Tina Fey as Sarah Palin Tops Viral Video List for 2008
By Nicole Belle Thursday Dec 11, 2008 6:45am
Nearly four years after the launch of YouTube, it's startling just how much viral videos have come to resemble a highlight reel (or a gag reel) of recent history.
In 2008, the election was constantly reflected on video-sharing sites — and sometimes even influenced by such clips. But the year in viral video was not all politics; there was still plenty of room for a litter of puppies, brawling late-night hosts and a lion with an excellent memory.
Here are the year's top 10 Web videos:
4. "Yes We Can"
5. "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog"
6. Paris Hilton Responds to McCain Ad
7. Sarah Silverman and Matt Damon
8. Puppy Cam
I know that with the exception of the Dr. Horrible vids, I've seen all of these. What were the most memorable videos that you saw this year? Which of our C&L vids did you send out to family and friends?

Palin's turkey slaughter vid top's them all - SNL could never write anything so funny
Reminds me of those creepy Chik-Fil-A commercials a few years back...
what a rube. we dodged a bullet with that one.
That's just too awesome.
For those who haven't seen it,

But try to imagine this... family of Cape Buffalo drinking by the water, get attacked by a pride of lions. Family runs. Baby is left fending for itself, but is chased down. Lions then have to contend with a few crocodiles, and fight over the baby. While they struggle, over the hill comes about 300 Cape Buffalo, (the family with friends and relatives) ready to kick Lion ass in large numbers.
End result: Baby saved. Totally awesome.
That's like a scene right out of a disney movie...
That was incredible. One part made me jump (I won't say so I won't be a spoiler). cool.
But Real Time's treatment of Faux News' call of Obama winning the election is on top of my list.
I had not seen that. Perfect and probably pretty close to true.
We're forgetting 2 girls, 1 cup!
and I paid him good money to tell me that.
It's been described to me in such...vivid detail...I feel like I actually watched the damn thing...sometimes I hate my friends, lol!
►when the soup lines start to form.
This is the funniest thing I saw anywhere this year. I found it through someone who visited C&L. It's members of the old Lawrence Welk show doing "One toke over the line" I don't think they knew what the song was all about, they just knew the name Jesus was in it so it must be okay.
snd splice in a few pictures of me ripped, sitting in the Salinas Railroad Station, stoned in fringed buckskins and heading home from a Monterey concert.
Funny clip. It's obvious they had no frigging idea. Welk even calls it a "Modern Spiritual"
Thanks for finding that (although I wasted a bit of tequila out my nose on it)
I sent a link to that video to my husband at his lab. He shared it with all the marine biologists there and they sent it out all over the country. I don't think it will ever cease to amuse me.
when you check your brains at the door. Remember what your moms said "never use a word if you don't know what it means"
I don't mean YOU POP, I meant the singers. :o
I do remember watching that one late night totally flabbergasted. just wow.
I hadn't seen this clip, but they OBVIOUSLY thought it was a religious song, what with its references to Jesus AND Mary, somehow being thought of while sitting in a railway station!
You are right. It's hilarious, given their ignorance about what a toke is.
Not exactly equivalent, but it reminds me of something that happened when I was a young kindergarten teacher in a ghetto school in Newark, NJ. One day I checked attendance and noted that two of the five year-olds were absent, but to my surprise, they can marching out of the cloakroom about 20 minutes later.
I asked them, a boy and a girl, what they'd been doing in there all that time.
Sure enough, the boy giggled and wiggled and advised me, "Me and Diane was getting us some p*ssy." Diane laughed and looked at me wide-eyed.
I nearly fainted! I knew they were too young to have done much, but he sure had that expression down pat! I didn't say anything else except, "Well, go to your seats now." One of the few times I've been speechless.
Even today, it still makes me laugh to remember it.
P.S. I loved Christian, the Lion, too. I missed it when John featured it earlier.
Celine Dion's tasteless performance is much worse than Gail Farell and Dick Dale: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=FONt47Z0KZg; this was rated by a rock magazine as the worst cover of all time.
Some more thoughts: I'm looking forward to seeing the upcoming episode of 30 Rock where the order comes down from top GE/NBC management to have some totally clueless politician as a guest on the TGS withTracy Jordan Show. Liz Lemon is, of course, appalled by the idea, but there's nothing she can do to stop it. Tracy invents several ideas on how to make the "guest honky" look totally ridiculous on the air, and Jenna and the totally clueless politician are attracted to each other. (The sex of the totally clueless politician doesn't matter.)
And here's an idea, free of charge, for a YouTube production for all you aspiring actor/comedians out there: Sarah Palin as a guest on the "Church Lady" skit. (I was unsuccessful at convincing Dana Carvey and Tina Fey to take this on.) Hell, if you bear a remote resemblance to Palin, and live within driving distance of Vancouver, I'll do the Dana Carvey part, and I know a couple of people capable of doing the filming and editing.
clearing a loogie from his throat?
You don't really think?
They are sorta musicians, IYKWIM.
I hear he plays one hot accordion.
It's Myron Floren. And you're correct, he played one hot accordion.
Because it was made too late in the year, "Proposition 8: The Musical" didn't make the list. The list should be revised, because that thing spread like wildfire!
I'd have to vote for the Chinese Acrobats doing Swan Lake - not the best quality video, but the content more than makes up for it!

