Sheppard Smith: No Media Bias against John McCain
By John Amato Thursday Nov 13, 2008 11:00amSheppard Smith has been full of surprises lately. First he smacks down wingnut extraordinaire Joe the Plumber and then he smacks down Nick DiPaolo.
DiPaolo:...the MSM being so in the tank for Obama...
Smith: Oh, please. That's preposterous. (Why?)
The MSM reflected what was happening in this nation. It did not drive it. The blogs didn't drive this movement, the media didn't drive this movement. Barack Obama did not lose this election. It was his to lose. It was not John McCain's to win. The Republicans had no shot unless the Democrats gave it to them and they didn't and to blame the media is a cop out and ridiculous....DiPaolo The MSM has been liberal since its inception. It's years and years of pounding...
Smith: How did George Bush win twice?
DiPaolo: I don't know. Karl Rove is a genius.
We can debate some of the merits of Smith's argument, but his central point about media bias in this election is correct. And Karl Rove embodies everything that is wrong with American politics.

is seriously fucking with my head.
We have to remember that Mr. Smith is paid to be "balanced". Whether or not those are his true views is a mystery. FOX News knows it can't always be perceived as an extension of the right wing of the Republican Party.
I think Shepard Smith is a fair guy working for biased station.
Said the memo:It's not about fairness, it's about our phony baloney jobs!
He obviously wants to be relevant. Who can blame him?
I am staring at an ad with the line "ready to kiss your paycheck goodbye?" and a picture of Obama waving, the link goes to a site with this to say
"Obama wins Presidential election: Ready to kiss your paycheck goodbye?
John McCain's tax proposal would have given tax cuts to all Americans, but now we are all going to be subjected to Barack Obama's tax plan. John McCain's tax cuts would have gotten bigger as you moved up the income ladder, giving all Americans an incentive to better themselves. Obama's tax plan, on the hand, gives tax cuts that shrink with increasing income and even goes so far as to increase taxes on the wealthiest families.
>
When you consider all of the policies that Barack Obama has proposed, you have to wonder whether he can even give anyone tax cuts and still fund his policies. The more likely scenario is that Obama will be unable to fulfill at least one end of that seesaw. Are you ready to see your hard-earned tax dollars go to people who make less than you?"
WTF C&L? Who let the barbarian hordes inside the gates? Can we get a site without offensive right wing slime ads? Whats next, ads for the KKK?
is nick dipaolo and why does anyone give a rat's ass what he thinks?
methinks shepard and fox will part ways when his contract is up. he's getting bent from the weight of the lies and deception.
.
Is a douche bag comic/Howard Stern semi-regular. He eats from the scraps on Artie Lange's table, and as a former joke writer for Chris Rock. That's his former claim to fame. Now he's a semi regular on Fixed Noise, looking to become the next asshat repub comic next to Dennis Miller.
Sounds like Nick's love life ;-)
will probably be another one on the Daily Show's segment "Who The F*ck Is That Guy?"
All politics aside, Shepherd Smith seems like a reasonable man. It's refreshing to see someone in that setting who is at least willing to acknowledge reality, even if their interpretation of it differs from my own.
Too many of these people are like the man he was arguing with. If you point out an inconsistency in their argument, as Smith did, they just dismiss it and reassert their point at a higher volume.
Actually I find them kind of funny. Hey I'm ready to kiss my paycheck goodbye and give ALL my wealth to the poor! Oh wait, I don't have any wealth.. never mind.
Either Shep has seen the light or he believes that Fixed News will not be on the air for long with neo-cons sidelined and he is looking for a job at MSNBC ala Joe Scrotum-brau
Where's he gettin all this....this...intestinal fortitude?!?!
Could he be getting sick of all the blind, ignorant hate coming from his interviewees, and his coworkers?
Let's not give him too hard a time...if he wants to defect from the dark side...I say we welcome him with a cold beer, and a pat on the back.
A rat fleeing from a sinking ship is still a rat. If he asks for a life preserver, throw him an anchor.
I am fighting the urge to like Smith these days. LOL.
Well if McCain didn't win the election because of the media, well then they need to go yell at Fox. Obviously they didn't do their job. Fox is part of the media, no? Argh, stupid asshole, take some ownership of your life already. Always playing the victims when it's convenient.
Yet more proof that "Karl Rove is a genius" is more apologist meme than abject reality.
