Go Home

Dishonest morons motivated purely by ideology have decided to throw a scream-fest over a proposed "stay in school" speech from the President to children.

President Obama wants to deliver a message to students next week emphasizing hard work, encouraging young people to do their best in school. The temper tantrum the right is throwing in response only helps reinforce how far gone 21st-century conservatives really are.

This is no small, isolated fit, thrown by random nutjobs. The New York Times, Washington Post,LA Times, AP, and others all ran stories this morning about the coordinated national effort to either keep children at home so they can't hear their president's pro-education message, or demanding that local schools block the message altogether.

The people organizing this protest and the people mad about the President daring to "indoctrinate" their children are the people who said nothing when Ronald Reagan talked favorably about tax cuts to schoolkids, when George Bush sat in a classroom on 9/11, and when they waged a campaign to put PRAYER in American schools. It's OK, then, to indoctrinate your children to almighty God, but not for them to hear a speech about hard work from the elected President of the United States. Conservatives have waged war on respect.

But the award for lack of self-awareness has to go to NBC News, which asks today:

Finally, here’s one more thought about the entire controversy over Obama’s education speech on Tuesday: Since the White House has said the text of the speech will be available for 24 hours before he delivers it and since they altered the lesson plan language, why is this still a controversy? The ability of the conservative media machine to generate a controversy for this White House is amazing. In fact, this is an example of a story that percolates where it becomes harder and harder for some to claim there's some knee-jerk liberal media bias. (Does anyone remember these kinds of controversies in the summer of 2001?) The ability of some conservatives to create media firestorms is still much greater than liberals these days.

Now, at least they admit that it's impossible to claim liberal media bias, meaning they understand who's to blame here. But do they really have to say "The ability of the conservative media machine to generate a controversy for this White House is amazing"? Isn't the answer that the non-conservative media will simply blindly follow whatever conservative media decides to gun up? Don't media types privilege conservative mini-controversies and hissy fits? Isn't there literally no way they could lay off something like this? Isn't that the problem?

Conservatives have cracked the code: yell real loud about some invented outrage, and watch the media chase the soccer ball. They actually don't have to cover it.

I just gotta tell you this. Remember the question you asked me yesterday about when god made olives and you said where you had searched for information? It's easier to just show over and over crazy people screaming at town hall meetings and crazy people threatening to keep their kids home instead of allowing them to hear a message from the president, than to cover important stories like people suffering due to lack of health insurance. And people in financial agony due to medical cost for someone in their family. Yeah, instead of covering and showing the serious side of this matter, just sit back and watch the freakin' sideshow.

So, the rightwing whackjobs think Obama is "brainwashing" and indoctrinating 3rd graders to do...what? They're too young to own guns and "rise up" against the establishment. By the time these elementary school children are old enough to vote, Obama will have FINISHED his 2nd term (thanks, in no small part, to knee-jerk Rethuglicans). Just what is he brainwashing them to do?

I think the R's are going to punch themselves out. Obama's been in office less than 7 months, and they've criticized everything from his jeans and what his WIFE wears, and called him a Socialist/Nationalist/Fascist/Marxist and a major-league Dr. Kevorkian! Pace yourself, conserva-dudes; it's going to be a long 8 years if you don't!

Thank you posting this with the inclusion of St. Ronnie & Bush the first being beamed into schools. Many articles omit that point.

At the corner store this morning, a man was ranting to the clerk about his daughter being forced to listen to a "black man" telling her what to do. His exact line, "No black is going to tell my daughter what she should do!", blew me away. The clerk chuckled and said, "They know they have to get 'em young." (I have no idea who 'they' is)

I said that Obama wasn't 'some black guy', he was POTUS. And since when can't the POTUS address students? The discussion quickly devolved from there.

Red-neck guy: He is not my president.

Me: Fair enough, GWB wasn't mine, but I would not object to him speaking to students.

Clerk: Well, Bush wasn't trying to brainwash our kids.

Me: Neither is Obama, I see most events as an educational opportunity, regardless of my personal feelings.

