Hey Kids, Christianity Pays! Just Ask Rick Warren...

"People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." 1 Timothy 6:9-10

I wonder if Jesus feels that Rick Warren is pierced with many griefs:

Evangelical pastor Rick Warren's plea for donations to fill a $900,000 deficit at his Southern California megachurch brought in $2.4 million, Warren announced to cheers during a sermon at the church on Saturday.

Warren said the amount raised after the appeal was posted online Wednesday included only money parishioners brought in person to Saddleback Church by New Year's Eve. More was arriving by hand and by mail, he said.

"This is pretty amazing," said Warren, who made the announcement by bringing out 24 volunteers each holding a sign for $100,000. "I don't think any church has gotten a cash offering like that off a letter."

The pastor said he planned to talk about what he called his church's "radical generosity" in the rest of the weekend's sermons. He said the total came from members, and the donations were all under $100.

"We're starting the new decade with a surplus," he said. "It came from thousands of ordinary people. This was not one big fat cat."

The posting on Warren's Web site read: "With 10 percent of our church family out of work due to the recession, our expenses in caring for our community in 2009 rose dramatically while our income stagnated."

Warren said the church had largely managed to stay within its budget during the year, but "the bottom dropped out" when Christmas donations were down.

The letter cited the church's accomplishments in 2009 and detailed how the donations would be used, including the church's food pantry, homeless ministry, counseling and support groups.

I realize that churches require donations for support, but I'm having a hard time with the notion that the man who wrote The Purpose-Driven Life and all its ancillaries was nearly as hard up as his flock was, with 10% unemployment.

Maybe Jonathan Turley has the right idea:

First, there was Rod Parsley saying that Satan has been messing around with his bank accounts and needs a massive infusion of cash to fight his demonic plan, here. Now, fellow Evangelical pastor Rick Warren has asked for roughly a million dollars from his faithful due to a few end of the year shortfalls in cash flow. Given these calls to the faithful, I wish to add my own discovery of a demonic plan to deny me of ready cash and call upon everyone on this blog to send me money immediately to fight for righteous and redemptive blogging.

There you go...God is commanding you to send me money, even though I have a decent living and am more fortunate than most human beings on this planet. You don't want to go against God's design, do you?

Jerry Farwell and Pat Robertson has not done to bad.. They have been throwing out miracles cures for people over the television air waves for many years now.. Did you ever wonder if they received more funds for cures on their reruns on not..

Can you believe they tell people to raise their hands up and receive the cure they are giving them over the television and the reruns multiplies the cures they are sending over the air ways..

Can you imagine people taking advantage of sick people with very sick illnesses for money and calling themselves Christian leaders...

Just think the money they take from sick people is even tax free...

Prosperity Gospel is considered blasphemous and heretical by mainstream Christianity, but it appears to be the religion of Warren, Osteen and the more popular televangelists and touring "preachers."

Rick Warren is a perfect symbol of religion. He is either incapable of recognizing what a racket he's running, or he's predictably continuing the charade.

Rick Warren, Oral Roberts, Ted Haggard -- religious institutions attract hucksters and sociopaths, because it is an authoritarian structure with content designed to do nothing OTHER THAN facilitate and assist the authoritarian structure itself. In other words, churches may provide charitable services, but a church's job is first and foremost to "grow" the church.

Carlin said it perfectly, as always:

"Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes... and they always need a little more..."

I have no problem with fellowship and community and traditions and rituals. I have a BIG problem that the only institutions left to carry on these positive things are based upon faith in ancient, barbaric nonsense -- or, at least, the authoritarian deference to institutions based upon nonsense. (Most people never consider the basis of Christianity, for example. They leave that to their religious leaders. Those leaders, in turn, avoid admitting what they know about the origins of (and philosophical conundrums inherent in) their dogma.)

The Christians who have a problem with that statement shouldn't waste their energy railing at me, they should speak out against the people giving their faith a black eye. It seems to me though that most Christians are people who are afraid of dying trying to buy their way into heaven and the charlatans who lead them encourage that belief and behavior.

Just because he doesn't take a paycheck from the church directly doesn't mean he's not getting plenty of money from somewhere else.

Yeah, he's fleecing the flock and being most un-Biblical about it as well.

