The teabaggers are getting ready for the next round of wingnuttery against the Obama administration. It sure looks like they lost on health-care reform, but they have already been organized for a long time around the issue of immigration, so they are ready and rarin' to go careening off the far-right cliff.

This weekend, the nativist right-wingers at ALIPAC and the National Policy Institute organized a series of "Tea Parties Against Amnesty.

However, at the rally in Minneapolis, the demonstrators got punk'd by a young man who called himself "Robert Erickson".

"Erickson" got up and delivered a rant against European immigration. At first the crowd was whooping and hollering as he talked about the rights of "real Americans" -- but then it gradually tapered off as he went on and they realized they'd been had.

Here's the speech:

Hi, my name is Robert Erickson and I’m really excited to be here. Its people like all of you, and events like this that make our country great! Give yourselves a round of applause!

I just want to talk about a couple themes this afternoon because I love this country and I want to see America be the best place it can be.

Mr. Gutierrez is getting ready to propose an immigration bill in just a few short days, and we have to make sure he knows that we want a bill that's tough on immigration. Now is the time for us to stand up and make our voices heard!

In Minneapolis, where I’m from, we have a huge immigrant population that’s been causing a number of problems. With the economy in recession, and so many people getting laid off, and unable to find work, immigrants should not be competing for the few jobs that are out there. It's just not fair to the folks who have a claim to this land and the right to be here. All across America, they are contributing to the flooding of our job markets making it hard for Americans to find jobs. Well, I'm fed up, and it's time to let our politicians know that enough is enough, and we're not gonna take it any more!

We need to secure our borders to protect our country. We need to restore order and put an end to the anarchy that's sweeping the nation. We need tougher immigration laws to make sure that we send these people back where they came from. We need to protect the sovereignty of the real Americans. We need to hold our politicians accountable.

It's no secret that with an invasion of immigrants comes waves of crime. We see them involved in massive theft, in murder, and bringing diseases like smallpox, which is responsible for the death of millions of Americans. These aren't new problems, though -- they have been going on for hundreds of years, and continue to this day.

I say it's time for us to say enough is enough! Are you with me? Are you with me? Let's send these European immigrants back where they came from! I don't care if they are Polish, Irish, English, Italian, or Norwegian! European immigrants are responsible for the most violent and heinous crimes in the history of the world, including genocide and slavery! It's time to restore the sovereignty of people native to this land!

I want more workplace raids, starting with the big banks downtown. There are thousands of illegals working in those buildings, hiding in their offices, and taking Dakota jobs. Let's round them up and ship them out. Then we need to hit them at home where they sleep. I don’t care if we separate families, they should have known better when they came here illegally!

If we aren't able to stand up to these European immigrants, who can we stand up to? We need to send every one of them back home, right now.

Thank you very much, and we'll see you in the streets!

Columbus Go Home! Columbus Go Home! Columbus Go Home!

Not surprisingly, the organizers were pissed. Sally Jo Sorensen at BlueStemPrairie was there to watch, and she reported that some of the nativists started getting violent:

Most of the MINN-SIR supporters were slow to catch the satire, and so the cheering from that side of the crowd took a while to subside. As they realized they'd been punked, they stood in a cold, stunned silence, while the 30 or so counter-protesters urged Columbus to go home.

Unfortunately, some of the pro-MINN-SIR audience made up for what they lacked in humor through the use of violence. Both Danielson and I saw middle-aged men attack young protesters, knocking one off a bike before he started throwing punches at the young man.

Just as shocking was the reaction of the state police working the rally, who pushed back those being attacked, rather than those attacking the counter protesters.

Neither of us have ever witnessed violence at rallies and events we've attended in the past. The attacks formed a sharp counterpoint to Hendrycks' shrieked claims from the podium that MINN-SIR "patriots" had "respect" while the young protesters were rude.

I've been warning for awhile that there is a violent element already involved in the immigration debate, and when they become empowered by the "tea party" types, it's going to get ugly. Looks like the debate hasn't even started yet, and it already is.

If you thought the town-hall teabaggers went nuts over health-care reform, just wait.

It sure looks like they lost on health-care reform

Everyone but the Wall Street Medical Mobsters lost on health-care reform.

but they have already been organized for a long time around the issue of immigration

Once again, it is the Capitalist behind the shield of their Trans National Corporations who organize and win. They want unlimited International flow of capital and restricted flow of people.

The race is on for the lowest possible labor cost.

It is most unfortunate that these working class folks are hoodwinked time and again into believing and acting in diametric opposition to their own interests.

The Capitalists encourage and exploit their xenophobia. Racism may well have been developed as a means of dividing and conquering the working class.

It is class war and the working class is losing badly.

Especially on this part:

It's seems to me that the Capitalists want an international neo-feudal system.

roooth's picture

First, abolishing the so-called "death tax did nothing more than establish landed estates in America, just like European aristocracy - which was the point.

