Republicans to 9/11 Responders: Die, and Die Quickly
(h/t Heather)
This clip of Anthony Weiner going ballistic on the House floor is one for the ages -- it should be watched again and again and again, and not only because he was angry and frustrated, but because he spoke a truth that all of us expect from our representatives. It's really quite simple: "If you believe that it's right, you vote yes. You don't hide behind procedure and give cover to your pals."
It's really that simple, but here's the backstory. The House has been trying to re-open the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund through 2031 for 9/11 responders whose health has been affected.
When it became apparent that the Republicans were going to attach "poison pill" amendments to the bill that had nothing to do with 9/11 and everything to do with their political agenda, Democrats shut down the possibility of amending the bill by moving it to the suspension calendar, where a minimum 2/3rds vote is needed for it to pass.
Republicans applied the same old talking points, calling it a "massive new entitlement program". Actually, that's not quite right. They called it a "massive job-killing new entitlement program", because that's the Frank Luntz mantra of the week. (I was monitoring the Senate at the same time, and somehow the Small Business Jobs bill also became another "massive job-killing new entitlement program.") Of course, that's nonsense too, given that it had been structured to be paid for by closing a tax loophole for foreign corporations.
If you believe it's right, you vote yes.
Republicans, for all their breast-pounding and glory-singing about patriotism, wouldn't know a patriot if it came up and bashed them between the eyes. Instead of standing for those people who gave no thought to their own safety but rushed forward to search for and rescue possible survivors of the attack, they defeated the measure.
Because it took a 2/3rds vote to pass without any amendments attached, most of the Republican caucus stood firm, and it went down 255-159, short of the 276 votes needed to pass.
There's only one reasonable conclusion to draw: Republicans don't believe it's right to care for 9/11 responders. They think it would be better for those responders to have to go to court, evidently because they might die before receiving a settlement to help them with their health problems.
The ten minutes leading into Rep. Weiner's rant give a sense of how cynical these people truly are. As the time for the vote neared and it was clear the bill might not pass, Speaker Nancy Pelosi came to the floor to exhort everyone to do the right thing:
The American people are looking to us to do the right thing for the men and women who answered the call of duty and continue to suffer from ill health effects on their service.
It is my understanding that the people affected by this live in 433 of the 435 congressional districts, because people not only rushed in from New York and surrounding areas, they came and brought their expertise and their help from all over the country.
And therefore, the consequences of their bravery are felt all over the country and the impact on their health is an important part of the challenge that they face and that we owe them for.
This legislation fulfills our obligation to those Americans.
And then Rep. Peter King (R-NY) stood and proved how craven Republicans really are:
What we are doing tonight is a cruel hoax and a charade. Everyone knows this bill won't get the 2/3 majority required on the suspension calendar and everyone also knows that this bill would pass with a clear majority if the Democrat leadership would allow it to come to the floor under the regular procedures of the House.
The reason HR 847 is not being brought up under regular order is the majority party is petrified of having its members face a potential vote on illegal immigration.
You can blame the Republicans, and I've been strongly critical of the Republican position on this issue but the reality is, you could pass this bill if you wanted to. You are in control, you have the power and you have the responsibility.
So to review, the Democrats bring a bill to the floor to pay the debt this country has to 9/11 responders. It doesn't have any poison pills, but the Republicans want to add something that involves illegal immigration, so that Democrats will look like they voted against illegal immigration when they were voting on a bill to take care of 9/11 responders.
And according to Peter King, it's all the Democrats' fault. Got it. (Note: Peter King voted for the bill...)
If you're not as angry as Anthony Weiner at this point, I can serve up some Senate shenanigans as a side dish. Between the two of them, Republicans proved themselves as evil as they truly are.
Here are the names of the Representatives (Republican AND Democrat) who turned their backs on all 9/11 responders, but especially those responders in their state. They should be posted on milk cartons nationwide with the words: MISSING: Morals, ethics, and human compassion next to their name and picture.

its missing in politics and slowly it is coming back by the likes of Grayson and Weiner... Thank you!
I was just talking to a co-worker earlier this morning saying that republicans jump in to quick and the democrats sit back and wait too long, we need more dems like Weiner!!
Yeah. Everybody loves Weiner.
No, wait ...
(What a terrible name to have in politics -- I'm sure it invites that sort of crap all the time.)
and I insist that the correct pronunciation is BONER.
but since the baby factory is closed, I'll settle for adopting him.
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”

Except when it wasn't?
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
As I recall, that was yesterday.
Yesterday, today and forever, for that matter.
Sure I remember.
...until it's time. This was the right time and the right place.
I just wish he would have said, "Sit your fat, Republican ass down!" rather than just "Sit down!"
You LOSE. Good DAY sir!
I wish this guy was my rep. in the House. God bless the fiery passion of people like him. Gives me hope that all is not lost.
...that I am so turned on by this guy? HELL YA! I thought I was watching the end of "And Justice for All". I'm gonna send this to everyone I know.
He's hot.
Instead of Sunday political talk, I watch Malloy.
Good shit for the soul.