You really should watch Dr. Horrible. Pay the couple of bucks on iTunes, or wait for it on Netflix...it's very well done.
Yeah...definately check it out...its Joss Whedon at his best. Nathan Fillion isnt the greatest singer in the world...but its Nathan Fillion!...NATHAN FRICKIN FILLION! plus neil patrick harris shows why he's a stick of awesome dipped liberally in a big ol bowl of awesome sauce.
Seriously though...I cant remember the last time Joss Whedon had a series that sucked...and this web-series keeps that crazy train rolling.
And have been makin everyone who can sit still long enough watch it!
or you could click on the link above and watch it on hulu.com for free. (if you have a high enough speed internet)
Whassa U-tube?
Doesn't that fit under the sink?
The Budweiser "Wassup!" guys 8 years later -- all going through hard times because of the Bush Years. But at the end there's hope as one of the guys watches an Obama "Change" spot on the television. This was both funny and moving.
And soon coming to a Pampers commercial near you.
"I'm F***ing Matt Damon" and the original Tina Fey/Amy Prohler doing Sarah Palin/Hillary Clinton are the top two.
Not sure if the best lines were Tina Fey's Palin saying "...and I can see Russia from my house?" or just the look on Matt Damon's face when he's singing "she's f***ing Matt Damon!"
Watching "Christian the Lion" turns me into a smiling sobbing mess. It's like my idea of a wonderful fairy tale but it's real and true.
Cub videos of Christian the Lion and his humans:

I've watched the latest SNL Digital Short about 30 times now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4s33g4zVKF8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGf2tmuz1aw
that's definitely tops.
a memorable vid on C&L. Michele Bachmann channelling Joe McCarthy.
I also loved the SNL dude as Joe Biden "I'd take a bullet for John McCain but he's mentally unbalanced."
Cookie haka on FDL was very amusing.
I can't remember is this is 2008, but Bill O'Reilly "We'll Do It Live!" and Colbert's take on it as well, stripping down to his dicky.
LOL!
Hard to say because in spite of the "god-awfulness" of the repugs policies, decisions, and actions, you have to admit that it has been a great ride for the late night comedians.
Jason Jones' visit to Wasilla to see the "real America," where he interviews the current mayor of Wasilla, is a classic. Can't seem to find it on YouTube, but C&L posted it (and I saw it live). Also can be found on the Daily Show web site.

Samatha Bee's "Choice" video, where she tries to get the repugs at the RNC to say the word "choice" or "choose."
http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=184097&title=Bristol-Palin's-Choice
Rob Riggles' "Bus Tour of the Other Real America."
http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml...
Almost anything from the Daily Show, however, is hilarious, especially from these 3.
I saw last night that Rob Riggle is leaving the Daily Show at the end of this week....quite a loss for the Daily Show and us...but I'm sure we'll see him elsewhere.
Those DS vids are great and I fell down when Samantha Bee shared her thoughts right after Hillary lost the primaries and Sarah Palin was chosen as GOP VP, speaking as a "proud Vag*na American". Fall down funny.
He damned well BETTER end up with his own show or somethin by golly!
Ya hear me Riggles? POW!
Dr. Horrible is truly amazing. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll sing along. When Whedon gets bored, great things happen.
but a couple of links are no longer valid.
7. Sarah Silverman and Matt Damon = video removed for terms of use violation
10. Late-night Hosts Brawl = video not found

I LOVED 99.44 percent of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. It's innovative, well-done on a budget, and points the way for writers, directors, and producers with little or no money to what can be done with resourcefulness and talent.
That said, the very end ruined it for me. I guess that points to its success at involving me in the characters.
I don't normally send out links of C&L videos to family & friends, although I do download a lot of videos and make monthly compilations for my wife and I to watch. What my wife's been telling me recently is that she wants to see more Colbert videos (and Daily Show). :)
