Jimmy Carter Loses His Religion

From "Jimmy Carter: Man From Plains" (2007)

The Man From Plains makes a startling announcement:

Women and girls have been discriminated against for too long in a twisted interpretation of the word of God.

I HAVE been a practising Christian all my life and a deacon and Bible teacher for many years. My faith is a source of strength and comfort to me, as religious beliefs are to hundreds of millions of people around the world. So my decision to sever my ties with the Southern Baptist Convention, after six decades, was painful and difficult. It was, however, an unavoidable decision when the convention's leaders, quoting a few carefully selected Bible verses and claiming that Eve was created second to Adam and was responsible for original sin, ordained that women must be "subservient" to their husbands and prohibited from serving as deacons, pastors or chaplains in the military service.

This view that women are somehow inferior to men is not restricted to one religion or belief. Women are prevented from playing a full and equal role in many faiths. Nor, tragically, does its influence stop at the walls of the church, mosque, synagogue or temple. This discrimination, unjustifiably attributed to a Higher Authority, has provided a reason or excuse for the deprivation of women's equal rights across the world for centuries.

At its most repugnant, the belief that women must be subjugated to the wishes of men excuses slavery, violence, forced prostitution, genital mutilation and national laws that omit rape as a crime. But it also costs many millions of girls and women control over their own bodies and lives, and continues to deny them fair access to education, health, employment and influence within their own communities.

Read on...

You know, Jimmy Carter gets such an unfair rap in this country over his presidency, but this is my definition of a brave human being--taking a stand over what is right and moral not for any political calculation, but because it's right and moral.

I only wish more people would look in their heart and make the same kind of stand--one that champions equality and harmony instead of divisiveness and oppression.

Bravo, sir. Bravo.

I really admire Jimmy Carter. He is a very good man.

Yes

I was just going to say the same thing. What a humble, smart man he is.

I met him a few years ago at a Borders' book signing in Chicago. He signed my book, as he was talking to the lady in front of me.

I started to move on, after he signed my book, because he was still talking....but he said, "hold on a minute," and he shook my hand. I told him what good work he was doing, and he said "thank you."

Lucky you! I would love to meet him.

Yes, Calgarylady, it was quite an honor to shake his hand! I also visited his Presidential library in Atlanta several years ago when visiting a friend. Very interesting place.

We need more people in the world like him.

Yep

We sure do.

How sad that President Carter was the only recent president in history to leave office with his honor entacted. I always like him. I feel history will do him justice. Alot of things came true, especially about oil. I don't think anyone is laughing now.

Here's the man that the Republicks started to develop their skills at demolishing democrats through their ownership of the media.

Their next victum was Bill Clinton. They are just getting started on Pres. Obama. We haven't seen anything yet.

Nothing will ever stop the GOP Crime Machine. Fed by greed and money.

We are all screwed.

CMG

Continuing the, Myth of the Great Communicator.

It is time that the Democrats remove Knock-Kneed Reid and Pansy Nancy ... and start chipping away at "the Great Reagan" and promoting Democratic values again.

Republicans: "The Drunk Uncle"
Republicans are the "Tax Cut and Spenders" who steal from their children and grandchildren to line the pockets their rich buddies.

Democrats: "The Caring Aunt"
Always go in and have to fix the Tax-Cut and Spending destruction and theft... and get blamed for being responsible!

For instance, debt. Reagan, Bush and Bush are responsible for borrowing more than 60% of the total 2001 Debt ($10.8 trillion) (debt created by the County's first 233 years). They also left the US with a broken economic system, and a crumbling infrastructure ...

Ask yourself, what did we GET for more than $6 trillion?

Want More? ...

Increased Government - Let's see:

LBJ - 35.8% (1 - term+) <--- OUCH!
Nixon/Ford - 25.4% (2 terms)
Carter - 17.2% (1 term)
Reagan - 22.9 % (2 terms)
Bush - 7.8% (1 term)
Clinton - 12.3% (2 terms) < -- Nearly HALF Reagan!
Bush - 55% (2 terms) < --- Nearly 5 times Clinton!

