Fox Nation Calls New Climate Bill "Treason"

The headline of the linked article is “House Passes Milestone Energy, Climate Change Bill.” Obviously not happy with the AP headline, the Fox Nation writers, in order to put it in right wing terms the pitchfork gang can understand and appreciate, tweaked it thusly: “Treason? House Passes Direct Assault On Industrial Base.” It is accompanied by a photo of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The AP article is what real journalism is all about, as it describes what happened in the House of Representatives with no reference to “treason.” The Fox Nation headline is a subjective statement of pure right wing propaganda by those who haven’t read the constitution and is aimed at those who are constitutionally illiterate. But then, in Fox Nation, anyone who dares disagree with the solons of right wing dogma are traitors. Republican Rep Michele Bachman claims that Jesus has taken care of global warming, so why worry? BTW, Republican Representative John Shimkus said that "This is the largest assault on democracy and freedom in this country that I have ever experienced.” He didn’t accuse the other side of treason. But it’s ironic, don’t ya think, that the same folks who accused those of disagreeing with Bush administration of being traitors, are now those who are disagreeing with the Obama administration to the point of advocating secession.
I swear, these Murdoch minions will not be happy until there's a full-out civil war in this country.

I oppose H.R. 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. The reason is simple. It won’t address the problem. In fact, it might make the problem worse.
It sets targets that are too weak, especially in the short term, and sets about meeting those targets through Enron-style accounting methods. It gives new life to one of the primary sources of the problem that should be on its way out– coal – by giving it record subsidies. And it is rounded out with massive corporate giveaways at taxpayer expense. There is $60 billion for a single technology which may or may not work, but which enables coal power plants to keep warming the planet at least another 20 years.
Worse, the bill locks us into a framework that will fail. Science tells us that immediately is not soon enough to begin repairing the planet. Waiting another decade or more will virtually guarantee catastrophic levels of warming. But the bill does not require any greenhouse gas reductions beyond current levels until 2030.
Dang, I wish he was President.

This is response to the concerns about talk show hosts and other persons who broadcast statements that could incite violence or other illegal activity.
The Federal Communications Commission is responsible for the licensing and regulation of radio and television broadcast stations and for assuring that they comply with Commission rules and statutory requirements. Generally speaking, however, the Commission is prohibited from involving itself in the content of specific programs or otherwise engaging in activities that might be regarded as program censorship. Consequently, the Commission cannot direct broadcasters to refrain from presenting this kind of program material.
With respect to broadcasts inciting violation of law, the First Amendment permits free speech to be curtailed when it is directed toward inciting or producing dangerous activity and is likely to produce such action. Other than under these circumstances, mere advocacy of the use of force or of law violation is protected by the Constitution.
Even where the so-called "clear and present danger" test is met, the Commission believes that any review leading to a curtailment of speech should be performed by the appropriate criminal law enforcement authorities. Accordingly, it is up to federal, state, or local criminal law enforcement agencies to analyze the content and context of the speech and to determine whether there is a clear and present danger that it will result in imminent lawless action.

The Constitution recognizes international treaties with the president often as the negotiater and signer, and the senate with the advice and consent. It even specifies in Article III that the Supreme Court considers international treaties in their deliberations.

My problem with that definition of treason in the Constitution is that witnesses are not overly reliable, and can be orchestrated by the government. Under that section someone like Guy Fawkes could still be executed.
And under the confession in open court, that's how the Inquisition worked. They tortured people until they confessed, and then brought them into court, badly burnt, bleeding or broken to confess "freely" in court without coercion.
And then when they were trundled slowly off to the stake, so the crowd could taunt them and pelt them with clods, before that they either had their tongues cut out, or clamped with heavy wood clamps, so they could not retract their confession.

