Um, do you think maybe someone should point out to Glenn Beck's guest on his show Friday -- Rabbi Daniel Lapin -- that, even though it may feel good to condemn all atheists as "parasites" in a "moral society," it's a profoundly irresponsible thing to do, particularly for someone claiming the title of Rabbi? After all, there is an important historical precedent for what happens when you single out an entire sector of the populace as a "parasitical element."

It's not even worth the time to point out that atheists can propose precisely the reverse claim -- that organized religions are a parasitical element on society -- with probably an even better rationale. Because this kind of rhetoric is a classic example of eliminationism.

Not that Lapin is any stranger to wielding eliminationist rhetoric:

"I am absolutely convinced that God is far from finished with the story of the United States of America," he said by way of summation. "First of all, [there's] the matter of the little battle that must be fought, just as it was in the 19th century." There were, and are, "two incompatible moral visions for this country. We had to settle it then. We're going to have to settle it now. I hope not with blood, not with guns, but we're going to have to settle it nonetheless. The good news is that I think our side is finally ready to settle it. Roll up its sleeves, take off its jacket, and get a little bloody. Spill a little blood. We'll settle it. And we'll win. And then there's no holding us back."

Indeed, this Rabbi Lapin is also known for his long associations with Jack Abramoff, as well as for being the Rabbi who David Duke loves to quote.

Lapin continued:

The sad fact is that through Jewish actors, playwrights, and producers, the Berlin stage of Weimar Germany linked Jews and deviant sexuality in all its sordid manifestations just as surely as Broadway does today. Much of the filth in American entertainment today parallels that of Germany between the wars.

"Indeed, it does," Duke writes glowingly, "It is interesting to note that there a few Jews in America who are concerned about the destructive influence of many powerful Jews. He [Lapin] is concerned not only because he believes that such evil is against his own morality but that it also inevitably brings down Gentile wrath upon Jews. The amazing thing is that there are so few honest voices like that of Rabbi Lapin."

No wonder he now shows up as a "religious authority" on Glenn Beck's show. He fits right in.

Fuck gold and silver. You cannot eat gold, silver, diamonds, or other rare materials, so they might just become as worthless as paper money. That's why I invest in firearms, ammunition, MREs, and dope. With these items I can barter for necessities, eat to survive, self-medicate, or use them to otherwise acquire other items I might need, including the currency of the day.

I used Greek terms for the hell of it:

Greek Pig Latin

Sigeo (Silence) Lencesilay

Khaeos (Chaos) Oschay

Phos (Light) Ightlay

Logos (Reason) Sonray

Mathema (Numbers) Bersnumay

Aksiopistia (Relationship) Shiprelationay

The most immoral and inhumane people I know are also the most religious and judgmental.

The atheist and agnostics are generally good people just trying to enjoy life and contribute.

Rabbi Schmuck is exactly what is wrong with religion. But because he is a "holy man," just like Beck is on t.v., the weak minded will listen to what these two "parasites" have to say.

I only belong to two of the above groups. Atheist? What's the old saying, organizing atheist is like herding cats. Liberals? The ones in politics are generally to weak and or stupid to get anything done. Maybe they just don't have the will......

It's honestly tiring. I have to avoid the rhetoric. Just for the sake of my sanity.

Maybe Glenn Beck should ask the good Rabbi what he thinks of Mormons. I'd be surprised if he considered them different than atheists.

Epinnoia's picture

By de-linking the Trinity, the Mormons have begun the process of sorting the 3 persons of God into a hierarchy. The Father is a superior figure to the Logos in Mormonism. And because Judaism only forbids placing other gods ABOVE Yahweh, there would be no inherent conflict.

Mormonism is Christianity on its way back to Judaism. You can't help but recognize as much when you study up on it. There is an obvious fascination with ancient Israel, and plenty of Jewish symbols in the Mormon architecture as well.

Conversion: Offense Is the Best Defense...

In the current religious climate, most religions see secularism as a direct threat. Most of these groups have taken an aggressive stance against secularists, Atheists, humanists and anyone else who dares to challenge religion. Aggressiveness toward a secular worldview is a great recruiting tool for fundamentalists of all stripes. Secularism has become the new substitute for the devil. When a minister mentions "secular humanist" from the pulpit, it's almost always a spear thrown at those who would deny the god virus. Go into any Christian bookstore, and you will find books about living in a secular world, living with a spouse who is not saved or how to convert friends and relatives. The god virus is always concerned with protecting and expanding its territory — that is what these books are all about.

