House Democrats Push Back On Social Security Privatization Plan
By Nicole Belle Sunday Feb 07, 2010 6:00pmRepresentatives Paul Ryan (R-Wis) and Devin Nunes (R-CA) introduce "A Roadmap to America's Future" which advocates the privatization of Social Security.
Funny thing about Republicans. They seem determined to NEVER learn lessons from the past. Which can be the only reason why Rep. Paul Ryan has reintroduced legislation to eliminate Medicare and privatize Social Security--a GOP pet project that spent all the political capital that Bush felt he earned with his re-election. His "Social Security-palooza" tour, designed to drum up populist support, actually had the opposite affect and set the administration back on its heels and backing off--a rare defeat for the destructive neo-con plans of the Bushies.
Say it with me now: THIRD RAIL. Seriously, you nimrods, you don't go after the well-being of Grandma and Grandpa without some serious negative political ramifications, no matter what the lunatic fringe teabagging set says.
Not content to let Ryan & Co. merely self-immolate on this, Representatives John Larson (D-CT) and Linda Sanchez (D-CA) have introduced a resolution clearly stating their opposition to this "roadmap" guaranteed to get Americans lost:
Today, Democratic Caucus Chair John Larson (D-CT), Rep. Linda Sánchez (D-CA) and more than 20 original co-sponsors introduced a resolution in opposition to the Republican proposal to privatize Social Security. Rep. John Larson:
Republicans are dusting off their old playbook and re-hashing old ideas like the privatization of Social Security that the American people have already rejected. Their ideas would end the program as we know it and put the retirement security of millions of America’s seniors and workers at risk.
Rep. Linda Sánchez:
When the stock market crashed in 2008, it was apparent that the Republican’s push to privatize Social Security was a bad idea. Americans have not forgotten the dangers of tying their retirement security to the whims of Wall Street. It was a bad idea then, and it is a bad idea now. This resolution supports Americans who contribute all their working life to a retirement and want income security in their golden years.

He said just the interest is $200,000,000,000 a year and then says in ten years that will be 1 trillion of more debt. Sheesh!
what he was saying is that the interest now is 200 billion a year, in 10 years it will be 1 trillion a year.
So, will Obama reach across the aisle on this one since the Republican Party has so many good ideas he wishes to seriously consider? Geithner is serious about SS and Medicare reform and I'm sure his banking buddies would be supportive of the idea.
comnments on Susie's post earlier, Geitner never said SS and medicare reform. Get past her headline if you are going to comment.
As if Obama himself hasn't communicated the 'need to reform entitlement programs' a million times.
go back and listen to video and read the damn text.
It's irrelevant. Obama has talked about entitlement "reforms" himself.
taxing those with over $250,000 in income and letting the tax cuts expire are not eradicatting SS and Medicare.
back and makes it's post-election recommendations for cutting Social Security benefits, and they're quickly and quietly adopted, will you say it was a "pragmatic" move or will you just blame the big bad Republicans again?
or if?
Ok, well-- enjoy the rosy view.
keep having the shitty outlook on life, it always helps you to move forward.
You can be realistic and not expect Obama and our Democratic leadership to do the right thing without every single one of us making a huge stink and being on them every time they try to give more free money away to their corporate donors.
Just because we don't expect Obama and his pals to do the right thing doesn't mean we've given up on trying to make them. It's just that they're making it a lot hard then it should be to support our Democratic leadership.
then Obama will dismiss us as 'lefties' and (R)ahm will call us fucking retards.
You didn't answer my question, though-- and it'd be great to have a reference when we get to November and my "shitty outlook" is once again reinforced.
Pragmatic or big, bad Republicans?
You've been babbling so much, it's hard to keep up with what you're saying.
You only have to move your eyes up the page. I know it must be hard to read with those rose colored glasses on, but give it a shot.
doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I have decided to quit responding to you on this subject.
See you in November, Rosey.
.............
Yep.
.........
we are talking about the corporatist DLC agenda, which is all Obama is about.
The question was about those programs and his answer was about bipartisan consensus. So, what's the compromise between what we have and privatization?
Just imagine the amazing mess they've made of health care reform and include SS to it. We'll be forced to pay into 401K's that will be unregulated.
Susie says it's what the clip was about with her headline doesn't mean it's going to happen. Reform wasn't in the clip or the text. I challenged her on her headline earlier and she hasn't responded. Nuff said. That was hours ago.
What was the Greenspan Commission about?
Social Security.
The question from Tapper was about Social Security and "entitlement" programs and Geithners answer was about bringing people together in reference to the bipartisan commissions.
So, he never said "I want to reform Social Security" exactly, but it's pretty well implied by the fact that is what the question was about. Otherwise, what in the heck is he referring to?
I don't know. I had to take the crystal ball in to purge it and clear the memory. It's been crashing on me lately.
OK, so instead of trying to get into Geithner's mind (which is a baffling place I agree) can we at least agree that the current administrations record on reform is less than stellar? I mean, there's not one single major issue they've taken a bold stand on and/or followed through.
The closest is the stimulus. And giving away money is never a hard thing to sell.