More like an evil genius. Anybody that can get George W elected must be good at something. Lee Atwater would have been proud of the monster he created.
What you will say of him, it is good to see at least SOMEONE besides Alan Colmes (sometimes) to at least TRY and act as a voice of semi-reason.
I am not buying it, Smith is trying to make FOX acceptable because most of the government is now under Democratic control. They can easily become irrelevant if they do not get the controlling party on their shows. Democrats could refuse to appear, and I wish they would, and you will see allot more of this in the coming days. If McCain would have won their pro republican slant would have even become sharper.
Exactly.
Who the Hell is this Dipaolo and what the fuck are his qualifications?
Smith better watch his back in the halls of Fox.
Nick Dipalo is a comedian/ radio host (according to his website) He's a frequent guest on Howard Stern as a comrade of Artie Lange. He ain't that funny, but he's even less logical.
Are you guys hiring a copy editor at any time? I'll throw my hat in the ring.
I can't believe this scumbag has actually surfaced.
I guess they are trying to get him as the angry everyday Joe the Plumber with a comic twist.
His act is old too. If you've heard Lange and other "Cringe Comics" like O'Neil, Norton, Kelly, C.K., than you heard him.
"I don't know."
How did George Bush win twice? "I don't know"
How did John McCain choose Sarah Palin? "I don't know."
What went wrong with the Republican Party? "I don't know."
Is Obama a Muslim? "I don't know"
Is Obama a Socialist? "I dont' know"
Is Obama a Communist? "I don't know"
Is Sarah Palin qualified to be POTUS? "I don't know"
Is the earth flat? "I don't know"
Are all toothpastes alike? "I don't know"
Shit in the woods?
I don't know.
That's BEARS, I have seen it in the Charmin Ultra commericals.
Bears are, after all the greatest threat to our nation.
Next to pasteurized processed cheese food...
You are pretty stupid.....anybody ever tell you that?
MSM doesn't have a liberal bias. Truth has a liberal bias.
"Truth" isn't the right word as it is of use only in logic and mathematics. "The most accurate depiction of reality" has a liberal bias -- might be better. Sorry to nitpick about words but language is important.
The clear pro-McCain prop job by the media.
How else can you explain how a guy who finished at the bottom of his graduating class, whose only achievement in life was to be capture by the enemy, who was involved in one of the biggest financial scandals in the 80s, who fucked the families of the MIA royaly, among other things... How else do you explain how this dimwit was not only running for president, but had an actual shot at becoming one.
Amazing, Fox news people aren't even believing their own bullshit anymore...
Shepard Smith is figuring out that if he plays his cards right...maybe he can take Scarborough's spot on MSNBC and vice versa.
All would be happy.
If you remember correctly, he has a huge beef with Papa Bear. He called him out when he had his old show "Scarborough Country" before he picked up Imus' old slot. And he challenged BillO to a Conservative debate; which, might I add he has yet to respond to.
...of both participants integrity? If Lori Klausutis could speak from beyond the grave, she would tell you that Scarborough is cabable of doing anything.
Oh please let it happen. Even if I didn't agree with everything Shep said, at least his voice wouldn't be as irritating as Joe's.
A leapord does not change it's spots. Fox has made him a token 'central' to try and stop their rating crash.
Well someone's gotta do it. FOX is basically on the roller coaster ride of their life. The cart just derailed and they have to find a way to save their ass.
Obama won the election, because the electorate felt he was the best man for the job.
McCain didn't lose because he chose Palin, or because his team screwed up, or for any reason other than it was a choice between Obama and four more years of the same neocon crap (McCain is a PNAC signatory). Any other reason than Obama presented the opportunity for a fresh new approach is purely the sound of sour grapes being mashed.
its about time someone spoke up to say much of the way media covers any specific event is reflective of the population, kinda like how ESPN does nothing but talk about the yankees, red sox, patriots, ect. they show the people what they want to see. the MSM is a business, lets not forget. its just weird to hear it from ol' shep smith.
I would say shyster. Rummy is no dummy but he is no Genius......
Nick Depaulo?!
This guy couldn't get a gig on Comedy Central's Roasts (and they hire Andy Dick!) and Fox talks politics with him!?
I woke up in mirror universe today.
That's where I got used to seeing him - The Pam Anderson Roast, Denis Leary Roast, Jeff Foxworthy Roast. Maybe it was a stunt double doing all those roasts. I don't know, I guess the same double did Tough Crowd, Shorties watching Shorties, all his half hour specials - I've seen him on comedy central a thousand times. That post really made no sense.
