Man who led Sen. John McCain's presidential-campaign office in Pueblo arrested for child molestation

A wide-ranging investigation has been launched into allegations that a well-known Pueblo resident has molested many boys over the years, including most recently when he was the manager for Sen. John McCain's presidential-campaign office in Pueblo.
Under investigation is Jeffrey Claude Bartleson, 52, who was arrested Jan. 29 and then re-arrested Wednesday after a campaign worker in the McCain office told police she believed Bartleson molested one of her sons.

According to the woman, she and a co-worker were planning in October to attend a Sarah Palin rally in Colorado Springs but wanted to travel to the Springs the night before. She told police that she mentioned the planned trip to Bartleson. He offered to keep her 5-year-old son overnight in Pueblo and then drive up to Colorado Springs the next day and meet them there.
She accepted Bartleson's offer. The woman said that her son told her that while at Bartleson's home, Bartleson insisted on giving him a bath, during which he was sexually molested. Later, said the child, Bartleson forced him into Bartleson's bed, where he once again was molested.
In interviews this week with investigators, the child said that when he tried to get away from Bartleson, he kept pulling him back into the bed. He was finally able to leave when Bartleson fell asleep.
And it happened to a family going to a Palin event.

This wasn't the first time the guy's been accused (other kids involved), but has finally been arrested. Pueblo's a dirty town and just too close to Colorado Springs, the center for this sort of bad behavior.

Sure, Pueblo's not the best of towns to grow up in. I left at 18 to attend college in Alamosa. but over the next 40 years i would travel back to pay homage to the folks i still had there. The steel mill provided a job for my father and his family of 7 kids. of course at that time, mothers did not work out of the home, so money was tight. Pueblo was and is an old town, not pretty, not really that close to the mountains and there was no skiing or winter sports for poor mexican kids from the Bessemer area. The only opportunity was to work in either the mill or the ordinance depot. I wanted neither. thus it was out of pueblo and off to college some 3 hours away.
it was a poor town, there were few new mals erected and fewer new home developments. But to characterize this Pueblo as a dirty town, with a characterization of a haven for molestation is wrong. This is something that i've never heard before. I only knew hard working salt of the earth people who lived there.

The thing that keeps tugging at what's left of my brain is that republicans and a large percentage of the Christian churches that support them are authoritarian. So kids are taught to respect authority, and can be scared into silence.

On the bus, on a different occassion, this guy was bullying me, so I didn't punch him, but from a sitting position, picked him up by his coat collar (he was standing and threw him across the bus. A buddy of his said, "He can't do that to me." He started picking on me, and still sitting, I picked him up off the floor by his coat collar and threw him down the length of the bus, where he fell into the back seat. The bus driver started clapping. I guess he got sick of seeing me being picked on.
After another fight, where I was standing, I sought out two guys I had fought with, including the one that fell over in his desk. We shared a class. I knew they were doing badly and showed them my studying tricks (looking for boldface, italics, footnotes, and using the index, and chapter contents. It became a contest when we studied together, to see who could get the answer first.
Finally by that time of 9th grade I was sick of fighting. So once I was taking a leak, and this big guy started with, "I heard you've been saying things about me." Without turning around, I said, "How could I be talking about you when I don't know who you are?" That was the wrong answer, he was one of the school's starring football players, and he was with his buds. So he hauled off and punched me in the jaw. It stunned me, but I let my head fall with his fist, and after a pause to clear my senses just said, "Don't do that." He was the one who looked stunned. I think I also said, "You know, if you punch someone while he's taking a leak, you stand the chance of having you shoes peed on." One of his football buds said, "Come on, let's go, he's tough." I thought they were making fun of me again.
Later in my 20's after losing a job, I went into some group therapy, and although I've always been somewhat pudgy, one guy said in a class discussion where we were supposed to trade compliments, "You know for such a strong looking guy, you seem to let people walk all over you." I accepted the compliment, but thought it a rather left-handed one.
I suppose all this led to a vicarious life, lived through television, and later voracious reading, to help me figure out what was going on around me.
I was beat on and picked on every day, starting in the 9th grade, the horrible stress I felt. My insides were always in pain from all the hate. My name rhymed with Dukakis, that didn't help. These kids were 90% republican, they were looking for the same Democrat blood in the 90's also. I actually had to quit school in the 11th grade I couldn't take it anymore. The school system allowed it, they didn't care, the principle actually found me at fault for being picked on, one day even had me strip down to my underwear to check me for heroin. Thinking about it makes me sick. I did actually stand up to a few, when I thought I had a chance, but when I did, I was punished severely so I learned just to run away. They owe me, I was smarter, faster, stronger, more honest, and kind hearted. They wrecked my life and continued to do so though the local police and courts, this still continues. I can't hardly go anywhere anymore.
I could go on, but I feel ya man. I understand the mental and physical abuse.
I just simply try not to think about it. I remember finding a bunch of my old driver's licenses, and when I showed them to a co-worker he asked, "What do you do, totally change your appearance every few years?"
I've never had much of a social life, I guess because I don't quite trust anyone of either gender. Often they don't know what I'm talking about, which puts a crimp into everything.
