Global Warming and the Only Question that Matters

by John Atcheson CommonDreams here

…the science on climate change is getting increasingly dire. There's a growing consensus among researchers that we have to get atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gasses (GHG) - now at 387 parts per million - down below 350 ppm as soon as possible, or risk self amplifying feedbacks that will result in abrupt, catastrophic and irreversible heating of the Earth.

---

China proclaims they will start cutting CO2 emissions in 2050 here - we best hope they start long before then.

China's population is actually supposed to begin to decrease around 2040-2050.

In fact, between now and 2045 the populations of the US and China will increase by roughly the same amount, but at that time China's will begin to decrease but the US population will continue to grow.

liberal scam. Dare to mention the oil companies having a larger interest, and you get no where. There are too many who won't believe it until the ocean hit's their door step, or all the plants are dying around them.

same ones that just KNOW that the Earth is only 6000 years old.

...my butt.

did it too!" mentality.

these days?

Because she disqualified herself when she accused the President of taking his vacations in an "exotic country" (which happened to be his home state, Hawaii)

I can never concentrate on anything she says because I'm always so fixated on her nostrils.

Good point, Political Junkie. Why bring her up?

Kookie Roberts has never been relevant. She blames Democrats for everything. She has never been known for intelligent discourse, far less for being intelligent.

What an asshole!!

"Here's your dinner."

"Quick; someone get the Marshmallows"

OK;the first 5 words!

shot the old fart in the face. I was engaged in an ongoing battle with a Repunk on our little forum and before most of us had even heard what had happened he had a post up pointing at the Chappaquiddick incident from almost 40 years before as some kind of defense of what Cheney had done.

I've seen it in every case where the punks have pulled something indefensible... they'll go clear back to caveman times to find some reason to claim that it's OK for them to do it because someone else did it first.

Typical third grade bullshit that a kid with more than two brain cells outgrows by the time he/she goes to the fourth.

They don't believe in democracy - they don't practice democracy either. They sabotage democracy.[know thy enemy] We must stop being surprised by this crazy fact.

Is she even relevant these days ? So elite and out of touch , much like George Will , that she is just a joke anymore .

fuck cokie roberts.

fuck Cokie Roberts with Sam Donaldson's wang doodle.

here's what she'd say though:
Clinton, penis, blow job, whitewater, Vince Foster, etc..

...MSM chum, INCOMING!!!

Answer: I sucked Dick...

I would say Obama is sucking corporate dicks and the only reason he's not being impeached for it "is" because he's not lying about it!!!

(Well...except for keeping The White House visitors log "secret"...)

But that all depends on what the meaning of "is" is.

Of course I am NOT feeling like being crass....

So I won't say it.

Whew!!!

That was a relief!!!

Ha:

!

The only thing I would change is MAJOR CORPORATE DICKS…

That is if someone were going to say such a thing.

They have pledged $23.7 trillion to the Wall Street Mafia in one year.

Now they can't get a lousy health care bill through at $1 trillion for TEN YEARS.

Of course not, they have already given all the money away.

As I said last September, this is the greatest SWINDLE in the history of the World.

Woody thinks the entire health care imbroglio is nothing more than a cover for the Bankster Caper.

I think there is something to that.

We are chumps galore…

Give the woman a cigar. She's hit the bullseye.

I'm not a chump. That's what sucks so bad. Being stuck in the same boat with chumps and knowing they are taking me down with them.

We are surrounded by chumps and morons who still haven't figured out how the repukes are playing them. In fact, they are out in the streets cheering for the bastards.

I really hate all these stupid f**ks as much as the evil pricks who are stealing us blind and laughing at them.

set fire to the cats. c-c-clinton did it.

...and pussy....cats.

Thanks for that riddle driftglass. My frown is upside down.

Congratulations to Y.M. Yang, who came from behind Tiger Woods in the PGA Championship tournament to become the first Asian-born golfer to win a PGA major.

Watched the whole thing, it was awesome!

do we still have a democracy?

have we ever really had a democracy?

Our democracy ended when Bush 2 had the election handed to him.

I harken to when raygun blew away the ATC Union, PATCO.