Many a sermon seethes with anger. Few people are angrier than a righteous preacher talking about the current state of the world. If you watch a close-up shot of Pat Robertson, Paul Washer, James Hagee, Jerry Falwell, Ted Haggard or James Dobson, you will notice that their facial gestures convey anger and that their voices sound angry. Their smiles are tense. They often use sarcasm in their description of those they do not like. They use aggressive language and hand gestures. War-like words are ever present in their vocabulary. Nothing of love or tolerance comes through, except in the most superficial of gestures and only for those within their viral group...

Mr. Neiwert writes:

". . .even though it may feel good to condemn all atheists as "parasites" in a "moral society," it's a profoundly irresponsible thing to do, . . . ."

From the perspective of Rabbi Daniel Lapin, it is a perfectly responsible and moral thing to do. After all, if he does not say these things, he does not get paid. Then, he and his family will not have an income and bad things will happen to them.

From the perspective of Rabbi Daniel Lapin, it is David Neiwert who is irresponsible. Imagine criticizing a man who just wants to get paid for his job. And as I am sure the good rabbi would point out, Mr. Neiwert get paid for criticizing Mr. Lapin, who is only doing his job. Who then, the good rabbi might ask, is the immoral one here?

"The believing mind is externally impervious to evidence. The most that can be accomplished with it is to induce it to substitute one delusion for another. It rejects all overt evidence as wicked..."

"The time must come inevitably when mankind shall surmount the imbecility of religion, as it has surmounted the imbecility of religion's ally, magic. It is impossible to imagine this world being really civilized so long as so much nonsense survives. In even its highest forms religion embraces concepts that run counter to all common sense. It can be defended only by making assumptions and adopting rules of logic that are never heard of in any other field of human thinking."

"Religion, of course, does make some men better, and perhaps even many men. There can be no doubt of it. But making them better by filling their poor heads with grotesque nonsense is an irrational and wasteful process, and the harm it does greatly outweighs the good. If men could be made better—or even only happier—by teaching them that two and two make five there would be plenty of fools to advocate that method, but it would remain anti-social none the less. If the theologians could only agree on their doctrines their unanimity might have some evidential value, just as the agreement of all politicians that the first duty of the citizen is to obey them and admire them has some evidential value. It may not be true, but it is at least undisputed by all save a small fraction of heretics, which is certainly something. Fortunately for common sense, the theologians are never able to agree. Even within the sects, and under the more rigid discipline, there is constant wrangling, as, for example, between the Jesuits and the Dominicans. Thus the cocksureness of one outfit is cancelled out by the ribald denial of all the rest, and rational men are able to consign the whole gang to statistics and the Devil."

Recently Americans have begun to read and hear that “Israel receives $3 billion in annual U.S. foreign aid.” That's true. But it's still a lie. The problem is that in fiscal 1997 alone, Israel received from a variety of other U.S. federal budgets at least $525.8 million above and beyond its $3 billion from the foreign aid budget, and yet another $2 billion in federal loan guarantees. So the complete total of U.S. grants and loan guarantees to Israel for fiscal 1997 was $5,525,800,000.

I am having trouble putting my finger on why it bothers me that Mr. Neiwert -- who should keep up the good work, by the way -- invokes the Nazi analogy here. Sure, the comparison is apt enough. But if Rabbi Lapin were a fundamentalist asshole rather than a Jewish one, the analogy would be just as apt but we would not cite the "irony" -- or whatever it is -- that makes us hold a rabbi to a different level of moral scrutiny. Surely we can attack Lapin's rhetoric on its own terms.

The fiscailly conservative, from what I can tell, have been driven from the GOP. Re, the mis-lead, the saying 'Honey will atract more flies than vinager' comes to mind.
The third? Not much can be done about those. No sense in driving them away with insults.

The forth catagory is one that I would disagree with Mr. Neiwert. These people are those that would rather give up civilization than pay taxes. Except that they would protest if the benifies of civilization were used by the 'Other' (those having differently coloured skin) and if they were denied those same benifites while they do not pay any taxes.

Is this any surprise? The religious reich (ironic in this case) has always felt they can say anything, no matter how outrageous about anyone they don't lie. But free speech for others is "disrespectful" and "evil" so must be suppressed. every theist I have ever known has been a fool, a liar, or a hypocrite. Very often, they are all three at the same time.

If freedom means anything, it is the liberty to tell others what they do not want to hear.