Taxes:
Reagan had the greatest tax increase (in terms of GDP or inflation adjusted) with the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982. Clinton was second. But more importantly, Clinton's large tax increase in '93 was followed by the greatest economic boom; Reagan's huge tax cut in 1982 forced him to sign the largest tax increase IN 1983! - and economic recovery.

Inflation - Nixon/Ford
- Remember Ford and W.I.N.? Carter was crippled by Stagflation. And Carter's Fed pick - Voelker "whipped inflation" in time for Reagan's economic recovery.

at an alarming rate

if we solve the problem backwards.

Carter was a threat to the republicanzi so they were like vicious animals twards him. Today he can wear that as a badge of honor!

is my hero.
He was my hero for his work with habitat for humanity but now... man....

He is just about on the same footing with my dad. I write this because my dad expected as much from me as my brothers. He treated me as an equal. You can't do much better than that.

Like you said, say what you want about his Presidency but you can't touch the mans faith. He completely refuted his Evangelical leadership. Good for him. Evangelicals are nothing more than a Newt political movement.

is a class act.

If everyone tried to be more like him, this world would be a much better place.

southern baptists are hateful bigots? Shocking!

I have always respected liberal Christians who walk the walk of true Christianity instead of hiding behind it with hypocritical self-righteousness. If there is such a thing as anti-Christianity, it is conservative Christianity.

Ya!

I like it.

is and always will be my hero. A better man has yet to surface in this country in my 66 years. He is a penpal of my grandson having met on the ski slopes of Utah. The Carters would completely out 150 or so needy children with all the skiing equipment they needed and then take them up to Park City for weekend of fun. My grandson just happened to be on the hills and became freindly with Amy and the brood she was herding around. Andrew, my grandson who was 6 or 7 at the time, has a wonderful keepsake, a picture of him sitting on the President's lap.

about a kind, dignified, and gracious man... he's one of the few I'd refer to as a gentleman. Thanks for sharing how he personally touches your life. Mr. Carter, we sure as hell need you now!

Jimmy Carter!!
I'm sure it must have been a heart wrenching decision for him...the church having been such a large part of his life for so long.

What a decent & brave man.

In telling these authoritarian, hypocritical phonies goodbye. Their perversion of spirituality is a cruel hoax and best you not be associated with such toxic garbage. I'm grateful you always took the high road no matter what the risk was.

Took him 85 years to question the underpinnings of society. Not exactly a Voltaire, much less a Chomsky. But, yes. It is always admirable to be a life long learner, so he's a role model for us all.

This isn't a matter of JC (you gotta love those initials) having some sort of epiphany on women's issues and the culture of misogyny and oppression. He's always been pro-feminist. This is about him losing hope that the Southern Baptist Convention (which was taken over by right wing zealots in 1979 and has been, among other things, becoming steadily more discriminatory and oppressive to women ever since) would right its course and return to its traditions of broad mindedness and respect. Moderate and liberal Baptist congregations (and individuals) strove mightily in the years following the takeover to moderate the influence of the crazies, but have increasingly, in the past 15 to 20 years, begun to simply give up and leave the SBC and affiliate with other Baptist Conventions. Unfortunately, the more moderates and liberals leave the SBC, the SBC gets ever crazier in their proclamations and edicts.

Insanity and intolerance are on the rise. Where's the wielder of the Witchblade when you need her?

came to a close as Ronald Reagan committed TREASON by negotiating with a foreign power in secret in order to undermine Carter's influence with Iran.

Jimmy Carter = GRACE and A GOOD HEART
Ronald Reagan = SNAKE IN THE GRASS

Ronald Reagan committed TREASON by negotiating with a foreign power in secret in order to undermine Carter's influence with Iran

did that become the Iran contra affair? Or is this something else?

one of the reasons that Ronnie Raygun chose fucknuts' daddy, aka bush 41, was that as former CIA director, needle nose had connections which allowed him back door negotiation channels with the Iranians to delay the release of the hostages until after the senile dimwit was sworn in. Wasn't it an amazing coincidence that the hostages were freed as Reagan was taking the oath of office? Right.

I think the CIA owned Reagan.

Like maybe he did some porno early in his film career - or something.

He WAS a Democrat and a Union Leader.

Then he became a Republican and a Union Buster.

