And how is the conservative right going to make sure race is all you can think of when you think of the name Obama?
How about by making the case that blacks in general are lazy, angry, and engaged in a 3 decades old plot to train black children as militants against the US? It's those scary black terrorists again. Don't think anyone would actually SAY that? Think again. Listen to it in Rush Limbaugh's own words. It's hard to cut out much of his racist diatribe so the full transcript will appear under the fold.

We thought that it was just liberal welfare policies and all that that kept blacks from progressing while other minorities grew and prospered, but no, it is these wackos from Bill Ayers to Jeremiah Wright to other anti-American Afrocentric black liberation theologists with ACORN, and Barack Obama is smack dab in the middle of it, they have been training young black kids to hate, hate, hate this country, and they trained their parents before that to hate, hate, hate this country. It was a movement. It was a Bill Ayers, anti-capitalist, anti-American educational movement. ACORN is how it was implemented, right under our noses.
It has been a movement, it has been a religion, and Obama and Jeremiah Wright and William Ayers were all up to their big ears in it.

From the time of my birth, 57 years ago, to today, this country has grown and expanded, prosperity has opened its doors for more and more people around the world, not just people born in this country. We know the stories of Asians emigrating and running rings around people born in this country academically in California. We know all about the immigration, legal and illegal, to get into the country. We know that the standard of living has risen. We know that technological advancement is going along at light speed. And yet during this period of time, whether it be the last 57 years or be it the last 20 years, it seems that a majority of the black population has remained angry, frustrated, and behind. They've been left behind. They are acting like they've been left behind, and of course we've heard that this is because of racism, natural systemic institutional racism in America, that we are unfair, that this country is just horrible and rotten.
You ever ask yourself how it is that people not even born here can come here and in a few short years begin prospering in school, their own business or what have you, yet people who are born in this country somehow have been raised to hate it, to think they're still back in the days of slavery. I actually think, after studying all this ACORN stuff and reading what Stanley Kurtz has written about this, I actually believe that what has taken place here in addition to liberal Democrat legislation, such as the Great Society and the war on poverty, which a lot of people will now acknowledge really busted up the black family by the government taking the place of the husband and father, free to roam around and bear no responsibility. The mother remained the mother, she got the financial assistance from this legislation, from the federal government. The federal government became the father. The father didn't have to hang around in order for the kids to be okay, depending on how you define okay. Rush is one of a few who is taking on the type of mentality that has held back the advancement of race in this country more than anything. The mentality of victimization and the tendency of liberals ( like the Jackson's and the Sharpton's) to pander to this and them looking to have the government subsidize poverty among a race is the major roadblock to advancement, not some coordinated effort to keep the black man down. It's a shame that when black men like Cosby and Thomas point out the truth they get called Uncle Tom's and white people who point out the truth get called racists. The mentality that is holding back race in this country is racism. Your revisionist approach does not change the fact that it was acceptable to actively discriminate against black people until very recently. In fact, racism still exists. A week ago, a black goalkeeper in an MLS soccer game was called a monkey and told to go back to the jungle. Black people should not be told how to deal with racism by people who refuse to acknowledge that it exists. Racism does not have to be a coordinated effort. It can be widespread and individual and have the same effect.
Of course, that is not enough for people like you. You have to find a way to blame it on the "liberals." Liberals pass legislation that allows minorities to vote (after conservatives pass laws forbidding them to vote). Liberals pass laws to help people who are poor (not black people, poor people). This is not pandering. this is social justice. Of course, conservatives don't believe that a society should help the least fortunate, so, if you need a practical reason to help the poor, then just consider that poor people are less likely to turn to crime if they have money to buy food and shelter (the real reason crime rates are consistently falling over the last 40 years).
What Rush is talking about is b.s. Saying that welfare creates absent fathers is not true. Absent fathers existed prior to welfare. It is not a phenomenon created by welfare. There are no facts or figures to back up his idiotic argument.
I was disappointed but not surprised by what I heard come out of Rush's mouth. And to John and others that think like him, let me clear something up. I am a black man. I am well educated and respected. And I am not angry. Hard to believe? Maybe you should stop and ask yourself why black people appear angry to you. Consider another person's perspective for once. Would being followed in a store offend you? How about being stared at or talked about as if you were some wild animal about to lose control at any minute? Or maybe having to constantly prove or defend yourself against every negative stereotype and statistic about people of your race? Those things still happen. Some of us face them on a daily basis. And yes, that can make a person angry.
The eyes are the windows to the soul. So when you look at us, consider yourself and what it is about you that makes us so angry. What do your eyes tell others? That you're judging them? That you hate them? Maybe all you want to see is hatred, so that is what you focus on and invoke in others. If you can learn to look at others with different eyes, I guarantee your outlook will change.
And in regards to Asians and people of other nationality coming to this country and outperforming native born Americans, so what? America is not the land of the white. America is a land of all people, be they black, white, brown or any other color. We all make up this great land of ours. I happen to know that some people come to this country from much much worse conditions, so it is as if they have no place to go but up. America is the land of opportunity. Yet being born here tends to lull us into a sort of slumber, leaving us ignorant to the numerous options we have available to us. To someone coming from a war-torn land or unbelievable poverty, the most meager of American accommodations or conditions can be a step up. Should we hold those people back from achieving a better life? Limit their success to a level we feel comfortable with? Are we really that petty and jealous?
So to sum it up, boys and girls, black people don't hate America. We just hate you (to people like Rush and John). And if we're so mad about people from other countries doing better than us on our turf, I suppose we need to do better for ourselves. Remember the concept of America was created by people that came here wanting to do better for themselves and escape unfair conditions. So now we want to get upset at other people for doing the exact same thing? It's time we learn to share and play well with others. It's time we grow up.