They can't even be upfront about starting a war in Pakistan or Iran (both of which we currently have troops in).
he saqid he was going after Al Qaeda and we know they were in Pakistan. Now about troops in Iran, there may be special forces but I don't see an invasion.
So, we just wage war inside a sovereign nation because we want to now?
This is OK?
Escalating Afghanistan, increasing private contractors in Iraq, instigating war in Iran...
Personally, more war is not the type of Change I believe in.
I can't believe people buy into this WWF bullshit. They'll suggest we hand all the money to Goldman Sachs, and Team Obama will reach accross the aisle and compromise on 3/4.
break it and then pass the loss onto the American people in a free market that the SHOCK DOCTRINE proves bankrupts a country! Reform is one thing --usually means cut the fat and streamline the processes but to blatantly hand over another Congressional broken agency to the private sector--CAN ANYONE SAY FANNIE AND FREDDIE1
Seems we have a few trolls on board the site today!
"Funny thing about Republicans. They seem determined to NEVER learn lessons from the past."
What lessons are they not learning whan Geithner is out there saying he and Obama are committed to a bipartisan "fix" of Social Security and Medicare?
Just watch. Obama will hit a new appeasing, sellout low and these GOP assholes know it.
-if they stomp and scream loud enough, and hold their breath, and blame the Dems, the Dems will cave every time.
EVERY time.
these DLC fuckers have the same agenda as repugs, only with less visible contempt.
Keep repeating the same mistakes and expecting a different outcome?
I had my 401K in a balanced portfolio - 1/3 in growth stocks - high potential but risky, 1/3 in blue chips - safe but not high yield, and 1/3 in super safe bonds and securities - the ones that typically go up when the stock market goes down.
So what happened during the crash of 2008? I lost 70% of my value after failure of all 3 categories. THAT is what the banksters and the GOP want me to do with my Social Security contributions.
I know a lot of people who are delaying retirement (Those who haven't lost their jobs) because their non-social security finances suddenly tanked.
What is the definition of insanity?
My house is now worth 25¢ on the dollar and my pension plan is critical.
I want some Banksters to come into my neighborhood. We will have a house warming party with their burning corpses.
I see the Republicans somehow turning this into Obama's idea, which will then ensure his defeat in 2012.
The GOP used to ge able to get away with this kind of thing. It is the broadband age and people are better informed. The internet is killing the GOPhers. (I luv it)
wouldn't be surprised if the spineless dems actually gave in on this one.
balancing the budget by 2080. Those 2 assholes and I won't be alive to see if it would even work. That's about how much sense their plan makes.
Bullshit, lies, obfiscation, wars, and in general stupidity. sense no!
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!
Lets help wallstreet steal the peoples money!
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!
gave the People free grain for bread, wine, and 'circuses' in the various amphitheaters. The Repug's corporate Masters want it ALL, every grain of wheat, every drop of water, every penny. What is wrong with them? How do people become that way?
They are out of their fucking minds and they have persuaded their followers with enough propaganda, lies and bullshit that they are as crazy as their slave masters. They absolutely love being used as idiots and slaves, as long as they get a few catchy slogans, a little fear of terrorists to help keep em in line, and fox news and rightwing radio to help catapult the propaganda to their willfully ignorant followers.
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!
in this state fawns all over Ryan giving him a reach around at every opportunity. Meh Americans deserve it. Fuck em.
Keep pushing this bullshit. With the way the markets work now you might as well put your money into a savings account getting 1% interest. Unless your lucky and pull all your money in a market upswing, you can't get the long term investment returns we use to see in the 70's and 80's. I'm a financial adviser, and I'm leaving the business. With the way our markets work now, my advice, don't invest in the market. You cannot win. Four year upswing and then a massive drop (recession), four year upswing then a massive drop........DO NOT INVEST IN THE MARKET.
I moved it to my local bank before the bush bailout. God I hate these stupid republicans. You can't fix stupid.
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!
As much as I want the Democrats to do away with the filibuster to get something done, as the Republicans showed they don't want anything done, I have a suspicion the Republicans would pass this. And how are vouchers going to lower the cost? It would seem to me that idea would cost more than actually curbing costs. The private sector costs more than Medicare.
Republicans truly believe in smaller government, tax cuts, and, no that's all.
But they always make it bigger. bush made one of the biggest increases in the size of government with the Home land security department. But these brain dead republican voters don't care about that. When a republican says small government what he should say is you are an idiot if you think I want to make government smaller? All he wants to do is make it work in his favor! Fuck you!
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!
I was just over at a Conservative blog that was defending Palin's appearance at the Teabaggger rally and many of them were claiming how Reagan is the one who they wish to use as an example of all things teabagger. They go on about his views on how government is the problem and we need smaller government, less spending, etc...
OK, granted, Reagan "said" all that, but he did exactly the opposite. It's amazing the disconnect between reality and their beliefs. Many of them were going on about Obama's bailout package as well. Not remembering it was Bush who was president when that happened.
Wow is all I can say to the absurdity of it all.
