Welcome to the Republican Tea Party

contract-on-america_627d8.jpg

How refreshing to see an effort to actually hold Republicans accountable for their nasty, selfish attitudes toward fellow citizens. The Democrats have an answer to the Republicans' effort to craft a new "Contract With America".

Behold, the Republican Tea Party Contract ON America, where Democrats are prepared to remind the country of what Republicans have been up to this year.

Contract high points include:

  1. Repeal the Affordable Care Act (Health Insurance Reform)

Put insurance companies back in charge, repeal tax credits for small businesses, allow insurance companies to deny coverage based on preexisting conditions and to drop coverage when a person gets too sick and make prescription drugs for seniors less affordable.

  2. Privatize Social Security or phase it out altogether

Turn the guaranteed retirement benefits of America's seniors over to Wall Street CEOs by putting Social Security at risk in the stock market or, as some Republicans have called for, phase out Social Security altogether and end a program millions of American seniors rely on for their survival.
  3. End Medicare as it presently exists

Phase out and end Medicare as it presently exists for future generations of seniors -- ending Medicare's guaranteed healthcare benefits for more than 40 million American seniors -- and replace it with a voucher system which will result in higher premiums and fewer services for seniors.

  4. Extend the Bush tax breaks for the wealthy and big oil

At a cost of nearly $700 billion, extend the Bush tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and big oil, which are set to expire and which have and will continue to explode the federal budget deficit.

  5. Repeal Wall Street Reform

Roll back the toughest consumer protections ever enacted, allow banks to continue to grow too big to fail, and ensure that predatory lenders continue to utilize their most abusive practices.

  6. Protect those responsible for the oil spill and future environmental catastrophes

Cap liabilities for those responsible for environmental disasters like the Gulf oil spill and let companies like BP decide which victims deserve compensation for the disaster and what the timeline for relief should be.
  7. Abolish the Department of Education

Put the big banks back in charge of student loans and put an end to federal assistance for public schools.

  8. Abolish the Department of Energy

End America's investments in a clean-energy future and disband the organization responsible for oversight of nuclear materials.

  9. Abolish the Environmental Protection Agency

Gut the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act -- which together protect our kids from air pollution and keep drinking water safe -- and disband the watchdog that holds polluters accountable.

  10. Repeal the 17th Amendment

Take away your right to pick your U.S. Senator

That's what they've promised. Not just a walk back to the Bush years, a walk back to another century. Perhaps they could repeal the Emancipation Proclamation, too.

I wouldn't be surprised if privatization/censoring of our socialist internet is within range of their ideology.

And, isn't it just karma that February is also Black History month.....yuck!!

Rethuglican Tea Party Agenda:

1. GET THE N*GGER OUT OF THERE.

For many that is it in a nutshell. Nutshell seems very appropriate in the tea party biz.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

NUTS in the Party.

Perhaps they could repeal the Emancipation Proclamation, too.

It will be a tough fight, but once they retake the White House VP Huckabee will cast the 51st vote.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

I love the Mafia-hit connotations of 'contract on'. It's like they're going to whack America. And indeed, that's what they want to do.

diffrntdrummr's picture

By saying "Contract on America". A more accurate assessment of what they want to do is more like " Thinning the herd". To what end? Who knows?. That question would take me to some very dark places and I'm not going there.

Now we'll have both the GOP and the Tea-people screaming about how they have nothing to do with each other. Nothing in common at all except Obama derangement syndrome.

Speaking of student loans...

Is anyone on this site interested/available to write something up about the changes to student loans. It's REALLY difficult to find what's up with this sort of stuff and contacting my government official doesn't help... they still don't seem to get the difference between the different student loan types out there.

I have Sallie Mae private loans. They were guaranteed by the government. The interest rates are nuts and I'm paying over $1,000 a month to them on an original balance of about $60,000.

I can't even figure out what my options are. I'm under the impression things were changed to help me in this regard, but obviously Sallie Mae isn't exactly cooperative with me doing anything or finding anything out about it.

So I'd really love to see C&L or someone I can trust discuss this on a public level.

Today's addition: make sure to hurt small businesses to benefit much bigger businesses, which 'category crush' the small ones almost at will.

... of not being a sycophant, exactly why is #5 referring to the banking "reform" as " the toughest consumer protections ever enacted"? It does nothing about payday lending, and still leaves us quite naked to the abuses of derivatives trading and virtually unregulated commodities markets. It was, much like the health insurance bill (don't call it a healthcare bill, it would upset *real* health care legislation) a watered down compromised between pseudo-conservative and uber-conservative politicians.

Bring back Glass-Steagall if you're so committed to banking reform, or enact a single payer system for healthcare if you're so interested in how insurance companies are dicking people. Doing any less is basically masturbation. I'm sure it feels good, but it's not really accomplishing much.

There, fixed that for you.

The only reason why this stupid political system is in the current state of crapulence is that we have allowed it to become this terrible by accepting mediocrity instead of expecting something better from politicians.

If they say "reform health insurance", I expect some single payer action. If they say "reform banks", I expect bankers to be walking funny for months. This half-assed reacharound crap is killing us.

That was the Renaissance.

This was in consequence of Pope Innocent VIII, Summi Desiderantes, in December 5, CE 1484, declaring Witchcraft an active heresy and conspiracy against God, and to disbelieve in it a punishable crime, when before it was the Canon Episcopi, first mentioned in Libri de Synodalibus Causis et Disciplinis Ecclesiasticis, CE 909 (Supposedly going back to the 4th century), where Witchcraft was a delusion caused by Satan where deluded women flew with Diana, and it was a sin to believe in it.

Funny thing, when Shakespeare wrote Macbeth, his three witches didn't cavort with Satan, but with Hecate, and that it was performed for King James I, writer of the book Daemonologie in 1597.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

I guess when those people can only think in black and white, things seem a lot more simplistic than they really are.

Back in 1994, critics and activists called the Republicans' Contract With America "Contract On America," too. Back then, though, what's now called the Tea Party was just referred to as militias and white supremacists.

A lot of people talk about them wanting to return to the 50s, but really when you listen to their complaints you realize they really want to return back to the 90's, 1890's. A time before the progressive movements had taken place, when powerful trusts and corporations were completely unregulated in any way and the Federal government was tiny and weak.
Trust me, if you know history, the gilded age is what these people really yearn for, most of their policies and ideas are throwbacks to the Laissez faire type of capitalism of the late 19th century.

They like to imagine that they are patriots in the same vein as the founders, which is why you hear so much about the founders from them, it's a sort of ancestor worship except they tend to make up their own version of the founders. But I still think their way of thinking fits in best with the gilded age and the 19th centuries way of viewing things.

And at this point, 30 years of following their laissez-faire principals in this country has resulted in 1890s levels of inequality. Some studies even show present US inequality exceeding the levels of the 1890s. The Gilded Age of the 1890s is also referred to as the age of conspicuous consumption, which kinda makes me think of the 1980s, when the current wave of laissez-faire began.
