NY Post Cartoon Depicts Shooting The Obama Ape?

Cartoonist Sean Delonas of the Murdoch-owned NY Post is under fire for a cartoon published today depicting two police officers shooting a chimpanzee. According to Think Progress, the incident was inspired by a pet chimp attacking a woman in Connecticut.
But Delonas' caption reads, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.", tying the chimp to Obama's recent signing of the Economic Recovery Bill.
The Rev. Al Sharpton says a New York Post cartoon that appears to link President Obama to a violent chimpanzee is "troubling at best."
The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows a dead chimp and two police officers, one with a smoking gun.
The caption reads, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."[..]
Sharpton called the cartoon offensive and divisive.
The Post had no immediate comment.
UPDATE: NY Times:
A newsroom employee at The Post, who spoke on condition of anonymity because employees were not permitted to comment on the matter, said its newsroom received many calls of complaints on Wednesday morning after the publication of the cartoon. “Every line was lit up for several hours,” the employee said. “The phones on the city desk have never rung like that before.” Many Post staff members were dismayed by the cartoon, the employee added.

You really project such joie de vivre
Besides the obvious racism I see a cartoonist that was dumber than box of rocks. How many licks does it take to get to the center of stupidity? The world does not want to know.
Goodnight, Frau Blücher
First Lick: it's an allusion to the million monkeys writing Shakespeare. If you see an association to Obama, that's YOUR problem.
Second Lick: Obama never wrote the bill. Obama never wrote any bill.
So how may licks does it take to get to the center of stupidity??
Two.
Thank you for typing that post. The stupid, it hurts!!
Rothbard > Rothschild
if you missed the blatant obviousness of the cartoon. You don't go anywhere near using any kind of primate reference with black people, period.
You either have to be born under a rock to not know that or in a state that lives under a rock. A smart person would not have gone near the reference with a 10 foot pole. Thanks for devolving the forum.
Goodnight, Frau Blücher
I always see black people reading The Post on the subway. Obviously, it's because the Post is a cheap newspaper, compared to the Times. But I would hope this might get African American and Caribbean Americans to stop buying that putrid rag.
Murdoch is a racist, but you know what - if racism didn't sell, he wouldn't be a billionaire.
I hate Newscorp....they can go to hell for all I care.
However,
This is in reference to the baboon that attacked that one lady and had to be shot the other day.
They are just saying the the Stim was written by a monkey, which doesn't have much to do with Obama, since he didn't write the stim.
So you've never seen or heard of racists comparing African Americans to monkeys huh? I have another question for you: How's the weather on Mars today since you obviously don't live on Earth?
Generally speaking I don't trust anyone making over 150K a year.
A little old lady refused to sit next to a black man on bus. Her excuse was that he looked like a monkey. After a brief argument between the man, the bus diver, and the little old lady; the old hag was thrown off the bus by the bus driver. I think that black-monkey man thing dates back to the 1950s. Well before my time.
No, I have heard of that....Infact I punched a guy for calling my Haitian friend a c**n.
Now, I wouldn't have done something like that because I wouldn't want people to get the wrong idea
However, I don't think they were trying to draw a comparison between Obama and Apes, even though others have.
And If you read the news, you will realize that a member of congress wrote the stim, not Obama.
So, lets all calm down.
That says so much, he is your Haitian friend. How about your friend?
Goodnight, Frau Blücher
Wow - just wow. I pity you. You are one sad, pathetic little man.
Unbelievable.
Before enlightenment - chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment - chop wood, carry water.
does not give you a free pass.
This is President Obama's bill. He is the one who pushed it thru congress. This clearly refers to him as a monkey.
This is the worst kind of satire, though on par for a rethug.
Jeez-o-pete, Obama didn't push this through Congress, he didn't need to raise one finger.
This isnt' a real stimulus bill, it's payback for Democratic votes, and a down payment for future Democratic votes.
You make more reference to Obama as being a monkey, than anyone that Gets the gist of the cartoon.
Obama didn't write the bill. Obama never wrote a bill.
It's about the million-monkeys not the million-man-march.
Was it a chimp or a monkey?
We're not the same.
Apes are vile nasty creatures.
Monkeys are cute and loveable.
"When are we going to stop trying to tell elected officials what to do. Our job is to spend the taxpayers' money the best way we can." -- Tommy Watkins, Justice of the Peace, Crawford County, Arkansas
Either one will rip your eyeballs out if you piss tehm off.
Hmm, police, dogs, black folks. Nope, no connection there.
Also, Obama could easily be seen as the one who "wrote" or authored the stimulus bill. It was his idea, and he gave the Congress the ideas and elements that he wanted in the bill. Tax cuts. Check. Infrastructure spending. Check. Renewable energy spending. Check. Education and other long-term job creation spending. Check. The House and Senate then ironed out the exact details and mix of these elements. It's normal for a President whose party controls the House and/or the Senate to "author," "write," "germinate," "pass down," or otherwise cause to have his party leaders in the House draft up what is essentially "his" bill, and I think that is what happened here.
So what you're saying is it was a million monkeys not just one?
Hah! Get real, he didn't "author" the bill. The ideas he has aren't stimulative, but they are part of the Democratic Playbook. He didn't create that playbook, he is a puppet that represents the playbook to 53 million gullible lemmings.
Obama is a news-reader, not a news maker.
that had side by side pictures of Bush and chimps with nearly identical facial expressions.