180 degree change.

hmmm ..

GE shill and cigarette salesman...

Kinda makes one wonder, doesn't it?

I think it was the Bush Crime Family.....#:)

to turn on his fellow Hollywood workers; he was the first to stand up and testify for the House Unamerican Activities Commitee, turning on people and declaring them to be Communists, getting people blackballed, ruining lives.

That's how he got his start in politics; being a stool pigeon for Joe McCarthy's Communist Witch-hunt.

He spent his presidency funding terrorists around the world.

The right want him on Mt Rushmore.

. . . only I thought of Reagan's image being carved into Bandini Mountain - a metaphor for what his legend and reputation are truly made of, with an olfactory reminder of his most ardent followers.

And then, shamelessly named one ofter Bush Senior.

That bastard's face shouldn't be carved on anything but urinal cakes.

since it and the land were stolen from the Native Americans. After the U.S. made a treaty w/them agreeing they could keep it, when gold was found in the Black Hills, they went back on their word. Surprise surprise. Official American corruption goes way back, even farther than this. Reagan's a fine example of same.

and flipped him politically. It was Nancy. Her mom was buddies with Barry Goldwater, among other things. Ol' Nancy was always kind of the Dragon Lady behind the throne, and her influence grew exponentially as the Alzheimer's began to take hold of his always somewhat feeble mind in early to mid-presidency.

At the end of the Michael Moore clip (on the other thread) there's a nice rundown of US meddling in other countries, accompanied by the song "What a Wonderful World".

The corruption and criminality of Raygun, the Bush duo and Cheney is astonishing.

Just what I was about to say. Carter was not only a great president but also a great person and remained one after his presidency. Instead of making speeches to fill the old coffers ( bush )he built houses for the needy. If bush and casey had not made a deal with the Iranians to hold the hostages he would have been re-elected.

Jimmy Carter is an Evangelical Christian who is ALSO a Sermon On The Mount Christian.

They DO exist.

been a cancer on human civilization since the first snake oil salesman climbed down off of a mountain claiming to channel the omnipotent, invisible, cloud dweller with anger management issues.

arrive?

that great religious philosopher Archie Bunker, "Faith is something you have that nobody in his right mind would believe."

Faith is something you know (feel within) not something one beLIEves.

Basically, it can't really be explained.

those "feelings" have caused more hatred, death, destruction, genocide, and environmental damage than all other feelings combined.

Yet

Yet, somehow pot is evil??

"Faith is something you know (feel within).."

Faith does not come from within. People who are not preached to would have no concept of God, and if it came from within would there not be a distribution of belief worldwide? Or just one universal faith everywhere?

Instead we have what we see, the Hindus dominant in one part of the world, the Christians in another, the Muslims in another, and so on. No, "faith" is something that is imposed upon one by local tribal culture.

you're absolutely right. but of coarse after many years of thinking they know something, it can also become a feeling after the fact.

Then where did the idea of God come from, I wonder, if nobody would ever think of it without hearing it from someone else? SOMEBODY must have had the concept.

Try harder next time.

Well, it's not really true that people who aren't preached to have no concept of god (i.e., a concept of some spirit or forces working behind the scenes). Folks in pre-state cultures had a sense of god, though they tended not to be monotheistic about it and it might not be something so completely separate from the everyday. Really too much to go into here, but read some anthropology texts. It's with the rise of the state that you get a priesthood often aligned with the ruling class (and often working to keep that class in power by using god to keep the masses in check). But, if you do any study of pre-state cultures, you learn that the concept of god predates that.

faith is believing what you know ain't so

"Faith in a holy cause is, to a considerable extent, a substitute for lost faith in ourselves." (Eric Hoffer)

I don't have a problem with religion or spirtuality, it's the selfish assholes that pervert religion.

A great book on the subject is called "A History of God". It details where the concept came from and how it has evolved, with a focus on Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The idea of a god seems to be a universal human concept.

There's a great lecture on why some people believe in gods. It has to do with psychology and culture.

http://richarddawkins.net/article,3779,Why-We...

