As a Californian I want to thank Arnold for "NOTHING"
By John Amato Wednesday Jul 01, 2009 1:00pmArnold Schwarzenegger's ineptitude has led California into complete ruin. David Dayen had the latest updates from last night.
d-day: Late Night With The Legislature, End Of The World As We Know It Edition
It has been truly depressing to watch the Twitter feeds of John Myers and Scott Lay tonight, as the mood shifted from guardedly hopeful to despairing. The Senate keeps voting on things and not coming up with any solutions. They tried to pass the stop-gap solution again, and came up short of the votes needed. They passed the majority-vote budget with some fee increases, and the Governor vetoed them. Let's all please remember that. With a stroke of the pen, the Governor could have ended this.
If SB 64 and SB 80 (the stop-gap) don't pass by midnight (and actually, in an hour or so, because it takes a couple hours to prepare the necessary paperwork), the state will forfeit $3 billion in cuts to the 2008-09 budget year, which they will have to find in the following year, and a total of around $7 billion in total costs, when you add in the costs of additional borrowing, etc... read on
Keep reading if you want to get depressed. This is a great state and in Arnold's hands, it's going down the tubes and fast.

If you're a Democrat, you're accused of conspiring with ACORN to steal the election, or you get recalled, or impeached.
If you're a Republican, you get defended from criticism, or appointed by the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, the "liberal media" looks on and dutifully parrots the right-wing spin...
"liberal media" = Corporate owned and run media.

and Ronny Reagan are not around to see Arnold undo all the good they did for past their prime actors seeking new venues in which to perform.
but seriously, what is up with Californians and their politicians?!?
To the voters of California: You got what you asked for.
*
I guess Californians watched too many of Arnold's pointless, excessively violent, shitty movies and somehow thought he could rescue their state like the many skanks in his films. The same type of vegetated voters who are moonwalking around the Neverland Ranch tonight. Lol.
I didn't ask for this....I knew the recall of Gray Davis was wrong and the Governator was the wrong choice. That happened because of lying, cheating, and stealing by the "morally superior" conservative Republicans and their stupid and blind followers.
if we'd elected the hooker or the N.O.R.M.L. attorney.
..without Prop 13.
The citizens of California, over the years, have put so many mandated spending laws into the state constitution that they have created a Gordian Knot that nobody can unravel.
This state needs a new constitution, and only a constitutional convention can get us there.
I'm no fan of Ahnold, but the people of Kalifornia need to bear some of this burden for their stupid ballot proposals (like the 2/3 rule for tax raises).
say it right. It's KAH-LEE-FWAWN-YA.
It's just incredible to me that, this clown was ever elected. I am a native Californian, and so many of us are atarstruck. They elected and action hero and he attempted to bully people into follow his lead. Unfortunately, that only works in gangs, and in the movies.
during the "energy" crisis, there was one....ONE...person in all of the media who nightly informed his listening public what really was going on....mr kabc
since no one correctly reported the real issues, or why a raise on car registration was a minor tax that would hurt less than a major tax down the road...the recall won overwhelmingly
i voted against it....and voted for mary carey...who wouldve made a great gov...her boobs alone wouldve brought it millions in biz
How much longer does he have left of his term?
The same way we did Gray Davis????
Anyone??
Anyone??
Who could afford to finance a recall?
Let's remember who led the charge for Arnie to start with - Rep. Daryl Issa (R-CA)..."R" - California....Issa should take a LONG vacation since most of this stupidity is his fault...
This is all the Republican's faults. Key word. this. Their argument for years against raising taxes is that we have a "spending problem" not a "revenue problem".
And up until now .. that has been true (see comment above regarding the stupid initiative process and associated special interest and unfunded mandates!)
NOW?? It is a SERIOUS revenue problem.. But they are stuck on "No Taxes!"
Actually, we have a RIDICULOUSLY SERIOUS REVENUE PROBLEM!
