Did CBS lie to us about the Tim Tebow ads to draw national attention to them?
(I'm posting this only because I smell something rotten in Denmark, or rather, on CBS.)
Did you see the Tim Tebow ad that actually aired during the Super Bowl yesterday? The only one I saw was much different than what CBS told us was going to air during the game and which drew a ton of controversy all across the blogosphere and throughout the pro-choice movement. What I saw was not controversial and didn't even talk about the abortion issues that were supposed to be aired. The LA Times said: Tebow ad falls short of the hype
Here's some CBS reporting which helped get the controversy going on January 26th and then the 27th.
The 30-second commercial is expected to recount the story of Pam Tebow's pregnancy in 1987. After getting sick during a mission trip to the Philippines, she ignored a recommendation by doctors to abort her fifth child.
She later gave birth to Tim, who won the 2007 Heisman Trophy and helped the Florida Gators win two BCS championships.
CBS said Tuesday that the decision to air the Tebow ad reflected a change in its policies toward advocacy spots that has evolved over the past several years.
"We have for some time moderated our approach to advocacy submissions after it became apparent that our stance did not reflect public sentiment or industry norms," said spokesman Dana McClintock. "In fact, most media outlets have accepted advocacy ads for some time."
These ads had nothing to do with advocacy on the abortion issue. I think either CBS or Focus on the Family (or both) pulled a fast one on America and they should be called out on it. Not only that they should be panned roundly by the media for providing false journalism and advertising to drum up buzz for the commercial. Shameful, just shameful.

Dishonesty to advance one's cause. Wow. Money talks, and...you know the rest.
did CBS or focus on the family do a bait and switch?
perhaps the ad that they shared with NOW was different (and much more inflammatory) and once enough people had been riled up, they switched the ads to make the critics look stupid.
http://www.now.org/issues/media/hall-of-shame...
don't you? The ad turned out not to be controversial, or to mention anything about abortion at all and STILL you people are angry. And I know why: IT"S BECAUSE THEY GAMED YOU! They knew that all liberals everywhere would be furious if they put out word of an upcoming pro-life ad, counting on your overreaction to sell news and bring in more viewers. And you played right into their hands by getting outraged over nothing! CBS has clever marketers. Stop whining because they outsmarted you!

So you're one of those people who think that if their children got a good grade on a test because they cheated... It's totally cool. The ends justify the means?

pregnancy, only it's lots, lots more subtle than anyone thought it would be. No mention of her choosing not to abort, but the ad still had the "celebrate life" at the end, and it told people to go to the Focus on the Family site to read the whole story of Pam Tebow's pregnancy.
I'm considering holding my nose and going to Focus on the Family's website to see what it says...
"The greatest tyranny is censoring information in order to be better able to control people." - Cristina Saralegui
first things at the website is the video of the full story/claim the Tebow's make about Pam's pregnancy.
So it was very subtle and sneaky, and well planned to bring people to read their (Focus on the Family) woman-hating, child-abusing bullshit.
"The greatest tyranny is censoring information in order to be better able to control people." - Cristina Saralegui
you fell into their trap. Don't let spammers know how gullible you are or they'll begin requesting your bank information.

"The greatest tyranny is censoring information in order to be better able to control people." - Cristina Saralegui
How in the HELL is the video woman-hating, child-abusing? Please answer me on that. They told their story. That is it. Yes it was very religiously bent. But explain how it hated women or espoused abuse?
Did you have an abortion and now feel the need to justify it? Is that why you are bashing the Tebow family? Or anyone that protests abortion? Do you feel guilty about it and are trying to make yourself feel better? Why the fuck do you think you should bash people that try to bring babies into this world? Hell okay they maybe unwanted or uncared for, but by that standard you should approve of the military going into Haiti and just gunning down the kids there. The parents can't take care of them why not just kill them. Yes I know this if inflammatory but I want an honest answer. If it is okay to abort a healthy baby why should we spend billions to save them?
"How in the HELL is the video woman-hating, child-abusing? Please answer me on that."
Annaleigh was talking about the FoF website and argument, not the video ad.
There is your answer, and now you really should do something about that big 'ol block of text full of misdirected hate and accusations aimed at Annaleigh. Don't you feel like a fool now?
There is a huge difference between the kids in Haiti and an abortion. I say this as a mother of 2, one being 6 months old. Had I had a spontaneous abortion (that's the medical term for a miscarriage, by the way), I would have been very sad. If someone had killed my 6 year old or he had died, I doubt I would want to continue my life.
So Tim, you think it is perfectly okay to bring unwanted children in the world? What do you do to help them? How do you tell a 13 year old girl knocked up by a relative or a family friend to go on and have that baby, nevermind the circumstances of conception-- it's a baybeee!
And yes, FoF is certainly an advocate of child-abuse, since they say that parents should be able to beat their children.
How fucking dare you ask Annaleigh if she were justifying something because she doesn't agree with your outdated, bullshit ideas? Have you ever met a child that was born and unwanted by it's mother? I have, and to her credit, my mother did not fuck us up too badly, considering what a piece of shit her mother was. My mother constantly sought approval from the drunken old c**t until the day my "grandmother" died. I guess you were lucky Tim, your mother never told you that if there was a way she could've gotten rid of you other than giving you away, she would have. And no, I have no feelings either way about my grandmother continuing her pregnancy. I have no say in the matter of my existience.
Tim, Tim, Tim, I was referring to Focus on the Family's website in general, and their work in general.
I used to be an evangelical. I have read several of their books on parenting, and their books oriented towards women. They DO condone child abuse, and their attitudes towards women ARE that of hatred.
Holy shit.
And no, I have never had an abortion. And God forbid I were to be raped again and become pregnant, or if I get back together with my ex tomorrow and wind up pregnant, I would not want to abort. However, as someone who could potentially get pregnant, I want to know that only one woman's fortunate, happy outcome will not be used to force me or another woman to continue a pregnancy if we have been raped or if the pregnancy is fucking killing us, thank you very much.