There's nothing mysterious or complicated. Humans attribute intent and motivation to unseen forces. We do this because in our ancient past it was a good survival trait to have. For example, that sound coming from the bush might just be the wind, or maybe it's a lion on the prowl. Assume it's a lion when it's really the wind and all you might lose is a little pride. However, assume that the lion is just the wind and you might end up being lunch.

Compare him to the lazy dim bulbs (Bush 43), empty suits (Reagan) and straight out crooks (Nixon) and one can clearly see Carter was not a Republican in any shape form or fashion.

He was a Democrat. Why would anyone think he was a Republican??

As an atheist, my hat is off to the man for standing up to these nutjobs.

I was a kid when he was president and don't remember much of his term. His post-presidency is how I've come to admire him.

I was 11 in '76, and Carter's evangelism was part of the reason my mom- who has voted Democratic in every other election in which she's participated- voted for Ford. She was afraid that Carter wouldn't support the ERA and Roe v. Wade, and since we live in Jerry Ford's district, she knew that Ford would support those things.

She always says she's been very glad, since Carter took office, that Ford didn't win. And, of course, she voted for Carter in '80.

I, too, am an athiest. (Actually, an anti-theist.) I have always greatly admired Jimmy Carter for his selfless devotion to humanistic values -- a trait that all too often has been wanting in those who call themselves Christians. In fact, it is surprising to me that Carter has remained with the SBC this long.

can not be restored once it's lost.

Carters is still intact.

Carter is one of my favourite presidents. I don't care about the politics of it (not American), I care that he is a fine and intelligent man. You'd be lucky to have another like him.

Jimmy Carter is a great man. He is a person to look up to. I liked him when he was president; he had the same honesty then as he has now. Thank you, Jimmy Carter for standing up for what is right and helping humanity in every way that you can.

A great and beautiful human being. Mr. Carter is a shining example of what an American representative to the world should be.

Wow

"You know, Jimmy Carter gets such an unfair rap in this country over his presidency.."

You totally lost me there. I thought Chris Matthews was the only person who thought that.

Honestly, if you think so, I'm not all that heartbroken over having lost you.

Carter did some really progressive things, that had they been continued by Reagan/Bush (mileage standards, negotiating in the Middle East, etc.) would find us in a much better place today.

Carter gets blamed for the Iranian hostages and the gas shortage, neither one very fair to blame on his presidency. I don't think it's unfair to say he's gotten a bad rap.

And I'd line up his post-presidency work with any other president and he comes out shining on top.

Yep

Carter gets blamed for the Iranian hostages

It's especially unfair when you take into account how much effort behind-the-scenes right-wing influence had in bringing that about.

He was a good EX president, but in office he was horrible. I understand people who get nostalgic about past presidents, Bush is already gaining back some of his approval. The best thing that came out of that whole ordeal was Billy Beer.

Does that surprise you? Really?

Not all Christians have such a twisted view.

In the Bible Gods refers to women being "the helper". Only two other people in the Bible are referred to in this way - God and Jesus.

Carter left the Southern Baptist Church, not Christianity altogether.

That little word causes a lot of heartbreak and strife right there. There's the intrepretation you're alluding to, then there's ones the harder complementarians use, helpmeet/helpmate, and I think we where they head with that one, that women are lower down the pecking order, hence the painful curtailing of women's vitality....

that voted for Carter. Can you believe that? Jimmy Carter is the best example of a Christian that I can find in public life. I am in awe of his compassion. His work as a humanitarian and Christian will exalt him higher than any of those do gooders in the GOP that pretend to be Christian.

essentially left the SBC over "complementarianism."

I hope more Evangelical men take a long hard look at the real costs of complementarianism, and do what they need to do.

From what I have read in the religion and gender issues blogosphere, the SBC is getting to be more hardline in their complementarianism (if you can imagine that). They were bad enough already, but there are efforts to shut up clergy who are egalitarian in their beliefs about women in the church, family, and society at large.

Allaleigh and a couple of other people here recognized Carter's specific reference to the Southern Baptist Convention.

The SBC was the target of a hostile takeover in 1979. You can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Baptist...

I recently talked to an old friend of mine whose father, a Baptist preacher, was present at this event. It was one of those deals where people were being forcibly moved away from the microphones by Repugnikan thugs.