This was from Fox News? Next you'll tell me an African-American has been elected POTUS. Can Republican Ted Stevens of Alaska be defeated by a Democrat? What's happening to our world???
We all know the pay is great, and you get to hang out with the Fox babes and Rush and Brillo and Fox and Friends, but maybe it's all getting to be too much for Sheppard Smith.
If so, I think it started in New Orleans.
We shall see if he is capable of further evolution.
Sheppard's role is to play the balanced part of "Fair and Balanced". They are setting themselves up to fight any new rules for broadcasting.
You heard it here first.
Well let's face it, Obama is interesting and intelligent. McCain has had his story told for dozens of years and when he did go one on one with the media, he made mistakes that he shouldn't have made. The media goes where the public interest is at the time.
So many of these idiot talking-heads are trying to distill Obama's win into one easy talking point that they can wrap their dim heads around. Fact is that Obama won because of a number of factors that worked in his favor. His was a perfect storm of colliding issues that woke the majority of the American public out of its Idol-induced stupor and got them out to vote.
Another factor that hasn't been talked about is the under-35 vote, also known as the Millenials. Here is a large population that typically stay home during election season because they are turned off and cynical about the electoral process, and who's to blame them? However this time around they had someone they could believe in, someone who spoke to them and used the tools that they understand: the internet. These talking heads cannot seem to fathom the fact that this time around, it was the INTERNET that allowed Obama to spread his message and tap into the grassroots anger that exists towards Bush and the Republicans. These right-wingers cannot grasp the power of blogging and alternative news media because they are still stuck in the last century, as evidenced by their continued use of McCarthy-esque buzzwords and social agendas that are way past their shelf life.
Well, reality sure hit them in the head, and if they continue to deny reality, well they're quickly going to become the dinosaur party.
We went out to dinner election night. The girl who waited on us was probably in her very early 20s. She had the sticker on her shirt that said "I Voted". I praised her for voting and she said, They say one vote doesn't make a difference and all, but I had to vote because I think this time my vote might make a difference. Then she smiled and said, I voted for Obama!
"So many of these idiot talking-heads are trying to distill Obama's win into one easy talking point that they can wrap their dim heads around. Fact is that Obama won because of a number of factors that worked in his favor."
Too much thinking... must ridicule...
j/k, of course.
during katrina.
He didn't.
If the media was liberal we'd be closing out Ralph Nader's second, successful term in office.
But no one (at least in the majority) votes 3rd party because they (the majority) are sheep.
Wingnuttery
When the MSM reports the reality of McCain, and they don't like it, they say they are biased. I'm sure there also exist plenty of 'biased' accounts on using dog turds as a sandwich spread.
I never heard of this DiPaolo...
After listening to him speak, I somehow doubt he attended Harvard or Princeton...
Except I didn't use the word "hell".
If the media is so liberal, how the f@%# does DiPaolo get on TV at all?
I don't know if the media has a particular Democratic or Republican bias, but on general political and economic issues there is a broadly "conservative" bias insofar as mainstream media does not sufficiently question underlying assumptions of our economy and political system. There is far less attention, for example, to labor issues than to finance and investing issues in the business press, for example.
I've watched Shepard Smith only a few times. I love his voice and personal style. He seems pretty good - way better than most others on Fox.
The MSM is NOT Liberal. Nor are they Conservative.
The media jumps on anyone who has a story that will sell ad time. The only time Conservatives whine about the "liberal media" is when the media jumps on a Conservative, which happens pretty damn frequently because the conservatives can't seem to stop themselves from doing stupid things.
Me thinks Mr. Smith is vying for his own show on Fox: Countup with Shepard Smith!
And I'm so disappointed. I love Nick DiPaolo as a comedian.
Some of you people really scare the crap out of me, with the lack of common sense and judgment .
A. It was disclosed and proven long ago , Fox trolls get a memo every morning , what to report and HOW to report .
B. No story , no angle gets said or discussed w/o permission from Ailes or higher ups .
C. And Shepard Smith is in no way way , shape or form going to be able to get away , with some perceived shift to the left , WITHOUT APPROVAL OR DIRECTION .
D. Fox has been losing ratings consistently over the last several months, therefore it would make sense for them give the illusion that they are offering left leaning opinions, and slightly changing their attack the left constantly business model .
