WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has tapped a former top aide of his predecessor George W. Bush to a key post on a board overseeing government-sponsored international broadcasting.
Dana Perino, the first Republican woman to serve as White House press secretary, was appointed late Wednesday to the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG).
Created in 1994, the BBG oversees all of the US government's non-military international broadcasting outlets, including Voice of America, Alhurra television, Radio Sawa, TV Marti, Radio Free Asia and Radio Free Europe. Read on...
Where to begin? I understand that President Obama campaigned on the idea of bipartisanship, but this is truly an insult. Forget that he is appointing an intellectual lightweight who ran cover for, and spread propaganda for the worst president in American history. Dana Perino stood before reporters and routinely lied to them and the world -- even defending the use of torture, calling it "effective, safe and legal."
And now President Obama believes that she has the integrity to hold a key position in an agency that oversees government-sponsored, international broadcasting?
Perino's appointment must be confirmed by the Senate, so it's not a done deal, but we have to make our voices heard. Contact your Senators and let them know your thoughts on the matter.

BY LAW, (not any Obama desire for bipartisanship) the board to which Obama appointed Perino has to include four members of a party other than that of the President.

Mitch McConnell urged Obama to appoint Perino to one of the Republican slots. Given the delays the Republican Senate has created for other appointments of the President, it would be hard for McConnell to delay confirmation of a board that includes an appointee he wanted.
If Perino is a lightweight, who better to fill a legally require opposition party spot.

Here's the sad part of it all. Come November of 2012, after the big conventions, when we have Obama/Biden running against Cheney/McCain? all the very same Progressives (myself included) who are complaining about Obama will buy the same B.S. again.
It's time to break away from the Democratic Party and give the American people a REAL choice: Single Payer health care, end all wars and cut the Pentagon's budget (heed Eisenhower's warning), abolish the Federal Reserve Bank and nationalize our currency, stop bailing out Main Street and bring high-paying infrastructure (hospitals anyone??) building jobs to the American people etc. etc. No retreat. No surrender. No backroom dirty deal making.
We have to start somewhere and I think NOW is the time to begin a new party. A few election cycles would have to be lost in the process, but over time the new party would grow and the old would fade away into the ugly shadows of history (where it rightfully belongs).
I would add massive campaign finance reform to your list, and argue that if we got busy NOW, and get our internet network established NOW, we COULD win the next election. I think it's time--way past time--to gather together all US citizens who count themselves among the awake and informed.

I've worked with some 'reporters' who were little more than faces. Can't spell, needed hand-holding from their producer, their editor, and a dozen takes because their hair wasn't right.
I have a Bachelor's in Radio/Television, with 23 years working for a CBS affilate station in the 5th largest market in the U.S.
It is my opinion that Ms. Perino's credibility is severely hampered by her role within the Bush Administration, and - having been a front for a corrupt and unprincipled presidency, has no place advising on the operation of government-sponsored communications.
There must be Republican academics who are qualified for this position.

My objections are that Perino's resume happens to include working for an administration who lied to the public, planted a fake reporter in the press room, and contributed to selling torture - even though it was against federal law and international treaty.

I have suggested repeatedly that if someone wants to suggest a better Republican than Perino they should do so. In fact, Obama appointed three others. None has attracted any attention because they lack Perino's visibility and guilt by serving in the Bush administration.
My comments has not been aimed at those who oppose Perino. They have been aimed at those who say this appointment proves Obama's bipartisanship is a sell out. In this case it is legally required.

What IS clear is that Obame is not willing or able to challenge the DC status quo. Perino is a horrible choice, and if Obama is all about "keeping enemies closer", then he does so at a significant risk of losing more base support.

I admit, I have had to keep myself from posting before doing a little research on subjects before, and this one is no different. I didn't know the 'bi-partisan' requirement here. I'm still a little put off by the actual choice of Perino, but simply because she was a member of the Bush Admin. I'd really like to know the reasons behind this particular choice. I'm leaning toward 'political expediency, myself...
I thought I was just a projectionist who should, in the words of a long term commenter I guess I must therefore respect should "go fuck" myself because I must have a little dick and want to have sex with Dana Perino. But then that would make me a pea brained bully to those on the intelligent left who comment here.