Wonder why it took Carter and people like him so long, though. Here's something that I wrote several years ago, when I was unaware of the facts mentioned above: http://broughton.ca/bob-broughtons-blog-mainm...

i'm not sure if the article is sarcastic or not... it doesn't take a brave person to denounce sexism... it would have been far more impressive if he was using that tone to defend gay marriage.

now. It was important for Carter to do this, and really I think that if he hadn't removed himself, they would have booted him for saying the SBC's practices are wrong.

So, defending gay people is brave and amazing, but defending women is trivial and boring? Wow. What an enlightened and egalitarian stance.

Your mama must be DAMN proud of you!

Thats not what I said at all... read more carefully. Is your moma proud of you being so easily offended? Its a GOOD thing that gender equality is so universally accepted. Its EASY to support. Whats harder, is for the religious to come out and denounce their religions inequality towards gays. That is far more unheard of and far more noteworthy. What carter did was certainly necessary, but he is no saint for saying what almost anyone could have said.

IMO carter actually had very little to say regarding sexism other than as illustration. the thrust of what he said goes far deeper than merely how half the population treats the other half. it goes right to the justification of ALL discrimination, AS IF a Higher Authority sanctioned that type of behavior. He is saying that using god to justify any discrimination, especially against 50% of all of us, (work with him here) is NOT acceptable.

maybe if gays comprised 50% of the worlds population jimmy might write an article about that discrimination too.

Think what NOT having an unprovable, and therefor unassailable, rationale be the basis of foulness against others might actually mean to this world.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton very proud.

Let us always remember the mighty fine work that he and Rosalynn did after leaving the White House - such as observing elections in other countries.

Yes the man knows the important priorities.

Leaving his religion "because it's right and moral". LOL now thats funny.

Yes

Considering how bigoted and ugly so many churches are, it's often the right and moral thing to do.

an interview with a pastor who was pushed into quitting his missionary board positions because he blogged *against* the SBC's position on the subordinating of women.

http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2008/febr...

Let's get something straight, Jimmy Carter did not lose his religon. He left the SBC over women's rights issues. He did not stop believing in God. Leadership in religious institutions are not always right, and conscientious people like Carter must make their own decisions on how to deal with situations like this. It is to his credit that Jimmy Carter has come out and discuss this in an forthright and open manner. I totally respect him for his couragous stand.

thanks for the clearification.

He only "lost his religion" if we take the SBC to be the whole of Christianity. THEY may think that, but it's certainly not true at all. He's still just as much as Christian as he ever was. He's just shaken off his association with a bunch of hypocrites. Good for him!

I'm sure you're correct, even though it was his own title of the article. But, as an athiest who basically sees Christianity as a scourge in practice, I think it would be a great boon to humanity if Carter embraced athiesm. That, of course, would take the ultimate act of courage.

My first Presidential election was '76. I recall the howls of pain on the left (well, that's what it sounded like), where people were having a hard time handling a "born again" as the candidate. But the right wasn't entirely silent either, they worked hard to derail the campaign, and later his Presidency, any chance they got (sometimes with help from parts of the majority party). Carter had his faults, made his mistakes. Letting the Shah into the country just as Iran was in full revolution mode, for example. But in many areas that really counted, like energy security, he really did have us going in the right direction. Carter's religion turned out to be more humble and gracious than many expected or hoped. As for the SBC, while most people wrote them off when they first began their descent from a kind of conservative theology into petty conservative politics (which for the leadership just happens to pay $$$ better than theology), I know that many on the inside kept hoping things would change. Looks like Carter was one of them. I think the fact that he stuck it out as long as he did, even after it ceased to provide any political advantage, is more evidence he was sincere all along.

He was too decent a person to be President. There's a thread of ruthlessness required in any man who wants that position, even the best ones. Carter just never had it. No complaints here - I think he can do more good now.

It's good to see him still taking a stand about things that matter.

Carter was a huge success.

There's that, too.

but I dont think he's all that brave. especially on this subject.

I remember once watching him on Larry King. It was total enlightenment all up until Larry asked him about abortion. Jimmy then replied with what could only be described as parochial, religious school boy nonsense.... replying "I dont just dont think Jesus would be for abortions"

In the catholic church women are totally treated as second class. And this is not new......

disappointing that he didn't reflect on what the religions of the world do to gay people.

