Leave it to Pitchfork Pat Buchanan to take a seemingly rational discussion of America's relationship with Mexico on Andrea Mitchell's MSNBC show this morning and turn it into a Latino-bashing bigotfest:

Buchanan: Mexico is the greatest foreign-policy crisis I think America faces in the next 20-30 years. Who is gonna care, Andrea, thirty years from now whether a Sunni or a Shi'a is in Baghdad, or who's ruling in Kabul? We're going to have 135 million Hispanics living in the United States by 2050, heavily concentrated in the Southwest. The question is whether we're going to survive as a country.

Rrrrrright. I gather he's been listening to Glenn Beck.

Actually, this is hardly the first time such a pronouncement has come out of Buchanan's mouth. Indeed, his racism has become so open that it remains Exhibit A in calling BS on the right-wing claim that liberal political correctness has driven all such sentiments from the public square.

It's almost like he's the crazy Bircherite uncle no one wants to talk to at the family picnic, because you know he's just going to burst out eventually with some rude display of bigotry. And sure enough ...

its more a case of... Will Pat fit into a matchbox, prob yes.

what the illegals are doing for cheap labor, fantastic. what they are doing to our culture is another story, and i don't think it's for the better.

you'll find most of the people he's referring to are not illegals but Americans of Hispanic decent. If you've got a problem with their culture it's your problem not theirs.

Multi Cultural lifestyle clashes are quite common if not the common root cause of this conflict.

I live around and used to work with Hispanics, They are a mix of central America and Mexican peoples, PLUS people who were born in the SW of the US, immigrants or families who always lived there. And guess what their culture is mostly western, but a mix European/American/Indian. Spanglish (a mix of spanish and english) is the language, yes they tend to speak spanglish when not in mixed company, but english when they are.

And if you haven't noticed America is embracing Hispanic culture with a vengeance, food and other stuff is very popular with non Hispanics.

And btw Hispanic also embraces the Native American section of the SW US, they are a mixed lot down there culture wise. A friend of mine was born in Mexico, but he could make a fortune in Hollywood in the movies as an Apache war chief.

The anti immigration rhetoric of the right wing is little more than thinly guised racial hatred of Latinos.
Michael Savage routinely calls Latinos 'sub human' and 'mud people'.Thats sounds racist to me...

White Republicans are terrified that the day will come when white people will no longer be the majority in this country- For them, to be an American is to be white- and they don't think it's possible for anyone-but white people-to be Americans.

They and classic Hollywood forget that half the defenders of the Alamo and fighters for Texan independence were Hispanic and Native Americans.

Strange that they don't show this in Alamo movies or on most Alamo websites/books.

The people in the Alamo fighting for "independence" were mostly Gringos.

Most of them (if any) weren't even Mexican to boot.

In fact, El Alamo is the quintessential American MO regarding the "liberation" of other people's lands.

The population of Texas was mostly Texians (immigrants from the US), but there was a small but substantial and influential (read wealthy) population of Tejanos (Hispanic Mexicans living in the northern Texas state). Both of these groups revolted against the Mexican government because of problems with the Mexican government - not because they wanted to join the US. They, in fact, became their own independent Republic and is one of the only states that is granted the right to succeed from the United States based on a vote by its citizens.

If this was the typical American MO of "liberation" than what happened to all the Nahuatl speaking people groups like the Coahuiltecans and Sanans that were there before the Mexican Spaniards?

Here's a little info on Tejanos during the Texas Revolution:

http://bexargenealogy.com/tejanos.html

Among the fifty-six men who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836, three were Hispanic: two Tejanos, José Antonio Navarro and José Francisco Ruiz, and the new Republic's first Vice President, Lorenzo de Zavala.

While seven Tejanos fought and died along side Anglo-Americans at the Battle of the Alamo, men from San Antonio rode on with Juan Seguín and Manuel Flores and figured prominently in the victory at the Battle of San Jacinto. Captain Juan Seguin commanded these brave native Tejanos as members of the Second Regiment of Texas Volunteers. One of the first Texans to reenter San Antonio after San Jacinto was Colonel Seguin. He took possession of the city on June 4, 1836. He had been named military commander and provisional mayor of San Antonio.

