Why does the Washington Post hate liberals so much?

I'm sure you saw this piece in the Washington Post by Gerard Alexander titled, "Why are liberals so condescending?"

Jamison Foser busts the WaPo:

Well, this is interesting. Remember that "Why are liberals so condescending" piece by Gerard Alexander the Washington Post published last week? Turns out, the author didn't submit the piece the the Post -- the Post sought him out:

Bethesda, Md.: I thought that "Why are Liberals So Condescending" was the most intelligent article I've read in the Post in some time.

Do you think that this is the result of a decision by your editors to be more fair and balanced?

Also, I would appreciate your comments on the "All serious scientists agree that Global Warming is an enormous problem." school of thought. This matter has been positioned in exactly the same condescending manner.

Gerard Alexander: I can only tell you that the Post editor I dealt with searched me out, and were as encouraging as any editor could conceivably be.

I wonder when we'll find out that a Washington Post staffer is actively seeking out a similarly disparaging column about conservatives? After all, Howard Kurtz keeps telling us how liberal the Post's opinion operation is.

Meanwhile, Alexander spent the bulk of today's Washington Post online Q&A acknowledging that some conservatives are plenty condescending to liberals, but claiming that it just isn't very common. Or something. Alexander, for example, contends that "conservative magazines, elected officials, etc" don't accuse coastal liberals of being out of touch with heartland values -- and that if they did so, they'd be "run out of town."

What planet has Alexander been living on for the past thirty years? Conservatives are always so courteous. Why does the Post think we're so mean and nasty? I certainly don't remember conservatives calling us traitors, terrorist sympathizers, we hate our freedom, the troops and American values, do you?

Please email the Washington Post and tell them I sent you. Maybe they can answer your inquiry even if you are a condescending a-hole.

That article by the precious Gerard Alexander is fragrant with condescension.

But as time went on, it infuriated me, so I unsubscribed. I hate to see newspapers fail, but if newspapers fail to do the job they are supposed to do -- inflict the comfortable and comfort the afficted -- then they deserve to fail. I never thought I would say that about the Post, but it has fallen far from its proud Watergate coverage. But then, that was long, long ago, in a galaxy of reality. We live in an alternate reality now.

There are douchey liberals in the world. There are douchey conservatives in the world. Let it go.

You're being condescending!

I'm sorry, but I call bullshit.

Show me the liberal who comes close to O'Reilly or Coulter, and calls for the bombing of a 'conservative' enclave, such as O'Reilly and Coulter have called on for years, with NYC (before and after 9/11), SF, etc.

and please, don't pretend this conversation is about inane comment section posts, I want real, actual spokespeople. Leaders of said liberals who come close to the douchebaggery of Limbaugh, Hannity, Kristol, Lowery, etc. ad nauseum.

I won't be holding my breath.

Well you're probably a hardcore liberal yourself, so we wouldn't see eye to eye on this. And I don't mean that in a negative way at all.

Cindy Sheehan is pretty ****y.

false comparison.

since when has Cindy had a national platform?
oh yeah, never.
when did she call for the bombing of a conservative building or city?
oh yeah, never.

I am personally very fiscally conservative and socially liberal.
but not that bullshit version of fake fiscal conservation the supposed conservatives practice, where they spend more than they take in and still pretend to be 'conservative'.
where they roll around in pork and no-bid contracts, which is okay when they are in power, but not when their 'opponents' are.

still not holding my breath.

The piece had the undeniable whine associated with a tenure
track professor stalled in mid passage to full professorship
with little of the documentation normally associated with good scholarship.

As the departed Dr. Durden would have duly noted, they guy probably makes an ass of himself at parties and deserves every bit of condescension with which he is deservedly greeted.

Plus he is paradigmatically full of it.

And probably has teeny little body parts where size matters most.

Cindy Sheehan lost her son to a war that was based on fabricated evidence, and Bush called it a 'Noble Cause'. She simply asked him to explain that term. Has O'Reily lost anyone in Iraq?