Supporters of the bill point out that coal use will continue to increase until at least 2020 because electric utilities will continue to use dirty coal, the prime source of pollution.
“With 2 billion tons of offsets per year, we are told that electric utilities will reduce carbon emissions at places other than their generating plants. So they really don’t have to actually decrease their emissions at all when it counts the most and coal fired CO2 emissions will increase. No wonder there are 26 active coal plant applications. Will increased CO2 emissions be our gift to the next generation? Apparently, the planet is not melting; it is just getting better for polluters.”
That having been said, I just happened to be reading my June 29th New Yorker magazine last night when I came upon an article entitled, "The Catastrophist": N.A.S.A.'s climate expert delivers the news no one wants to hear" by Elizabeth Kolbert.
James Hansen, known as "the father of global warming" published a paper in 1981 in Science where he forecast that the following decade would be unusually warm. (That turned out to be the case.) In the same paper, he predicted that the nineteen-nineties would be warmer still. (That also turned out to be true). Finally, he forecast that by the end of the twentieth century a global-warming signal would emerge from the "noise" of natural climate variability. (This, too, proved to be correct.)
Flash forward through the article...In December, 2008, Hansen composed a personal appeal to Barack and Michelle Obama: "A stark scientific conclusion, that we must reduce greenhouse gases below present amounts to preserve nature and humanity, has become clear. It is still possible to avert climate disasters, but only if policies are consistent with what science indicates to be required."
Hansen gave the letter to Obama's chief science adviser, John Holdren (a good friend) and he promised to deliver the letter. Later in an email Holdren told Hansen, "I cannot discuss what I have or haven't given or said to the President."
In one recent lecture Hansen explained, "If we burn all the fossil fuels and put all the CO2 into the atmosphere, we will be sending the planet back to the ice-free state,"...it will take a while to get there. If you melt all the ice, sea levels will go up 250 feet. So you can't do that without producing a different planet."
And here's the kicker from Hansen: "Because we can't control what Saudi Arabia and Russia do with their oil, the only way we can constrain the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is to CUT OFF THE COAL SOURCE BY SAYING EITHER WE WILL LEAVE THE COAL IN THE GROUND OR WE WILL BURN IT ONLY AT POWER PLANTS THAT ACTUALLY CAPTURE THE CO2."
He says that at this time there are NO CLEAN COAL PLANTS, and for technological and economic reasons it's not clear that there ever will be!
Regarding the "Cap and Trade" system in the bill at hand Hansen says, "The only defense of this monstrous absurdity is, well, you are right. It's not good. But the train has left the station. If the train has left, it had better be derailed soon or the planet, and all of us, will be in deep do-do."
So, my point is, as a Progressive thinker, that Obama and the Democrats haven't gone nearly far enough with this bill. It's just another stupid Band-aid on a malignant tumor.
Same goes for the Democrats' ideas on solving the health care CRISIS....let's not bother the "criminal status quo"....just put a Band-aid on the tumor so we can't see it...

The charts point at previous climate changes, none of which seem to have the current rate of change.
What point are you making with that graph? The scale is billions of years, all man's influence will be over the past 100years. The worry is not how much the climate has changed, its how is the climate going to react to all man is doing to it, i.e. adding unseen amounts of carbon dioxide.

I read several pages of the comments from the Fox Nation site. It would be interesting to see how many of the commenters actually went for higher education. They think freedoms are being taken away, though no one lists any. They believe the bill is treason, but cannot list why. They also conflate socialism, communism, fascism, marxism and every other -ism. I doubt they many of them actually know the difference. It is a sad state of affairs over there.

I think that representing Iraq as an imminent threat with knowledge that such was not the fact, in order to entangle this nation in war with that country, drawing resources away from Afghanistan, was treasonable.

On the bailouts and on Obama's stimulus package, I thought there was a rush, since I had watched programing in England Mar 2008 that described the mortgage backed securities and derivatives fiasco.
However, it has been quite clear for several years that if the inflation in health care isn't checked, eventually it will consume the entire GDP. It's at 16% of GDP, while our competitors are at 11% of GDP. Indeed, the only impasse to a successful health bill is a refusal to copy systems used elsewhere in the world that would lower costs. Separately, it seems settled among the world's scientists that Global Warming is happening.
The problem is the massive corruption within the government, rendering it incapable of formulating policies that benefit the people. Dennis Kucinich on why he voted against this bill.