I have a Republican friend who doesn't believe himself to be a racist, but I know he is, and I tell him that very often. He often makes this very same argument that Limbaugh makes,--obviously having picked it up from him--and I'm honestly not sure how to debate this with him. I know that the history of race relations in the U.S. has led to a definite imbalance in the distribution of wealth and power among the various ethnicities in the country, but I don't know how to tell him this in a way that truly refutes Limbaugh's racist bullshit. Can anyone point me to someplace that would provide me with the info I'm looking for? (I'm sure he'd just dismiss it as some sort of liberal fantasy, but it would make me feel better to have a more informed opinion.)

The sad thing is that both Limbaugh and Palin display a lack of empathy or introspection on the filth they are spewing. Instead, they are just displaying the ugliness of racism. It is even more chilling that they don't give a crap that they are inciting people to be violent with their disgusting talk.

I've experience what you spoke of all my life, Ceci...especially at work places. I workout EVERYDAY, mainly to deal will the stress that the horrors of the racially corrupt American legal system creates for me. Rush's comments are a surprise to those who choose to stick their collective heads in the sand since it doesn't affect them. I've had race relation authority's at this site like Ysbaddaden, Tyree, and that MIA troll Dennis try to tell me that what I felt was racism wasn't...because they said so! I also say, as a black lady, I've experienced racism all my life too. I've dealt with it throughout my education. I've dealt with it in the work place.
I've even dealt with it on-line from people who:
1) "don't want to talk about race because it's just race-bait";
2) presume to "know what Black folks are thinking";
3) claim that "racism is dead" because they haven't seen it around;
4) to ignore any talk about race because it disturbs their sensitivities.
(And those type of folks on-line are just a small percentage compared to the other folks out there of this type).
It didn't take this election to realize that this crap doesn't change.
But what I saw at those McCain/Palin rallies scared and hurt me. It made me think of my own relatives, some of which who survived Jim Crow and the Segregated South and lived to tell about it.
It frightens and angers me that there are people out there throwing out these racist memes without dealing with the implications. They are pretending that it is simply a game. In fact, it is unnerving that they don't give a damn about it.
To them, they're just "venting their anger". :(
So yes, Rush is a part of that. His legacy is stoking the fires of hate so much so that it has brought out a very dangerous and violent trend not only in this country, but in this election. I hope that people realize that point considerably over the days.

I live abroad and British people can be pretty shocked about American racism, but they can't be too smug about it themselves. Their racism is a little different than what goes on in the States. But Ceci, you are so right. I can point out blatant racism and I am overreacting, despite me being black. Yes, I know the feeling. I have not spoken to my eldest brother since 2004, when he informed me that Kerry had shot himself in order to get his purple heart or whatever. Rush's critique of 1960s-style left wing social welfare policies isn't entirely off base. Many serious liberals now admit that welfare perpetuated inner city poverty because it effectively paid people to have more children. Barack Obama admits all of this, and to claim that he is some sort of 1960s-style radical is absurd.
Also, some of the multicultural educational initiatives can be counter-productive insofar as they use multiculturalism as a code word for lower, or non-existent standards. However, I haven't seen any evidence that Obama actually supports this sort of stuff other than vague attacks emanating from the NYPost.
The real shame is that while conservatives did play a role in pointing out some of the errors of left-wing policies designed to help the poor (siding unequivocally with teacher's unions, which many democrats, such as Adrian Fenty and I think Barack Obama have realized the error of), people like Rush couldn't give two s**ts about poor people.