He lives on planet IOKIYAR

Shadowgm's picture

Just an asteroid belt. You see, the sun went nova, but they all stayed right where they were, convinced that their God would never make something so fucked up as a sun that would expand and destroy their planet.

But when it happened, the entire populace of IOKIYAR stuck their heads up their asses and were saved from the scourge of radiation. Now, they continue to live on a pile of irradiated rocks floating in the dark and insist that they are still a great nation and a power to be reckoned with in the galaxy.

To get a good look at the rise of the media in the modern world read "The Powers That Be" by David Halberstam. It is a bit dated, it was written in the mid '70s, but it is well written. I believe that he would be apppalled to see what is going on now. I know that I am.

meanwhile they attack the weak and powerless in our society, and hurt them. I'll never forget or forgive how they behaved when they wanted to stop SCHIP from getting funding.

I'll drop WaPo a note when I get a chance.

And personally, if I get a little condescending at times, well, it's hard to deal with dim-witted bullies so often!

I've never seen change without a fire

Thing is, Annaleigh, this isn't about you or I.

That's a dodge, and besides, any honest observer only has to look at the difference between this comment section and that of redstate, or FDL's comment section compared to freeperville.

However, as stated, it's not about anonymous internet posters.

have nothing on conservatives in the mean and hateful department.

When you have to REPEATEDLY point out to an idiot why they are an idiot, well, you just can't help being cast as condescending. I get that way, too, at times. Especially when I'm talking to a chronological adult as if to a 3-year old... and they STILL don't get it! Sheesh.

So this was earlier today....

WaPo Drone: "Sir, can you tell me why you'd like to cancel your subscription?"

Me: "Because I saw a 128 point headline in your Sunday Outlook implying that I'm condescending. Well, this is what condescending people do. They cancel their newspaper subscriptions. Call me back when you run a 128 point headline in your outlook section asking why conservatives are so backwards."

Gerard Alexander:

Prominent studies and journalistic accounts of right-wing politics at the time stressed paranoia, intolerance and insecurity, rendering conservative thought more a psychiatric disorder than a rival.

yet studies show exactly that.

A study funded by the US government has concluded that conservatism can be explained psychologically as a set of neuroses rooted in "fear and aggression, dogmatism and the intolerance of ambiguity".

and that

"This intolerance of ambiguity can lead people to cling to the familiar, to arrive at premature conclusions, and to impose simplistic cliches and stereotypes," the authors argue in the Psychological Bulletin.

Is that objective enough to neutralize the lame argument of condescension! oh no wait they don't believe in science... never mind

Another study shows that overconfidence & incompetence go hand-in-hand.

jakes's picture

There was a time not that long ago when every major city in the US had at least 2 newspapers. One business and one labor. Then with the age of mergers and acquisitions under Saint Ronnie the Ray-gun all of the labor papers disappeared. The schools were sanctioned for teaching the liberal U.S. history and liberal civics. Unions were blamed for jobs being shipped overseas to take advantage of slave labor. Every town had unique restaurants, hardware stores, and grocery stores. Now every town has the same restaurant chains, hardware chains, and grocery chains. Americas wealth shot up to the top 5 percent and they cried poverty because their taxes were only cut in half. The average voter wants desperately to be lied to because the truth would be painful. The American experiment will die with parades and standing ovations.

Rich H's picture

would someone please list the liberal papers available in the U.S. The dozen or so, the eight or less, the six or fewer, the...

never mind.

Something seriously lacking in our "respected" press.

Personally, I miss the Weekly World News on the magazine stand.

But it lives online!

It only seems that way Gerard, dear. Neocon teabagging thugs don't understand what's being said unless it's said slowly, simply and as monosyllabically as is possible. Even then It's pretty much a lost cause.