Comparing politicians to monkeys is a pretty time honored tradition.
Maybe the cartoonist doesn't realize that the rules of the game have changed
that compare Bush to a monkey.

Bush isn't a black man.
Calling Bush a monkey isn't the same as calling Obama one and you FUCKING KNOW IT!
Obama didn't write the bill.
Obama didn't write the bill.
Obama didn't write the bill...
I am simply outraged by this - it is unbelievably racist, ignorant and seems completely designed to incite hate, distrust and fear.
It's unconscionable.
*
When I first read the story on TP this morning, my first inclination was to give the cartoonist the benefit of the doubt. We've all said/done stupid, unthinking things that someone else takes in a way we never meant. I felt it was possible the cartoonist heard about the "out of control monkey" story and simply made a comparison to another hot topic w/o thinking of how others might interpret it.
Then I realized that nothing gets published that isn't approved by an Editor first. I can accept that MAYBE the cartoonist didn't see the connection, but the Editor more likely DID and printed it anyway.
OR, the cartoonist DID know but it slipped past an innocent Editor.
But no way can you convince me BOTH people didn't see a problem.
* There are two types of Republicans: millionaires and suckers.
"Mugsy's Rap Sheet": Recording history for those who seek to rewrite it.
When something gets put into the paper, any paper, it needs approval. It needs a second and third set of eyes. The cartoonist is a moron and the editor is double the moron.
I'm glad I stopped reading the (P)iece(O)f(S)hi(T) years ago.
NOBODY 2012
The cartoonist's website is down! Can't think why.... After googling him he has been a prolific little hater, takes pot shots at all concerned. WIth his track record any good paper would have let him go.
SHOCKER! :-D
NOBODY 2012
Can anyone recall the Post showing a bleeding dead monkey shot by cops when commenting on a Republican president or congress?
To be fair, I don't believe the cops had to shoot a chimp while bush was in office. If they did, we didn't hear as much about it as we have this most recent event.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
that Bush was routinely portrayed as chimp-like in political cartoons, which is very true.
The line that is crossed is that the police shot the chimp, and then drew an allusion to the stimulus bill, as if there is a sensible metaphor between a monkey attack that very nearly killed a woman and the stimulus bill.
It's loaded imagery and you have to be an idiot not to see that a line was crossed.
What in the hell were they thinking?
They weren't.
NOBODY 2012
This goes well beyond being tone deaf.
statusquObama, change you can only pretend in