Well, at least with the Repubs we can look forward to high user fees... Wanna go to the Beach ($250 parking fee), get a library card? (why not $700 annual fee). Get a business license? (a 5-year moratorium)
is also behind much of the crap that's going on in Sacramento right now. A bought and paid for employee of the Kahleefwawnya Yacht Party, he never met a cut in social services he didn't like.
Support the Million Can March this week.
California’s energy crisis, which was largely caused by Enron’s scandalous energy market manipulation, Schwarzenegger met with Ken Lay to discuss “fixing” California’s energy crisis. Plans to “get deregulation right this time” called for more rate increases, an end to state and federal investigations, and less regulation.
Yip
...is pretty obvious. It's time to think about privatizing California. I'm sure it would be run much more efficiently that way.
I like the sound of it!
... in fact the private industries in charge should be heralded by the same people who created this mess. it seems that "privatization pixie dust" has magical powers, and turns otherwise incompetent individuals into masterful managers. Such is the power of capitalism and free enterprise. Or so my libertarian acquittances have told me... however they are waay too smart for us mere mortals, so I may have missed something. But that is the gist of it, I think.
all hail the invisible middle fing... errrr I mean hand.
maybe this was the plan all along? budget fail signaling shock doctrine into privatization?
worst. governor. ever.
Yeah, i realized how wonderful privatization was when I realized that we had our first franchised war going on and the Walter Reed and VA scandals started popping up.
The whole country will be following suit.
And then, the entire planet.
We have peak homo sapiens.
....and its all DOWNHILL from here....
green shoots fugue.
Can you moonwalk to that jingle?
We just want to . . .
The Obama campaign won the prestigious Cannes marketing award.
Obama for America, yes, we Cannes.
The people ate it up.
They watch their TeeVees and they believe the shit.
Not me.
Would be a fitting re-election campaign...
exists, because a whole lot of Democrats voted for him, or so I remember from the news of the time. I remember thinking "You'll be sorry..." when reading about Democrats who voiced their intentions to vote for him. Republicans of any persuasion are not to be trusted or allowed to have power.
the medal of freedom for this job.
I IOU him a swift kick in the ass...
...and a bus ticket out of town!
Starting today Florida slapped a dollar a pack sales tax on cigarettes and doubled the price for renewing your drivers license. I don't know if we'll have less smokers or less drivers.
sucked into a cosmic vortex never to be seen again under Arnie's brilliant tenure?
banning any Austrian-born individual from assuming power anywhere else in the world other than their native Alpine land.
So far their hitting average is pretty dismal.
Maybe while the UN is at it, they could apply the same ban to
TexasConnecticut.Austrian economics?
Something incredibly rotten is in that land. Wasn't there a case recently in which an Austrian father had kidnapped in a cell and rapped his daughter on an almost daily basis for like 15 years straight?
It seems Austria's main export is misery for others...
wonder if there's a reason why the French at that time called her "that Austrian woman" and "the Austrian bitch" with such disdain...
sympathy for MA than Ahnold. At least she didn't deliberately steal from the less fortunate.
for handouts and keep doing the same thing he's been doing while praising the glory of cheap labor.
Forty-nine other governors will line up behind Arnold and everybody in the world will see what a farce our goverment has turned into.
I am so tempted to say something about what my governor might be doing while waiting in that line, but I better not.
Applying self-tanning lotion?
Is he?
Tell them that we need to stop firing good soldiers because they are Gay. This needs to be stopped right away. I just saw a wonderful Veteran of 10 years, a Vet of Iraq and Afghanistan who speaks Arabic who is being fired because he admitted he was GAY.
Americans have to make some noise about this, Write, Call, FAX your Congress Person Now.
we'll just borrow money to stay afloat.
Sheesh
that California can make a comeback from this. It may take months or years, but I think they can do it. I feel sorry for the citizens.
Arnold needs the boot.
He's a terrible actor and, apparently, even worse as governor.
