Gov. Tim Pawlenty says he'll abide by the Minnesota Supreme Court's decision and sign the certificate
By John Amato Wednesday Jun 03, 2009 11:37am
A lot of speculation has been going on in the blogosphere about the commitment Pawlenty has in listening to the Minnesota Supreme Court since he announced that he wouldn't seek a third term in office. Many feel he'll just ignore the ruling of the court and let it drag on for years to placate the right wing base. Andrea Mitchell just about finished up an interview with Gov. Tim Pawlenty when she asked him if he would be signing the certificate which would in all likelihood make Al Franken the next Senator after the Minn. Supreme Court ruling is handed down. He said he would abide by the court's decision and take swift action and sign the certificate.
Mitchell: I know you've said you'll abide by the Supreme Court decision on the Franken Coleman race, do you expect that that will by all accounts lead to Al Franken being the next Senator from Minnesota? Isn't it time to get this resolved?
Pawlenty: Yea, we're anxious to get it resolved but I can't sign the certificate until the State court process is complete, we don't know who the winner is, but as soon as that process is complete and they give direction as to signing the certificate, I'm going to sign it, there's not going to be any undue delay or tactics like that so we'll follow the direction of the court.
We can only hope he's telling the truth and will sign the certificate even if Coleman takes it Federal. The Supreme court will be handing down their decision very soon.

can't we drag this out another couple months??? hooray!!!!!!!!!!
when can you tell any member of the gop is lying?
their lips are moving.
Pawsplenty's cooperative attitude makes my spidey sense tingle.
You made coffee come out of my nose!!
x
I still can't figure what came out of my nose.
Taste of it and find out!
But seriously...Pawlenty's gotta be up to something.
"We don't know who the winner is"
How did he really say this with a straight face?
The GOP are going to put out a hit on him. Lardboy himself might come calling,
Do you mean Mr. Bouncy-bouncy?
When I sees it. And I ain't holdin' my breath
I think Al Franken is going to be great Senator. No joke.
Franken is not a progressive. He is a Liberal. He is as mainstream a
politician as any we have up there now. He is also a Clintonista!!
Look at the people who payed for his campaign. He will fit in just
fine!! Just fine!!

What does it take to make yous guys even a LITTLE bit happy?
I'll believe it when it actually happens.
So if he does sign the certificate and Sore Loser Coleman takes it to SCOTUS, am I correct in assuming that Franken can still be seated while the Supremes decide on it?
Pawlenty could have signed the certificate at any point, and Franken could have been seated, regardless of any of Coleman's antics.
He just chose to drag it out.
I wish I could just believe him with no doubts, but since he is a republican, the doubt is there. I didn't put the doubt there, the republican party did.
I live in Pennsylvania and I Know Who The Winner Is!!
Where does he get off saying "I'll abide by the Court's decision."
It's not a friggin' choice! It's the LAW! Oh, I forgot, politicians and special corporate folks and bankers get to make up the rules as they go along. Screw Pull-enty.
yes it is the law that he has to sign, it isn't the law that he has to sign before SCOTUS decides or refuses to accept the case if Coleman pursues it.
is I really think that Coleman should be the senator because Franken is a comedian. What he didn't want to say is what a joke the republicans are in the senate now.
Franken is a comedian
Coleman is the joke
Well played!!!

I know how difficult law abiding is for you rotten entitled cocksuckers.
I've got five bucks that says he is pawlenty full of b.s.
He'll sign nothing, except a pay raise for himself. No wait, he can't do that, can he.?
He's left himself a loophole:
but as soon as that process is complete and they give direction as to signing the certificate, I'm going to sign it
There is a possibility they could certify Franken's win, but not instruct Pawlenty to issue a certificate.
That phrase jumped out at me too, for the same reason.
Who is this "they" he speaks of? That's kinda important.
I saw the same thing ... wouldn't put it past a slimy Repug.
I know it must be different, but how is this different from the SCOTUS handing the Lil Chimp Prince the presidency in Florida? Don't get me wrong; I want to see Franken seated. He WON. And One less GOoPer in the Senate is one less GOoPer in the Senate; good riddance to Dr Teeth. But I can't help but feel like this will be used as precedence by the ever-conniving neocons to steal other, more important (by whatever measuring stick these clowns use) elections. This current situation IS something the Minn. Supremes can rule on, right? They aren't just "gettin' involved" in something that isn't up to them to decide?
I feel like I am being set up, ya feel me?
Correct me if my paranoia is way off-base! I'd like that. But I iz just ruminatin' here....
The big difference here is that the Minnesota Supreme Court let all the votes be counted, whereas SCOTUS stopped the count and installed Bush.
I'm yanking this thought out of an undisclosed location, but I think Coleman took this to the Minn. state supreme court. They heard the case Monday I believe it was, and now everyone has to wait for their decision. I don't know how long they can wait before they come back with their decision.
I'm yanking this thought out of an undisclosed location
Sounds like my sex life.....
Yep, what Sierra Matt said. The Florida Supreme Court ordered a state-wide recount because the vote was so close, and Federal Supreme Court sided with Bush in Bush v Gore to STOP the recount and let Jeb go ahead and certify his li'l brother as the winner. Hard to believe.
Thanks, ya'll!
Simple, but very important differences.
I don't think he has any choice but to sign it once the State court process is complete.
to the law in MN it just says court if I remember correctly, doesn't specify which, he could take it to mean SCOTUS
He could have signed it months ago, but is finally seeing that it is hurting HIM politically.
Exactly. He's been under tremendous pressure from his party not to do it though -- and now he's saying he'll do the right thing. Late us better than never.

