South Carolina Republican Joe Wilson has since apologized for his buffoonery during President Obama's speech last night, but the genie is already out of the bottle. He spoke his racist mind and he, like much of his teabagging base, just couldn't contain his hatred of the president and brown people.

Less than 24 hours later, CQ Politics is coming to the rescue! You see, it's not that Wilson is an unhinged biggot, it's just that he's under a lot of stress right now because he has four sons in the military and some could be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan:

You might be a little stressed out, too, if you had four sons in the military services these days.

Rep. Joe Wilson's "Lie! You lie!" outburst during President Obama's healthcare address was uncharacteristic of the four-term South Carolina Republican, observers say.

But Wilson, a colonel in the state's national guard himself, has four sons in the military services, two of whom have served in Iraq.

Wilson's spokesman did not respond to a question as to whether his sons' military situations contributed to his emotional outburst.

I'm not trying to minimizing Wilson's sons' service or the stress that all parents feel when their child is in the military during a time of war. I am, however, calling out CQ's Jeff Stein for pulling this garbage straight out of his backside. Make no mistake -- Wilson's outburst was pure, blind rage. Wilson clearly states in his "apology" that he was sorry for his actions, but he still believes Obama is a liar:

"While I disagree with the president's statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable," said Wilson, who sits on the armed services and foreign affairs committee. Read on...

Wilson's outburst got more attention on the news last night than anything Obama said.

Coincidence? Maybe.

Reasonberg's picture

It's so irritating when such childish Republicans and teabaggers monopolize the debate when it comes to health care or anything progressive.

JohnnyRock's picture

Though I may not agree with republicans on most issues and this should not be an issue, Joe has the right to say what he may. Look, there should be respect for president of the good ole US of A when speaking but he,Joe, has the freedom to voice his opinion. Don't take that away.

miss_kitty's picture

This wouldn't be an issue if the Thugs hadn't called anyone who called out Bush on his stuff traitors, seditious and people in need of execution.

Thanks for signing up and voicing your 'concern' over his 'free speech.'

So what you are saying he can pipe up inappropriately, but for people on a blog to criticise, we are interfering w/ HIS free speech? It's ok for you to 'take away' our right to voice OUR opinions.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

ThunderMonkey's picture

taking away Mr. Wilson's right to free speech. We're just holding him accountable to what he says.

He calls Obama a liar during a speech... well, all points of decorum aside, Mr. Wilson is wrong about what he said. The President didn't lie. Mr. Wilson is just making shit up.

If you want to make shit up, by all means, help yourself (not you JohnnyRock, but those that like to make shit up). However, they shouldn't cry like a baby when they get called out onto the floor for it.

Mr. Wilson got to say what he wanted. His freedom of speech was never hindered. No one is going to stop him from behaving like an idiot in the future when he opens his mouth and spews out something asinine.

...my wife last night asked me what a "concern troll" is and now I have a defining specimen.

Obama made a great speech and the top story is that some jerk interrupted him. He discussed important points and gave lots of information that people should hear.

What is wrong with our media?

I hope and pray when he runs in his state they will show this piece and he will lose. For this prick to use his sons that are in the military like Palin son is disgraceful. I am a wife of a retired soldier and I take offense to that. I pray that his sons who are soldiers would not disrepect their commander in chief.

Logan, you're already reproducing the meme:

"Make no mistake -- Wilson's outburst was pure, blind rage."

THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT. His outburst has nothing to do with rage or emotions or stress over his sons. It was a planned bit of propaganda, a publicity stunt, KNOWING FULL WELL that the (U.S.) media would key in on it.

And guess what, it worked. (Except abroad, where people seem to be covering the content of the speech. I didn't see a single mention of the jeers.)

They picked the representative least likely to lose his seat for calling Obama a liar. No worries.

toiboi's picture

and when dems call this out and outline their own policies rather than defending them against conservative talking polnts, they will be one step closer to building their party.

this was no more a spontaneous outburst than Cindy Sheehan wearing that anti-Bush tee-shirt.

It is interesting to me that it is the GOPukes who are leading the deconstruction of politics, fomenting the theatrics of it, casting doubt by their hijinks on the presumed seriousness of the enterprise...This is politics by King Ubu, the monarch of absurdism and precursor of surrealism. And because they have the "microphone" (as t'were), their absurdities and affectations and rampant, manifest idiocies actually DEFINE the narrative. It's as if they decided that if they can no longer be in control even for so brief a period as four years, they're willing to erode the foundations and raze the entier edifice...

It's never their fault. No idea about personal responsibility. They think it's when someone spends themselves into bnky, trying to pay medical bills that insurance didn't cover.