I too was moved by this post. There is no doubt that Jimmy Carter is a good man.

But to my point and I don't understand the details.

Didn't he broker a peace deal between Israel and Egypt that has stood for 30 years?

And was one of the greatest accomplishments towards peace in the middle east in our lifetimes.

Peace and good health to you President Carter. Thank you for your service to our country,

has to be one of the finest men on the planet. Agenuine hero who held public office not for his gain but for the good of the people he served. I do believe he was the last public official that truly believed that he worked for the people and not the other way around.

His work with Habitat for Humanity exemplified his true nature and what public service is all about. I applaud him and I do believe that Ronald Reagan started the true meanness that now permeates the republican party. Remember the Iranian hostages? Remember how the gipper cut a deal with Iran to release the hostages?

Jimmy Carter displayed his courage during the Three Mile Island incident when he toured the power plant while knowing that it could catastrophically blow apart and wipe out a good portion of the east coast. Would either bush or reagan have the guts?

This man should be a prime example for the youth of today. Not Michael Jackson.

Jimmy was honest enough to say that he lusted in his heart. Which one of us hasn't lusted in our hearts? He sure didn't lust all over the front page with anyone who would accept a wide stance or happen to live in South America and have the taxpayers foot the bill. You can find no one in politics today that can hold a candle to this man's integrity.

whom I don't think is defined by the office he held. The man remains far more than what is commonly referred to as "the most powerful man in the free world."

I think it's fair to say that GWB's post-presidency will come nowhere close to Carter's.

how you attribute that to a bravery issue.

Carter is simply stating a commonly held belief about abortions amongst liberal practicing Christians.

Look. Jesus isn't for abortions. Yet, outlawing abortions is bad LAW.

Frankly, I hate having to explain this abortion position to people.
It's not like it's uncommon.

was asked to login and the reply chain reset...

I'm proud to say that I voted for this man twice.

He is perhaps my best living personal hero - and I'm an atheist.

This is a man who does understand what is truly important - and may his god bless him for it.
*

Why do you say you're an athiest and then say "may god bless him for it?" Either you believe in god or you don't.

Jimmy Carter does what he thinks is right because he thinks it's right - period. And for it, he's been both loved and despised...it seems more often the latter. I can only hope that I am one day as secure in myself and my beliefs to be as fearless as he.

as a political power...brave jimmy sat back and said nothing

hey jimmy...keep building houses...its the only thing you do well

He had plenty to say. You might want to check out a couple of his books from the library. Or you could take a look at this article published in 2004.

www.yuricareport.com/JimmyCarterChristianRight....

You think he cares what the likes of a Falwell or any other Fundie thinks of him?

)O(

What could he have done, crucify them?

If only half our politicians had half the integrity of Jimmy Carter, this would be a much better country. He is a smart, compassionate man who I admire greatly.

... to Jimmy Carter. But he only went half way. Religion and god is the root to the WORST evil. Tens of thousands of people have been killed, murdered and tortured in the name of religion... and it is STILL happening today and will continue.

Good people do good thing, bad people do bad things, religion makes good people do bad things... the subjugation of women is only the tip of the iceberg.

why is it making the rounds now?

He got a bum rap from Republicans and its stuck all these years. Had he served a second term, we'd be an entirely different nation for sure. One that might be in better shape today since we wouldn't have had Reagan reversing the Inflation Busting measures taken by Carter and his administration.

and don't let anyone tell you any differently. You just have to watch one movie on Carter and you will come away with a whole different perspective. Go rent: Man From Plains

http://www.sonyclassics.com/jimmycartermanfro...

He mostly gets blamed for the Iran hostages, but that is BS. There was not much he could have done there.

He also get blamed for the economy, but there were a lot of things going on, including a big oil crisis, that he had no control over. There is a building body of research that Carter made some of the hard economic choices that set up the economic boom of the 80s, which ultimately benefited Reagan.

first ISRAELI aparteid and now MISOGYNIST religiion! Eventually, Carter approaches reality and embraces it. Calling out two discriminatory and predatory organizations in one lifetime - BRAVO!!