Next, George W. Bush tried to provide the ultra-wealthy American aristocracy with cheap, never unionized, never represented labor in the form of "guest workers", non-citizens who would "earn" their citize4nship through a form of indentured servitude to their rich overlords - who would hold the threat of deportation over their heads in exchange for their cheap labor and no legal or civic representation.

If Bush had gotten away with that, and with privatizing Social Security just in time for the bank collapse his buddies set up and profited off of, the neo-fuedal state would already be a fact.

But, never kid yourself, they have the money and the media behind them, and they won't stop trying until they are forcibly stopped.

Remember how the Goldman Sachs CEO claimed he's doing "God's work" by sucking all of the money out of the economy for the top 1% to have? This is how they all think now. They have a twisted Gilded Age conception of how our society should be; if you're wealthy, you deserve to enjoy a luxurious life. If you're poor, it's your fault and you better find contentment serving the rich, because that is your lot in life and you obviously deserve it - or you would be rich like them.

It shows the priceless crowd reaction to Robert's speech and weird weird interactions w/ Ruthie, Sue and the other teabaggers. Columbus go home!

You hit the nail on the head with this comment. It's a class war: do insurance companies care about them? Does Wall Street care about them? No and no.

So many lies, so much propaganda. The strength of this movement scares the crap out of me.

The right-wing, as we saw this summer, never misses an opportunity to pass a local story up the chain through the Outrage Funnel into the hands of those at the top so that they can demagogue it and blow it out of proportion.

Here we have someone being beaten up by Teabaggers *and* the local police is complicit? Why is this not coast-to-coast? Oh, right, because it didn't happen to a Republican.

This country is doomed if we continue to allow the extremist authoritarian cultists on the Right turn only the issues THEY want into emotional, hot-button topics.

This should be a lesson to anyone who decides to join a group and blindly follow the leader(s). This incident shows that some of these people are not really listening to what is being said by speakers at these vents but are operating purely on the basis of emotion. What is most outrageous is the way that the leaders use them in ways that benefit only the leaders. IMHO, this is clearly an abuse of these people and an abuse of power.

Unfortunately, there is most certainly a subset of any population that is simply susceptible to manipulation due to that group's psychological, intellectual, emotional or economic shortcomings.

It'd be awesome if libertarians developed a taste for the "personal responsibility" you seem so hellbent on shoveling down everyone else's throat. All this passing the buck by the conservative spectrum in this country is starting to make Wayne Gretzky jealous me thinks.

Andy K's picture

That gathering of brain surgeons and rocket scientists didn't understand Erickson's speech as it was- until it was too late!

And do some research on that "fire in a crowded theater" metaphor. It was as inappropriate when first popularized in a SCOTUS opinion as it is in this situation.

Also, the "fire in the crowded theater thing" applies to knowingly and falsely yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater.

What did he say that he knew was false?

In any case, if you happen to be in a crowded theater with me and you see a fire, please don't hesitate to say something - we'd all appreciate it. :)

Why does the main stream media continue to ignore the Christian problem here in the United States?

According to the FBI, an estimated 1,382,012 violent crimes occurred nationwide in 2008, and the 99% of those crimes were committed by Christians . In fact, Christians in the United States murdered over 14,000 Americans last year. Christians also committed close to 10,000,000 property crimes against Americans last year.

One of Christianity's major sub-sects, Catholics, are responsible for the majority of illegal immigration from Mexico into this country. Christian bankers on Wall Street have wrecked the economy. Last spring, a Christian terrorist drove around Dallas randomly shooting people on the Freeways. Why is political correctness preventing the media from saying what we all know is true? That Christians in America pose a grave danger and that you and your family are likely to be victims of Christian criminals sometime in your life.

While many claim that Christianity is a religion of peace, hundreds of wars in the past 2,000 years have been started by Christians. And while gunpowder may have been discovered by the Chinese, just about every weapon of modern civilization has been developed by Christian scientists and engineers. There can be no doubt that Christians are responsible for just about everything that's wrong in America.

I say, send them all back where they came from.

for people with diametrically opposed points of view to comment on this (or any other progressive-leaning) blog is to elicit a knee-jerk response of having to defend one's point of view, instead of using their time more productively in thought-provoking discourse with others of similar mind.

This is why blogs like Red State, Michelle Malkin, etc. have very restrictive commenting policies, so that they are seemingly only preaching to the converted, with no opposing views allowed. Kudos to Crooks & Liars: I think you are something like a Devil's/Angel's Advocate for being so open to this ongoing dialogue.

Old Billy's picture

That's one of the strengths of the progressive viewpoint. Valuing the individual allows for a broad and deep talent pool. Of course, the downside is the "herding cats" problem. In a 2006 nationwide poll, University of Minnesota researchers found that despite an increasing acceptance of religious diversity, atheists were generally distrusted by other Americans, who rated them below Muslims, recent immigrants and other minority groups in "sharing their vision of American society". They also associated atheists with undesirable attributes such as criminal behavior, rampant materialism, and cultural elitism.[22]

So, a pre-dominantly Christian population doesn't trust non-Christians, and associates them with bad things?

