Congressman and Community Leaders To Risk Arrest at May Day Immigration Protests
This May 1st, immigrant communities and citizens alike will hit the streets to say no to Arizona's new "show me your papers law" and yes to real, federal action on immigration reform this year. Eighty cities across the country are gearing up for major rallies, marches, and protests tomorrow. Students who had come in from New York, Florida, and California to participate in the Washington protests led their own action in front of Governor Jan Brewer's DC office today. They chanted, "Arizona, Shame On You! Immigrants Are People, Too!"
Watch it:
Tomorrow's marches are a follow-up to the major March for America: Change Takes Courage, which drew over 200,000 people to the National Mall on March 21st. At that event, President Obama delivered a firm message promising he'd work on comprehensive immigration reform "this year." Now, with Arizona's new law driving already-desperate communities into action, we're likely to see events in Chicago, New York, and L.A. turn out tens of thousands of people.
At the DC event, 40 protesters will go so far as to risk arrest, practicing peaceful civil disobedience in the face of cynical Washington politics.
Deepak Bhargava, Executive Director of the Center for Community Change, writes today at Huffington Post:
Tomorrow, there will be over 80 demonstrations in favor of immigration reform across America. One of them will be in Lafayette Park, across the street from the White House. There, some 40 dignitaries including a member of Congress, clergy, heads of organizations and community leaders will likely be arrested in acts of civil disobedience against unjust immigration enforcement and the political cowardice in addressing our broken immigration system. I will be one of those getting arrested.
I am willing to get arrested tomorrow because the massive deportations being undertaken by the Obama Administration are tearing apart families, separating children from their parents, risking the lives of disabled immigrants and vulnerable refugees, and spreading terror into our communities. I will be arrested because America needs to understand immigration reform is not merely a political issue; our broken system is a moral disaster unfolding in our nation. Civil disobedience is important at this point because it signals to our leaders that the current situation is so unjust and unsustainable that people are no longer willing to comply or be complicit in the injustices committed by our government.
Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), who just announced that he intends to join in the civil disobedience, released this statement:
We have to keep the pressure on and let the President and Congress know we need immigration reform this year," the Congressman said Friday. "I am joining the rally in Washington because the effort to get immigration reform passed is escalating, the attacks on immigrants and immigration reform are escalating, and the Arizona law is a wake-up call that inaction at the federal level has huge consequences for communities, families, and individuals.
WHAT: Rally for Immigration Reform
WHEN: Saturday May 1, at 2:00 p.m. ET (music program starts at 1:30 p.m.)
WHERE: Lafayette Square, (across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House)
In addition to civil disobedience, many May Day events will feature celebrities who are taking a stand against what happened in Arizona. Via Perez Hilton:
And if you're lucky enough to be in Los Angeles this weekend, go be a part of their march with guests like Gloria and Emilio Estefan also taking part!
It's not just a hispanic issue, it's one that affects everyone regardless of their background.
Last but not least, students who've walked 1,500 miles on what they are calling the "Trail of Dreams" will be a major part of the Washington, DC event. Watch their stories:

The politicians created this mess , now we are watching them squirm and try to figure a way out of it . The only good thing about this latest insanity is ( I hope ) that the Hispanics will remember who started this and who are backing this , the stinking sewer rat Republicans , and they will remember when they vote .
Who knows any more? With a one-party system, I can't help but think the timing of all this is cleverly orchestrated, and possibly for ulterior motives.
Immigration is not a new issue, and suddenly when the banksters are under the microscope all hell breaks lose on immigration. Seems a bit fishy to me. Or am I just too cynical??
That said, eff Nazi Arizona, and all the racist, bigoted knuckle-draggers calling for this type of draconian BS.
[Edit] Huffpo exposes even more nazi BS in Arizona: school curriculum, new rules, and anti "teachers-with-accents" troubles. You know where to find it, front page.
"If the US government enforced its banking laws like it did its park regulations, we wouldn't be
in this damn park in the first place." OCCUPY.!!
Clearly, Arizona is not putting the accent on education, these dayz ... Eh?!