José Antonio Menchaca, a third generation Bexareño and a Tejano army officer, who’s family received a grant from the Spanish Crown in 1762 was a true Texas patriot throughout his life. He fought in the battle of San Jacinto, served several terms as alderman, and participated in the defense of San Antonio when General Adrián Woll (of French/Belgian origin) led a Mexican army into Texas in September 1842.

During the Republic of Texas only four Tejanos (from the Bexar District) succeeded in gaining election to the Texas Congress: José Antonio Navarro, José Francisco Ruiz, Juan Seguín and Rafael de la Garza.

Another Bexareño , Juan Martín de Veramendi the son of Fernando Veramendi, was elected vice governor of Coahuila and Texas in 1830, his daughter, Ursula María de Veramendi, married James Bowie.

DId you even read the post you linked at?

LOL...

Remember about 2 years back when Bill O'Reilly accused liberals of being out to tear down the white Christian male power structure? Well, if Bill-O and Pat Buchanan are typical samples from that power structure, it sure explains a lot of things, like gender gap.

These guys think that they literally have a God-given right to be in charge. It's not just that they're afraid of losing their "rightful place". They seem to sincerely believe that civilization will end if they have to share power with women, minorities and gays.

Naturally, this brand of white Christian male believes that "those people" are out to take over, not share. If you treat minorities like crap, you naturally assume that they'll treat you like crap if they gain some power.

Only problem is we're not exactly heading towards divinity at the moment. We have to evolve beyond the cave man mentality first.

We must move from an ego-centric and ethno-centric view to a world and Kosmic view of the planet. Otherwise we're the problem. Me society or we society. Our choice.

Screwtape the Epistemologist.

It took millions of immigrants to build this country and a handful of rich white guys to destroy it.

we built this business the old fashioned way! Slavery!"

and its not funny.

is a complex subject, and I myself have mixed emotions. Living in sourthern california I have seen first hand that the overwhelming influx is a huge problem. Does this mean Lou Dobbs isn't an asshole, of course he is.

From the standpoint of American labor, the illegal immigration is great for business, but also for driving down the wages of us citizens.

And there is the cultural component. I greatly respect the first generation that comes here to work, no matter how shitty the job. But once in the barrio, it is the 2nd generation that creates the problem. The ideal they glammorize is incredibly sad. Going to jail is a GOOD thing. Violence is not just tolerated but glammorized.

I think having such a large undocumented influx from any one particular group is a bad thing, it needs to be controlled. Does that mean concentration camps and machine guns on the borde? No. But it is naive to think we shouldn't have a better grip on our border.

So it seems to me that Mexicans have every right to be there...

It becomes destructive for mexican-american's too to have the undocumented cheap labor. Don't they as citizen's have a right to higher wages too? I'm Irish, and fully aware of the history, I am an American first. If there was a large Irish undocumented influx driving down our wages, then I would say that too needs to be controlled.

Keeping in mind us Irish came through Ellis Island and places like it, as did a lot of Asians and other Europeans. I know people from all over trying like hell to gain legal entry, while one group just pours across undocumented.

As for the whole well it was owned by mexico first thing, spain jacked it from the indians. The American Indian is a great reason to keep in mind what happens when you don't keep an eye on your borders.

All i'm saying is, to talk about the subject in such black and white terms is disingenuous and dosent' serve the debate well. I'm not saying kick em all out like the nativist's, just have a rational and fair policy concerning all involved, and deprive facist company's of cheap labor.

We do need to have controls, but unlike the ones we have. Many European countries have all sorts of guest worker programs and visa systems for guest workers.

I don't see a problem with legalizing what is already happening.

What is it they say, "A great leader sees which direction the crowd is going and runs out in front and says, "Follow Me!"

So you think that we should just "give back" California? Sure it used to be part of Mexico....but it isn't any more. So with that logic we should just dismantle our gov't and our country and give it all back to the native Americans and emigrate back to Europe and hope they are accepting American refugees.

