Go Home

There was a time in this country where the poor went to poorhouses, where they were treated like chattel and had no real opportunity to pull themselves out of poverty. Progress changed all that. Programs like unemployment insurance, welfare, food stamps, and Social Security gave Americans an opportunity to survive with at least a foothold to a better life.

This is what Republicans hate. They want the poor to stay poor, to be enslaved to Republican corporate masters, to be grateful for whatever scraps are tossed their way. With that in mind, consider teabagger racist candidate Carl Paladino's latest proposal:

Paladino laid out several plans that included converting underused state prisons into centers that would house welfare recipients. There, they would do work for the state — "military service, in some cases park service, in other cases public works service," he said — while prison guards would be retrained to work as counselors.

"Instead of handing out the welfare checks, we'll teach people how to earn their check. We'll teach them personal hygiene ... the personal things they don't get when they come from dysfunctional homes," Paladino said.

Of course, this is the same guy that thinks bestiality and racist photoshop jobs are fun to email other people, and has no problem using eminent domain to stop the mosque.

I thought teabaggers believed in less government, not more. But Paladino wants to conscript the poor to work for the state and live in prisons in their off time, use state power to confiscate land and the right to build on that land because he doesn't like the religion of the owners of said land, and has no problem with sharing his somewhat twisted fantasies via email.

Fortunately, Andrew Cuomo has a comfortable lead over both GOP candidates, but if Paladino keeps spouting off this stuff, Cuomo might win by the biggest landslide in New York history.

WPA?

There are a few differences, too. The WPA didn't conscript workers, and not every job provided involved a camp- for example, the Federal Art Project.

Isn't that what existed in the 1930s? You see them in the movies, people wandering the countryside looking for work, then stopping in at some rough cabins set up in camps?

I guess, with EVERYONE bailing out of the stock market as they seem to be doing, this would be the solution in this guy's mind...

Those shanty towns were called Hoovervilles, in 'honor' of Herbert Clark Hoover, the George W. Bush of the 20th century.
Today, the homeless are everywhere. It seems that you can't go two blocks without seeing someone on a corner holding a sign asking for help. Millions of Americans, through no fault of their own, don't have a place to sleep at night, don't have enough to eat, and don't have access to medical care. Too many of them are children.
The Republicans say the solution is more tax cuts for the rich. Well, we've had Reagan's tax cuts for 30 years. We've had Dubya's tax cuts for almost 10. What do we have to show for it? Go downtown in any city in the US and look at the street corners. THAT's what tax cuts for the one-percenters gives you...

I couldn't agree more with you, friend. My parents both survived the Great Depression, and have told me of the poverty they went through, and I know that both of them came to the Midwest to look for work a number of years later.

Apparently, the new mantra of the right is "the poor have got to go".

What's next from the right, rounding up all of the poor against their will and putting them into camps? Sounds rather sinister to me.

Any Star Trek DS9 fans there? Ghettos for the poor in the 21st century was predicted in Star trek- it was the episode where Sisko traveled back in time and posed as Gabrille Bell, who lead an uprising in American ghettos for the poor.

This is just more class warfare, the Republican hatred of the poor and working class.

Perhaps now the uneducated right wing trailer park bubbas will see that voting Republican goes against their best interests

When I saw that episode the first time it aired, the first thing came to my mind was that the right wing must be running things in that 21st century America portrayed on that episode.

And some don't like it when ( rightfully ) I say that the Reich Right wing / the Republican party remind me more and more of Hitler's Nazi party in Germany and have adopted their tactics as far as propaganda , agitating the sheeples , creating chaos , smear campaigns , fear tactics , using the Church / Christians , racism and they know the power of the lie , repeat it over and over and the lie becomes the truth , the ignorant and unwise sheeples will believe . Evil , totally with out conscience , we can't let ourselves get worn down by them , turn on each other , give up and let them take over , we must keep fighting them even when it seems useless and hopeless . wouldn't it make sense for the DNC to support Tea Party candidates in tough to win places? of course they'd have to do it through some kind of PAC so as to obfuscate the source, but they way these unelectable crazies split the GOP vote, or are just impossibly unelectable. it's a the greatest gift the Democrats could ever hope for.

case in point:
Sharron Angle is Reid's biggest campaign asset. Let's face it, if he were running against a non-tea candidate he'd be annihilated in a general election.

and another in florida - Crist's defection seems to be becoming a Liebermann moment for the Repubs ... Either way. it hurt their party. Crist took a lot of votes with him when he left the fold.

I say the DNC step up and start supporting the TP'ers =) With the generally weak Dems they support, this could only be in their advantage... that's probably why they'd never do it - it's a sure win of a strategy =)

in his sad little pea-sized brain the country's poor are seen as lazy, stupid, and mostly of color. in his warped view of what's right, he has no trouble packing them off to a "camp", as long as they don't wander down any street in his gated community.
he's a piss-ant of a human being, not fit to hold office.

It never ceases to amaze how how well (or rather, how horribly) Republicans manage to take ideas that fundamentally are not entirely bad, like getting welfare recipients to do productive work that the state currently isn't getting done, and turn it into something deeply twisted (conscripting them into slave labor camps).