They may wish they'd never published that.
It seems to me this is bad in several ways...
Obvious monkey=African American imagery, but also this is after the
shooting of Sean Bell. Bad stuff this.
For the near future...I'm expecting there may be a few angry protesters.
might violate sedition laws...or something...I must admit...I don't know much about that.
also brought up Sean Bell. This is very bad stuff indeed.
NOBODY 2012
My god, this takes the knee-jerking to new levels.
It doesn't say "we need to find someone else to sign the stimulus bill," it says "write". Obama did not write it, it was the House Democrats who wrote it (thus implying that the bill was written by a bunch of chimps who don't know what they're doing, which is almost accurate in some regards).
To say that somehow then that it then links Obama is just disgusting.
But to hell with it. Why take the time to think about things when we can jerk our knees to SNL skits, "anti-union" ads (which didn't seem very anti-union to me, as someone who actually works a shitty low-wage job and is very pro-union), and to now this.
So pathetic. And now lets watch the flood of sheep nod in agreement.
at least they didn't put Biden in it with a big yellow hat.
good one
you are in favor of murdering Congress, rather than just the President then
I realize this is just a cartoon and the reaction should be strong, but not overblown, but I think has crossed a line here. But then, you're as ignorant as a dead chimp, so I'm sure you won't understand.
You're putting words in my mouth and in the mouth of the illustrator.
The picture doesn't say "go kill chimps," it doesn't say "Barack Obama is a dirty negro that needs to be killed," it doesnt say "murder all those liberals in Congress." It's calling Congress a bunch of stupid apes.
Wether or not the illustrator should have been using what was a seriously unfortunate event to get a laugh is a separate, and extremely valid, point.
The racism connection, however, is over-reaching and knee-jerky.
... are incredibly tone-deaf. Nobody's "knee-jerking."
It is an inexcusable "cartoon" for all of the various reasons cited.
Period.
"It's calling Congress a bunch of stupid apes."
And that's better how?
NOBODY 2012
So you can't call anyone an ape or monkey? Even if they're not a person of color?
Calling congress a bunch of apes (a body which is overwhelmingly white and old, nonetheless) is MILES better than possibly calling Obama an ape, just for the charges of racism that are being leveled against it.
And yes, I do agree with it. Congress IS run by a bunch of chimps. How else are you supposed to describe John Boehner?
It's because Congress, wrote a ridiculous stupid non-stimulating- porkulus bill, and rammed it down the throats of the American citizenry without even pretending to care what they thought about it.
Alright?
Congress is the point of the cartoon, but this is what happens when even the slightest hint of dissent against the hallowed Obama administration is detected...all guns and long knives drawn prepare to destroy the infidels!
in huffpo...
Whether or not what you say is correct.
It's just absolutely mind-numbingly STUPID of them to post such a thing. The tone-deafness as Alice put it, is unbelievable...
You do understand, that it IMPLIES that Obama wrote the stimulus.
And that's just extremely idiotic on the part of the NY Post.
whenever a conservative does something really really stupid.
It is always the same MO... with faux indignation about the fact that a conservative hasn't received their sacrosanct right to get the benefit of the doubt, no matter what.
Remember McCain had cut and paste comments for his minions to post in liberal blogs. Guess that writer still has a job in the "new GOP"!
It's cut and paste damage control.
the apologists are out in force...
Im goin to huffpo right quick...brb..
No it doesn't. You're projecting. A racist person who thinks Obama is a monkey would react that way.
However, that clearly is not the artist's intent. It can be taken a number of ways, but to attack the illustrator for how certain people might take it is not fair to artists.
If it was written "Looks like they'll have to find someone else to COME UP with the next stimulus bill," then there's more of a point.
And would you mind copying that post? Because I've been a member of this site for years, have read it every damn day, have posted repeated in praise of Cernig's posts and denouncing what I see as reactionary posts for quite a while.
To then call me some kind of right-wing plant is rather insulting, especially with no proof. It's the same kind of crap the right has been pulling for years; if you don't agree with them, you're a crazy commie who loves killing babies.
The same name calling, the same knee jerking.

how do you know what Delonas's intent "clearly" was?
Fair enough, no one can be really sure what anyone's intent is with any kind of art.
However, there are things that suggest intent with any kind of art. If he really was trying to go for a racist attack, he wouldn't have said "write" for instance. Write clearly indicates a comparison to the authors of the stimulus bill, the House democrats, to a chimp.