So long USA...it was good while it lasted.

Send all the Europeans home.

There are big boats leaving tonight. Everybody be on them.

South Florida...we do not have many Mexicans but we we do have many South Americans and Cubans...they are def the majority....I COMPLETELY understand what you are conveying.

Hispanic cuisine alone should stand as their Price of Admission into American society. As for the various Hispanic social and familial cultures I've seen plenty worse, and as a former teacher I've found far more Hispanic families, on average, are concerned about their children doing well in school than 'American' homogenized families.

Besides, adding new features to our national culture is NEVER bad, we become more agile and able to react in better ways. It's the very reason why the US with it's multitude of cultures has done so well compared to the homogeneous cultures of Asian and the separate European states.

As a current teacher, I agree whole-heartedly. I find Hispanic families inordinately willing to work with me on behalf of their kids' educational and behavioral needs.

Perhaps not unlike other, earlier immigrant groups, first-generation adult immigrants from impoverished backgrounds--legal or not--know what it's like not to have advantages. Most know how important an education is and want their children to have advantages that they didn't or don't.

I'd hazard to guess that the overwhelming number of Hispanic parents, just from having worked with so many, care deeply about how their kids are doing. Not all, of course, but no blanket statement is ever true. On the whole, though, I feel fortunate when I get to work with Hispanic families because *they want to work with the school* to help their kids.

Buchanan has clearly never volunteered in a public school. He probably shouldn't be allowed near one, though, given his level of bigotry-driven ignorance.

well, for one thing, you would not have all the
inexpensive food in the markets. and then you should
consider all the work most white people think they
are too good to do.....are you willing to work for
less than minimum wage under a boss that does not
care how badly they treat you? think about it.

Well the millions of native people we murdered when we stole this country didn't survive either. Looks like their Karma is about to run over your dogma, Pat. Rrrrruf. Gee, the stupid old white dimwits are dying out. What a shame. BTW I'm what you call white. But not a dimwit.
I remain, your humble servant, in Christ,
Screwtape the Epistemologist.

I admire about the US is that the political campaigns of tools like Buchanan inevitably go nowhere. At a very fundamental level most Americans seem to have an acute sense of bullshit.

streets here. Americans want to kick back and have a beer at the end of the day, or a white wine they don't want to go out "take out" the robber barons who are stealing us blind.

There is a fun front page diary on DailyKos regarding Pat and his excellent statement. The best part are the comments in languages other than the one that Pat considers correct.

Lookeeee over............HERE! BROWN PEOPLE!!!

recognize this country anymore. It's like the 50's all over only we're heading down this time not up.

The common people know this, we all go to work and then go home and have a beer.

Its stupid fcuks like PB & the haters that want to keep us divided for some reason.

Is there an ulterior motive they like everybody pigeon holed and hating everybody else !?

Holocaust deniar Pat Buchanan has a history of painting non Christians, and non caucasians as being inferior...

A right wing Republican who is a bigot...how rare!

That Andrea Mitchell told him a thing or two!

has some xplaining' to do alright. Like, where's your Husband hiding out these days?

He's inflated the Census Bureau numbers by about 30%.

http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/...

To people like Buchanan, the US didn't need any more cultural diversity after their parents/grandparents emigrated over.

the population of the United States will rise to 438 million in 2050.

Yeah, Pat BUCHANAN, is probably Scots-Irish and his family probably emigrated via Ellis island and were part of those dirty stinking Irish that were ruining America for all us good Germans and Brits. Of course, the Germans and Brits ruined it for the French and Dutch, and the French and Dutch ruined it for the Native Americans, and the Native Americans ruined it for all the Happy Fun Creatures of the Woods.

...I read way back during the 1970s, projections that by the middle of the 21st century, the majority of American citizens would be Hispanic, so I'm not sure why Pat Buchanan is so surprised at this turn of events!

