Sheriff Joe's rabid supporters spew hate: 'Kill any man, woman or child who comes across the border illegally'

Well, we've seen plenty of recent evidence that Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the nativist law-enforcement chief of Maricopa County, Arizona, attracts genuine extremists in support of his cause.
This recently released YouTube by Humanleague makes the case even more starkly. Its centerpiece is the opening comments by an avid supporter of the Minutemen and Sheriff Arpaio named Brandi Baron, who opines thus:
Baron: I say, give orders to shoot to kill, and kill any man, woman or child who comes across the border illegally. I'll bet you, you kill enough of them, right off the bat, people will stop coming over that way.
[Questioner]
That's what I just said. Personally, I think a minefield would be good. Why build a fence when you can plant some mines?
Q: You just said that you would kill kids.
Baron: If they're being drug across the border, hell yes. The difference between those people and us -- Our country is No. 1. Theirs? Pffft!
This sort of inhuman callousness and disregard for human life is part and parcel of why nativist movements like the Minutemen -- and the mainstream embrace of such factions by public figures like Arpaio -- inevitably spawn violent offspring like Shawna Forde and her gang of killer Minutemen, who gunned down a family in cold blood because they mistakenly believed the father was a big-time drug dealer with cash on the premises. There's a powerful continuum between gangs like Forde's and "mainstream" nativists like Arpaio and his supporters.
As Jill Garvey at Imagine 2050 observes:
This is exactly why Shawna Forde felt justified in breaking into a Latino family’s home and murdering a little girl and her father.
While some of the individuals featured on this video may be unstable or exhibit strange behavior, they are not crazy. These are functioning adults who are perfectly capable of behaving in a reasonable manner. They choose not to. They choose hate over tolerance. They choose to advocate violence over rational dialogue. Violence against immigrants occurs because bigots in positions of power (Sheriff Joe) set the stage and provide an atmosphere that make it acceptable.
Incidentally, sentiments such as these are nothing new to the Minutemen. In the video below -- featuring Minuteman leader Chris Simcox -- you can watch one of his Minuteman cohorts opine similarly:

I work with a few people like this and read the crap a lot of these people put out on the internet everyday, and there is no communicating with them. They are racist, xenophobic, bigoted and small minded. They are so freaked out over Obama winning the election, it's as if they want to see another civil war. Even as pissed off as the left was with the two bogus elections of W, I never saw behavior like this from them. I fear for what sort of plots the wing nuts are hatching. That said, obesity is often (not always) and indicator of an emotional emptiness, a need not being filled. Food ends up being the substitution. And particularly high fat sugary foods fill that need through chemical reactions on the brain.
When you realise that obesity has skyrocketed in this country, it's no wonder the other troubles we're having -- we are a fat, fucked up country. And these people screaming, nasty and angry are a reflection of the trouble we're in. They are the sickest of the sick.

If a person has Type 2 diabetes (which is virtually an epidemic thanks to the Big Food / Big Corn Syrup megaforces), both insulin and the more common oral meds (Metformin and Glyburide) cause weight gain that is extremely hard to control.
So yeah, please focus on people's ideas rather than their weight.

I can't begin to say how unfortunate it was to read this thread and not only read Brandy Baron's terrible comments about people of my ethnicity, but also to see comments from people I like on C & L that repeat things that are very hurtful to women of a certain weight (ex. the word "pig" has been used in here, my mother still has a very visible negative reaction to hearing that mess after hearing it from someone who should have been more considerate towards her, so yeah...)
I don't really see the point of focusing on their looks when their behavior and opinions are so ugly and offensive, it's hard to believe they're real people and not just putting it on for the camera, I always feel the stereotype "rednecks" in movies are overdone but maybe not.