I am from Nepal and a very recent convert. Looking at how scientific, logical, and practical Flying Spaghetti Monsterism is, I could not but be impressed by it. But that is not why I converted. When I saw the Image of His Noodliness, I believe he communicated to me by some extrasensory means, and I had this unjustifiable urge to read the FSM Holy Gospel, and thus I became Enlightened.
Again, I am very thankful to His Noodliness for enlightening me and treating my cousin from terminal stage of cancer, giving eyesight to my Grandmother, and for giving Dick Cheney a serious case of the heebie jeebies.

Only 33 days remaining until International Talk Like a Pirate Day- my favorite of all the Pastafarian holy days!

Aaaaar matey. Ye be waiting too?

I remember that from last year. Keep us posted.

Anyway, 37 states are democrat. What's that leave the party of losers?

Look at the map. They have more land mass...and they are more American (macho) than the rest of us...so they should get to rule the rest. Because they have the biggest....

How big is yours?

With bluedog bribocrats like Baucus and Conrad!

Oh, you mean the other party of losers?

...don't you get it? Moral relativism is the f*ckin' engine of conservatism, despite their pathetic claims.

Today, most of the blogs have been about Obama and the congress are going backward on health reform. Most of what we heard today was that they are getting weak on public option. One comment got my attention over the rest that were mostly talking about never voting democrat or for Obama again.

The reason this one comment caught my attention is because I said the same thing before July 4th. This person said that maybe a march on D.C. would get their attention. About 2 weeks before the 4th I said the same thing and got no response or rebuttle. I have single payer (Medicare) and I am on Social Security and live month to month on my income so in a way, I don't have a dog in this fight. But many of you that are whining and typing away at your keyboards have the means to march on Washington D.C. Both times that I have commented on this I still haven't gotten a response so, what is your excuse. Was that camping, fishing or the trip down to watch the fireworks too important while we were supposed to be celebrating freedom, that is slipping away everyday? WTF are you thinking? You wonder why the majority in our congress can't get together on issues, you can't even get away from your keyboards.

You let the teabaggers own that day.

Counting the value of one extra body in a DC march with the travel time and expense versus working the keyboard for the same amount of time and using the money otherwise, us keyboard warriors are still doing pretty well on balance. I've had far more contact with members of Congress via keyboard than I've ever had demonstrating.

At this point thoug, I'm not sure of the lasting value of even a huge march on Washington (CIGNA could still out-advertise it), but I agree something more than just griping and typing must be done. In my mind the answer is a general (and repeated if necessary) strike(s) rather than marches. Everywhere, not just in DC.

Another answer might be beginning to primary corporate Democrats now - and that includes Obama if the President messes up on health care (This is my last straw as well).

Not quite a tangent - would our recent time and money been better spent by going to party in Pittsburgh? I'm still kind of wishing I went. But: Just how important is our physical assembly?

It does matter that people do something besides bitch. On the 4th of July, we let the teabaggers own the day even if they didn't have many people out there. We have to be out there, whether it's in front of the home offices of our congress people or in front of the Whitehouse or congress itself. Damnit, we can't let them have the ball in their court.

Owning the corporate megaphone makes a few hundred teabaggers look like a movement - any time they want it to. A million people at the Capital mall can be made to look like a threat, a bunch idiots, or made to just disappear with last week's news. It's almost impossible to get media attention when the media's direction is predetermined.

We agree we need more. What do we do? This typing does help the spread of information, but what more do we do with it? Heck, it was enough to help put a black man in the White House and give huge majorities in Congress, but nothing's changing. What more?

General Nationwide Strike.

If it's up to me, I pick the Fifth of November.

they did it in the 60s, it can be done now. The MSM can't afford to ignore it now even if Fox does.

She can ignore it with a fantastic smile.

It was her interview with Sarah Palin that finished the McCain/Palin run for Prez.

Well, that and McCain saying: "The fundamentals of the economy are sound" on the eve of one of the biggest meltdowns in U.S. history.

Cratering in fact. Gotta love DAVE!!!

Good thing he suspended his campaign and flew to Washington, eh?!? Putz. ;)

.........'We have the best economy in the world.' said Hilly the moment before the meltdown.

I like it!
Count me in.

Sorry for posting this long after the party started (by the time all you folks get going here I'm in dreamland).

I went to a meeting here in The Berkshires yesterday regarding health care reform and many of us came to the conclusion that rather than try to get a million Americans to go to D.C. (especially now when finances are so tight for so many...especially the "activists" who tend to be average income Americans), for a one day demonstration that it would be better to organize at our local Congressional offices with a 24/7 presence.

