DOJ to Arpaio: Show Me Your Papers

The U.S. Department of Justice is now being forced to sue Maricopa County, AZ Sheriff Joe Arpaio to compel him to turn over documents needed for the federal government’s civil rights investigation.

Turns out Arizona's "show me your papers" poster boy doesn't like having to produce his. Arpaio has denied investigators access to key documents for over a year and a half.

In light of the news, here's a little background reading on Sheriff Joe.

Arpaio's Record: Higher Crime, Wasted Money, Squandered Trust

America’s Voice Education Fund’s latest report on Sheriff Joe’s record reveals that his high-profile tactics have actually led to higher crime rates, nearly 3,000 lawsuits, millions of wasted taxpayer dollars, and a degradation of the community policing strategies that law enforcement agencies have developed to keep us safe.

What's more, violent crime is down across the state of Arizona --except in Sheriff Arpaio's Maricopa County. From 2002 to 2009, while the violent crime rate across the state as a whole plummeted by 12 percent, Arpaio's jurisdiction suffered a 58 percent surge in violent crime. The numbers speak for themselves:

As a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation by the East Valley Tribune found:

Response times, arrest rates, investigations and other routine police work throughout Maricopa County have suffered over the past two years as Sheriff Joe Arpaio turned his already short-handed and cash-strapped department into an immigration enforcement agency.

The full America’s Voice Education Fund report detais Arpaio's long, disturbing and ineffective record, including some 21 examples of Arpaio’s disturbing record, such as:

  • Violent crime rates are up in Arpaio’s jurisdiction while they have fallen throughout the rest of Arizona.

  • Arpaio has failed to serve over 40,000 felony warrants. Arpaio is suspected of misspending $50 million in taxpayer funds and has refused to turn over records for an investigation.

  • Over 2,700 lawsuits have been filed against Arpaio and he’s been investigated by the FBI and the U.S. Departments of Justice and Labor.

  • Evidence suggests Arpaio forced an undocumented mother to give birth while handcuffed to a bed.

Failure to Comply

Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been operating above the law for far too long. He's been investigated for using his badge to bully political opponents.

Arpaio sparked national protests last month and even used taxpayer money to pay for a reality TV show. Heck, he even posed for glamor shots with Neo-Nazis. Given his love of the media spotlight, there's no doubt he’ll use this latest development to try to play the victim.

It's unfortunate that the Justice Department has to take this step and force Arpaio to comply with a federal civil rights investigation, but we commend the Department for doing so.  If Sheriff Arpaio truly has nothing to hide, he should have no problem turning over the documents in question.

Let's play by his rules. Arrest him now, taken him into custody and we'll worry about the exact charges later. In this country you don't get a menu from which you get to choose which laws you will and will not obey.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Liberal AND Proud's picture

Well...you just explained it. From the looks of him, Sheriff Arpaio has spent a considerable part of his life looking at menus.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

I would say the waitpersons at the Pancake House know what he means when he says,
"Cup of coffee and the usual." All they reply is "Pie now, or after?"

POP I love that idea. Take him to jail right now, he 's broken so many laws he should be in jail along with the rest of the criminals.

Why is he not in jail? Who is falling down on their job? Start pushing their buttons, big time, please.

Your nation is being the laughing stock of the world.

"The numbers speak for themselves:" -actually they don't, it's just as plausible that Arpaio works in an area with higher crime unrelated to his policing tactics and is misbehaving as a response to that rise in crime. That graph is worthless, but has nice colors. Maybe the US should start really policing its borders so guys like Arpaio aren't created in the first place, instead of using him as a distraction from the root cause of the problem.

I'm a hard-ass on immigration, but surely you're not saying that the large number of crimes is due to illegals?

Usually once they enter they try to slip below the radar screen.

A little basic research would have shown them that big cities with large immigrant populations are safer places to live.

This is not just a matter of random correlation being mistaken for causation. A new study by sociologist Tim Wadsworth of the University of Colorado at Boulder carefully evaluates the various factors behind the statistics that show a massive drop in crime during the 1990s at a time when immigration rose dramatically. In a peer-reviewed paper appearing in the June 2010 issue of Social Science Quarterly, Wadsworth argues not only that “cities with the largest increases in immigration between 1990 and 2000 experienced the largest decreases in homicide and robbery,” which we knew, but that after considering all the other explanations, rising immigration “was partially responsible.”