Next to Teddy Roosevelt setting up the national park system, Carter is one of my personal favorites as a president.

He's a true humanitarian. We need more like him.

Bravo, indeed.

1) If these people really think women should be subservient to men, then why do they have such a jones for Sarah Palin?

2) Carter: "...[Q]uoting a few carefully selected Bible verses and claiming that Eve was created second to Adam and was responsible for original sin..."

Well, actually, the Bible is notoriously male-dominated. I mean, where are all the grrl patriarchs? And remember how rude Jesus was to his old lady? I think it's Carter who's carefully selecting his data. He should just admit that the Bible is not a good source of data for figuring out what's what and courageously reject the lies of religion now that he's just about this close to kicking off.

Maybe they secretly really like Todd Palin. It's a great tactic where the woman gets beat up in public but the man gets to run the show, just like any typical republican marriage.

I remember reports early on, after McCain picked Palin, that Todd actually did run the show when she was mayor and governor. I wouldn't doubt it....she's such a moron.

She's so cute when she tries to talk politics.

FWIW, if you Google "Jimmy Carter quits Baptist Church" there are reports of this all the way back to 2000.

Carter’s biggest flaw and the reason he failed as a politician was that he really was as honest as he appeared. A little more dishonesty on his part and he would have defeated ST. Ronnie of Raygun the republicant god. But he was just too ernest for his own good.

that Jimmy Carter was too good a man to be president. He is someone I truly admire, a principled man. I had the honour of working on Habitat for Humanity projects when I was active in my college's Catholic Church. I really wish there were more like him.

In my opinion, Jimmy Carter always got a bad wrap regarding his Presidency. Here he discusses severing his ties with the Southern Baptist Convention due to the massive inequalities he observes the fairer of the sex is forced to face. Slavery is everywhere kids. Twisted biblical interpretation by cowardly leaders and flawed false prophets persist to create this environment.

(duplicate message cleared)

A rare correct position for a man who is almost always wrong. Carter's only real claim to fame is that, until the second Bush, he was universally acknowledged to be the single worst President in history and the man who did more damage to the world and the US than any other President. That title now belongs to Bush, but Carter is always attempting to do damage to the world in the hope that he can retain the worst President title.

Carter was by NO MEANS close to the worst. You have Taylor, Hoover, Nixon, WH Harrison, Grant, Tyler, Fillmore, Pierce, A Johnson, Harding, Buchanan and Reagan.
Carter does not make SCHOLARLY top Ten lists for the worst. And the antebellum ones who made the list were slave cheerleaders, which is why I included the union busting, social program slashing asshole that Reagan was. His attempts at destroying the safety nets created to help our neighbours friends and families enslaved generations in the poverty cycle. He is currently ranked 10th from the top, but as conventional wisdom changes about how we treat those less fortunate among us, his avarice will be seen for what it truly was.

I know, that St Ronnie Koolaid is wasted on me, but really, no one did more damage to the welfare of the poor that that sack of shit. And how a society treats its neediest, that's how history judges that society. I'm sure our examples will put us right up there with Caligula, Mussolini, even the dreaded third reich...And you won't find a whiff of Carter around that shit...

Carter did OK for someone whose first sexual experiences were with barnyard animals.

of shit around St. Ronnie tho...
my dog Chip channeled my long and unwavering loathing for St. Ronnie and his voraciously greedy and exploitative cohort and their foul and bitter legacies by symbolically doing to the memory of St Ronnie, in his birthplace, what has been done in his name to the non-have-mores for so unrelentingly, singlemindedly, simplemindedly long... and i had a camera

Former President Carter is a real Christian and a truly good human being.

Yeah, it's good Jimmy Carter severed his ties with the Southern Babtist Church of the Ku Klux Klan...Afterall, everyone knows the very first "minister" of the Christian church, is Mary Magdalene. When all the men we're running around, hiding from their relationship to Yeshua di Nazri (Jesus of Nazareth) Magdalene was going around telling folks "He is alive"....Now, that's the first minister. So, women shouldn't have to adhere to the "old law"...Women can definetly be Ministers, due to Magdalene alone.
Hey...where's Carters voice on the health care issue? That's where we need him....