No matter what they believe. Nothing else matters but they believe.
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!
That's the GOP---they belch out only what Republiborg central downloads into their defective memory chips---anything else---you will be assimilated.
Resistance is futile.
To shape the bills that brought on the big long run of growth we had while he was pres. Do you know how many republicans voted for those bills? 0 None! Everything about republicans is a lie, just so much fart gas. These people lie every day about everything. They cannot be trusted to make decisions for others. Damn I wouldn't want to have any of todays republicans any where near my family. They are worse then the terrorists they have been scaring you poor fools with since 911! Jese you guys are either the biggest cowards or the biggest idiots to ever breath.
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!
So instead of Dems trying to score political gotcha points, how about getting off your dead ases and doing something besides standing around bitching about how helpless you are when faced with Repugs.
Bet the 8 grade girls soccer team from the local school could kick the butts of this batch of Dems.
I am sick of pussy Dems!!
it's amazing how the bush administration's, wars, tax cuts, and utter destruction of the surplus handed to them has suddenly managed to become the "democrat's deficit".
first they tried to force us to subsidize the health care insurance industry, under threat of fine, now it's more health care subsidization and they've also added "pension" mutual funds.
i know my 401k's in the dumper...how's your's?
They dress like it's 1950's. They dream like it's 1950's and they legislate like it's 1950's. It's 2010. Health care is going to go public in the next 10 years like it or not. More and more people are ending up on the public system as time goes on. More on Medicare and more on Medicaid. Better make it efficient and affordable.
When insurance companies don't make insurance affordable and when they don't insure the people with pre-existing conditions those people need to have something. One person I talked to told me she wouldn't go on the HSA plans anymore because a fellow employee had a stroke and the insurance company was fighting him on the coverage after the HSA deductible. I asked her why and she told me that's what he's fighting. It makes no sense.
Representatives Paul Ryan (R-Wis) and Devin Nunes (R-CA) introduce "A Roadmap to
America's Future"A Train Wreck" which advocates the privatization of Social Security. There boys, fixed it for you.
http://dir.salon.com/story/tech/feature/2003/...
they dont have enough gray hairs to be talking about social security.
The Greed party can say or do anything , their supporters being so stupid that it doesn't matter .
When they privatize Social Security and cut Medicare, where will the not so rich old people go during the next recession?
Never mind. Right wing Opposite World propaganda tanks have already figured it out. (They invent policy as well as talking points, you know. Sometimes, the two overlap.)
So naturally, we'll all go to FEMA Camps to meet with Death Panels.
I don't know why the democrats don't laugh at these assholes and say, "there wouldn't even be a private sector if it wasn't for the government! Wall Street would be a ghost town!" And you want grandma to be at their criminal mercies?
The question which fans of Social Security privatization never seem to have a reasonable answer for is...if we did privatized Social Security, what do they think we should do for seniors in the event of a serious market crash? Or for people who may have been gullible enough to trust someone like Bernie Madoff with their money? What would they recommend we do in such a scenario?
(Oh, wait...don't tell me! Of course...how could I have forgotten so quickly? This is the moment at which we'd conveniently chastise them for failing to take personal responsibility, either because they didn't choose the right financial adviser or because they didn't bother to put aside enough money in the course of their lives -- despite the knowledge that this is far from being a perfect world and that not everyone is gifted with exactly the resources or the same opportunities.)
So what ought we do for these people, hmmmmm? Turn a cold shoulder and a blind eye when they get turned out into the streets? Shrug our shoulders and say "it sucks to be you?" Tell them to throw themselves on the mercy of charity organizations such as food banks, some of which have been having difficulty already meeting community needs in the aftermath of the 2008 market crash?
http://downwithtyranny.blogspot.com/2010/01/w...
Give it a few decades until the kids who have been brainwashed in school since the Reagan Revolution start to retire. They'll understand that they deserve to die if they're losers and won't complain about privatization.
Speaking of political capital, I'll bet the Republicans think they have political capital without winning an election. They think they can do things like this because Obama is getting more unpopular over time. Also, the more right-wing they appear, the more left-wing Obama and the Democrats appear - even though Obama et.al. are mostly centrist.
It looks like Ryan's got a Ronald Reagan thing going on with his hair. Probably thinks of himself as the next Ronnie.
How come they didn't have a plan (or a clue) during the first 6 years of the bush admin when they were in complete and total control of the government? How come they doubled the national debt from $5 trillion to 10 trillion? How come they grew the government at an average rate of 6% a year???
US senators & US congressmen need to pay for their own health insurance & life insurance. After they have begun to take some responsibility for themselves they might begin to realize who bad it in out here & who they work for.
I paid SS all my life. Can I take it to France with me?
This is a special-interest bill for the GOP. No money will be refunded from SS, but the Rethugs will channel the remaining funds into their own districts/pockets.
The most recent stock market dive will mandate that seniors, and possibly Tea Baggers as well, finally understand that the GOP is not, and never will be, responsive to them.
Perhaps the only good news in all this is that Glenn Beck has been bashing Social Security, a move that should cost him many formerly loyal viewers.