Anyway David, you're right! He IS a bigot and why MSNBC even allows him to appear on their network anymore is beyond me. Especially Chris Matthews. Whenever Pat is a guest with another guest analyst, Chris only seems to want to listen to Pat and he rarely even lets the other analyst finish a sentence, let alone a thought!

If I were in a position to be invited on "Hardball" - which I'm not - I'd make darn sure that Pat Buchanan wouldn't be the other "analyst". If Pat was going to be there, I'd decline and I'd tell Chris that Pat belongs on Fox News instead of MSNBC because he's sounding an awful lot like Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh lately!

and a cure for cancer, flying cars, riches, health and wealth for all . .

What happened?

Pienso Patricio no habla Español. Tambien pienso es mejor si Patricio estudia Español. Jejejejjejeeee

Si, pero yo creo que eso vas a ser muy dificil para el mente chiquitito de Patricio... ;)

all these debts. As in hard labor.

I have been asking MSNBC for YEARS to make Pat go away..

The best thing for Pat is to be a full-timer with LouLou Dobbs over at CNN and then Beck will come back..OR CNN and Fixed news will merge (It's REAL hard to tell them apart anymore)....Then it can be all racism and hate - all the time..

It hard to understand how MSNBC management continues to stomach this fool...

On their network. He's the stand-in for all the asshats on Fox and CNN. At least Pat is mostly courteous IRL. I definitely despise what he thinks, but I LOVE it when he's on MSNBC anywhere with Rachel Madow, she knows how to play Pat like a fiddle. It warms the cockles of my heart watching Rachel work Pat over. translation to netspeak = I can has major LULZ from Rachel PWNing Pat.

The culture didn't survive the influx of Europeans in the 1600s.

Pat Buchanan: We're going to have 135 million Hispanics living in the United States by 2050, heavily concentrated in the Southwest.

Pat, when Uncle Sam STOLE that part of Old Mexico, don't ya think maybe he shoulda realized it was going to be full of Mexicans?

Or don't you do history, Pat?

but not really. It's not anyone's land, yours mine or anyone else's. Yet any modern "nation", self-proclaimed or otherwise, depends on some kind of rule of law, "migrations" or not. All nations in the world are nothing but "renters" of a small portion of the planet created to provide a sense of social stability for people. Tribal warfare and bloodshed used to be much more commonplace than it is these days, ("white" Europe included). We have all crawled out of a bloody past to where we are now. This has largely abated in no small part due to the establishment of law enforcement and borders, beginning in ancient China, the cradle of advanced modern civilization. You want the whole world to be like the Sunnis and Shias forever at each others throats? That is what a return to the "traditional indigenous past" and "eradication of borders" will get you.

who can't comprehend beyond the jr. high level use pictures to represent their emotions.

it is not wether or not the nation will survive having 135 million hispanics.

But more importantly, wether or not our society can survive more that 1 Pat Buchanan...

We'd need another million immigrants to pick his food, though. Talk about putting a strain on the system.

The big question is can America survive without that many? Small and Medium size business has relyed on hard working hispanics for less money for years

fat burners on sale

One thing old doucheface Buchanan doesn't have to concern himself is anything too far down the road. He's on his last leg and won't be around to see it. He's got one foot in the grave and the other slipping badly on Alzheimer's meds.

the undocumented hispanic immigrants definitely contribute to several costs to u.s. tax payers. one of interest to me is the "cheap labor" that has been let into the country illegally for years. most of these hard workingunder paid people have NO healthCare insurance and/or auto. insurance. they use the healthCare system but often can't pay the bill(s). this cost is passed on to the paying healthCare pool.....essentially a hidden tax.

Many also work illegally under false Social Security numbers and pay Social Security and MediCare taxes that they'll never be able to use.

It drives me NUTS when a freaktard cries about the illegal immigrants stealing all of our essential services for "free".

)O(

But they also send their kids to school funded by local taxes, especially property, have larger familes which off-set the taxes they may pay, and any influx of new people means quantity demand for homes causes the costs for the houses and apartments to go up, which they often need help subsidizing by, you guess it, tax paid government programs. And because they tend to be uninsured and underinsured, have habits of smoking, drinking and eating that most Americans have tended to abandon, they need medical care and get them from emergency rooms, again, at taxpayers expense. And emergency care is always more expensive than routine check-ups.

