Arlen Specter now backs Eric Holder

Just a few weeks ago Arlen Specter came out strong against President Obama's nomination of Eric Holder as the new AG for his administration.

Sen. Arlen Specter, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, has just thrown a wrench into the Eric Holder hearings planned for early January, saying Holder's involvement in the Marc Rich pardon is a "red flag" and a "very serious matter.

But Specter is already applying the brakes, indicating that Republicans are going to make a big deal out of Holder at the hearing. Specter said he sees no way in which the Holder hearings could happen before Jan. 26. Specter said he still needs to see thousands of pages of background documents and Holder's FBI background check.

"There are questions that need to be addressed," Specter said in a Senate floor speech.

Suddenly out of the blue, Specter is now going to back Holder.

Eric Holder's confirmation as the first African-American attorney general was assured Tuesday when Sen. Arlen Specter, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he will support confirmation.

"He will have significant Republican backing," the Pennsylvania senator told a news conference.

Specter's said he would not support any Republican filibuster to block the nomination.

d-day has an opinion on why he changed his mind and asks "Is there anyone more pathetic than Arlen Specter?"

There are many that are more pathetic than Specter, but I get d-day's point.

Spectre, Specter, has maintained his position however on the Magic Bullet.

Right Wing Hater's picture

He basically threw his right wingnut loyalists a bone....by 'being tough' and now by 'compromising' he'll appeal to so-called Moderates...

Politics as usual, hopefully the residents of PA are smarter this time around...

It's what he did for 8 years of Bush. Make big deal, take a stand, them melt like butter in a microwave. He would do himself a favor to just shut up.

"Is there anyone more pathetic than Arlen Specter?"

Man, if we could harness "pathetic", we could power the world with Republicans and have energy in reserve.

Someone from AIPAC called Specter and told him to STFU. The last thing anyone in Washington wants is a full accounting of who and what was behind Rich's pardon.

Amitola's picture

But, just maybe, some enterprising journalist will make all of Rich's
"behind the scenes" work just a little more public.

Arlen is "my Senator" - as I live in PA, and his usual MO is just to stick his finger (or some appendage) out the window to see which way the political wind is blowing - then he changes his view accordingly.
Pathetic doesn't begin to describe him.

Holder promised not to prosecute anyone from the Bush administration for the torture fiasco....

jimbojames's picture

that Obama wasn't going to pursue prosecutions. I think it was most recently reported when Obama spoke with that weasel, Stephanopolous, but who really believed that Obama would prosecute Bush, et al for war crimes or prosecute the corporate-enriching enablers or reduce the US military hegemony over our government. It's all well and good for Obama to promise no torture going forward but who believes that either. Of course, if Obama were to stand up for what is right and arrest Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Powell and several others as well as fire Gates, Petreaus and Mullen, I might be willing to reconsider.

Jo's picture

floating about, don't know how to get to the bottom of it, but the Wash.Times(ragsheet)is quoting Kit Bond saying Holder won't prosecute. Is Kit Bond lying? Is the Wash.Times full of shit again?
I read about this at DKOS.

Does Spector know or think something we don't?

jimbojames's picture

vote in favor of Holder is deeply suspicious that Holder assured the thugs that he will not prosecute. It seems that Jonathan Turley, Emptywheel, TPM the ACLU (and millions of Americans and billions around the world) are the only ones who want justice.

Terrible's picture

Beat me to it! And like I said there at Raw Story Holder damn well better prosecute or he is in violation of US law and should be prosecuted also.

Just saying!

If this administration bends over and hands the repubs 'immunity'....I hope they're embarrassed to a well-known hot-spot and back....

I am counting on the world community to do what this administration might not be willing to do.

.....and I really like President Obama....but I think his 'bi-partisanship' has gotten a little out of whack.

Christopher di Spirito's picture

I'm hearing Obama is backing away from the 16 month promise of US Troop withdrawal from Iraq.

If his "O"-ness screws up, the voters will toss him out in 2012. The American people have had it with these politicians.

jimbojames's picture

the people will re-elect Obama. Just look at 2004. The problem is that it is a total flim-flam sideshow because nothing that he promised to get elected (change from the Bush policies, universal healthcare and ending the wars) will happen. He probably will continue tax cuts for the rich, no reduction of the military, no recovery of the billions, if not trillions, illegally acquired during the bush years and beyond. For example, what really pisses me off is that Obama is not making the rich in America pay for the stimulus package. The 800 billion should not be borrowed it should be taken from the likes of Bloomberg, Gates and every other CEO and old-money family in America. That would be change indeed.

Jo's picture

come out NOW and either deny this allegation of Bond's or he will look like a liar later.

Steve E's picture

Right on, come now Holder deny any private assurances you made to Bond, in person, for the record. Holder apparently let his aide do the denying. Bullshit transparency.

"Is there anyone more pathetic than Arlen Specter?"

Yeah. Everyone that fell for his magic bullet theory on the JFK death.

Janeane The Acerbic Goblin's picture

According to Rove and Specter, Eric Holder was this week's "most evil man in the universe", and had to be stopped in order to "save" America.

Now, I guess he's a good guy.

Just an FYI - if you need a laugh today - Ted Haggard will be the guest on the Oprah Show.......LOL

Eric Holder approved by Judiciary Committee 17-2. One step closer to a real authentic Attorney General. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Tom Coburn (R-OK) voted no. 1/29

miss_kitty's picture

just retire now. Between the magic bullet theory and the friendship you had with murderer Ira Einhorn during your lawyering days, remember when he escaped and lived the high life in Europe for 20 years, How'd your buddy/client do that?

What is it that the good people of PA thinking when they cast a vote for a doddering old tosser like you anyway?

moonsha's picture

Arlen Specter has always been a snake in grass. He usually says he'll do something and then do the complete opposite. This man continues to get it wrong dating way back to the single bullet theory of the JFK assasination.

I would like to know what happen or was said in the "NON" transparent meeting behind closed doors Obama had with The Republican senators and House members to change their minds..

What did Obama give or promise to them to receive their blessing or votes..

No prosecution of Bush's administration for their many crimes and war crimes,, and destruction of our constitution , laws and country..

We either have laws or we do not..

Our laws were not setup for the elite and President to bypass them if he wish...

If we have no laws then we are outlaws..

None

As a resident of Pennsylvania, I can answer that:

No.

Next question.

We should find our since McCain controls two votes: his own and Lieberman's.

And if you're looking for senators more pathetic than Specter, look no farther than Joe Lieberman, the senior senator from Israel. I'll be glad when Joe gets the boot so Connecticut can have two senators again.