Now go outside and play. Let the adults handle the important business, like stopping the wars, reducing the deficit and fixing the economy, allowing everyone civil rights and getting access to healthcare for everyone, w/o involving payments to private insurers.

is the latest Repug/Fox/Conservative Talking Point.

We're gonna hear it, and variations on the theme, a lot in the coming months. The corporate Rulers F***kers of the Universe, are probably uneasy, worried that some of the less-dumb conservative populace will start wondering if "Liberals know what they're talking about?".

Oh, yeah. Liberals are superior. We're generally not greedy, selfish, dishonest, and anti-intellectual. Conservatives? They define those traits.

It's because Republicans are retarded and they don't want political correctness from the Democrats - they say it all the time.
Republicans don't want political correctness so screw them, they are retards. They can get over it. They can then set their sights a bit lower.

"Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob"

I think for someone to think your being condescending they have to have the luxury of believing you are not going to kick that someone's ass - so shove a (good for working class peoples) health care bill down their throats!

Better to be wrong and strong (better to be strong and right!) than to have them accuse you of condescension!

bye bye bi-partisanship - the ultimate condescension.

Is the O of the "circular file" these addressed mails go into. There's no quality control anymore in publishing, and they wonder why their circulation is dropping.

and when they were finished I asked who wrote it. They didn't know who the author was so I said it was probably an Assistant Professor of Political Science from George Mason. Not a bad guess, huh? (apologies to GM) Actually, given the juvenile and self-serving tone, it was not all that hard to spot someone posturing in a quest for recognition. He obviously had a chip on his shoulder right from the get go.

If you haven't read his Q&A following the piece, do it for even greater insights into the depth of knowledge he contributes to the conversation.

The Ailes/Rove propaganda machine will go full tilt now with the Orwellian screams that Intelligence is Condescension. They has already succeeded in dumbing down a good part of the country - now they want to pump up their egos through reviling those who think, do real research, and can present logical arguments.

'Cause we're $&@#ing retarded, right?

Imagine a group of teens stealing CD's. We're the one in the group who stands up and says it's wrong. People with no conscience don't like being called out. Ever.

Let them say what they want. This has been going on since they first used a donkey icon to caricature liberals. Back then it was considered a badge of honor to be called a "jackass" for holding populist views.

So it's been almost 200 years. Nothing's changed; the other side are still pricks.

freequark's picture

The primary function of liberals in American society is to entice progressive voters to support corporate, anti-progressive Democrats. It's no surprise then when the Post and other liberal media outlets seek out stories that disparage *liberals,* as they have to focus the attention of progressives away from the increasingly corporate Democrats, and onto *conservatives.*

Bokonon's picture

They have perfected the "divide and conquer" strategy while preserving the illusion of democracy.

as a long time poster on the Slate board known as ballot box, they also promote -- by failure to do their moderator/editorial duties -- an atmosphere that is far from palatable to liberals, people of color, muslims, and gays.

For example --- http://fray.slate.com/discuss/search/SearchRe... Why they'd even keep those things in their records is a mystery to me.

In fairness they have banned some, but still allow others to ply their trade minus the use of the "N" word, like here from one of the more prolific

It has been evident that the Washington Post has turned into a thinly veiled Cluster-Fox subsidiary.. Since the take over of the paper by Ms. Weymouth, this paper has bit the proverbial dust. It's hard now days to find an article that doesn't seem to have Ailes approvals all over it.. It's actually become pretty pathetic...

It's hard to imagine folks like Eugene Robinson staying at the paper much longer with this kind of garbage being published....

I want that piece of crap to shrivel up and die. The so-called liberal Post and NY Times are off my list as news sources. I don't even like it when Huff Post, Crooks and Liars, This Progress, TPM, etc. link to them. We need to let them die. The reporters they have that are worth anything at all will find slots on places like Huff Post, etc. which will be able to hire more staff when they get the advertising revenue currently going to those so-call liberal rags. I read the Post and the Times daily for years. I'm all better now.