What were people thinking?
I think the very first IOU should be the governor's paycheck, followed immediately by every Republican in the capital. Heck, they should've stopped giving them real paychecks a long time back.
Probably didn't want the responsibility that would actually go with accepting a check from the taxpayers to interfere with his service to the Yacht Party... you know... the ones the really BIG bucks come from.
Schwarzenegger's conservative agenda is killing California just like Bush's conservative agenda damn near killed America. Why do Republicans hate people? Because they are evil extremists and always put Party ahead of reality.
The California Senate had a budget, Evil Schwarzenegger refused to sign it. Schwarzenegger's pissed because the people refused his failed and fake propositions and he wants to make us suffer. He is evil. Never ever vote for a Republican. They are evil extremists.
Why would anyone think a body-builder and a bad actor would know how to govern anybody, much less California? Didn't Californians learn anything about government when Ronnie Raygun was in their midst and then tripped off to Capitol Hill?
Sorry, but body-builders cum actors with bad accents need to stick to their areas of expertise, and it ain't government. I will never understand why Maria Schriver married him.
I was a state employee for many years that encompassed both of St. Ron's terms. If y'all had asked me, I could have told you what he was like but nOOOoooOOOooo! Virtually every fricking state in the union had to make the same damned mistake and that time he got his hooks into the whole damned country.
It is NOT California's fault you didn't pay attention.
Everybody else paying attention wasn't the problem.
California put two 2-bit actors into the political system, and yes, all of us paid for Reagan. But I sure didn't vote for him -- he was so inexperienced I was sure he'd treat the presidency as if he were in a 40s movie... Nancy and her astrologers didn't help either.
San Andreas Fault ;-)
Your words are true and need repeating...
"WITH A STROKE OF THE PEN, THE GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER COULD HAVE ENDED THIS!!!"
"The Senate keeps voting on things and not coming up with any solutions. They tried to pass the stop-gap solution again, and came up short of the votes needed. They passed the majority-vote budget with some fee increases, and the Governor vetoed them. Let's all please remember that. With a stroke of the pen, the Governor could have ended this."
"WITH A STROKE OF THE PEN, THE GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER COULD HAVE ENDED THIS!!!"
Expect a crappy performance.
Californians, you voted for an idiot Republican, and you got your wish.
the only ones to blame are the people who voted for Arnold. HE IS AN ACTOR! Did we learn NOTHING AT ALL from the election of Ronald Reagan?! If you want a mechanic to work on your car, you DO NOT take your car to a copy services business... same thing. We should NEVER elect people based upon celebrity!
And you didn't get out and vote YES on Prop 1A, then shame on you. That said, I wish all my Golden Staters would join me at every opportunity to demand that the Republican legislators produce their own balanced budget! With details!
This should be done every year, but I especially want to see what the GOP would do to balance the budget, and let the sun shine on it for every Californian to see.
can't understand why so many people see a problem with a 'government' death. There will be plenty of property laying around that allegedly belonged to the 'state/government'. Just lay claim to any of that property that you want and enjoy it.
Another thing, since it will belong to you I'm sure that you will manage it very well.
I got Humboldt Redwoods State Park as mine. Entry fees will be very small.
Congratulations!!
Feds could seize Calif. parks if closed by budget
Like that phony Kos, who was strangely silent on scandalous Enron-based Arnie's election and re-election, which leads me to believe he voted for him. I have no doubt he did given Kos's conservative inner-child and his weird silence on Arnie until much too late. But then, there were lots of Kossacks and other Democrats who for some reason decided this particular Republican was okay to vote for. Suckers.
It's a disaster. We need a new constitutional convention, or something, but right now the budget process is insane, and being held up by truly crazy people.
All I hear from my family is 'I'm not paying more tax's'! I can't believe I'm moving back after being away for so long. I live in WA right now, which pays higher tax's over all then California.
WTF do people honestly think services are free?