Yes, I know I shouldn't be surprised; and it's not surprise so much as bafflement.

Hygiene training? REALLY?

For everyone out there who keeps saying that Fascism can't happen here, I give you Paladino. The Republican party IS the Fascist party.

They are anti-democratic, anti-American and truly evil sociopaths, so this is what America has become after all the civil rights struggles.

Another gift for the Dems, only in NY, we know how to take advantage of such gifts, unlike most of those in DC so far.

After reading this post, as of now I am officially working toward the goal of leaving this country. I hope I get out before it sinks very much lower. Where will I go? Some third world country? I live in one now. Third rate and sinking. People reveling in their stupidity and self worth.

Obama: Sell off Public Housing

PETRA: the Death of Public Housing

PETRA - Preservation, Enhancement and Transformation of Rental Assistance

The Obama administration has been promoting far-reaching legislation (PETRA) to change the way our nations 2,400 public housing authorities (Phase) operate in an effort to privatize our nations public housing, setting off a feud between 2.3 million public housing residents who are in opposition to the privatization of their housing, and the advocates and proponents of public housing privatization from the so-called affordable housing industry, who stand to make billions if they can get their hands on our nations 1.2 million public housing units.

The problem -- Congress has underfunded public housing through the years creating a huge backlog of repairs and maintenance, and all Congress needs to do is provide more funding to remedy the situation.

Instead of asking for more funding from Congress, HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan and the Obama administration want to privatize the 1.2 million public housing units in a complicated scheme to transfer ownership of our public housing units to so-called affordable housing developers that will charge above market rate rents being subsidized by the Section 8 program, believing that the new owners would then be able to tap into the equity of the properties to get loans from the private sector for the backlog of maintenance and repairs, as other property owners do in the market of privatized housing.

The privatization scheme threatens to displace hundreds of thousands of low-income families, elderly and the disabled from their public housing units if enacted into law, and future funding shortfalls in the Section 8 program would place the housing units at risk of bank foreclosure. ...

Much more at link.

Already being implemented in Washington DC:
RT Video: Public housing advocates oppose private sector takeover

RTAmerica | August 18, 2010

While military spending gets top dollar, a government subsidized program that has been around since the great depression is in danger of disappearing. Public housing, more commonly known in the US as section 8 could possibly move from the federal government's jurisdiction to private companies. The Obama administration has introduced a proposal that is not being welcomed by advocates and community organizers of public and affordable housing. The measure would move the public housing system into the private sector.

Obama was a neighborhood organizer??? what kind of human being can possibly turn his back on so many in favor of a few Wall Street corporatists. Are you sure, he is trying to privatize public housing??? There has been an effort in Annapolis, MD to privatize our 1100 units of public housing established in the 60's moving forward. Rumor had it, that private developers coveted the very valuable land on a roadway that expands between the City and the County. If the public housing is gone, the would be privatizers would make a fortune. There has been a real effort to demonize the poor in our community, to justify the privatization. And now the fed under Obama is trying to advance "privatization" of public housing??

Why isn't the suggestion that governments HIRE people to do "military service, in some cases park service, in other cases public works service." Those are excellent jobs that most municipalities and states need done.

But then, those are government jobs so they aren't real jobs, right?

And the hygiene comment - what a total a-hole. They are poor and stuck in a bad situation, not children. Yes, I'm sure there are people on welfare with bad hygiene. Just as I know there are people with good jobs who don't use deodorant and don't wash their hands after using the bathroom. Yeesh.

stop it all, the corporate handouts, the food stamps, the flood insurance, but guarantee a government job, institute a draft.

did you notice the one dem to suggest it is in big trouble?

even the "literate" kids i know aren't really, they can read and write but they don't have a clue; personally i can think of at least one person of whatever color you want to mention that is functionally illiterate, home school, public school, very little school, dropouts. and everybody is a motherfucker, sumbitch, nigga this, nigga that, not making it up, i saw "fucking fagets" spray painted somewhere.

it was the great emancipator who started it after all, maybe we should have a draft, it does say "military or alternative" service, though at present females are exempt, it is still the law.

there is the cuban model of farming with oxen

which adds topsoil to the mix, uses less fossil fuel, and is certainly more biodegradable, who knows? could be beets, could be carrots, just cause it's free don't mean it's bad.
if the big fat corporate farmers can't survive without the handouts, then maybe we should put people back on the land, certainly more equitable seeing as how ag is all we got left.

long and short of it is, i see people every day who look like they could use some sort of government service, sad but true. especially disadvantaged of all sorts, could maybe use some school in the morning, work til dark, way it used to be done; at least they would learn to read and write, maybe a few manners?

overall, a bit too reddish? police statey?

having some experience of the inside of prisons, familiar with their construction, most of them could just as well serve as mini-fortresses;
or we could legalize the weed and the hemp, start growing all sorts of good shit, press it for oil, make clothes, and plastic!! and all on marginal land, or flood plains!! huge, huge cash crop, all with people power, talk about a sought after specialty, hell, we wouldn't need a draft!
but then we have all these empty prisons.
i know, we can use the prisons as educational centers for wayward executives!

no?

then fortresses, for defense against irradiated monster mutant magnets? must be good for something, we put all that money into em.