Basically co-op out the responsibility of demonstrating outside the local offices of all the 535 Congress members day and night until we get a Medicare for All health care system...H.R. 676. Keep all our literature the same and the message standardized to hand out to local citizens who come by to talk.

Keep maybe a presence of a minimum of twenty people at the offices at ALL times (weather permitting...obviously we can't march around in a blizzard...). Have people sign up for two hour slots of time to show our commitment to the issue.

If this were done day in and day out at all the House members and all the Senate members offices until the day a final vote was taken and the legislation was passed it would be a more powerful way to have our voices be heard.

And also we MUST run H.R. 676 progressive candidates for office. We need to leave the Alan Grayson and Dennis Kucinich and John Conyers types alone and focus our efforts on booting out those who are not supporters. In order to be heard we would have to run as Independents though. Because unless you have a lot of money the primary would come and go and the incumbent Republican/Democrat would always breeze through and you'd be gone. If you run as an Independent you will still be there in November and will be included in all the local debates, forums, lunches, media interviews etc.

We need to let them know we are going for their jobs in a very serious way.

Just my two cents on the subject.

BTW, it would be easy to organize the local vigil idea. One well placed full page ad in The New York Times would get things going. ($70,000).

I like how off-hand comments mean Obama's dropping the public option, even though the full context of his town-hall quote implies that he wants to do more to reform health care, not less. Meanwhile, millions of Americans are still traveling to Mexico for medical treatment. It's nice to know the feds are doing a heckuva job fighting ID theft. Oh, and why did you give gun nuts have the right to shoot innocent people in parks? Tax dodgers who can no longer take cover in Switzerland are on edge, for some reason. Gay couples have kiss-ins in Utah, because apparently you can get arrested for that, even though there's no actual law. Dem diplomacy saves another one of our hostages. Even Bollywood actors get profiled at airports. Gates isn't sure when we'll leave Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Afghanistan's votes might be rigged. States screw college students out of financial aid. Maria Shriver talks the talk in regard to her mom, but doesn't walk the walk in regard to her hubby's treatment of the disabled in Cali. It's hard out there for a candid camera torturer. R.I.P. to the first American casualty of Gulf War I. UK death toll in Afghanistan goes to 200. A Thai elephant lost its leg to a mine.

Hey guys, I want to atone for my sins and clean my connection with reality. Last year, before Obama got elected I posted a comment on this site that derided him and I was rightfully called racist for it (I never called him any names or anything - just a prejudiced rant/troll), however after seeing in him office I have practically changed my view of him and now I support most of what he is/was and stands for. It started with liking his intelligent wife and children and then his principles started to click with me also.

Now, people around me, everybody else call me a liberterian, but I support healthcare reform - creation of a public system and I hate the hicks/hillbillies who stand in the way with their disqusting pseudo-protests. I could go on and on how privatizing everything will create a Zimbabwe like system/situation for U.S. of A - the opposite of what freemarket gurus, like Peter Schiff, preach irrationally. But regardless,

I just want to (A) apologize and clean myself and (B) call You out to stick to supporting the public health care plan - because if You win this the rednecks will never win anything ever again. Strengthen Your positions - this will be the defining liberal issue. You have me, an enlightened coast/living out of the country independent by your side - why on earth fret about what "protests" happen in West Virginia or Georgia (as the latest WSJ highlights)?

Btw, if it needs to be said - I am an independent person, not affliated with anyone - my comments have not been paid/sponsored by any org./business/ideology.

The media is responsible for giving the protests more hype than they deserve. Ignorant irrational people that willfully choose not to verify what is actually in the legislation are a waste of time. Sure they provide some entertainment, but you cannot argue with people that don't debate facts.

The concerns raised are with members of Congress and white house messaging. Just who are the members of Congress really working for and what kind of back door deals are being made? The Democratic Party controls its own destiny at this point. It is all on them because the people given President Obama the numbers he asked for and said could make the difference. The large coalition formed largley via the internet worked their butts off for Obama and fellow Democrats in Congress. It is time for President Obama and the Democratic Party to deliver.

I bet the politicians are just faking it by trying to find somebody to dumb down as an eloctrate for the next elections that would vote them back in and the "protestsing" crazies are the easiest choice, they do not understand that most people who vote for them really still are for healthcare reform as Obama proposed it, with a public scheme.