Congratulations, you can use a dictionary.
Have anything meaningful to contribute?
No?
Plain and simple.
But a pretty pathetic tool at that.
Before enlightenment - chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment - chop wood, carry water.
So no rebuttal, nothing to counterpoint. Why do you open your mouth then?
and I think that's the way it was meant to be interpreted.
HOWEVER, I think they should have been a little more careful with this, considering the many ways it could be interpreted - all of the analogies, etc.
Oh definitely, there's no doubt they were playing with fire with it.
If it was me personally, as an artist, I wouldn't have gone this route just for the reason we're seeing here right now. There are safer and all-around better ways to get the point across.
This cartoon is wrong, period.
The imagery is so loaded, and provocative, that it's meaning is clear, especially given the history of the "artists" other cartoons.
So nice try...but no cigar.
this racist needs to be removed or
given some of his own depicted medicine.
meaning--same cartoon with him in the chimps place.
wonder what outcry he would make with that image.
he has every right to express himself whether or not you agree with him.
what's with all of you folks calling for censorship?
When I first saw the cartoon here, I took it to mean the stimulus package was so bizarre that it could have been written by a monkey. But hey my mind usually tries to keep things simple. I have no idea what the cartoonist had in mind.
I know one thing for sure, I do not want to hear one more playing of the 9-11 call the owner of the chimp made. I can't take it.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
That's how I took it too PoP. Not that funny, but not racist.
Right! In fact I saw nothing funny about it at all. Just sort of a strange connection between the dead chimp and the stimulus package that I don't get.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
The only point the cartoon has to make is that the cartoonist connects black people with with primates and wishes the President was dead. Other than that i see no other possible connections.
But I can see how someone could reach that conclusion.
When I as young and stupid; back in my skinhead days. The shoot the monkey theme was quite the common political cartoon in the white power newspapers and pamplets. Before someone bites my head off, I was raised in that culture and have nothing to do with it, now that I am an adult. I am just being honest.
Why would anybody be upset with you for being a former racist? Racism is curable with facts and experience. :)
...because you are being honest. It's the apologists here who automatically defend this bigotry, totally(and historically in some cases)ignoring the pain from those who see a variety of factually traumatizing real life situations in this disgusting cartoon.
someone see's a cartoon about congress, but you see bigotry because you stretch it to be about racism and an attack on Obama, when it's not Obama.
That seems like creating bigotry to me.
No one is gonna fault you for coming back to reality!
Especially considering the previous work of Delonas--lots of anti-gay, anti-transsexual, anti-black stuff. Google his name and that of George Takei and Al Sharpton and you'll see what I mean. He's a violent-minded person and his xenophobia is pretty obvious to anyone who is being honest.
wrong.
that's just what you see.
As BTDT pointed out below, there was that attack on the Lady by a Chimp. Crazy Chimp, Crazy Stim Bill, kill the Monkey. Whatever.
If I have to think that hard about the humor, it ain’t funny anyway.
however, the cartoonist should have been wiser about the imagery he was using.
I also fail to remember a time during the past 8 years, in which a major newspaper ran a cartoon depicting the assassination of anything related to the legislative or executive branches of the government.
...men have been murdered by New York City policemen in situations just like that? You racism apologists are just as disgusting as the racists.
I don't think so L&L...
LNM...I respect the opinions of you and POP, but that is racism...period!
Sometimes a dead monkey is just a dead monkey. Just like sometimes LipStick on a Pig is still a Pig.
Progressive my ass.
And I respect yours as well.
I agree...it's racist as fuck.
The NY Post just stirred up a shit storm.
I explained down thread why the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the cartoon was the chimp attack. I have heard the 9-11 tapes of it over and over today and heard the story over and over. That's what was fresh in my mind. I think the general picture of the cartoon is upsetting in a whole lot of ways and not funny in any way.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

That was a chimp, not a monkey.
Anyhoo...
I think it was a small play on that 100 monkeys armed with typewriters could come up with a complete sentence or something like that... coupled with the recent chimp attack...
It was a horribly executed joke. (pun intended for the humor impaired.)
"When are we going to stop trying to tell elected officials what to do. Our job is to spend the taxpayers' money the best way we can." -- Tommy Watkins, Justice of the Peace, Crawford County, Arkansas
...the other 99 monkeys not shot to death in the cartoon.
I never said it was a good theory. Heck, I don't even believe that theory. I was just trying to give the artist the benefit of the doubt.
(It's not working isn't it?)