Addtionally, more an more the coyotes who bring them to the U.S. for high prices are part of the drug cartels. And if they make it successfully, and get a job, much of their income goes back to family in Mexico, so it's out of the US money stream, unless they buy American in Mexico.

They get all their medical care for free? I live in the Phoenix Area of AZ - I grew up here, and let me tell you, the illegals are not MOBBING our Emergency Rooms. Most of them seem to go to the Urgent Care centers and pay in cash, or the Free Clinics.

Sure the government spends money on them, but I'd wager large money that if someone did a comprehensive report on the cost of an illegal immigrant vs. how much they give back into the system via SS tax and Payroll taxes I'd wager that they're either close to zero cost or a net positive.

These people don't want to cause problems, they want to live and thrive and work - and become American citizens if possible. I know a guy who came here illegally as a kid (grade school) and he grew up here slogged through a ton of CRAP jobs for years (he's a year older than me at 32) and finally got enough money to go back to Mexico emigrate here legally and just last year became an American citizen.

From what I know of him and having hung out with his legal and illegal family members at their massive, and awesome weekend BBQs, is that they those who are illegal try to fly low, pay as they go, and keep their noses clean so they can become citizens. As some one else mentioned, the real problems come from the 2nd generation feeling entitled and having a hard go at life.

That's right. And since the illegas are purchasing homes or renting apartments, they're paying property taxes as well ... next.

... have habits of smoking, drinking and eating that most Americans have tended to abandon ...

Do you have any proof of this? Other than what appears to be your Lou Dobbs kinda hatred of "others". When you pull this kinda stuff out of your ass, it's hard to take you seriously.

)O(

If you read my comment I refered to the larger family off-setting any taxes they may pay.

It's obvious all you want to do is argue.

It's amazing to me how many people on a liberal sites fall for the corporate line that all this labor is needed, thus undercutting any serious attempts at unionizing workers.

I'd be all for including the illegals into unions, but then see how long it takes corporations to lose interest in the issue, or panic at the renewed growth of unions with the additional members.

I suppose you only feel you have that right.

Also, I haven't talked a bit about the "corporate line" that the labor is needed. So take your strawman elsewhere.

I just get tired of the anti-immigrant bashing under the argument of how much they are "costing" us because they don't pay taxes, even though they do pay them. If they take more than they are giving, I doubt it is anywhere near what the bashers paint it as. Because they are illegal, most of them try their best to fly under the radar and not bring attention to themselves.

a lot of unionized contractors when they take the jobs Americans WILL do.

it's a good point. the undocumented "cheap labor" often under cuts legal labor. the right wing loves these people that don't realize this is cheating. become legal i have NO
problem with any demographic. trust me i know many don't have healthCare ins. and/or auto ins. on 7-8-9-10 bucks an hour. every region of the country is different. the other point i want to make is that working conditions for undocumented workers can be less than suitable. because these people are undocumented/illegal they're taken
ADvantage of.

Most of the undocumented workers I've met are either single or here without their families. Next?

First, I agree that there are border problems due to illegal immigration. Then make them legit. Nobody has the political will (as much as they're willing to demonize them) to either admit that illegal immigration and migrant workers are economically essential or to clamp down on the companies and individuals hiring them. Well, make them legit. Or just like drugs and prostitution, if you make something illegal, you have to deal with the swirling ball of crime that comes with the underground, unregulated market.

Secondly, I've lived in L.A. most of my adult life and see many more fat white people that fat Latinos. Go to Disneyland any day and take a count. Complete and utter nonsense. I'm white and I've had three family members die in the past couple years, under 50, because of smoking and drinking and weight problems. You're just plain making stuff up.

" have habits of smoking, drinking and eating that most Americans have tended to abandon"

Aaaaah, the irony.

)O(

I was wondering when someone would catch that.