Red-neck guy: Oh, you're a touchy-feely liberal, that's why you don't worry about the kids. (WTF does that mean!)

Me: OK, we're done.

I would call the interaction a comedy of errors, if I thought it was funny. Made me sad.

These whiney, white rednecks are so stoked-up that a black man is in the White House, now are worried that their precious white snowflakes are going to have to listen to Obama fill them with propaganda, and ask them to serve him!
Check this out about how serving Bush was so important that:
Wasn't too long ago that the top DOJ offical charged with interviewing and hiring prospective hires, asked this question to them "What is it about George W. Bush that makes you want to serve him?" Prior to testifying before the House Judiciary Committee about screening of prospective DOJ hires making certain that they were sufficently DEVOTED to serving George Bush,--- shared with a Justice Dept. offical this vow, "All I ever wanted to do was SERVE this President!"
It's not about Obama talking to their fat,overweight,lard-arses and whiney, spoiled rotten,snot-nosed kids, it's because a black man President Obama put a whipping on them and the Republican Party that all the Ajax in the world, couldn't scrub off! Being as devastated as a racist can get, they just can't handle the truth about themselves or their party so now they're using their own flesh and blood (even if their snowflakes are a result of marrying their own brother or sister) to project their hate! That's all it"s about, a black man in the White House!

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't George W. Bush addressing school kids on the morning of the 9-11 attacks ? Where was the "outrage" and public "outcry" that day ? Like it or not, Barack Obama is our ELECTED President and those people who scream and carry on every time he does anything (even swatting a fly during a recent interview)need to start putting all that negative energy into positive work that can make for real change in this country. They all act like "It is my WAY....or MY WAY". If their old ideas are so effective and right, then how come our country is in the deepest recession since the Great Depression ? Think back, that happened on their watch !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No one objected when the incompetent George W. Bush tried to read to students, or Reagan, even wife Nancy just saying no didn't draw a breath.

Really- making this much fuss over the President of The United States making a public address to the students. Harry S. Truman did it. So did Dwight D. Eisenhower and Jimmy Carter.

Be it so those parents who ban their students from hearing President Obama address the youth of our nation will only miss a part of living history.

It is obviously doubtful their kids would be likely to retain much if any of the information that the President will convey in his talk to students. Not any more that is than their parents would if they were ever a responsible enough citizen to watch a State of the Union Address.

These kids won’t be taught the lesson of what it is to be concerned with issues and learning the necessity of becoming an involved citizen rather than just running home and hiding when serious issues hit the fan.

So other than removing the distracters from the classrooms so the other students will be able to concentrate on what needs to be heard...and possibly learned...I think those parents with the mentality to withdraw their little juveniles from the classroom on that day is an excellent choice! Perhaps it’s not that big of deal after all.

It is then when they grow up we know who will be the ones that know when and how to be an informed voter, responsible citizen and be independent enough to decide a choice without a talking head telling them how to think, talk and which hair-do's are appropriate for the day!

You accurately write: "Conservatives have cracked the code: yell real loud about some invented outrage, and watch the media chase the soccer ball. They actually don't have to cover it."

One has to remember that everything in the USA is done for money and profit. The 'news' organisations too - just like the health care industry. So why would their profit-driven behaviour be any different?

I regularly watch The News Hour with Jim Lehrer. What a difference a non-profit news gathering outfit makes. I can sure see where the passion for news and reporting lie. It is not on the side of the commercial, for-profit networks.

Ehh, they just want to shut him down so he is not able to influence their children with his ideals. I don't see what is the problem with encouraging young people to stay in school and work hard. Some children don't have responsible enough parents to do that for them, which would make his reasons for doing it all the more noble. There is nothing sneaky or underhanded about that. A president is SUPPOSED TO use his power to influence the public in a positive way. Telling people what to believe and telling people why it is beneficial to do something are two different things. I think the president deserves a chance

You said it all and very well I might add. I am a white female over 65 American and I am proud to say I grew up in the days when many battles were fought and won. The people who hate will always hate the fact that we have a brilliant Black man and brilliant black woman in the white house. The POUS is smart enough to know that and you just have to pray that he will overcome!