Since the early 1990s, the sheriff of Maricopa County, AZ has been on a crusade against illegal immigrants. Sheriff Joe Arpaio has apparently neglected other law enforcement duties to follow this mission. His controvertial policies include sweeping up Mexican-american citizens along with undocumented aliens, and holding them in tent cities behind barbed wire in the Arizona heat, feeding them rotten food, and denying medical and mental health care. People have died there.
The guilty and the innocent have been made to sport pink underwear, and work on chain gangs. Inmates have been hog-tied, pepper-sprayed and beaten by guards; those who "assault" guards are put on bread and water rations.
Our current head of Homeland Security has had a long relationship with Arpaio, and was in a position many times as a U.S. Attorney, then as governor, to shut down Arpaio's show. She did not. Some write it off as good politics on her part; Arpaio's tactics seem wildly popular in the area. Arpaio claims he may soon get a network teevee reality show (Fox?). When ordered to investigate his abuses in 1995, most claim Napolitano did so reluctantly, and not much came of it. She claimed, "We run a strict but safe jail, and I haven't heard from anyone who thinks this is a bad thing." (Not true, and not funny.)
The final report was mainly a whitewash, only demanded Arpaio clean up a few things, and his tactics were essentially given a blessing. He claimed total vindication. In fact, Arpaio stood with Napolitano when she announced her 2002 bid for governor, and his support probably helped her win the 12,000 vote margin by which she won. As governor, she seemed deaf to complaints about Arpaio's policies, much to the chagrin of the mayor of Phoenix, who also complained that resources were being used for border patrol that were needed in other law enforcement areas, you know, like robbery, murder, etc.
Complaints have been made that Arpaio is cozy with neo-nazis in the area, and the mayor of Phoenix has charged that Arpaio 'directing law enforcement at the request of white supremacists." Online videos of him schmoozing with them at the roadblock checkpoints are available, and in May he announced the formation of a "posse" by which he could deputize all the thugs he might want.
Protest marches have attempted to shine a light on the disgusting practices, and various civil liberties groups have tried to help, apparently with little effect to date.
Napolitano, to my mind, was a rotten choice for head of Homeland Security. When her name surfaced as a possible Obama pick for SCOTUS, my hair caught on fire.

Maybe it's time to stop insulating myself from the wingnuts, and time to try communicating.
I find it increasingly hard to even decide who to even say hello or good morning to, all this sudden hate over something so elemental would make anyone scared, there have been waaay too many instances of blatant unacknowlwdged racism all over the country lately, and it's not only conservatives or (gasp!) Republicans, I have ran into a few anti-brownie rants in this very page, I guess thanks a lot conservative rabble-rousers, and by the way, wake up y'all, this time it's all about the Mexicans (which is anyone from anywhere between Tijuana and The Patagonia as far as these Brutes are concerned), but next time who will be hate-flavor of the month?
Racism will always be around, but at a time of such economic strife, people always look for scapegoats. And with the media pointing a big foam finger at Mexicans, it's no surprise.
It makes me afraid for my family--my wife, in-laws, nephew and niece--who despite being U.S. citizens for several generations, could be targeted because of their look.
Maybe it scores points with the viewers for Lou Dobbs to continue creating this myth that EVERYONE who appears Mexican or is of Mexican descent is an illegal is irresponsible.
BARON: I say, give orders to shoot to kill, and kill any man, woman or child who comes across the border illegally. The difference between those people and us -- Our country is No. 1. Theirs? Pffft!
Uh, any country that shoots human beings on sight probably doesn't have the right to claim the Number One slot.
These people who spew hate are ridiculously stupid like , someone should have stopped their parents from coming to this "great", "free", land we call America that was actually bought in blood (hmmm?) Which For The Record definitely did not belong to any Caucasians before this unnecessary massacre of a transaction occured by these same people's grandparents and ancestors. What goes around comes around ....
All racism is so sad, and with our next-door neighbors in Mexico it's even sadder.
The age-old pesky U.S.-Mexico border problem has taxed the resources of both countries, led to long lists of injustices, and appears to be heading only for worse troubles in the future. Guess what? The border problem can never be solved. Why? Because the border IS the problem! It's time for a paradigm change.
Never fear, a satisfying, comprehensive solution is within reach: the Megamerge Dissolution Solution.
