Murtha was one of the most influential powerbrokers in Washington.
According to an estimate by Taxpayers for Common Sense, he's steered more than $600 million in earmarks to his Pennsylvania district in the past four years and $2 billion since 1992. But what's been good for Murtha and his district is not always good for taxpayers.
Top defense lobbyists recently flocked to a high-priced fundraiser at the Ritz in Virginia, all for Congressman John Murtha, the head of the House committee on military spending. In 2009, Murtha gave out nearly $160 million dollars in earmarks -- grants of money without the normal public review.
“Every private entity that received an earmark from Rep. Murtha gave him a contribution. A campaign contribution,” Ryan Alexander for Taxpayers for Common Sense told CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson.
Murtha helped set up the non-profit Concurrent Technologies in his hometown of Johnstown, Pa. Among the things they do is help others get federal money. They should know, they get $200 million in federal grants each year.
Murtha alone doled out nearly $12 million in earmarks to Concurrent this year. Concurrent pays big bucks to PMA, a lobby firm started by a former Murtha committee staffer. Both and Concurrent employees give generously to Murtha's campaigns.
More mysterious is Murtha's million-dollar earmark to the "The Center for Instrumented Critical Infrastructure."
“We don’t even know if it even exists,” says anti-earmark Congressman Jeff Flake (R-AZ).
Back in July 2007, Flake had questions when he found no record of the Center. Murtha wasn’t there, so a colleague spoke for him.
The response to the question of whether the Center actually exists came from Congressman Pete Visclosky, D-Ind.: “At this time I do not know. But if it does not exist, the money cannot go to it.”
Congressman Murtha wouldn't tell CBS News if the Center exists... or agree to an interview.
His most notorious project is the government agency that the government doesn't want: The National Drug Intelligence Center, also in Murtha's hometown. Every year the White House tries to close it because they already have a Drug Intelligence Center. But Murtha keeps the duplicate open using half-a-billion dollars in earmarks.
“You want to drive a stake through its heart but you can’t,” says Leslie Paige for Citizens Against Government Waste. “Because Congressman Murtha continues to put this in.”
Murtha's power plays are no surprise to those who've followed him since the 1980s bribery scandal known as ABSCAM. An undercover tape shows him bragging about his power, saying, “I’ve got as much influence in that goddamned Congress with the leadership and the White House as anyone in Congress... I know the right people and I know the system.”
Three decades later, Murtha not only knows the system; he's mastered it.

not the gamer. Did anyone ever here Murtha speak out publicly against earmarks? If he did I can't find it. For now I'll reserve criticism for the hypocrites who damn earmarks and decorate bills like a Christmas tree with them. I'm sure they know who they are.

I'll start with that, and finish with the fact that Murtha may have started out OK (great soldier), but he finished as a crooked, pork-barrel politician.

I thought the same thing! Then the screen shot of Faux in the background further added to the confusion!

Mendoza didn't let that go by. He took a pretty good swing. In fact, he connected.

Nice. You you can always count on Republicans to class it up.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

R.I.P. Congressman.

Shall the morons replace him with a republican, because the DLC gave them no other choice? Fox cannot wait to find out.

If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

Enjoy the comments at FoxNews. It's stuff like that they make me lose faith in the decency of people.

So instead of posting the article and a few words about the man, you choose to hypothesize about how well it will go over at Fox News. You stay classy, Dave.

ricky's picture

but move forward, Mr. Piltoff.

Murtha would be pretty diffcult to do justice in a few words.
Incredibly hard to characterize.

I think maybe we could save the moving forward for a post that isn't 'BREAKING NEWS JACK MURTHA DEAD'

But at least they edited in a plug for John Amato on the radio.

RIP

ReInsertPlug?

Plugs are OK with me. Gratuitous use of all opportunities to post a dig at FOX should be a requirement here.