Its also amazing that the Gov believes that low income children and the impoverished are the problem. Really? Way to play on the racist card, unfortunately there are alot of white people pulling that string as well.
I just read that the Feds are talking about taking over the state parks because Arnold wants to close those, man I really hope that happens, that way he can't sell them off for some mini mall project in the future.
They won't get mine. (Check above)
...into complete ruin."
I don't know, John, it seems like the people of California deserve the lion's share of credit for this mess. After all, it was the people who originally passed Prop 13; and it was the people who elected Arnold and all the losers in the legislature.
Naturally, there are lots of people (you're probably one) who deserve none of the blame personally, but as a whole, it was the people who created this mess.
Just like the people of Illinois created Blago and Ryan (not actors of course but machine politicians), Just like the people of SC created Mark Sanford (who was less than successful in private business, Just like the people of Alaska created Sarah Palin (whom I don't need to say anything about), and last but certainly not least, Just like the people of Texas created George W Bush (Draft dodging coke snorting perrenial frat boy and utterly failed businessman) who later went on to higher office just like Reagan did.
Have you all looked in your own closets before you start with how stupid Californians are? Might be surprised what you find lurking in the dark corners.
I think that the voters of California are as much to blame as Arnold. For years they have demanded services, and then tied the hands of the legislature when the time came to pay for those services. They have never seen a tax they didn't hate and subsequently vote against, and foolishly voted out Grey Davis and bought Arnolds' crap, hook line and sinker.Maybe now, a little common sense, and a longer view of reality might finally take hold. Although they have yet to own up to their own hand in the matter so it may take a while.
Amato is shifting the entire blame for the present just because he doesn't like the Republican governor's policies. It's legitimate to complain about the governor's ideology when you don't agree with it, but blaming him for the entire situation is partisan hackery.
2004-5 expenditures $81b
2005-6 expenditures $92b
2006-7 expenditures $101b
2007-8 expenditures $102b
2008-9 expenditures $103b
2009-2010 originally budgeted expenditures $111.1b
The current proposal with all budget solutions is a $92b budget. It's the same fucking amount of spending you guys had in 2005-6.The 2001 budget was $79 billion.
California spends way too much money.
California spends way too much money on prisons.
Fixed it for you.
Where are you getting these numbers?
http://www.dof.ca.gov/budget/historical/2009-10/
Ain't nobody can create a clusterfuck like a republican.
It is one of the greatest mysteries of my life - watching people who are getting screwed every which way; go out and re-elect these morons over and over again.
when Davis was recalled and Arnie was running. You couldn't talk sense to anyone. They all thought it would be so neat if Arnie was gov.
California didn't just ask for this, they demanded it.
I'm sorry, I love CA., but they fucked up big time.
my sheet of Arnoldbuck's waiting to be used.
Arnoldbuck - IOU real money
I want to thank the RepuglyKKKans for NOthing!!!!!!!!!
Didn't quite work out, eh? Perhaps it's time for less telegenic policy grownups. So long as voters are enamoured with personalities over policy positions the outcomes will always resemble high school elections.
Then again Glenn Beck gets ratings for playing with barbies so what the hell?
My SSI has been cut $57 (because of the cost of living in CA the state suppliments the federal amount) and my son's cash aid has been cut $15 for a total of $62 per month. That equals about a 6% decrease in income.
If my income decreases why the hell can't the millionaires help pay for the mess they helped create and pay a 6% increase in taxes??
It's called screw the poor and infirmed.
Missouri state rep. Cynthia Davis(R) opposes free lunch for school kids saying, "hunger can be a positive motivator". Reagan used to muse that people were homeless because they didn't get along with their families.
So walk it off like a good patriot and wave a flag for relief.
California needs to terminate the terminator
before the terminator terminates California.
Too bad, Arnold didn't take his movie job
training seriously. From his training and
experience in the movie Kindergarden Cop,
he would have been a perfect kindergarden
cop.