I blame sites like politico.com which over emphasise the importance of statements on Facebook by fringe lunatics like Palin into a public discussion - mind you then that site gets read by most assistants inside Washington who help to formulate positioins, decisions, emotional approaches, statements, gaffes, mistakes and even affairs and scandals.

When politicians go too far by playing fearful and thanks to "advice" from their aides, giving in to a minority of manufactured puppets and well, stupid peasants - they can and should be replaced by the next willing participants in the political process.

As far as control of politics - there always have been changing fractions who do that in civilization - but it is much better in the long run to be an independent, true to yourself individual - I like Obama, but he is too much under the control of these people via Emmanuel. Obamas wife Michelle is highly likeable, I wish Obama would understand more what she and the people who are attracted to her have to say. I think Michelle Obama can achieve a cult like status almost and achieve stuff Hillary would never achieve.

Now get out there and bring us some more converts!!!!

...trust me, I do not think I am as big as people who control media, poltical coverage, but things will get affected for the better very quickly within the next month and a half substantially.

I've had a long day.

I saw Sicko today.

Tom Barrett is injured but recovering after intervening in a "domestic assault" (as if there is such a thing as private violence). The person committing the assault turned on Barrett and attacked him, injuring Barrett's head and hand with a metal pipe. Barrett called 911 first, then intervened.

http://www.necn.com/Boston/Nation/2009/08/16/...

In all the media reports on this item, not one mentions that Barrett is a Democrat. If a republican politician were involved, the media would be all over it like flies on shit (figuratively and literally), congratulating the repug for protecting innocent people...oh wait, that would never happen. A republican would walk away, and say "it was a private matter", and that "the government shouldn't get involved...".

GOT NEWS FOR OBAMA - YOU ARE GOING TO LOSE: The Hill: "Obama picks public option fight with liberals." Why do Republicans embrace their base, and Democrats Run Away from Theirs? NO CHANGE: White House appears ready to drop 'public option' - http://www.salon.com/wires/ap/2009/08/16/D9A4...
Apparently ready to abandon the idea, President Barack Obama's health secretary said Sunday a government alternative to private health insurance is "not the essential element" of the administration's health care overhaul. The White House indicated it could jettison the contentious public option and settle on insurance cooperatives as an acceptable alternative, a move embraced by some Republicans lawmakers who have strongly opposed the administration's approach so far. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the White House would be open to co-ops instead of a government-run public option, a sign Democrats want a compromise so they can declare a victory on the must-win showdown.
At this point, we must continue to promote & support the progressive candidates, the progressive members of the House & Senate how few there are and absolutely turn our backs to the 'moderate'/'centrist' sellouts...including Obama...which I will not be financially supporting in the next election if he allows this fate on the climate bill, I might even leave the democratic party if that happens...

The Sellout May be Complete - http://www.hillbillyreport.org/diary/451/the-...
Having long ago taken single-payer off the table, it now appears as if the sell-out of any real reform to the healthcare system is complete. Yes, today it seems as if the Democratic White House we all worked so hard for has been cowed by a bunch of lunatics and liars. Kathleen Sebelius, who got the job Howard Dean should have occupied seemingly put the nail in the coffin today.
Well at least now we know why they were so eager to throw Dean under the bus after his successful run at the DNC. He has some guts.

Kucinich Predicts Retreat On Health Care Reform - http://www.wcpn.org/WCPN/news/27450
Much of the controversy surrounding health care reform has swirled around the so-called public option - a government insurance plan that would compete with private insurers. Congressman Kucinich wants the public plan to be the ONLY option; in other words, a single payer government system for everyone. Kucinich has for years been pushing such a plan.
He says the problem with the U.S. system is the layer of bureaucracy imposed by insurance companies. Cut the private health insurers out of the mix, he says, and affordable, universal coverage is within easy reach. Kucinich: “One out of every three dollar goes to the activities of the for-profit system.
They cream it right off the top for corporate profits, stock options, executive salaries, advertising, the cost of paperwork. If you took that 800 billion dollars a year, which is what that represents, and put it into care for people you’d have enough to cover everyone, doctor of choice, vision care, dental health, mental health care, long term care, prescription drugs - we’d all be covered.”