...well, personally I think abortion should be legal, and mandatory in cases of rape, molestation or retardation of the fetus, but, that is an opinion, albeit maybe a rather extreme one...but...I guess other so-called "extreme" opinions are not to be tolerated? Pretty harmless ad, if you ask me, and lets face it, NOBODY is going to leave the big game to log onto some preachy soccer-mom website. Tempest, meet teapot.
allowed Planned Parenthood to have a Super Bowl ad?
Hell no. An ad reminding women they have reproductive choice and letting them know ways to exercise that choice is "too controversial," but an ad for a group that wants to take those choices away from women is just fine with them.
It's the hypocrisy.

PP could never afford it, which is how most ads prices are meant to be.
afford it? They get Gov funding along with other contributions. FoTF only gets voluntary contributions, yet they can afford it.
..choice too. Of course, not much of one or much of a chance getting a safe abortion in the Phillipines but she made a choice which I'm sure fotf doesn't really want women to have.

abortion be mandatorily available, and not the abortion being actually required. Part of the horror of rape is the victim loses control of her body and her person, so allowing her to choose what to do in event of a pregnancy is one of the first steps to giving her her power back. And not every rape survivor wants to abort a pregnancy that resulted from rape.
"The greatest tyranny is censoring information in order to be better able to control people." - Cristina Saralegui
and I quote ...well, personally I think abortion should be legal, and mandatory in cases of rape, molestation or retardation of the fetus, From what he says I'm thinking required.
There are a lot of rapists out there that rape purely for the sake of fathering children. If they knew that a pregnancy as a result of their crime would absolutely 100% be terminated it would prevent all of those types of rapes, and even seriously discourage other rapists who don't rape for that sole reason.
Hate to say it, but that mandatory abortions would probably cut rape cases in half.
A lot of rapist only rape to father a child? Where did you hear that? Any studies? Cite please

How is this any different than Amato pimping his agenda (and website) on The Randi Rhodes Show?

Shameful...

When was the last time any of us followed a web site we saw on a tv commercial? Who even remembers the site address after it shows up in an ad? Most people watching the game didn't fly to the computer to check out the website because that wasn't why they were in front of their tvs. A commercial that begins that way tells most football fans they have time for a bathroom break or a trip to the frig.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

it's the Dentu-cream of CBS watchers.
I boycotted watching the game and it's adverts because of CBS double standard regarding advertisers.
You link to CBS "reporting" which helped get the controversy going. The first link is to an obscure CBS blog by the producer of "48 Hours" on 1/26/10. The second link, stated to be from 1/27/10, went nowhere when I clicked on it.
The 1/26 blog post gives credit to AP for its content, and the part you reproduce omits the fact that it is based on the protests by women's groups of the as yet unseen ad.
The controvery began by at least 1/24/10 based on comments Tebow is said to have made at the Senior Bowl. I say this because of a 1/25/10 AP article which contains the wording the CBS blog used the next day which you post here. "The ad is expected to recount...."
"The ad - paid for by the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family - is expected to recount the story of Pam Tebow's pregnancy in 1987 with a theme of "Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life." After getting sick during a mission trip to the Philippines, she ignored a recommendation by doctors to abort her fifth child and gave birth to Tim, who went on to win the 2007 Heisman Trophy while helping his Florida team to two BCS championships.
The controversy over the ad was raised Sunday when Tebow met with reporters in Mobile, Ala., before beginning preparations for next weekend's Senior Bowl."
When you first reported this here at C&L I noted your post had links to a football blog post about the eye-black with bibilical quotes
Tebow wore in football games. You later added a link to a Washington Post article which covered the ad in question. It also ran on 1/25/10 and was by the AP and is identical to the one I quote above. It also cointains this quote from a Focus on the Family spokesperson:
Schneeberger said he and his colleagues "were a little surprised" at the furor over the ad.
"There's nothing political and controversial about it," he said. "When the day arrives, and you sit down to watch the game on TV, those who oppose it will be quite surprised at what the ad is all about."
Many attacked the ad without seeing it. C&L ran a post attacking the veracity of the story as told by Ms. Tebow based on Phillipine law. It was based on links to blogs linked to other blogs all leading back to Gloria Allred.
Then the ad ran. It was fluff. Abortion was not mentioned. It said go the a website for the whole story.
Now, you ask the question "Did CBS lie to us?" You base your question on a CBS blog reporting controversy that began earlier based on a wire story from the day before the blog article was posted. Isn't that the tactic Jon Stewart called Neil Cavuto out for using on FOX?
Couldn't it also be asked; Did pro-choice groups overreact and call more attention to this ad in doing so? Just asking.

shown on Larry King about a week ago. With commentators. It was informative enough. The controversy was, at least as I understood it, CBS refusing to run the ad for the dating service, but intending to run the ad for the anti-abortion FOF group. This is a political statement. is more interested in a beer commercial than a pro-life ad. I think much more harm was done to CBS prior to the running of the ad that any impact the ad might have had. It exposed CBS as a corporate aggenda driven enterprise. Most Superbowl viewers had forgotten the ad five minutes after it aired.
Or were too far into the cocktails to remember it.

For Christians that poopoo this, it was discrimination because they refused to give air time to gay and other interest groups.