But I do tend to eat healthy, but not enough exercise.

Illegal immigrants generally pay all taxes, and are not able to collect refunds on over-payment of their income tax. That includes property taxes, btw. If you can't figure out why that is, then you really shouldn't comment on this issue because you lack the intellectual chops to do so.

)O(

Talk about lack of substantiation...

what a fucking hypocrite buchanan is.
with the exception of the established
native indian americans, we all immigrated
here. with buchanan's reasoning, the native
americans should kick buchanan's ass and the
rest of us out of the country.

we are a meld of many nations. this is not
a reichwing elite only country. i am glad
we have so many honorable immigrants from
below our southern border. they add a
richness to our society that the fucking
old white bastards depreciate. and this is
coming from an old white guy,me.

)O(

American Indians came from Asia.

from India.

)O(

I suspect you're doing a ha-ha

But I haven't had a drink or a smoke in nearly two weeks.

However, my understanding was they came from Siberia (or at least that's where they crossed the Bering Strait).

Infamous marauder and international rapist Christopher Columbus thought the same shit about Indians...over five hundred years ago.

Indians from India in Spain were known as "Hindustanis"

American Indians come from the alliteration that is "Indio" for the term "In Dio/Dei" Which literally is refers to "the people from/in god" (Which would be the XV century way of saying "People X" or "Specimen X."

It is a common tale that Columbus died thinking that he had discovered India. The Spaniards were most certainly aware that those Islands they had set foot on, where not Hindustan.

I absolutely believe if Mexico collapses into anarchy or civil war that the United States will not survive. It has nothing to do with culture or rascism. This is about our own economic weakness. If these people were white Europeans then I would say the same thing. Shit here is broke. We don't have our shit together enough to handle something like this.

The US would not only survive, it would thrive once we figured out where to put all the extra labor. We'd be able to compete directly with China again.

You really think so??? Mexicans will be happy to be you extra labour? You're assuming you will win, but so far you can't defeat a bunch of "cave dwellers."

The arrogance of some Americans never ceases to amaze me.

If the Mexican government collapses, Mexico will become a US protectorate. And we'd make bank from the arrangement.

Of course, the best thing we could do for the Mexican government is legalize drugs. It effectively confiscate all their money.

"Andrea, thirty years from now whether a Sunni or a Shi'a is in Baghdad, or who's ruling in Kabul..."

This part is true NOW
, nevermind in 30 year when no American will even know where Baghdad or Kabul are. Proving it was a all a "shock and awe" neocon oil-grab. A spectacular show of American military might for the hordes.

I guess what he meant was: 30 years from now it will be much more difficult to make it APPEAR as if it matters whether a Sunni or a Shi'a is in Baghdad. And for once, I agree with the old gas bag.

"In a GQ profile of Pat Buchanan, journalist John Judis asks the presidential candidate his views about teaching creationism in school. 'Look, my view is, I believe God created heaven and earth,' said Buchanan. 'I think this: What ought to be taught as fact is what is known as fact. I don't believe it is demonstrably true that we have descended from apes. I don't believe it. I do not believe all that."
[Leah Garchik, San Francisco Chronicle, 27 November 1995]

Not there's anything he can do about that! Muahahaha!

It just means I'll have to do my part by speeding up my work to have a few mixed Hispanic babies, and help my non-Latino friends learn dribs and drabs of Spanish here and there! ;)

/ snark

Seriously tho, I do find some comfort in knowing that I'll be among the 135 million people fucking up Buchanan's vision of America... ;)

Century. We fucked it up by building all the railroads throughout the southwest US of A. And, my uncles fucked up America by serving in the US military during times of conflict and one of them has the god damned audacity to be buried in a National Military Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, right by all those white people who died serving the US military. And ole cheesesauce himself has earned a college degree, actually 3 of them fuck up that I am.

BTW, if you need any help having a baby, please let me know and I will do my part to help. ;)

They fucked up the country by picking crops all over the Southwest, they fucked up the country when my gr. gr. gr.-grandfather became the first Hispanic in his Texas county to be sheriff, they fucked up the country by serving in every major American war since the Civil, you name it!