Turn the Bluegrass Blue's picture

I'd say Rick Warren's donors shouldn't have given him all that money, but what's the use? Do we really think they'd spend it on some worthwhile cause otherwise, and not donate it to some other fruitless exercise in evil, i.e. SarahPAC? Sure, it's hucksterism at its most blatant and shameless, but these people get what they deserve. Sure, whatever, throw money at your pot-bellied ideologue and squint your eyes, hold your breath, and wish really, really, really, really hard that abortion will end; or that "Seventh Heaven" is kept on for another season; or that Carrie Prejean's remaining sex tapes are never found again, or any of the other practices in futility you're told to perform. A fool and his money are soon parted.

I heard about this over the weekend and my "another evangelical crook gets wealthier off of his dopey followers" light went off. I researched Rick Warren and there's convincing evidence that Mr. Warren may be in this for the good of his fellow man.
Mr. Warren is also an author who's books have sold millions of copies. As the money rolled in from his book sales, Warren stopped taking his $110,000 annual salary and repaid the church for his 25 years of salary since its founding. He and his wife became "reverse tithers," he said, keeping 10 percent of their income and giving away the rest, including $13 million in 2004. He's also raised millions of dollars and formed his P.E.A.C.E. plan (a five-point plan for global action that calls for church-led efforts to tackle global poverty and disease, including the spread of HIV/AIDS, and to support literacy and education efforts around the world).
So maybe Rick Warren, even though I disagree with his position on religious/social matters, is a truly rightious human.
Can anyone shed any light on him? Is he a stand up guy, or just another religious nut who's in it for the money?

Turn the Bluegrass Blue's picture

...unless you suffer from teh ghey. Then, he'll stop at nothing, including his own spending limits, to make sure you're still a second-class citizen. But, aside from that, I'm sure he's a swell fella.

We got lost up in the Laguna Beach area last year. We turned around in the parking lot of a large building. We all realized at the same time that it was Rick Warren's Saddleback Church. Holy Shit! You should see that fucking place! As members of a small (400 members) Episcopalian congregation we were appalled at the opulence of the place. Gaudy is one word to describe it. I like to tease my wife on Sunday mornings and tune in Joel Osteen. It amazes me because I actually try to discern what it is he is actually saying. I have come to the conclusion that he is basically just a bullshit artist. A damn good bullshit artist, but just a bullshit artist. That motherfucker could sell snow to an Eskimo. Its a bit lonely as a liberal nondenominational Christian but here goes - Warren is not a prosperity gospel preacher. His Purpose Driven Life is premised on "its not about us" which is really antithetical to the prosperity goofballs. By all accounts, Warren has been very generous with the money he made on the book, having given away 90% or more of the profits. His church must have huge expenses in its substantial ministries and overhead. If there's a financial shortfall, you either raise money, cut programs or start firing people. He asked for funds and it appears a large number of folks gave small amounts. That's grass roots support.

On the other hand, I'm not happy about his entry into politics, particularly the Ugandan bill for punishment of gays. That is, however, a separate issue. Here he did what all church, synagogue ,and mosque leaders do- he asked for funds.

We did it in post WWII japan when the occupying U.S. Forces forced the Emperor of Japan to admit that he was lying when he claimed to be divine, and ordered all public schools to inform children that there was no evidence to support religious claims. That effectively ended the bullsh-t of religion in Japan. Today, only 4% of Japanese believe in any god despite the constant efforts of Christian and other cult missionaries to destroy Japan's rich culture. Most japanese correctly consider believers to be mentally ill.

The time has come to end religious fraud in the United states and we can do it constitutionally right NOW. Employing existing truth in advertising laws, we must prosecute for criminal fraud all those who raise funds or recruit followers via claims that cannot be substantiated by documented, empirical scientific evidence. We must also require all religious leaders to inform their flocks that there is no rational evidence-based reason to believe their claims about the existence of god or gods, heaven, hell, angels, souls, devils and demons and that the evidence strongly suggests that Abraham, Moses, The Exodus, Jesus and Muhammad never actually existed and the core of all religion is based on empty myth and the invented fantasies and LIES of ignorant, primitive people.

Religious leaders must additionally inform their followers that religion has long been used by the ruling classes to manipulate and control the ignorant masses, and that parasites such as Rick Warren feed on this ignorance, the emotionally needy and delusional people who fear the realities of life and adult responsibility. Public schools must reinforce this message from Kindergarten through High School.

All this can be accomplished under existing law without violating the United States Constitution. Fat chance of getting even one of our gutless elected representatives to start the ball rolling--most of them subscribe to superstitions such as the perverted Middle Eastern delusional belief system known as Christianity.