And, your point would be?

What you conveniently fail to point out is this: despite the fears of an overwhelmingly self-identified Christian population, the vast majority of crimes, includng murder and other violent crimes, are not committed by the groups these Christians distrust, but by the Christians themselves.

So what if they associate atheists with, "undesirable attributes such as criminal behavior, rampant materialism, and cultural elitism", when they themselves are overwhelmingly guilty of these things?

I suspect Jesus would advise these folks to remove the mote from their own eyes, but I see no indication that most of today's American Christians are paying much attention to the actual teachings of Jesus anymore.

They've gone for the Bronze Age, Old Testament vengeance version of religion. Bloodthirsty, bigoted, homophobic, oppressively patriarchal and superstitious - they only pay attention to Jesus when they can get all rapturous about how He was tortured to death and plans to come back and take His bloody revenge on Mankind.

The results of that research study only reaffirm that. Go to a KKK rally and do a study asking about non-whites and you'll get the same skewed results.

Old Billy's picture

Strange, I make the point all the time that an atheist has to be an optomist, assigning all past success and pinning hopes for all future success on the goodness and capacity of the human being.

Otherwise, why even get up in the morning?

Genius!!! These kinds of things shows how stupid these people are and what they are really all about.

1) they are just sheep and go along with anything said

2) differentiating between European and Mexican illegals immigrants is really just about racism. There are European illegals and always have been.

3) they believe lies about taking jobs away and disease, etc.

I find the more someone protests against illegal immigrants the more they are losers in life themselves. It is always about blaming someone else for their own failings in life.

Illegals have never been a problem to me or to America. They give a lot economically to America and take back relatively little. Some studies say that about 50-60% of illegals file and pay full income taxes and all pay sales taxes, so they contribute alot to the tax base, while mostly taking nothing out. They do the jobs that no one else wants to do. They are a net contributor to the economy, particularly in agriculture, construction, food preparation business, landscaping, etc.

It is funny that these people want to blame the poor illegal immigrant who often just wants a better life. If these teabaggers want to blame anyone they should blame the small and large businesses who give illegals jobs. They are the ones inviting the illegals to this country. Without the jobs there would be no illegals. But, no these nuts would never consider blaming the companies that hire them. They should be chanting "down with corporate and small business America".

there is a big statue of Chris right across the street facing them, that's why they used him as the example.

I know because the building on the other side of him in the background is the judicial building, I worked on that nightmare for a year or so during the early 90's

"I've been warning for awhile that there is a violent element already involved in the immigration debate,"

Unless I'm confused about who is who, in the video linked from this sentence, it's the pro-immigration protester who attacks.

I'm not saying you're wrong about there being violent elements in the anti-immigration movement. But making a claim and then using something that undermines that claim as evidence of that claim just gives the other side ammunition.

And what the eliminationists call jokes aren't. The humor in their statements—whatever might be funny about them—is entirely contingent on their listeners' underlying attitude about their fellow Americans, an attitude that not only demonizes them but also reduces them to subhuman level, prime targets for violent elimination. Jokes shouldn't have a concrete real-world effect, and these do: at some point members of their audience (particularly the more hate-filled and mentally unstable types) will act on them.

This is where the specter of fascism raises its head on American soil. Eliminationism has always been a signature trait of fascism, the manifestation of its embrace of the myth of national rebirth through the fiery destruction of the existing order. As we shall see, it has a long history in America; but in the context of modern mass politics, it almost always raises the red flag of incipient fascism.

"Columbus Didn't Discover Anything"

I doubt any of my Mediterranean Rim ancestors would have made it into the States under the current laws. Given the huge number of Irish and Anglo-Irish illegals currently resident in the U.S., that side of my family tree would probably have made it.

Current immigration law is such a Byzantine patchwork that just about anybody not born in this country can be deported. Of course, if you have the money for lawyers ......... And this mess is what the Tea-Baggers are so anxious to preserve?

Good show, "Mr. Erickson", whoever you may be!!!!!

Congratulations "Robert Erickson" and friends , that took a lot of balls . Terrific ! Given their IQ's I am really surprised the tea bagger morons caught on at all . Dumbest people on the planet without a doubt .

I think it's funny because it highlights exactly how uninformed and easily led most people are---including those of you on the left. If you want a clear example of how stupid ALL of US are, on both spectrums, youtube "dihydrogen monoxide". When it comes down to it, we are all being manipulated. Bush was bad but Obama is much worse. Check out the youtube "Obama Deception" . I hate them both. Wiki the Associated Press. You can't tell me that something isn't afoot here. Why is it that the most powerful people in the world meet in secret and deny their presence?

Not to be too nitpicky, but this rally appears to be in St Paul in front of the capitol, not in Minneapolis. Across the capitol mall from where this was is a statue of Leif Ericson, the first European-American. In fact, some of my best friends are European-American.

That was some entertaining video, though I think 'crowd' might be too strong of a word. Could NRA guy be any more of a stereotype?