This newscaster speaks with authority. His views come with a !pow! and a lot more. Sheppard Smith has on many occasions spoke out for Barack Obama and the causes associated with Liberal ideology. So, what is he doing at Fox News?
My guess is Smith will not be on Fox for long, or maybe his massage will be tamed. Being tamed does not strike me as something Smith will allow. Bottom line is he needs to go where he will be appreciated. When that happens, I will be their to hear his brand of truth.
Joseph
For a couple of week's now it seems like Fox has been trying to turn Smith into some sort of Edward R. Murrow paragon of exemplary journalism. If they do, it will be their first.
And as expected, when the tide turns, they'll be turning with it. You're going to see a lot of upset "conservatives."
That said, "Thank you." How DID Bush win two times if the "liberal" media is driving everything? I'll tell you what, Obama would have taken every state if the media were so goddamned liberal.
DiPaolo does sort of kill his own argument at the end of that clip... He says that the MSM has ALWAYS been liberal, that it drives and controls elections... but then says one man, Karl "I use the constitution for a wet nap" Rove managed to single handedly defeat it.....
RIGHT!!!
because...
Smith: How did George Bush win twice?
DiPaolo: I don't know. Karl Rove is a genius.
The real question is how does Fox and all the other right wingers continue to send BS through the airwaves and have it seem like reality. I just don't see it happening anymore and most of the Republicans left standing would agree with me I think. They've been served a dose of humble pie. Bill O'Reilly doesn't speak for them anymore.
Karl Rove's genius was his ability to hide behind the curtains and handle all the switches. It wasn't the promotion of a great candidate. He wasn't there for the country. It was selling a product. Somewhere a long the line he became exposed. Once the curtains were opened the magic was gone. It was just him manipulating the masses. It was him being dishonest. It was him feeding security into the different base population telling each of those populations exactly what they wanted to hear. He didn't care about follow through. He cared about getting his candidate elected. I really don't think he cares that Bush's approval rating is so dismal because it's not about Rove. Each person in that administration was a separate entity who was in it for their own gain.
Has anyone heard or seen Joe the Plumber since the election? Anyone smoked him out? That guy is dead meat. How can he go out in public anymore.
On TV now, Obama's barber. Joe the barber is ready to become first barber. First chef, first granny, what next first dentist?
I didn't realize there were annoying ads on this site. I too run NoScript, as well as Ad Block Plus.
Also, it seems Shep is angling for a job on another network, as I don't think F*cks Newz is going to let him continue with breaking the party (oops, I meant company) line.
All these guys on Faux News are doing is trying to get some "street creds" in the news business so that they can appear neutral or objective in the future. Smith and Wallace are playing the parts of the "fair and balanced" part of Faux News. You have to go back and see all the crap they did before this to understand who they really are. Don't have short memories. This is all a scam.
DiPaolo: The MSM has been liberal since its inception. It's years and years of pounding...
The Shepfather: Get de fuck outa here you piece o' garbage talkin' shit `bout shit you know nuttin' about! Take dis loud mouth piece o' shit outta de back, boys! Rough him up, break his legs, but don' kill `im ya hear me? Don' kill `im...I wans `im to suffer..."
1. I still think Shep is auditioning for MSNBC, knowing that Faux Noise days as number one are coming to and end.
2. The media IS liberal; from the viewpoint of any right wing, wacko, neocon's perspective. If it's left of their view, it's liberal to them. I'll grant them that, but I wish more people would make that comparison whenever the right tries to make this argument.
The moment I saw Smith on Fox News criticizing some right-winger, I knew he was the rescue squad for the network. He didn't start his schtick until it was evident that McCain was going to lose.
We need to find some way to make Fox completely irrelevant. They are a waste of time for the American citizen. Sheppard Smith is no more trustworthy than O'Reilly. It will still be a matter of them presenting what they want us to see and then lying by witholding pertinent info.
Go back and check the interviews he gave during this election cycle. One can tell he wasn't taking BS lightly.
Guess he's getting sick and tired of the Republiscum obsessions and lying hatred.
VegasRage comment sums it up pretty well:
"I think Shepard Smith is a fair guy working for biased station."
He has been a little "rebellious" lately. Hard to tell if he's just arguing points with the righties to make for entertaining viewing or a "devil's advocate" thing. He has always seemed to me to be the least opinionated Fox News person.
