John Cornyn Thinks We're At War With India
By dday Saturday Jul 25, 2009 9:30amThe President had a big victory this week when the Senate voted to strip funding for additional F-22 fighter jets, which the Pentagon and the Air Force didn't want, which haven't been flown once in Iraq or Afghanistan and which are apparently vulnerable to rain. It was a small step toward breaking the stranglehold of the military-industrial complex. The lobbyists were out in force to keep this alive, and a lot of lawmakers who have parts of the F-22 made in their district wanted to keep the gravy train going, but eventually, sanity prevailed. The military budget is increasing this year, and eventually we have to end a circumstance where we spend more on the military than every other country in the world combined, but if we couldn't cancel the F-22, we would not be able to cancel pretty much anything. So it was a good step toward lessening the power and influence of military contractors. Robert Farley has a great roundup of opinions.
Naturally, John Cornyn (Bugfuck Crazy-TX) doesn't agree. In fact, he thinks we have to use the F-22 to counter all sorts of threats. Including... India.
"It's important to our national security because we're not just fighting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq," Cornyn says. "We're fighting -- we have graver threats and greater threats than that: From a rising India, with increased exercise of their military power; Russia; Iran, that's threatening to build a nuclear weapon; with North Korea, shooting intercontinental ballistic missiles, capable of hitting American soil."
I wasn't aware that we were at war with India. In fact, I don't get over there much, but I'm pretty sure we're an ally. In fact, Hillary Clinton just spent four days there this week. We just completed a civilian nuclear power agreement with them last year.
I guess being Republican means "never having to say you're sorry to an allied country for calling them an enemy." Remember when John McCain thought we were at war with Spain?

The defense contractors are still pushing the notion of air superiority. Nobody bothered to tell them that wars aren't being fought like that anymore. No more dogfights in midair - all the fighting is being done on the ground.
No, it will never just be "on the ground" ever again. A first strike from the air weakens the enemies defense systems and the it's ground troops. Air strikes saves American lives. Ever since the first use of air power during WWI it has been proven. America would have lost many more troops if we did not use our air power first in both Iragi wars. This is a fact.
Cornyn's view of India is a silly one I agree, but he is doing it because the F-22 will be built by people who vote for him here in North Texas. The jobs will be in his district, pure and simple.

What is the U.S. govrenment doing To make sooooo many enemies overseas.. I do not see the other nations except Israel , Saudi Arabia worrying about these other countries .. We are spending more money on our?? military then all other countries combined...

Have a war with any nation and the other countries wish they can screw the h... out of us by the government letting the corporations move their manufacturing plants overseas along with the jobs created by them..

GREAT summary of Cornyn....Since he's on his last term and couldn't give a CRAP about anything but his bank account that will help fund his retirement at the expense of the US Taxpayer, he says and does most anything he wants...He is the best example of the need for a RECALL provision in our state laws that could be presented.

People complain about term limits , but I say if you have a representative you like and is a true democrat let him run again.
But when the elect officials change their policies from which they gave their voters after elected , then there should be a Recall..
This recall should be an automatic process which can be done by the voters with no restrictions for the Leader's club...

I think she said it was 10 points higher than most states and good old Govenor Rick Perry has been in office for 9 years. Are the people in Texas satisfied with this? Or, is it the fact that the majority of the people who vote are just really STUPID?

The largest military budget in the world (totaling all the other military budgets COMBINED). And with this, the United States has not won a war (definitively) in over 60 years.
He probably meant a _potential_ for risk based on their technology?
India has a space program.
India has nukes.
Can India put nukes on ICBMs? Dunno. Presumably the CIA and Intelligence Committee might know. If they did go nuts, India would be more of a risk than North Korea.

I actually think that nukes for countries like India is mostly about saying, "See? We're big boys too. We matter" than it is about any meaningful deterrance or aggressive war making capability. They would be reduced to a radioactive parking lot if they ever actually used them, and they know it.
I cannot wait until Cornyn finds out we just signed a treaty that allows India to buy US weapons systems. He might think that is all right because some of those weapons will be built in Texas. He might even figure out India is not an enemy.

At war be it a shooting or cold war, then the F-22 would be the perfect counter to India's Su-30MKI fighters, which is one of the best fighters Russia has produced.
BUT since we're not, the F-22 is essentially a monetary black hole. Even more so since the F-35 is likely to be the USAF, the USN, and USMC's aerial workhorse.
The closest to actual hostility the U.S. has gotten with India is India saying "Oh no we're not going to pick side in Cold War, thank you come again." Besides why would India want to start shit with the U.S. with all the jobs they're getting because of outsourcing?

Sorry Senator but as usual you are very much mistaken. ISRAEL tells us that Iran is trying to make nuclear weapons. Iran has never made any such threat but has consistantly said they are trying to build a nuclear power program. And US intellegence agencies back that up. But don't sweat it, no one really expects any Repubobstructionist politicians to have a clue about what they're talking about.
What I hate is the hawk's notion that any rising power (see India, China) has to be threatened militarily, so that we can remain #1 militarily.
Why can't we see a rising power as an opportunity for cooperation instead of an opportunity for conflict?

John India is likely ally for USA. No can see how a billion growing democracy which is growing fast to populate the world will be a threat.