The longer it takes to get Sen. Franken seated, the more pawlenty looks like a GOP partisan hack.
If he has ANY presidential aspirations, he has to portray an image of a new spokesman for a new GOP. The longer this drama drags on, the worse it is for him.
I certainly don't like his chances in 2012 however.
He had to break a campaign spending promise on the last day of the election just to keep his current job from going to Mike Hatch.
I think the 35W bridge (not really his fault but the other GOPpers would most likely have a field day with in the primaries) and the current Coleman debacle may be enough to sink his chances.
"...and they give direction as to signing the certificate...." - I'm not holding my breath. If the Minnesota Supreme Court issues an order sustaining the lower Court ruling and does not expressly issue an order directing that the Governor sign the certificate, I wonder what he'll do if Coleman decides to take this to Federal Court.
*
He'll sign it. He should have done it long ago - but he will sign it.

how Republicans can expect to be taken seriously when they run crying to the courts (whom they despise at all other times) whenever they don't get exactly what they want. They're a bunch of whiny pussies. That is all.
elected, not to actually be of any use in the seat they aspire to.
A politician telling the truth, there's a novelty!
Actually, the little weasel said "I'll sign it IF there is NOT AN APPEAL or some other directive from a Federal court" in a different interview today. So...uh...*sigh* Yes, we can easily drag this out some more...
Ambition ahead of the health and welfare of working Minnesotans.
Way to come off as a terrible loser Coleman.
We are SICK of this race. We are tired of it. We want it done. He's got bigger fish to fry, sifting through what he needs to cut in the budget. I don't envy him. I don't agree with him a great majority of the time but I wouldn't his job. I'd be sweating right now knowing that as a Republican he has to slice and dice education and health care. That affects a lot of run of the mill voters.
That's my take. Franken will generate some quibbling and petty PR and Franken'll win eventually anyway. Small fish not worth the bother _NOW_ that Timmy has vetoed the Minnesota budget bill, refused to call a special legislative session, and has called up whatever Banana Republic executive clause is in our state constitution that lets him cut and maim any and all budget items at his personal whim and discretion. That's how he tops off his career-long resolve not to raise taxes on the rich with one giant gesture that nukes our state's near future, and that's all he'll need to prove to GOP national that he has the stature to finish the destruction of our country at the federal level that Dubya started. Franken is old news for Timmy.
the moment Pawlenty signs the certification.
It's absolute bullshit that petty legal maneuvers can prevent a state as populous as Minnesota from getting representation.
I'd be furious if I still lived there. Pawlenty hasn't just screwed his state. He's screwed his party AND his chances of ever getting a vote from a moderate anywhere.
I posted most of this in another thread, but I think it bears repeating here. Pawlenty probably will not follow Norm Coleman to the U.S. Supreme Court. After all, he has presidential ambitions.
Look, if Pawlenty really wants to run in 2012, then he is going to need more than just the party faithful. If he continues stalling by letting this go to the U.S. Supreme Court, and they either rule for Frankin or send it back to the state courts, Pawlenty is finished. This is something that can easily come back to haunt him in a presidential campaign. Something like this for a politcal survivor like him is not something he would want going into general elections with.
who has the coolest pail in the sandbox and keeps promising to 'let' someone else play with it when his mother says it's okay. Since he won't share, the fascination wears off quick - plus other kids have convinced their parents to get cooler pails and these show one day and 'the coolest pail kid' is now trying to stay relevant to the sandbox.
But the lesson has been learned. This kid is an asshole full of empty promises.