Peter King is, just go check out the screaming match they got into on the Faux Noise channel....there's a posting on Democratic Underground. Meh....King looks like your worst nightmare...what a fug-ugly human(?) being!

which stopped the legitimate vote count long enough for Bush to petition the US Supreme Court to install him as president. All that "Brooks Brother's Revolution" was for was to drag out the process long enough to push the clock to panic mode.
King did that. He's a vile POS.
which is just another reason that Obomba is a loser in my estimation.
"Pull my finger..."

We gotta start getting in these liver hearted bastards faces. The Reid, Obama get along method is bullshit.
There just aren't enough of them right now.
Time to kick some fucking GOP ass instead of being lame cowards who crumble when confronted. Bullshit on the cooperation shit. No more!

and some very tough questions should have been asked, but from the video posted, I can't recall any.
This should get some media attention. The MSM doesn't really care about substance but they are all about image. With any luck the national news shows will dedicated at least ten seconds to this.
Countdown & Rachel Maddow tonight....and maybe The Ed Show.
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
It need to be on CBS/NBC/ABC. Nobody sees MSNBC.
the MSM doesn't show anything that puts the Rethuglicans in a bad light.....
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
I'll take that challenge and dream. But I won't hold my breath.
This is what has been missing on the left for too long. Screw comity. Sit down and shut up, hypocrites.
First off, I'm not advocating violence, lest anyone think that's my point, 'K?
But if Democrats show they have some balls and act (and vote) like they care about this country and the people they represent, I'd come back and vote for them--even if I don't agree with them 100% of the time.
This "go along to get along" BS has to end. Grayson had the right idea. "I hit back...and you should see my reach." Enough being pushed around by liars and hypocrites who have to splice tape together to make themselves look better. There isn't enough tape in the world.
He took an oath - in writing - not to vote for a HCR bill without a public option, and then voted for such a bill anyway.
It's obvious phony progressives like Grayson and Kucinich are there only to work up the emotions of real progressives and keep them voting for Democrats. When push comes to shove, these people vote right along with the establishment.
If ACA had failed, progressives would be clinging to the cliff while Republicans kicked at their hands. You don't go from A to Z without landing on middle squares first.
Even FDR knew this. He was so famously progressive he pulled health care out of the Social Security bill to get Social Security passed and hammered into place. The very worst thing anyone can do is turn their nose up at one of the most progressive victories SINCE Social Security because it had no public option.
The only thing Grayson and Kucinich shouldn't have done was promise something they couldn't deliver.
I don't see anything in *PPACA* that could be considered a step forward. In no way does it re-regulate the healthcare industry or fix healthcare costs, and in fact, it mandates that every American buy health insurance at the inflated prices set by for-profit corporations. It also bans the importation of cheaper drugs from Canada. The one selling point it has - the ban on denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions - has basically no penalty for corporations that drop coverage. It's no wonder HMO stocks were up on the day this thing was signed.
Just play the "line item veto" game.
That's how you slap back at these assholes. You use their own talking points against them, at a time when it is not in their interest to support their own past positions.
"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."
He should've been yelling at members of his own party.
BTW, can someone explain to me why it is so important to Democrats that they receive the approval of Republicans? They shouldn't give a damn how Republicans vote, on this bill or anything else, as long as they have the majority, and yet it's like they view Republicans as their parents and must get their approval before they can do anything.
Dems don't have 2/3rds.
Since Democrats have the majority, any *poison pill* amendments could've been defeated. There was simply no reason for them to force a supermajority on this.
The whole amendment thing was just a way to stall other business. There was no need for them to attach anything to this. Simple. Support it or not.
Of course there was no need for amendments, but the Democrats know that up or down bills almost always fail. They obviously wanted this bill to fail in order to have an issue against the GOP. Republicans use the same tactic against the Democrats.
Of course, they're usually naming post offices and highways and the like, but occasionally other bills are on there too, and they get through without a bunch of bullshit amendments to let conservatives frame it in a light other than what it is.
A Democrat with ball. I'm in love.
One ball? You're easily satisfied.
"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."
Why can’t the Dims have more Weiners?
Cue the Kabuki....
these sociopath's think its okay for a few thousand first responders to die a slow and malingering death, I wonder if they would bat an eye slaughtering 3000 civilians in an instant???

The thing Dr. King feared most was not the haters but the apathy of comfortable white people who chose to do nothing rather than stand for something. He is exactly right.
"We will find fulfillment not in the goods that we have, but in the good we can do for each other."

