The Brits have opened an enquiry "to examine the causes, conduct and consequences of the Iraq war."

Recall that the Nuremberg Trials charged the Nazi high command with "conspiracy to wage aggressive war" - and used the Nazi's own documentation of that conspiracy to hang them.

Enter the Jan 31, 2003 memo, that reveals Bush & Blair conspiring to justify their decision to invade Iraq in March 2003.

Confidential memo reveals US plan to provoke an invasion of Iraq

A confidential record of a meeting between President Bush and Tony Blair before the invasion of Iraq, outlining their intention to go to war without a second United Nations resolution, will be an explosive issue for the official inquiry into the UK's role in toppling Saddam Hussein.

The memo, written on 31 January 2003, almost two months before the invasion and seen by the Observer, confirms that as the two men became increasingly aware UN inspectors would fail to find weapons of mass destruction (WMD) they had to contemplate alternative scenarios that might trigger a second resolution legitimising military action.

Bush told Blair the US had drawn up a provocative plan "to fly U2 reconnaissance aircraft painted in UN colours over Iraq with fighter cover". Bush said that if Saddam fired at the planes this would put the Iraqi leader in breach of UN resolutions.

The president expressed hopes that an Iraqi defector would be "brought out" to give a public presentation on Saddam's WMD or that someone might assassinate the Iraqi leader. However, Bush confirmed even without a second resolution, the US was prepared for military action. The memo said Blair told Bush he was "solidly with the president".

The memo quotes Bush: "The start date for the military campaign was now pencilled in for 10 March. This was when the bombing would begin."

And the article ends:

This year, the Dutch government launched its own inquiry into its support for the war. .. The inquiry intends to publish its report in November - suggesting that confidential information about the role played by the UK and the US could become public before [Britain's] inquiry reports next year.

So both the British and the Dutch have active inquiries into "the causes, conduct and consequences of the Iraq war," and intend to release their results in the not too distant future.

I spent this day listening to my Jewish great-grandmother, Catholic, Lutheren, Dutch Reformed, Blah-Blah-Blah people sit around and marvel at the obvious lack of technology here in the good ol' Midwest because no one is seeing any of the dastardly deeds that are being committed against Americans and Israelis every day!

Hmmm...under normal circumstances concerning this kind of family chatter, I zone out because the Rush Limbaugh folk make me want to explode. But today. Today was different.

Yet, according to this get together we must have lost the technological war to Iran as if this was all it's all about. Although I suppose I can see why one might say this considering the 24/7 news on the subject.

My elderly ex-Detroit working fam just can't get over this idea of losing out on twitter to Iran while cursing the people repsonsible for holding back their freedoms. It was like that was all she wrote. Our nephew was killed in Iraq this past month. They wonder why no twittering or youtube videos of the killers.

I want to say "We are the killers" but it works both ways. Iran doesn't have a thing to do with this subject and Iraq doesn't have a monopoly on murder. We do.

I hated to question them.

sniff. I really felt it was sad.

Espcially since flags were a waving and the Korean war vets in my family gave speeches with more than what I'd call a hint of alienation, pride, disdain, rage and shame. A few of them raged at the so-called Iranian problem but went into total apoplectic fits about Korean nukes and then petered out into a painful ambivelence in general. Ennui is the them of today.

No one said anything about the banking or health insurance industries while various family members prepared to go belly up. Not a word about our continuing wars on multiple fronts.

I left as soon as possible. Sadness and fear seemed to creep into my own Dad's cake. We made a run for it but I held his hand the whole way home while he talked shop, the Michigan economy and health care stories.