And ;)

Them Cholos! F*cking it up since way baaaaaaaack.

I'm glad there are people like Buchanan who will go out on a limb for the people who subsidize his cheap eats, allowing him to pork up at a fraction of the cost.

Here's to the immigrants, who have provided us with this fine feast today. His words may be bitter, but his flesh will be tender and sweet. Salud!

not cannibals! :P

)O(

Mexico does a good job of policing their own southern border, and it would be in their interest to help us by policing their northern borders (our southern.) It's going to take a two-state solution. The drug cartels are buying powerful weapons legally in the US for use in their drug war south of the border, that's claiming a greater and greater number of lives. It's almost like having an Iraq on our doorstep.

Not only will we survive it - but we'll be a better country because of it. Bonus? -- increasingly, Americans will have skin in a delicious variety of cocoas and browns.

Get over it, Wanker.
*

He forgets that Ireland has survived despite the fact 75% of its inhabitants, for generations, have left the country, to migrate the the USA for improved standards of living. The Irish of Ireland never forgot how to procreate.

More importantly, Buchanan fails to recognize that the era of Caucasian migration from Europe(mostly), to the US, is nearly over, after 200 years. Those Caucasians now here are self absorbed, prefer small families, if any, chose materialistic ways of living over the self sacrifice required of parents to raise large families without all the bells and whistles that come with living in velveetaland.

The same cannot be said for people of Spanish heritage, at least for current and "soon to be" generations. Large families are the norm and have been, as it was once for Caucasians. As long as this phenomena continues the USA will increasingly become brown and yellow in color, language and culture. Actually, is that so bad? You have to love the sparkle, the character, the music, the food, and, from my experiences, the work ethic of Spanish speaking people. Even with limited means they find a way to live fully in our race oriented Caucasian society.

Buchanan looks and sounds like every woman's ex-husband.

)O(

Another thing to be considered is a sudden influx of people, no matter their origin, even other states in the US whose economy has soured, causes a strain on the receiving state's existing highway systems, water supplies, and electrical grids that may not have been worked on in decades.

If cars are in poor repair, they add to the pollution, and even if they're clean running, will help drive up the costs of energy.

don't try to be rational they don't want to hear it. your NOT being disrespectful. actually many of the undocumented/illegal workers work in less than par working conditions. often they're taken ADvantage of since they can't/won't say much. employers enjoy that. i still say it's sophisticated slavery.

)O(

They're often cheated of pay with no legal recourse.

I understand some are housed onsite in over crowded vans.

seriously. I'm white, but my family never had slaves, we were crackers who came over just after the days of cowboys and indians - and we just bought up dead land and set up a farm. my family worked their ass off and obeyed the law. but I think we came here illegally, its not like the King of Ireland allowed us to leave..

I mean - its not like you can ask Fidel Castro or Vincente Fox to please release their citizenship so they can move to America - .. so many American families could be viewed as being here "illegally" ..

I've worked a lot of both blue collar and white collar jobs, and I've worked with a lot of Mexicans, and I believe a lot of Mexicans coming to America want to be Americans, and contribute to our great society.

and I think its downright hypocritical for a lot of white Americans to judge any Mexicans for coming here and setting up shop - when they could very well be descendants of illegal aliens themselves.

)O(

Unless your family came here like before the 1171, there was no unique King of Ireland, because the English king was considered the Irish king as well (two seperate titles), starting under King Henry II. In 1801, under King George III, Great Britain included Ireland.

And English kings encouraged emmigration to the new colonies, because they needed colonists. In Australia of course, prisoners were transported there. One of my ancestors was encouraged to move himself and his family from Africa, where he watched his father's estates, to one of the 13 colonies to be its governor, appointed by King George III.

Mexico , India , China , Britain , Germany , Dutch , Korea , Japan and you name the country and they have our jobs...and our border should be CLOSED>>>

People pick and choose what laws they wish to be considered lawful...

