British workers usually enjoy a TEN day xmas holiday from dec 24th to jan 1st. :) This makes it a true holiday, one that families can enjoy together.
Comparing the UK to the US approach to xmas/winter break, theres the same build up and anticipation in both countries, but US tends to be 'wham bang TY maam, where did xmas go' !!! In the UK with the ten day thing, you know it is there and start longing to go back on the 2nd to escape the rugrats ;)

and while we are on the subject, why not extend and mandate the twelve or so holidays that the Federal Apparatchik workers enjoy to the wider general public...