According to Greg Palast, the real intent of the 'Guilty-even-if-your-Innocent' Immigration law, is voter suppression.
Imagine standing in a voting line 'when not white', where (R)ethugs will be approaching you and claiming you're an illegal immigrant ... unless of course, you leave the voting line.
Without sufficient documentation (the kinda documentation no one carries with them, normally), you are off to jail, whether you're legal or illegal.
Unfortunately, it's the assessment that makes greatest sence to me ...

Oh, yeah, and there's an election coming, in addition to my above post. Hmmm...

How very suspicious .....
If you are going to be like that, let me see your paperz ... !

The appointed Gov of Arizona is an impressionable child, afraid of the dark and paranoid.
She's accusing President Obama of not reacting to a. "terrorist attack".
If she were truley serious and not simply mentally ill, she should have FOX's signal blocked in AZ. FOX supports domestic terrorists like Dr. Tiller's killer, Tim McVeigh and Eric Rudolph.
Terrorist supporter, Limbaugh should be blocked as well but the appointed Governor is obviously in need of medical attention before she and her criminals like McCain murder an innocent human being or a child.
So, any takers on how little attention Fux News pays to this, or if they do, how anti-American they call the protesters?
all of these protests will be exponentially larger than any of the teabag tantrums. of course fox won't cover it. if they do it will be superimposed with a split screen of people sneaking across the border. most teabag rallies have been less than 5,000. the tim mcveigh memorial protests were less than 100 yet they got wall to wall.
uffda
I read their law, and it looked like they were going to continue to coddle employers who hire illegals.
I'm not interested in going after the illegals until after the honeypot, namely the employers are shut down.
I'd like to see a $50,000 fine for any business knowingly hiring an illegal immigrant, per illegal, and a $20,000 fine for any employer who was negligent in verifying an applicant's eligibility to work in the U.S. who wound up employed, per illegal. A $5000 fine for a non-business hiring an illegal such as a domestic worker.
This should be done in conjunction with some kind of registry or exchange that would match legal immigrants with employers.
What we don't need is draconian measures of dubious constitutionality. What we need is to make it unprofitable to hire an illegal alien. After that is done, then it could be assessed as to how much of a problem remains.
This is a great idea.
You would need to create a whole new enforcement arm, of course. Hey come to think of it, illegal immigrants would be great at the job.
In any case, you won't hear (R)z talkin' about this. They gotta keep the c(R)ackerz afraid 'n angry and the co(R)po(R)ations profitable 'n powerful ...

Reading the law I can see how it would be used to supress minority voting. Its not like there isn't precedent in our history with the laws that were passed in the south to curtail black votes. Given the recent history of such antics by AZ Repubs, it makes this law even more supicious.
NoBuddy, I've said for years that if people were truly interested in slowing the flow of illegal immigration then they would focus upon the reason illegals are here. They are coming for jobs. Make those jobs dry up by enforcing the laws on the employer side and much of the problem will take care of itself. Of course, first you must fight through the resisitance of those that believe its only the poor brown immigrants who are responsible for current immigration issues. How could rich, white, business owners have anything to do with the issue?! :(
The biggest problem with this new law is that it has made it so easy for the rest of the country to condemn Arizonans as low-life bubbas who hate Mexicans, rather than actually trying to understand what is happening down here.
This is an admittedly flawed law that was passed out of desperation that the Federal government has done nothing to secure the southern border. In the last 15-20 years (thanks to NAFTA, drug traffic and many other factors) the situation on that border has changed dramatically for the worse.
The Tucson Weekly has been reporting on the changing border situation for many years now, and their coverage may provide some context to this issue that is sadly lacking from both the MSM and my favorite blogs, including C&L. Here's a link to the latest story, published this week.
Yeah, I was thinking along these line, we Americans help created a economic refugees coming over the borders. Its mostly about money, Powaqqatsi style.