The wingnuts are claiming it's CONGRESS the cartoon is referring to. Suuuuure it is.
Let's not forget there's a lady lying in a hospital half dead from this attack. Oh HAHA HA HA! That's so FUNNY. A chimp that ate a lady's face and hands and ... it's like, you know... political!! HAHAHA!
So funny!
Is it possible that the "joke" was refering to the 1200 monkeys banging away on 1200 typewriters and one will "write" shakespeare's sonnets?
Or is it really that racism has became acceptable in today's America? And a source of "income" for racist bastards?
you reeeeaaally want this to be about Obama don't you?
unfortunately it isn't. Obama didnt' write the bill, did he?
can you be intellectually honest about that?
Racist thoughts. Because if they thought it was okay to think this up and draw this and print this, then that makes them racists.
My first comment would be to use a donkey. That would have made more sense and been political, but the media is into conflict. Not just conflict, but conflict at any price. The use of the monkey creates press for them (no such thing as bad press) and we as a public should shun them. They are all playing American's against each other for profit. The time has come to avoid the post and all conflict media. This means MSNBC as much as CNN or FOX. I plan on sticking with raw news feeds and drawing my own conclusions.
If the caption read "The president will have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill" there would be none of this controversy.
But either way, the cartoon is a piece of partisan hackery.
What's so insane about the stimullus package?
Compared to Henry Paulson & Bush's TARP, which was practically written on the back of an envelope, I think it's eminently sane.
Why no dead bleeding monkeys for Bush and Paulson?.
I don't think the package was insane, but maybe the cartoonist did. Hell, like I said, I don't know the intent of the person who drew the cartoon.
Even if he didn't intend anything racial by it, he probably should have thought twice about how it could be taken.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Come to think of it, I didn't see the (P)iece(O)f(S)hi(T) put up much of a fight when Bush bailed out the banks. But help the PEOPLE? To arms! To arms!

Comparing African-Americans to a monkeys, chimps or gorillas has long been was something seen in our more ugly years as a nation and is completely unacceptable . Why anyone would print this cartoon and think the implications weren't there or aren't there is plain stupid. Even if the intention was to call Democrats chimps it's not funny.
Take it down, apologize and move on.
But then again it's Murdoch. Who wants a terrorist fist jab?

What in the name of Bleeding Jesus and all his Martyred Saints was this rube thinking?! Sure, we all know that Rupert Murdoch's a denatured pig and most of the people who work for him are barely sentient, but Mohammed on a barstool ...
I'd expect to see this in a right-wing hate rag ... oh, wait a minute ...
...it's the Nation's President. And who proclaimed an Obama victory signals the death of racism? This sick, racist cartoon has multiple(all racist) meanings.
Is just around the next turn of the Century.
Stone Cold Racists.
Someone should ask Michae;l Steele what he thinks about this.