Where was this concerned, earnest assessor of prevaricating presidents when the simian warmonger was invading a sovereign nation and directly responsible for the deaths of 300K Iraqi civilians?? This outburst was straight-ahead partisan politics and reflective of the highly-developed Republican lizard brain. The excuse for his behavior is laughable.

" Make no mistake -- Wilson's outburst was pure, blind rage."

whether or not it was pure, blind rage, we cannot know that, only surmise.

He is still responsible for his actions.

btw: in prev. threads and elsewhere in discussions of this incident, the Brit/Canadian shouters & hecklers were mentioned. note that calling an mp a liar is not protected by parliamentary privilege and if offender does not immediately apologize, they can be removed from the House and suspended for five days.

Sec_Humanist's picture

In the Canadian and British parliaments/House of Commons, a member is turfed by the Speaker if he or she uses the term "liar" when referring to another member. The respective Speakers are also not taken in by the ploy of a member stating something like "Although I am not permitted to describe a fellow member as a liar, I would like to describe .. . blah, blah, blah . ." That age-old strategy was likely nicked at Eton or one of the other lovely, English upper-crust preparatory schools.

How about the Iraq War, Mr. Wilson????? One of Bush's advisors before the war was fired because he projected war costs to be substantially more than what Bush wanted to hear.

Although talking about shrillson a lot since this happened, there has been a decided turn in the media (at least in the media I listen to) toward not only a serious discussion of the topic but also a certain sympathy toward "the president" (as the chief executive of our country, not necessarily Obama himself). The old-timers in the media seem to be gravitating toward "a dialog of respect."

I think Wilson's outburst, while certainly calculated, may have shot both him and opposition to insuring more people who lack it, in the ass.

d) they know illegals is a hot-button issue

e) they know Wilson's seat is safe (he's in solid deep-south red territory)

Joe Wilson chose to support the Iraqi War. He has demeaned those who would not support the lies of Bush and Cheney.

His sons have shown great character in following what they believe. However, why did Joe retire(skipped out?)from the reserves in 2003 after voting for the Iraqi War Resolution in 2002?(He was in a mechanized infantry unit.)

My advice to Joe's enablers is you need to be honest with yourself, others, and God, but not necessarily in that order.

This is such a surprise. Not.

And don't give me crap about how many of you are southerners and are so surprised by this. And you probably knew it, too.

Instead of trying to prevent the US from invading Iraq, he was busy crafting this important piece of SC state legislation, H 3818:

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DIXIE CHICKS APOLOGIZE TO THE MILITARY FAMILIES IN THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND THE UNITED STATES FOR THE UNPATRIOTIC AND UNNECESSARY COMMENTS MADE BY THEIR LEAD SINGER BEFORE THEY BEGIN THEIR UNITED STATES TOUR ON MAY 1, 2003, IN GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO REQUEST THAT THEY PERFORM A FREE CONCERT FOR TROOPS AND MILITARY FAMILIES IN SOUTH CAROLINA AS AN EXPRESSION OF THEIR SINCERITY.

Whereas, the Dixie Chicks are a popular and influential country music group from Texas; and

Whereas, before a recent London concert, Natalie Maines, the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, said that she was ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas; and

Whereas, members of the United States Armed Forces are outraged at the anti-American sentiment expressed by the Dixie Chicks; and

Whereas, there is a large military presence in the State of South Carolina, whom the Dixie Chicks have offended by their comments; and

Whereas, before the Dixie Chicks kick off their United States tour in Greenville on May 1, 2003, the House of Representatives and the people of South Carolina request that Natalie Maines apologize and that the group perform a free concert for the South Carolina servicemen and women and their families.

The four sons in the military defense doesn't work when you're not trying to prevent a bullshit war.

Just go to his website: his biggest issue is illegal immigration.

It's most certainly a conspiracy, planned and approved by leaders of the Republican party.

They created the propaganda moment, they wrote the script, they acted it out at the right moment, and like any corporate PR stunt, it was pulled off without anybody in the media asking, "Did we just get punked?" "Have we just spent news time selling someone's product?"

BECAUSE THE MEDIA ARE DUMBER THAN THE REPUBLICANS. They've been falling for the same tactics over and over and over.

Like the L.A news, they mindlessly send out the choppers to follow the car chase, never asking "why?" or "are we providing a valuable service here?" or "are we just contributing to the perpetuation of this idiocy?"

but if all the Hannity, Dobbs, Beck's of the world really want to change and stop illegals ----then WHITE PEOPLE need to stop hiring them! Plain and simple! Quit paying them under the table or if you own a big business check their paper work more closely -----it's not minorities hiring them - it's us!
