Katie Couric: "Anatomy of a Teabagger"
Katie Couric interviewed a few teabaggers to get to the bottom of their beliefs, because generally the media hasn't bothered to check them out like we have.
Katie Couric sits down with a couple of teabaggers to find out what they really believe. And it turns out that they believe in individual liberty, fiscal responsibility, free markets, limited government, low taxes, a strong national defense and protecting our borders against the immigrant invasion. They think the government has usurped the constitution and see themselves as uber-patriots fulfilling the founders' intent. They believe fervently in American exceptionalism and that the nation is under mortal threat from foreign enemies without and traitors within. They are divided on social issues but insist that they are irrelevant to their movement --- they repeat Republican talking points verbatim but insist they are not Republicans. In other words they are standard issue conservative movement wingnuts without the cross.
If you don't want to bother listening to them, you can just listen to Glenn Beck and you'll get the picture. These guys aren't as entertaining but he's obviously their leader.

This is the right wing I grew up with --- before the God Squad was recruited and turned the movement into the panty sniffing morals police. I know them very well. They are racists and conspiracy mongers and they have absolutely no business being anywhere near real power. The Big Money boyz know they have nothing to fear from them --- indeed, they sponsor them. They are good Republicans even if they don't know it.
Either they are lying that they aren't conservatives or just plain ignorant about their beliefs. I believe it's a little of both. Some really just found politics and have been brainwashed to hate the government because they saw what happened under George Bush. President Obama's first year has been for the most part to try and save the country from conservatism and then try to pass health care. We might terribly dislike the approach he's taken towards these problems, but that's it in the nutshell.
The teabaggers are an extension of movement conservatism, and especially its long use of the politics of resentment. That started with Goldwater and morphed into the New Right and then Abramoff and Norquists' College Republicans. They've always found it useful to stor up right-wing populism. Their idea that left-wing libertarians can join with them is absurd in any meaningful way; the Tea Party exists for one reason, to attack the left. I will change my mind if and when the Tea Party movement does one thing that actually hurts conservatism and conservative politicians when it counts. I'm not holding my breath.

In a nutshell, teabaggers are to the Republicans and mirror imaged to what the progressive base is to the Dems. Both groups are deluded into believing their respective parties care one wit about them. Both are angry and frustrated that their party does not represent itself as it should but they hate their dopplegangers on the other side of the street even more.

The Democrats never really were a progressive party.
They occasionally pick up progressive ideas like Keynesian economics, the Civil Rights movement, and the anti-war movement, but it took a hell of a lot of social movement to get them

The party became more self-reflectively liberal but only for the 10 years between 1968-1978, once Carter got into office, they saw the existence of a conservative branch, and it's significant that no Democrat with a knee-jerk progressive record has been elected since actually who knows when?
Teddy Roosevelt was very much a progressive, starting the national parks, and opposing Wall Street, but he really loved his wars, and as president was technically a republican.

Forgot to mention also (though probably pointed out elsewhere) - - they are very coy about it, but teabaggers are united around hatred, especially racial and socio-economic. Led by Glenn Beck, they have become experts at coding language in such a way to gain resonance among primarily white, angry, racist/bigoted, militant extremists. Teabaggers are the friendly face of that movement.
Of course hatred has been a very successful rallying cry uniting people behind all sorts of totalitarian experiments in modern history, along with fear. It's hard to find comparable unifiers among progressives, who might be more tender-footed and hopeful.

The idea is to wedge them. Some TB's have the possibility to be like "Reagan Democrats" but that would require a Democratic Party sincerely interested in freedom, an executive branch not exceeding constitutional authority, an entrenchment of Habeas Corpus and an explicit prohibition of torture.
The problem for you is that the Democrats are not sincerely interested in these issues either.

How will a limited government be able to maintain a strong national defense? How do they think all those tanks, planes, and soldiers are paid for? With happy, magical, freedom thoughts?
A friend brought up a good point.

The tea parties were never for left wing types anyway. The were about protesting taxes and spending. Democrats aren't against those
things. They still want unfettered taxes and spending, just in the ways they see fit
Obama didn't try to save anyone from conservatism. He didn't try to
get health care passed. He became President to do what they have all
done in my lifetime. To grow the federal bureaucracy, the oligarchy,
and increase the scope of U.S. global hegemony while centralizing the
entire thing. It's that simple. There is no difference between this
administration and the last.
After last nights state of the union speech, I wonder if John Amato and his ilk understand who the real enemy is? A group of disgruntled tea partiers or a sitting President that resembles Bush's 3rd term.
If this is the mindset of the left......We are getting what we deserve with the big O'.