Illegal is Illegal... When Bush breaks our laws , he should be prosecuted and when illegal immigrants break the law it should be illegal...

We are not only sending our car manufacturing jobs to Mexico , the Mexicans which can not find work there are coming into this country illegally and not only taking American jobs , but sending their money home while they use our health benefits free...

How can Governor O'Malley of Maryland pass a law to give "Illegal" Immigrants a driver's license.....

The stimulus package where our elected officials are given back money to people which didn't pay taxes or made very little salary ,, just who do you think will be receiving this money from the stimulus program...

And I say H... with this phony bill our government has passed called free trade... The bill should be called getting slave labor for corporations while destroying U.S. for the benefit of Global corporations...

Wages for unskilled and semi-skilled labor are 3-4 times higher in San Diego than Tijuana, and the situation is similar all along the border. As a practical matter, it is impossible to close a border with that kind of wage differential for any sane price.

It is not the least bit racist to be concerned about an influx of any particular ethnic group.

I am not prejudiced against Mexicans. Nor am I prejudiced against Japanese, Chinese, Indians, Latvians, etc. But it is people from those other non-border groups who are made to wait in line, sometimes forever, while their Mexican counterparts are allowed to simply move across the border and become citizens without a wait.

This is simply unfair. There should be immigration into the USA. LOTS OF IT. But that immigration should be fair to all ethnic groups.

)O(

But being of Scottish decent I HATE the Irish.

Vamos a sobrevivir con cien tricenta y cinco million de los Hispanicos?

Si, Pat. Vamos a sobrevivir. Por mas, vamos a prosperar.

Por lo menos, vamos a prosperar mejor de contigo y su "parliament of honkeys."

Has tenido su tiempre, Pat. Has tenido su tiempre.

¡Muchas gracias a usted, Jason! ;)

Yo no entiendo... Ay de mi!

just get citizenship legally. that's all some of us are saying. again these people are taken ADvantage of. the hard workers in the agriculture areas/california are speaking up about being exposed to a lot of pesticides. this has been highlighted on NPR. being illegal takes any power from these people. they can be
empowered by becoming citizens like many have done in the past.

the FAIR report was released last year that said the 3 million illegal aliens/undocumented workers cost california 9 billion dollars/yr. mostly schooling, healthCare and prisons.

Never will you hear personal responsibility for problems here. Money is poured into special programs at the expense of others, 2 bilingual elementary schools and one middle school shut down because scores were shameful and the great effort fell apart.

What the u.s. needs is a 10-mile-wide meteor.

are missing is that Buchananan included millions of U.S. citizens in his little hate screed. Most of the Hispanic population in this country are American born, or here legally. Yet we're not excluded from his rant.

Evidently, I, a 6th generation American, am part of the problem in that little pea brain of his.

*You* might not be critizing illegal immigration from a racist or xenophobic place, but HE IS.

Clearly his apprehension is not limited to financial costs of illegal immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries, it's ALL of us, and who we ARE.

I want this bigot off my cable tv. I'm fairly sure most of America does too.

Whenever this racist pig has anything to say about race it's from seventy fucking years ago. It is so insulting to hear this imbecilic old hateful white man blather on with his Archie Bunker racist bullshit the world is leaving behind.

A hundred or so years ago WASPs were wondering the same thing what with all the Irish Catholics flooding the big cities of the Northeast.

Hmmmmmm.

Patrick - you are a freakin' bigot.

And the endgame will be the same -- Hispanic immigrants will assimilate and mainstream American society will conclude that many (if not all) Hispanics are, in fact, white. And that will be the end of the issue.

We're all immigrants. Who cares?

.

Noone seems to remember back in the 80's when Pat ran for President his platform was to build a wall on the US/Mexico border to keep out all the illegals. He was laughed out of the race.....then we forgot and let Dubya build the damn wall. It was a stupid idea back then, it's still stupid. Pat was a racist back then...he still is. Maybe if we don't listen he'll go away.....

just aren't smart enough to comprehend. They use pictures instead of words.