To deny that reality and ignore its implications is likely to make life more dangerous all over America, diverting resources away from the fight against violent crime and breaking down the hard-won trust between cops and the communities where they work. Several police chiefs tried to make exactly this point Wednesday on a visit to Washington to talk about the Arizona law, due to take effect in July, and the bad precedent it sets. “This is not a law that increases public safety. This is a bill that makes it much harder for us to do our jobs,” said Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck. “Crime will go up if this becomes law in Arizona or in any other state.”

to not understand the words "violent crime"? Let me give you a hint - immigration is NOT a violent crime.

Jackie Mahendra's picture

Crime is dropping statewide, but "America's Tough Sheriff" Joe Arpaio's focus has been on showily rounding up unauthorized cooks and nannies, not violent criminals. There were 40,000 outstanding warrants in his jurisdiction, but he's calling press conferences and posing for TV cameras.

Not to mention, he's been busy bullying those who speak out against his tactics in AZ, campaigning for Jan Brewer, and blocking federal investigations.

throw his ass in jail. PERIOD, NO EXCEPTION.

ixnay's picture

that argument can be made by looking at those numbers without any need to the extra made up context that your "concern" requires.

Common sense dictates that illegal aliens would do anything to keep their profile low, and committing violent crimes ain't the best way to keep it on the down low, you know? (or maybe you don't know)

nope, not specifically, although illegal immigration is a crime, so yes... err... a rise in crime does constitute a rise in crime, whether they hide out or not. -Really I don't know what's going on in AZ, I hear alot of buzz about cartels using border towns as distribution points. Basically, when I see ppl responding strangely I assume it's only strange to me because I have an incomplete context. I'd really like to see some investigative reporting, instead of regurgitating rhetoric spewtum and postulation with a graph that has no meaningful data correlation. On the whole, I think this very serious situation is being addressed like a college football rivalry.

and use it and you may be less confused. You can start with the words "violent" and "felony". Those are words that are used in this post and should have prevented anyone who understands English from having the kind of confusion you state you are suffering from.

The government isn't asking for details on his personal life. They're asking for papers from his work as an employee of government, the job is chose to perform.

... that he is favorite on Hannity's Obama-bashing show?

If you need funds to pay for essentials, you have a revenue problem
If you need funds to pay for frivolity, you have a spending problem

Conservative hate-porn media types like to call liberals fascists. Rush, Beck, Hannity, et. al ike to pretend that liberals want to impose some kind of authoritarian ideal state. As if we want to have actual political correctness police busting open doors and making sure they drank their fluoridated water or teach their kids about sex or whatever. They think this because they constantly project their own dark desires on the rest of us. Also, they are largely retarded. Since they would be perfectly happy to force their ideas on us, they assume we would like to do the same to them.

In horrible, stark contrast to the completely false assertions that liberals are some how a threat to liberty in this country, consider Arpaio. Talk about a full-blown racist fascist with real authoritarian capability. This asshole is willing to openly use his power to attack and intimidate any who oppose him. He engages in frightening and shocking behavior like using his deputies to intimidate the local independent newspaper and filing baseless charges against politicians who want him to account for his massive budget and how he allocates his resource.

And now it is obvious that his zealous, racist war on the brown people is taking vital attention and resources from his real job - keeping the citizens of his county safe from crime. Crime has dropped everywhere in AZ except for Maricopa county. Plus he is costing the taxpayers of that county a fortune in legal bills, etc. to defend his crooked ass. The fact that he is still popular is enough for me to conclude that somebody stole a piece of the old-time racist south and dropped it in the middle of AZ.

The Political Junkie's picture

The DOJ is the Federal Government. That supercedes the good sheriff's jurisdiction.

Why the hell can't Holder and the boys round up his fat ass and throw him in JAIL?

I am in Europe, but I can tell you outright that you do NOT have a justice system in your country.

PLEASE START TO GET ONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Think about it, if you had a questionable immigration status or had a small amount of pot in your possession and were violently assaulted would you call the Maricopa County sheriff's department?
