Xenophobic Arizona Sheriff, Joe Arpaio, has raised a lot of eyebrows. Besides his very public hatred of Hispanics, he's also established ties with a Neo-Nazi group in his home state. Arpaio's obliteration of civil rights has finally caught up with him and the Obama Administration is finally pushing back:
A controversial Arizona sheriff known for taking a hard line against illegal immigrants has been stripped of some of his powers in what he described as a political move by the Obama administration.
Under a two-year-old agreement with the federal department of homeland security, Arpaio and his deputies had been authorised to enforce federal immigration law by arresting suspected illegal immigrants in the field and by checking the immigration status of people arrested on other offences.
But after drawing thousands of complaints and a civil rights investigation from the justice department, Arpaio was this week stripped of his federal authority to make immigration arrests. County attorney Andrew Thomas, one of Arpaio's supporters, condemned the "setback in the fight against illegal immigration". Read on...
This is a positive sign and I applaud the White House for taking making this happen. It's long overdue.

The Sheriff is a nutcase.
It doesn't speak well of his community that they allow him to hold his position.
He's an idiot, and a bully and should go.
But people outside Arizona may not realize the very real problems presented by illegal immigration, especially farther south in the state.
Beautiful areas like the Chiricahua mountains have become dangerous, the trails are heavily littered, and natural habitat is being destroyed. Rural houses and outbuildings are routinely broken into by illegals looking for food and a place to sleep. A lot of the home owners have barricaded themselves behind barbed wire and are afraid to leave home overnight. And we haven't even gotten to the problems created by drug runners and cartels.
Once you realize that there are very real issues and are not limited to the "they took our jobs!" rhetoric and xenophobia, you can begin to understand why Sheriff Joe enjoys more widespread support than he deserves.

The rhetoric and the xenophobia lead to denying basic human services, which lead to desperate situations with immigrants. If you force people into "natural habitats" and to live a life of fear and desperation, this is the end-result.

Read about what it has done to thousands of farmers in Yucatan and elsewhere in the 15 years since. And read up about how Yucatan is an enormous oil field, and then you'll begin to get the picture. 300 million residents in the US. 22M illegals and 12M of them working, I believe, were pretty recent numbers I have seen. So not even 8% of the populace accounts for illegals? How low do they want that number to be?

i'm more left of center than most of you all here. but in this case sheriff joe is correct, he is supposed to enforce the laws. identity theft, fraudulent use of a ss number, and being undocumented is against the law. if he has probable cause, they should do a background check. that's the way its supposed to be. too many law enforcement agency's are cherry picking laws they want to enforce. that is not their mandate. i see the extensive damage going on now, and the stress on the system that illegals are putting on our hospitals, schools, jails, roads, etc. one of the major factors that California is bankrupt.

the one thing that we should've learned over the last eight years that corporations aren't responsible for anything. George Bush & Co. more than illustrate that for us. Whether it's Halliburton or KBR or J.P. Morgan Chase, Lehman Brothers or Merrill Lynch, corporations have been abusing the American public for years. They've been shipping our jobs offshore or lobbying our congressmen to allow illegal aliens (economic refugees) to enter this country with almost no consequences. We've allowed these people to work here in the United States. We know where they congregate. We know what jobs they're taking yet there has not been any significant attempts to curb their flow into our country. There hasn't been any significant attempts to hold corporations accountable. The fines that we issue these days are nothing to a multibillion dollar corporation. It is time that these wealthy CEOs are held responsible along with their corporations. The United States needs to levy fines that are in the hundreds of millions of dollars and in some cases billions of dollars. But let's not kid ourselves, we live in a fantasy land if we think that this is ever going to happen.
We can't even hold companies responsible for destroying our economy -- accountable. We watched unmitigated fraud. Credit default swaps? Really? If credit default swaps are a good idea then why can't I take out fire insurance all my neighbors house? Simply crazy.