There is no story here.. I dont think they meant 'Obama' literally wrote the stimulus plan..
I remember in the primary days, Nicole cross-posted a cartoon of Hillary and Obama which I (amongst others) found very offensive (because he was drawn apelike) and Nicole defended it and accused us of misogyny. That was an offensive cartoon, this is not. I dont think this 'ape' was meant to be Obama. Get a perspective!
Who sent you to apologize?
I didn't defend the cartoon. I said they used the same exaggerated features on Hillary too (it is the cartoonist's style IIRC) and wondered why you found it offensive on Obama but not on Hillary.
My exact words were something to the effect that it was an equal opportunity offender.
I'll copy my post above:
The line that is crossed is that the police shot the chimp, and then drew an allusion to the stimulus bill, as if there is a sensible metaphor between a monkey attack that very nearly killed a woman and the stimulus bill.
It's loaded imagery and you have to be an idiot not to see that a line was crossed.
Fair enough, we disagree on both these counts.. but do I have to be an idiot??? Why dont the name calling rules apply to the esteemed staff as well as they apply to plebeians like me. If I had called a name the moderators would have deleted my post (I half suspect this post to not show up because the moderators will deem it off topic and somehow the thread will end up with me being called an idiot).
I copied that from my above post that wasn't addressed to you. It's a generic form of idiocy to not see that a line was crossed. If you want to personalize that to you being an idiot, that's not my intent.
And the moderators aren't going to touch your post.
Project much?
Thanks for your reply Nicole. I am not being paranoid, this happened to me in the past where I posted a critique on cernig's post with links to information contrary to what was presented and the mods deleted it. I had stopped commenting on C&L after that day until today because I really felt too much was made of this 'story'....
I do appreciate your posts and visit C&L several times a day
If the cartoonist didn't want to tie any of this to Obama, he wouldn't have made the stimulus the focus of his caption. He would written something completely different, tied directly to the tragic story of the murdered chimp.
The racist, anti-Dem, anti-Obama message is crystal clear.
...or we wouldn't be talking about it. Where each person comes down on the story is up to the individual. But trying to hastily brush it under the rug while chastising the rest of us for looking askance at the author's motives seems suspect to me.
There's my perspective.
I'm just superstitious enough to hedge my bets.
Obviously racism is a sensitive topic. I sympathize with those who are concerned about it in this context.
However, I suspect we see whatever we want to see in such a cartoon. I seriously doubt that the artist intended this to be a depiction of Mr. Obama, any more than Mr. Obama's campaign remarks about "putting lipstick on a pig" were intended to refer to Sarah Palin.
It's hardly an excuse to start screaming like a mindless Republican.
Who sent you to apologize?
I'm sorry folks, but the inclusion of a chimpanzee in a political cartoon does not make for racism. It's obviously tied to the old "monkeys at a typewriter" joke and the current human interest tale of the deranged chimp.
Don't we caricature ourselves, as liberals, by knee-jerking in this fashion?
I long ago learned to discount anything Al Sharpton has to say. He needs to 'reset' and start taking on issues that really matter.
Who sent you to apologize?
...what is or is not racism! People in my family are taught to completely ignore cultural failures like you. You clearly are never in association with real black people, and obviously slept through your history courses to just blow this shit off! You'll say the same shit next time too.
But we already debunked the 100 monkeys (1200 monkeys) at the typewriter bit...
Where are the rest of the monkeys?
Sometimes an orange is just an orange, but this time there's something rotting at the core.

