Waxman's in, Dingell's out

It's official:

California Rep. Henry A. Waxman on Thursday officially dethroned longtime Energy and Commerce Chairman John Dingell, upending a seniority system that has governed Democratic politics in the House for decades.

In a secret ballot vote in the Cannon Caucus Room, House Democrats ratified an earlier decision by the Steering and Policy Committee to replace the 82-year-old Dingell with his 69-year-old rival. The vote was 137-122 in favor of Waxman.

The ascension of Waxman, a wily environmentalist, recasts a committee that Dingell has chaired since 1981 with an eye toward protecting the domestic auto industry in his native Michigan. The Energy and Commerce Committee has principal jurisdiction over many of President-elect Barack Obama's top legislative priorities, including energy, the environment and health care.

As John says, this is truly welcome news. We may finally get some oversight from this committee. Matt Stoller has more.

Well, there's some good news!

You're gonna get WAXED!

with an eye toward protecting the domestic auto industry in his native Michigan.

That doesn't sound like a stellar endorsement for protecting out environment.

Why can't he do both?

Here's why:

The Auto Industry Is Backsliding on Global Warming.
Historic fuel-economy data reveals a disturbing trend -- every automaker’s average new vehicles emit more global warming gases today than ten years ago, with the exception of BMW.1 In 1999, US fuel economy overall dropped to its lowest value in 20 years. Two decades of fuel-saving technologies that could have helped curb CO2 emissions have instead gone into increasing vehicle weight and performance.

The Big 3 Account for Most Global-Warming Emissions from New Vehicles.
The Big 3 sell the dirtiest vehicles and capture the vast majority of US passenger vehicle sales, making them the worst polluters by any measure. Together, Daimler Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors’ vehicles are the source of 76 percent of the CO2 emitted by vehicles sold in 1998. Immediate action by these automakers to raise the fuel economy of their light trucks would significantly reduce global warming emissions from new automobiles.

It's not that GM doesn't have any hybrid products. It's that GM isn't building many of them.

Maybe Waxman can change this long pattern of avoiding their responsibility to the environment. But I don't see the Democrats trying to do much of that the past two years in power. It's not like this "crisis" is new:

During the Clinton administration, the government offered the big three automakers, Daimler-Chrysler, Ford and General Motors, incentives to develop energy-efficient cars, but the carmakers arrogantly ignored efficient solutions and developed even larger and thirstier automobiles. Seemingly, GM missed the memo that oil is neither plentiful nor cheap in 2003 when it introduced the 10-mpg Hummer.

In going green, and keeping jobs in Detroit.
I mean, seriously, that's gonna have to work. Gotta find a way to make money and make environmentally responsible vehicles that rival European and Asian cars for economy, and durability...
Otherwise...they're gonna fail...if they can't compete...I don't wanna give them any of my tax money if they ain't gonna join the rest of the world here in the 21st century...

Henry Arnold Waxman (born September 12, 1939 in Los Angeles, California) is an American politician and Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. He has represented California's 30th congressional district (map) in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1975. Waxman, a Democrat, is considered to be one of the most influential liberal members of Congress. He serves the cities of West Hollywood, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, and parts of the city of Los Angeles. Before his election to Congress, he served six years in the California State Assembly.

Thanks for clearing that up for my dumbass, lol!

I surely earned the monicker "Stupid Git" on this post. :)

I'm illiterate.

I misread what was posted and was thinking Waxman was protecting the automakers. My error.

Sorry for the rant. :)

We all make mistakes...except me of course, I thought I made a mistake once, but I was wrong. ;)

already has much more brainpower than the entire Bush gang did. Yay!! I think and hope Waxman will be just what we need in this position. He's always seemed to rational and clear-thinking to me.

His appointees, sure they were nearly all nincompoops, but Cheney, and a few others up there...they ain't stupid...not by a long shot.
Evil and dastardly, youbetcha! But stupid...not so much.

But you're right about the fact that Obama ain't pickin any idiots, for damn sure.

Next: Harry Reid

Hillary! Hillary! Hillary!

"Dingell has chaired since 1981 with an eye toward protecting the domestic auto industry in his native Michigan."

Gee, THAT worked out well! Your tax dollahs at work... Paying this bitch AND the auto industry.

Dont worry vaccine makers, you can continue to poison us - Waxman will look the other way.

and MY RIGHT NUT has more ethics

Has more integrity!

I think Waxman is a great choice and will do a good job, however I would like to see him keep his word re- Sibil Edmonds and the information that she has been trying to get into the public view. She speaks of treason,bribes,cover-ups and even the sale of top secret information. From what I can gather, her information is true and needs to be investigated ASAP, go get-em Harry, no excuses now.-CEO,citizens,eyes,open

Nice of all of you self-righteous blogosphere to throw Dingell under the bus.

I'm amazed how little any of you know of his career and contributions other than his support for the auto industry. Gee a Michigan represenative supporting the auto industry...I'm shocked...such horror.

Dingell has done more oversight, done more for health care, medicare, medicaid and the FDA than Waxman ever will or could. This is truly a sad day.

All of you that whine about "K" Street, where do you think Dems and Waxman get their money? Its always the other guy that is in bed with the lobbyists...not Saint Waxman and his environmental crusaders. I'm waiting to see what he will do with the FDA. What a joke...You should be ashamed.

I want to know who was in the energy meeting with Cheney. First off!

The only parts of the Canadian economy that are working are Newfoundland (thanks to offshore oil drilling) Saskatchewan (the Williston Oil basin bordering North Dakota) and Alberta (thanks to the incredibly polluting tar sands development. If' I'm Stephen Harper or the premiers of the aforementioned provinces, I'm not getting much sleep tonight. They've been in bed with the oil industry for so long that they won't know what to do when oil companies have to play by new, more stringent environmental rules.

BTW, didn't Obama say something about a new focus on the environment in a taped video to some environmental conference in California? And is there any truth to the rumour that RFK Jr. is being considered to head the EPA?