If I'm not mistaken, out here in California, when the voters get their dander up and try to put something on the ballot as a voter initiative, and it touches upon more than one topic, the court can come along afterwards and rule the thing unconstitutional for that reason. It's about time that we require the same thing for bills going through Congress. It's time to stop this game playing that goes on where something completely unrelated to the bill gets added in later in order to put one over on the citizens. If the bill is about 9/11 responders, then it should be completely illegal to attach something to the bill that's about some other topic (such as illegal immigration). This is just plain dishonest, and this kind of crap needs to come to an end.
I hate our initiative system in California, but totally agree with you about tacking on unrelated provisions to bills. Totally.
Dems have tacked much-needed things onto defense bills when they couldn't get passed any other way. Remember the Matthew Shepard act?
On the other hand, on this one bill it should not have happened. I can understand it more on routine appropriations bills than a bill dealing with one of the most sensitive issues of our time.
Either we have to be consistent and require that all bills stay "on topic", or we just let the normal fun and games go on. It comes down to basic honesty and (that dreaded word) "transparency". Lawmakers need to do their work in the open sunshine so everybody can see what's going on, or admit that the option to skulk around in the dark is just too valuable to give up.
Matthew Sheppard bill went through attached to the appropriations bill because it was expedient, and forced the Senate to approve it as it was (as I recall, anyway). But it would be fine with me if there were rules prohibiting amendments which were off the main focus of the bill. It would certainly be less confusing, and perhaps it would mean guns couldn't be carried on trains, for example.
Fox had Weiner and King on via remote this morning and they got into it again. They were standing side by side and King was acting like an ass as he screamed over Weiner and kept pointing at his face. I thought for sure Weiner was going to punch him and I give him all the credit in the world for his self control. I'm not sure even my peace loving self could have been that decent.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
He is Type A to the core...it had to be pumping during that moment.
The dude seems to energize with anger. It seemed this morning when King was flipping out that Weiner was being energized to keep going if he had to.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
With such a simple idea: If you believe it's right, you vote yes. It really was THAT simple.
A person in DC with passion for what is right. What a novel person and idea.

Weiner is a star. We need more Democrats with spines and brains.
Funny how the Muslim community center is an abomination and a slap in the face of the 9/11 victims, but denying these legimate claims for the damage to the responders' health is responsible and patriotic. Then again "supporting the troops" means putting a sticker on your car and waging war regardless of justification, and doesn't mean voting for their education benefits (and now Alan Simpson wants to gut their medical coverage).
Awesome stuff. I just wish Rep Weiner was on the "right" side of the Israeli-Palestinian issue.

I would clone myself so I could vote for that ticket more times.

I loved Anthony Weiner during the health care debate. He is one of the few strong progressives left.
But I was a little heartbroken when Weiner also thought that Israel's lethal-force handling of the humanitarian effort in the Gaza Blockade was justified and should be supported.
Although, I have heard of, but not seen, Alan Grayson once supporting war in Iran. (A position I hope he has changed his mind on, since.)
Israel's lethal-force handling of the humanitarian effort in the Gaza Blockade, and then saying it was justified and should be supported. That is just plain delusional bullshit. He loses big points for that crap.

How many times does it have to be said? Too many.
its been running amok since about the time Truman created the CIA, instead of black ops conducted abroad, now they also do them here.
Got to hand it to this man,
he has a lot of courage, to stand there and yell at the people who will not cover the expenses of people who stood up on that day, to rescue hundreds of people, police, firemen, emt's, ordinary citizens, and all of those americans who stood up on that day, to save others.
lets see..they didnt want to raise any red flags, on asbestos, chemicals in the dust, and anything that may harm/hurt anybody.
rescue dogs died, and people now are sick, is this what he is talking about?
I can probably dig it up, Ill be searching.
Rather than litigate it all, perhaps it is the right thing to simply pay for their expenses. After all, isn't that what the POTUS asked BP to do?
Love it. Finally a Democrapper who shows a little backbone standing up to the theofascist piles of Republican.
Those pesky responders saved American lives and you know how much Republicans HATE that.
Rep. Weiner (D-NY) was, at one time, Jon Stewart's roommate! Think of the deep discussions that went on in that apartment late at night.
Republicans don't hate the first responders to 9/11 - Republicans hate Americans - and that is clear from their stance against anything that would benefit Americans.
Rethugs hate ORDINARY Americans....as long as you've got lots of money and hate taxes that help people, you're their guy.

This is not my father's America
... this got it will not change anything in future elections or have an affect on the Teabaggin Repugs. After all it's better they vote down help for the 9/11 responders then vote any more of them liberals in.
The Democraps have no balls and this is so typical how the Repugs have a majority even when the don't have the majority.
Where's Obama? How many "out-of-session" executive orders has he written? If the Dems loose seats... they can only blame themselves. How can you be in such a large majority in both houses and STILL not anything done?
Republicans are desperate and out of ammo, and the madness will only get worse, until the electorate stops voting for them.
Does the average voter know that the Republicans represent the richest 1%, and anyone else is just a 'mark' for their games?
It is truly astonishing to me that anyone is still entertaining
the idea that voting Republican is voting in their own best interests!
How can this be?
There has to be an explanation. It's like America's face is being
tweaked by an invisible hand. ;/
This invisible hand is everywhere, but where is it most? How do
we gain control again. Well, i guess the Internet for now, for as
long as the MSM is controlled by a handful of rich elitist bastards.
So how do we proceed? How do we get 3,000,000 good people to vote in their own best interest for once. If we can do that, will they remember how, and vote in their best interest again? The survival of humanity lies here.
Sounds simple. not so easy to implement.
All i do know though, is that in the real world, when something is
trickling down, that means something has gone deeply wrong.
"Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob"