really though, other than some sort of racist threat i am unsure what Sean Delonas is trying to get across here. the '100 monkeys behind a typewriter/shakespeare' thing maybe... i would say it is the definition of a bad political cartoon, but, then again, it is getting people talking and creating controversy
Ah.... The Fox question mark. Very apt.
I don't draw the inference myself, but I'm sure it's in the eye of the beholder. Could be, but there's no label.
Could be a take on the infinite monkey theorem, or just the fact that the solution is so FUBARd itself a chimp must've put it together. Me, I'm thinking, "No, this is so bad, I don't think a primate even had a hand in the deal."
But there is a big difference between portraying a white guy as a chimp (even though the guy who has merited the comparison has been a shame to primates every where), and portraying a black person as a chimp, which has been a historical denigration used by racists. And those who claim not to know that difference are liars, and most likely, Thugs.
me-oww!
to a monkey attack that almost killed a woman in Connecticut, not the infinite monkey theorem
how convenient.
to make it alright?
Wow...they have really screwed the pooch this time.
It was a chimp that attacked the woman... not a monkey.
It's like saying Jessica Biel and Margaret Thatcher are the same person.
"When are we going to stop trying to tell elected officials what to do. Our job is to spend the taxpayers' money the best way we can." -- Tommy Watkins, Justice of the Peace, Crawford County, Arkansas
Wait, the monkey attacked Jessica Biel, then is the chimp... Margaret Thatcher?
I just don't get monkey humor.
I didn't like Duncan Checks Out either.
I think that makes much less sense than the infinite monkey theorem.
That guy isn't a very good political cartoonist. It's one thing to set off a firestorm intentionally, but to be so unclear as to set off a firestorm when people don't agree on the meaning of the cartoon is just plain old lame.
I guess when you consider the source, and who owns and operates
The SunNews of the ScrewsFOX 'News'The New York Post, I'm sure it's very hard for them to hire anyone that was actually good.me-oww!
OMG, this is the worst I have seen. It is out and out racist and worse. It also has assassination overtones. Someone needs to pay a price for publishing that cartoon.
about 59,934,814 give or take a couple million Diebold/ESS hacked voting machine votes...
Otherwise known as the chimps that voted for McSame...
We don't inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children - Native American proverb
If being cold means there's no such thing as global warming, does being full mean there's no such thing as world hunger?
and I did not laugh. I guess the Post and the other racists are still butthurt over getting their asses handed to them in November.
I will tell them the same thing they told us in 2000 and 2004, GET OVER IT!
NOBODY 2012
You know, I'd like to think the artist was just thinking "hey, a bunch of apes could have written a better bill than Congress did" and made a rather unfunny joke. But good lord, whoever looked at this and didn't think "this is BEGGING for a misinterpretation" and decided to publish it is the real idiot here.
I mean, it's easy for the majority to look at this and not make the connection. But ask an African-American, who has seen his race caricatured as apes in every form of media you can name, and you're going to get a different response. How would you feel if you turned on the TV and saw an old Popeye cartoon depicting your race as a monkey in the middle of a crowd of human beings? THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED.
So we have a confluence of idiocy here: the idiot that drew it and didn't realize what he was doing, the idiot that published it, and every idiot who posts here and calls the response "knee jerking" when they haven't been caricatured, historically, as a monkey.
Don't forget the getting shot by cops thing. That's got a racial angle too.
Then that way they could plead innocence to charges of racism. And accuse people of racism who point out that black people are often portrayed as apes.
you give them much too much credit.
I'm with you, Judy. I've seen this move before.
"What? The confederate flag is about heritage, and that rope just looks like a noose... You people are all PC nazi's."
They hate us good white Christians. They no better'n chimps, I tell you! Blood-thirsty chimps who would attack and defile our wimmin! Ain't nuthin gonna stop 'em but a bullet. Then we'll see if they don't stop their commie pinko socialist ways. It ain't no good, these commies comin' in here and rilin' up the negras. Gotta teach these negras how to behave. Teach 'em to behave like our negras, who know hows ta talk, and hows ta behave around us and our wimmin!
Yessiree, they need ta be taught a LESSON!
A crazed animal that just happened to be a monkey got shot. So they worked it into the op/ed cartoon. Would it have been ok if the animal wasn't a monkey?
Personally I think this is the kinda thing that the left gets worked up about that makes us appear silly, even if it was intended to be racist.
Still I'm willing to feign outrage just to stick it to the post.
It's insight.
are feigning wit
...beyond the political and racial ramifications....why is it funny to equate anything with such an attack...while the victim remains literally faceless and handsless, fighting for her life....due to the attack...nothing funny there...

The part that kills me is these assholes will run this cartoon and then turn around and say "but it's not racist"
If your going to be a bigot, at least have the balls to be a proud bigot! don't coward in your home and say racist remarks that no one will ever hear...no, better yet, you should probably just play with your guns until you lose and eye or something!
...in the first place. Not knowing about that tragedy made the initial impact of the cartoon a real gasper. First thing I thought was that they were calling Obama a monkey and not only that, but that he should be shot.
Now in a refreshed context, it could be argued by the artist, and conservative-type apologists, that the drawing isn't racist, just not very funny. At all.
I dunno! In fairness, I have been calling Bush "The Pooflinging Chimp" for years, but at the same time I never advocated for his being shot and if I had ever seen a cartoon implying the same, i would gasped in shock just as readily as I did at this one.
I'm just superstitious enough to hedge my bets.
And I have heard so much about the chip attack over and over and over today, that it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the cartoon. After that, I didn't get the part about the stimulus package and just had to surmise what the artist intended.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