Murtha was a fiery Democrat but he was also a crook. I realize it's not polite to make ill of the dead but since this is a political forum, let's not be so PC. (I'm sure if Boehner passed not many of you would be praising his legacy).
Representative John P. Murtha (D-PA) was a nineteen-term member of Congress, representing Pennsylvania’s 12th congressional district. Rep. Murtha chaired the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee. Rep. Murtha’s ethics issues and violations stemmed from his ties to the PMA Group, a now defunct lobbying firm under federal investigation; his ties to Kuchera Industries, a defense contractor under federal investigation; his ties to defense executives and former military personnel convicted of skimming money from government contracts; actions he may have taken to benefit his brother’s lobbying clients; and his chief of staff’s threats to a political opponent.
Since 1998, Rep. Murtha has accepted $2,378,552 from PMA Group employees and clients of the firm, making him the biggest recipient of contributions from the firm.

He wanted to outlaw flag burning, but not unethical conduct.
He came out against Iraq, but was caught up in Abscam. He was pro-union and pro-gun. He cannot be easily characterized.

Murtha was a crook, largely for his constituents. Boehner is a crook, full time for himself. Murtha a bruise apple, Boner an apple rotten to the core.

This man was one of the first members of congress to tell Bush & co. to eat shit regarding those illegal wars.

and I respected him for that.

May he rest in peace. My condolences to the Murtha family.

The last I heard, he was doing fine. He was a great servant to Americans through his military as well. RIP JM.

PS: Why is Jeanne Schmidt allowed to drool her ignorance against one of our own who passed? That is pathetic!

I feel for his family and friends who are now hurting.

Watching you fight against the War in Iraq, reminded me of my father.Raised an Air Force brat(dad put in 26 yr) came of age during the Viet Nam Disaster,in the lottery for the draft.A week before the numbers were pulled,my dad sat me down and we talked. He said"This war is a lie,I don't want you in it.If you get a bad number, there is only two choices that I see you got.Prison or going to Canada. Here are the names and addresses of friends of mine in Ontario Canada.I have already talked to them, you are more than welcome. I've got money your mom doesn't know about. We can visit you there. The Army already has your brother,I don't want to lose you too.Hopefully, you get a high enough number,if not you have to decide for yourself what you're gonna do.We love you and this Nation, but this is not our fight......."I got a high enough no. and lost three friends in country, and my best friend to heroin addiction he got over there, here. I loved Johns passion, reminded me of my dad.Feels like I lost my dad, again.

but to comment, as I've done before numerous times, it's not 'his' seat nor was it ever his seat. whenever anyone says its the Dems seat or the GOPs seat, it's just ridiculous. more likely its the people's seat or a mere congressional seat. neither political party owns the seat. just because one person of one party may occupy the seat for awhile it doesnt become 'theirs'. all this sort of language accomplishes nothing but dividing us further. i mean, sheesh.

There is one thing you can say about Rep Murtha, he served his country as a Marine in uniform and during a time of war!
Fox News is full of chickenhawks, both men and women alike! There's no excuse for anyone not serving in the military today, unless your a retard or physically unable to! Boy o' boy do they know how to wave the flag at Fox, but when it comes time to put-up or shut-up, they shut up!
Has any of them ever served in the military? With the exception of North, who in the long sold his country out, every single one of are chickenhawks!
Take Care Col.Murtha,I got your back - Semper-Fi!

I'm not ignoring Mr. Murtha's problems with ethics and earmarks, but he did have honorable service as a Marine and won my admiration for his ass-busting of Bush's Iraq invasion.

That said....from a Mekong sailor, thanks for your Vietnam service, buddy. Rest In Peace, you served your time in hell.

Democratic Party progressive, Vietnam veteran and proud Union member for 41 years

It says Murtha was a Repub. Oops!

From 0:47 until 1:57, I love how they started with essentially "Iran tells the IAEA they will be enriching uranium for fuel" and essentially ended with "Iran will have nuclear weapons by next year."

Oh Fox, you keep f*ckin' that chicken.
